Nexus 7 (2012) dock charging performance - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, After few failing attempts to make my own OTG Y cable for car mounting & couldn't find it anywhere down here (Egypt), I thought about changing the concept.... I'm thinking about using the pogo pins to charge the tablet & here is where my questions come:
- Are the pogo pins reliable & capable of charging the tablet as an alternative of usb charging?
- Does it take more time to charge rather than the usb cable?
Thanks in advance

USB is better

USB is faster. I build in a dock drop for my car and while its cool, the charge connection pins are highly variable due to the fit and finish of the crafting I was able to achieve on the dock itself.
The warp and shrink with hot and cold is pretty much outside tolerance +90F and +40F. While I can get it to fit, at higher temps the connection is lose. This results in static and hiss as the connection wobbles back and forth. Im in Texas and not as hot as egypt is my guess.

force usb charging

I would like to charge my SGT 7.7 with the normal USB cable it came with on my pc; however, due to its lower mA output (USB standard is 500mA). The standard adapter it came with has 2000mA (2A) output, hence it detects and charges. However, I do notice that the unit charges at 1A with my iPhone charger, perhaps just a bit slower.
Anything we can modify in the rom to enable force usb charging? there is such a way in SGT 10.1 but I can't find a method similar to it on my 7.7
it charges when the device is in a powered off state... but very slowly

Yep, it does.
But I would like to keep my device on while charging...
it's very slow because device detect voltage in data line. check out adapter in ebay.

Yeah understood.
I'm using the Galaxy Nexus USB charger and it works well (1A)
but the iPhone 4S charger does not (also 1A)

Mine still charges even with the red X on the battery icon. Albeit, very slowly, and only really when the screen is off. Not bad for just listening to music while I'm at work!
USB charge adapter
To charge your GT7.7 using a usb cable you need to have an adapter.
You can make an adapter from the below parts. See attached images of the end result.
user rick75204 explains it best below.

USB Extension Cable
33k-Ohm Resistor (Shack Part No. 271-1129)
10k-Ohm Resistor (Shack Part No. 271-006)
Steps:
1. Cut USB Extension Cable in half, lets name the 2 halves, the half you will plug into the power suppy will be called "Cable A" and the half that you plug into the Galaxy Tab Data Cable will be called "Cable B"
2. On 'Cable A" strip outer plastic to expose all wires within, eliminate Green and White on this cable only as it will not be needed, leaving you with only the Red and the Black Cables
3. On "Cable B" strip outer plastic to expose all wires within, this should leave you exposing all 4 wires
4. On "Cable B" strip both the Green and White wires and join thes 2 wires with the 2 resistor ends (you should be using the resistor ends that have the red band with these wires), these can be joined by either soldering or just twisting together.
5. Strip Red wire from both cables and join together with the 33k-Ohm Resister (this will be the larger of the 2 resistors and should also be the end with the Gold Band) and as well join these together with solder or just twisting together.
6. Repeat the above process with the Black wires and 10K-Ohm Resistor.
7. No finally use Electrical Tape or Shrink Tubing to cover all your work.
USB Charging
Hi Guys
I recently bought a "Samsung Charging Adapter" from power gorilla for use with their portable power packs.
It is a usb adapter which when used in line with the Samsung USB cable, charges my 7.7 while I am using it from a 500ma USB port on my MAC ....
Philip
This works great for $7, has a switch to go from data to charging

Wrong forum Look in 10.1 development forum, in the thread for pershoot's kernel. Or buy one of the cables mentioned above.

I have similar charging problem with the stock data cable, but I could be able to charge with a USB 2.0 mini USB cable with a Galaxy Tab to mini USB convertor as shown below.
And I even use an USB extension and it is charging up just fine.
I just ordered this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-t...-Galaxy-Tab-P1000-7500-7510-730-/170969489675
for $2.99 I hope it works. The things we go through in order to be not price gouged..
I have an existing HDTV (HDMI) adapter and its charging well with the included usb data cable of 7.7. :good:

Although if you don't have it, it's not practical to buy one just for your usb cable to work for charging.

also would like to know how to force charge via USB I have gigabyte mainboards that have special charging ports that have 3x normal power .. but still can not get them to recharge my galaxy note 2 while its being used :S
strangely my old laptop with USB Ver 1 .. recharges the phone when in use ...
using Ubuntu and unsure if its pc sided software issue or android related issue
The device will certainly charge slowly via USB, although the battery animation may not show it.
You may use other adapters etc, but I'm fairly sure they don't actually work due to kernel limitations. Changes may need to be made within the kernel (same as SGS2) to actually increase actual charging current. SGS2 was set at USB 450mA. I'm sure I've seen the mod while searching github kernel source code.
Some of the measurement apps out their are quite inaccurate, and I have only used as I guide.
You could use init.d script to set on boot, but anything larger than 450mA could be just placebo,.... unless kernel enabled....
If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Shorting the USB Port?

I bought a Nexus One with the infamous broken power button issue, and I am curious what would the effect be if I short the VCC and GND line in the charging port? Has anyone tried that? I am thinking that it will either fry the board or trick the phone to think that it is charging.
The reason I want to do this is because I travel a lot and I might not have access to USB charging if I want to swap the SIM card. I am familiar with the other tricks regarding remapping the trackball_center and I am going to install a version of CWM that doesn't support charging (that way the phone boots when I plug a charging cable).
So long story short... what do you think about attempting to short the micro USB charging/data port?

