How to get more icons on that huge homescreen - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the NOTE 4 has a massive screen but even on the advanced touchwiz interface, there is no option to have 5 or 6 rows of icons on the homescreens. I find this odd and unusual. IS there a way to do this? Am I being thick? Do I really have to go with another launcher? I need the S_pen functionality in tact.

Thanks but this requires root. I dont want or feel the need to root yet.

not possible without blowing the efuse. try knox launcher if you want. its a bit different but may not be what youre looking for.

Use another launcher. I use Apex and I still have S-pen functionalities.

I use Nova Prime and my s-pen functions normally and I don't believe there's any less functionality vs touchwiz

1 less functionality that I know of when using another launcher - you can't pin action memos to the home screen.
It only works on TW.

Without rooting, you will still need to choose a different launcher.
Its only in the 2nd stickied post in this subforum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/help/qa-unrooted-miss-root-aroun-t2931785
Not trying to be snarky, but too many people are just blindly asking before doing some research - the search feature should be your first step.

[Request] 7 screens?

So, I was thinking, since I got this phone I have been downloading apps willie nillie. Keeping it clean though, clearing out what Ii haven't been using. I was wondering if there is plans to add more screens.
I am not a coder, so I would not be sure how to do this. The extra 2 dots and screen preview I am sure would add extra difficulty for this. I would be willing to donate for this. I am a widget head and I Have a few apps I keep going to the menu for.
Thank you if you read this. Have a good day.
shoot, i can't even fill 5.
Have not heard of more than 5, but U can create folders on the home screen & fill them up with apps...
You see that figure on the bottom of the screen, with the little grid?
That's the equivalent of your 7 homescreens.
Download home++
Ok, so you guys seem to be confused, I wasn't actually asking your opinion or how you use your homescreen. I wan't asking if there was some crappy overlay app on the market for my launcher, I know how to use the phone, I know where the apps are.
This is actually a request for the devs. If one of them thinks this is feasible and decides to do it, it's on them.
So, unless you can code, i don't care. If you can code and even bother reading or considering this, I say thank you very much as I know that the devs time is valuable.

Thanks for the tip dude. But I have tried that one, And I agree that home++ is really nice, Ii would like to see 7 screens natively in a custom rom or possibly an Add on.
I am curious how hard this would be to code to be honest... it seems that it was only a minor update/change seeing as 2.0 only had 3 screens...
i would also like to see 7 screens...most of my screen space is used up...
But surely downloading a small program like Home++ is better as you can choose the amount of screens.
I can switch from anywhere between 3 and 7 screens without worrying about blank screens.
Also Home++ is FAR smotther and faster than the stock home launcher which I find surprising.

Wow, there's no need to be a jerk. This is an open forum, where people post opinions, thus you can't dictate who or what gets posted in the thread you started provided its within the rules set forth by the mods.
Why not ask, ney, demand for 9 home screens. 9 is way better than 7 and while you're at it, why not have them wrap around cylindrical style. Oh sorry, here I am throwing idea's out in your dev only thread.

Some of the comments suggest that it isnt faster than stock, how many screens are you using? Would Launcher+ by the same dev be better if all I want is a different number of screens?

I'm using 6 screens, here's how they're set out
1. Weather/Clock with memory widgets and 4 icons
2. power widget, Music widget, 6
3. Photo Gallery widget (full screen)
4. Twitter, Facebook widgets and another Music widget
5. Pure Calender widget (Full screen)
6. clear screen.
Works flawlessly and far better than the stock launcher.

One handed use limitations like notification bar

I am strongly considering the Note II. I know one handed use isn't really ideal, but you do need to do that occasionally. One issue I can see is bringing down the notification window. Are there any shortcuts to doing this? Any other times that one-handed use seems like a PIA?
Thanks!
Well you can replace Touchwiz launcher with something like Apex which has gestures, for example swipe down and notification bar will come down or double tap etc.
Not sure of a similar gesture based app exists that works with Touchwiz.

I do this onehansed with no real issue. I would say I have average size hands. Might be difficult with small hands. I have to stretch to reach all the way across the screen onehanded, but it isnt impossible. I will say note2 is more comfortable for this than note1

Agreed, a replacement launcher is sensible anyway, given how horrid Touchwiz is (personal opinion, I know), so something like Apex or Nova (my choice) gets around this. With Nova a simple downwards-swipe anywhere brings down the notification menu.

Any way (MOD?) to increase number of homescreens?

I love the that homescreens are added, removed and moved in touchwiz but wish that we could add a few more of them. Anyone know of a mod or something to change the limit?
Have you tried any of the launchers, like Go Launcher or Nova? Not only can you add more screens, you can increase your grid to like 5x5 (and other choices) so that you might not need as many screens.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have tried both of those, and a couple of others, on my tablet, but they are not really appealing to my tastes. I know lots of people love them though.
I know there are mods to increase the # homescreens from 7 to 9 in the S3, as well as changed the # icons per screen :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155862
And someone has increased already changed the #icons in the S4 on one carrier (not sure if carrier makes a difference):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272582
So, I am hopeful we can see this on a Sprint S4 soon

Looks like that mod has issues in that it does not play well with TW widgets.
Sounds like you've not tried any of the launchers on your S4 yet. Might want to give one of them a shot. I have used both on my S4. Currently using Nova, but may go back to Go. Go has some nice features, like the home screens rotate. But both work well.
What is it about the launchers you don't like? I've read this in other places and don't understand it, so am curious. I have not been able to see a downside to them so far.

