So the wife managed to lock out her Nexus 7 totally so it no longer accepts screen pattern unlock - only allows gmail account but does not accept the password. Password is correct as can log into gmail elsewhere. Is there alternate method to unlock apart from hard reset as really would prefer not to??
Nexus is rooted and reflashed ROM Thanks
My Samsung S5 (SM-G900F, 4.4) device has a fingerprint scanner to unlock the screen. It was working perfectly, but now it only asks for the alternative password, but I forgot it. I tried on the Google webpage to lock my phone, I hoped that the password given there will be overwrite the alternative password on the phone, but it said, that it found the phone already locked, so no need to use the password. I don't want to do a factory reset if it possible, how could I get the fingerprint scanner to be an option again, or somehow unlock the screen and use my phone?
This happened to me today in the morning on my S5 mini with stock OS. At first I typed in the correct alternative password, but it was not recognized. Latter I successfully (?) changed password with "Lock" option on Android Device Manager, and it didn't help either...
At the end I did a factory reset and lost all my data
Is this a common bug? Should we report it somewhere or something?
After too many failed fingerprint attempts, it will only ask for the password
Maybe someone else has been trying to access your phone
Factory reset to regain access if you don't know your alternative password (Probably a good idea to write that down)

Yes, you are correct. I tested this again, and I think that, in the morning, I really used wrong password . And the first time I didn't notice the displayed info, about password already being set, on Android Device Manager site, when I tried to change the password.
Thanks for the replay
Note 4 running CM12. Chose to encrypt. It started the process and continued for about 30 min or so. Then a password screen comes up stating "Enter your password to decrypt the device". I did not ever tell it what password I wanted. I also don't have a screenlock password as I never used it. I do not know what password to use to unlock it now, I've tried all my usual passwords but nothing.
Is there some place it pulls the password from that I am unaware of?
My brother has a note 4 and lost the possibility to use his fingerprint to unlock his phone. He only has the prompt to put in his backup password and forgot it. When using googles device manager to get a temporary password, it says, that he already has a lock screen (the irony). He also doesn't have a samsung account associated to his note 4. We already tried to overwrite some key files via recovery mode, but they don't seem to contain the proper keyfile for that backup password.
Anyone know some solution to this?
do you even know the location where these backup password files( for pattern lock/ fingerprint lock) are stored??
and is there anyways to read them( assuming of course i am rooted and have trwp)
I'm on stock ROM Nougat 7.1.1 B02 on my A2017G. ZTE had promised full phone encryption with 7.1.1, however, the phone doesn't ask me for my password at boot time but only after asking for the SIM's PIN at first login. In the security settings it says that the phone is encrypted, however, I'd rather have the full encryption that uses my password for encryption as well. Has anyone gotten encryption with PW to work on a A2017G on stock ROM? Or am I missing something and encryption is already working properly?
1. you can activate a password or pattern that will be asked after every boot or reboot
Indeed. But that's after the boot process which leads me to believe that the password isn't used as part of the encryption key. Other Nougat devices I use ask for the password before the main boot process takes place.