Not much.
Unless the unit is in USB host mode there will be no voltage on the Vcc line.
Even in USB host mode it should be current limited and do no damage.
Still, I wouldn't do it.
I don't know why you think that shorting it will do something useful.

I actually do not know, thus I asked... just trying to think outside the box about a way to trick the phone to think it is charging short of carrying a portable battery charger with me (which can be problematic on carry-on luggage).
Another idea I am thinking about is building a small flex cable using a conductive ink pen that permanently connect to the phone's battery on one side and a cut down male micro-usb on the other side (to slim it down). Such cable would be small enough to fold under the battery cover and allow it to close.
My question is: Will the ~3.7v be enough to get the phone to start charging? and do you foresee any issues with feeding power from the battery right back into the phone's charge port?

I think 3.7 won't be enough. Coz usb giving ~5V. So phone won't charge at smaller voltage.

[Q] Concurrent Pogo plug charging/OTG USB usage under Android 4.3?

A Nexus 10 with Android 4.2.2 cannot be concurrently charged with a pogo plug while using a USB OTG connected accessory. Has this deficiency been fixed with the Android 4.3 update?
I wonder if this isn't so much a deficiency as a way to protect people from frying the tablet by charging through pogo and usb at the same time. So by default they disable usb while pogo's charging.

Well for the Nexus 7 (original model) there is a custom kernel that enables what I am asking about. Also from what I read it seemed like a deficiancy as the code is there to stop concurrent charging from both the pogo connector and USB but unfortunitely it is cutting off pogo charging even when a OTG USB device is drawing power and not charging what so ever. The notification charge indicator displays as if the device is charging but that is false. An OTG cable has more pins (5?) than a USB charging cable (3?) so it seems a solution should be possible.
I'm no expert and am only going by what I've read but it makes sense to me that when the microUSB port it not charging that the pogo connector should be able to. Personally I think the pogo connector has been abandoned and will not likely be included in the Nexus 10 refresh unless Android 5 (Keylime Pie) addresses this issue. Assuming, of course, it has not been addressed with Android 4.3.

Charging cable

Hi all,
Have a couple of the dash chargers but only one cable, I've got a tonne of other USB C cables, but anything but the dash cable will only charge slowly, not even normal charging?
Can buy more but seems like a waste.
Is there any risk to using the non dash cables.
Is there a way to force dash charge?
No guesses please, if someone actually knows about this stuff I'd like to hear from you.
Thanks.

My phone still charges normally on a third party USB C cable. There is no risk of damage with normal USB C cables, but I'd go with well reviewed cables and not just any third party solution.
No, you can't force dash charge. Only the provided cable dash charges.

Just odd that it always says charging slowly. Even when it's just the cable that's been changed.. Bit crap.
Kernels used to be able to allow quicker charging over USB, might be possible to get more out of the standard non dash cables.

Unfortunately, the USB C on this phone doesn't support USB PD (Power Delivery), so it won't charge faster on the normal cable. I find that strange, since the 2 year old Nexus 5X and 6P had USB PD.
I use a non oneplus usb c charger at bed time and it charges at normal speed since launch and I have had no problems. The only thing that makes it show up charging slowly is if I plug it into my computer. From what I recall the Dash Charge cables have extra pins in them at normal usb to C cables do not.

Apple Mac chargers x2 of them charge slowly, HP elite X2, few others, namely slightly aged Samsung ones, can't think of any that charge normally, different cables.
Even the original dash charger with a different cable charges slowly.

Nexus 7 wiring??

Hello all,
First thread here and hoping you guys and girls with more experience can help.
Basically I am fitting my nexus 7 2012 in my car but its got the common charging problem where my battery drains faster than I can charge it.
I have ordered a new USB port strip as I've read that can fix it and fingers crossed with that.
My problem/requirement:
1. I want to charge the tablet via the usb port using a hardwired 5V 2A device this will be plugged into a otg y splitter which is then plugged into the tablet.
2. The USB A side of the splitter I want to connect to my cars ECU (it has a USB port) so I can read the data on that (basically a very expensive memory stick)
I wanted to confirm that this would work and id be able to read data at the same time as charging it.
I also wanted to double check I'm not somehow going to send my 5v 2a power down into my ECU and set it on fire
On a side note, if my new USB port replacement doesn't solve the issue of charging the tablet i will have to remove the battery and hardwire it in, will i still be ok with using the USB port for the ecu while charging hardwired with no battery?
Kind Regards
Tim
Getting any USB 2.0 device to take current while hosting is tricky.
Usually it involves talking directly to the PMIC (power management IC).
If it's a fixed installation, why not remove the battery?
It will avoid the grief of the battery swelling up, which is not too unusual for things plugged in all the time.
I've been using a Nexus 7 (2013) for a few years, but just charging on USB.
It started falling out of its nice holder.
That's when I realized that the battery was all puffed up making the back convex.
I cut off the battery cell itself on the metal tabs and soldered in wires to a 4 V 2 A supply.
I found out that the BMS is a bit balky, it refused to turn on.
So I connected it to USB to "charge" it for about 10 seconds.
Then I could turn it on (without the USB).
Ok, I could have bypassed the BMS entirely but that can be a whole 'nother can of worms too.