You are right, that mod on the S3 didn't play well with some of the TW widgets. Which is not a big deal for me, but more icons and homescreens is.
What don't I like about Go etc? Well, its sort of like asking me why I like fat, heavy pens while you like skinny, light pens, for example. It just doesn't 'feel' as good to me. I tried using GO for quite a while on my CM10 tablet, and there were definitely some things that I liked. But honestly, its been months since I used it and I can't remember the specifics. I do remember thinking that there were a lot of features but it just didn't feel as good to me as Trebuchet on CM10. Sorry I can't offer a more helpful reply.

[Q] Note 3 with alternative launchers

Hi, can someone explain what functionality is lost when using an alternative launcher such as Nova with the Note 3?
I am not a big fan of the touchwiz but this phone serves my every other purpose. what am i losing with nova?
Also, Are there other ways to closer resemble AOSP that i can do? (without rooting)

There are a couple of things that are lost when you swap to a custom launcher, one of the main ones is that you cannot use all of the "S Widgets" that Samsung provide. You cannot keep the genuine Samsung look either ( obv )
If you move to a custom launcher whether it is Nova, Apex, or any of the other alternatives, you can create a whole new look, AOSP, Windows Phone 8, or iOS. Each has their different benefits and pitfalls, but it is all about finding the launcher that you are happy with and does what you requite in a launcher.

Yes, the only thing I can think of that you will lose by moving to a custom launcher is a few of the samsung-specific widgets (namely the clock/weather widget) and the swipe-up gesture to launch their 'my magazine' thing. If you truly care, replacement widgets can be found in the play store that will be similar to the samsung widgets you lose, and most launchers allow you to define your own gestures and what they do, so you can create a swipe-up gesture of your own to launch the my magazine app.
To clarify, there is no issue with the included applications samsung bundles, those will all still work as normal and will show up in the new launcher's app drawer (s health, s voice, scrapbook, my magazine, etc)
So action memo will still work? Also, don't you lose page buddy if you switch launchers?

Any way to centralise the app drawer button?

Hi,
I've had the S7 Edge for about a week now and am absolutely loving it, however I have one small gripe. I am used to having the app drawer icon/ button centralised rather than off to the right. TouchWiz doesn't seem to let me move it, and I don't really want to go to a third party launcher if I can avoid it...
Any suggestions? Hacks etc.? I have root access so options involving root are OK for me.
Thanks in advance...

You are missing out a lot by not wanting to use any 3rd party launchers.
There are over 100 launchers in the google playstore and ALL of them have
the option to move any of the dock icons or other icons on home screen to be
located in the center of the home screen dock or any other place.
None of these launchers require root but it's always best to have root access.
I don't understand why so many people here in xda use the stock touchwiz
launcher when there are so many better ones available which have almost
every conceivable feature and user options in them.
Nova, Next Launcher, Go Launcher and Google Launcher are just a few examples.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

Thanks for the reply. I've been a long-time Android user and have used Apex, Nova, Go, Sense, Xperia, TouchWiz etc. etc., but it's all a personal preference. I actually quite like TouchWiz (let the flaming commence), but my only gripe is not being able to move the app drawer button.
And saying there are so many 'better' ones available is all a personal preference.

I switched over to TW for my default launcher to see if I could find an answer for you.
Well, dang, if that isn't annoying. I got nothing. You would think that would be an easy and intuitive customization. (Needing root for an Xposed module or a custom ROM??? It just should be easier than that!)
Ugh. I am not OCD, but I prefer my home at center, too.
I find that I only use TW to create shortcuts (so that they appear as options for the Edge sidebar)... then I return to Nova. Like you, I have tried more than a dozen launchers (Smart, Action, Lightning, Go.... many of them very good....) but for me, I keep coming back to Nova for customization and options.
Good Luck. I hope someone finds what should be a simple solution.
I discover Nova, since then, TouchWiz is something from the past, Nova is much better and versatile, try it, you will love it

Nothing to get flamed about. Touchwiz is actually quite nice, bloatware aside. Disabling all that I'd even be able to be happy with Touchwiz if not for the app drawer button. That alone was enough for me to go to Nova. I searched high and low for a way to move the app drawer where it belongs (center) but couldn't find a thing.
My only real grasp on TouchWiz over any other is the widgets I use. Can't use Samsung widgets on Nova right?

I never tested all of them, but pulling up widgets on my phone right now there's an option to add Samsung widgets (that I didn't disable with EZ Disabler) so I am assuming they should all work. What are some you're curious about? I'll check them. I know edge still works fine, you can keep the stock look or apply the stock Marshmallow look, there's a ton of options. It basically takes nothing away (so far not even performance or battery life) but enables you to have a bit more control over things. A lot more control really.
Gonna try now, thanks for that info.

I have been a long time Nova user, but also prefer the Touchwiz launcher on the S7. Unfortunately, the only way to move the app drawer button to the center it to have it the only button in the dock at the bottom.

Hmm, are you using the free version or paid?
I am using the paid version with the notifications (TeslaUnread) add on. I'm not sure what enabled the widgets as it wasn't my goal, but that's what I have installed on mine in case it matters. I just hold my finger down on the background and it pops up with the usual menu with wallpaper, widgets, etc.

Wife got an S7 today. Haven't touched it yet but I'll pay special attention when setting this part up to see if I can find what makes it available. Like I said, when I set mine up I just wasn't paying attention to the widgets because I don't use any aside from the weather. I just know they're all there now.
