I can pledge $50 to help sweeten the deal.

Indeed. That's the only reason I am hesitating on purchasing this phone. I have tethering right now on my Samsung Exhibit, and it is a feature I cannot do without. Unfortunately, unless I want to unnecessarily pay more to T-Mobile to use the data I'm already paying for, I ( and you ) need root to get that.

ZTE did post the source code. http://opensource.ztedevice.com/
Still need the source to the boot loader, though, for a clean root solution. Without it, root will have to rely on a hack, if one can be found.

The bootloader being locked will not stop root. We want the bootloader unlocked to make it easier for Twrp/cwm and ROMs.

Yeah, I thought so! I have tried every trick in the book and can't get root. Just wondering if the device already has a false root, ' cuz when I ran root checker, it told me that my device has an improper root.

they are not obligated to provide source code for the bootloader, and we would never get.
They have to provide Linux Kernel source to be GPL compliant, but they also neglect to do this on a lot of their phones

As you all know, a bounty was set up in order to acquire the capability to emulate games with the official emulator made by Sony. The most up-to date recount is the following (extracted from this thread, with one later addition by danieljamie):
$20 USD - Tornlogic
$20 USD - johnsongrantr
$20 USD - gwaine
$50 CAD - sdlaurin (not paid)
$20 CAD - Xplay
$20 CAD - Clyzm
$20 CAD - Levistras
$10 CAD - illuminerdi
$10 CAD - bardiel13
€30 EUR - Nhialor
€20 EUR + Xperia X1 - maxiiiamsta
€20 EUR - DeareN
€10 EUR - Logseman
£10 GBP - replicant101
£05 GBP - DeadlyDazza
£05 GBP - blickmanic
$40 AUD - Duramajin
$10 AUD - watever
$10 AUD - FrAsErTaG (not paid)
£10 GBP - danieljamie
Given that Yifanlu has fulfilled the conditions for the bounty with his PSXperia tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1201532), it's fair that he collects the cash that we pledged.
So, this thread should serve as a reminder to those who pledged the cash, and as a public registry for those who paid it. I will keep it up to date. The quantities and names in italics are the ones that have already paid their share.
I commence here: I, Logseman, have donated my share (€10 EUR) already, with the Paypal confirmation number 2S820348CG141221G.
Thank you very much and thanks to everyone else who donated or will donate. I've sent a message to everyone already, so nobody needs to do so again. Also, if there's any requests or features (be reasonable) that you would like, feel free to say so.
EDIT: thanks gwaine, johnsongrantr, and bardiel13 you can mark their names off.

By all means I will pay next Friday when I get paid as this seems to work for other users but..
Apologies for troubleshooting on this thread but I don't know where to put this info..
I have followed every step to a T, I have the original Crash Bandicoot 3 game, ripped with many different softwares, I have the correct version of Crash Bandicoot 1 on my phone (00344), took the APK and ZPAK from the phone and onto my desktop.
Downloaded latest version of the tools, used the java GUI version, on windows 7 x64, I receive no errors in extracting the data and converting the ISO to the data..
So I put the data folder (the com.playstation.blahblah folder) in the Android/data folder on SD card, put the APK file on my SD root and install from a file browser on the phone.. it installs successfully.. i go to run the app, and it just goes black screen and then back to my Android menu.
I have a rooted, UK generic, 2.3.3 Xperia play, on Orange.. I still have crash 1 installed on the system..
I don't know what a "logcat" file is or whatever.. I'm really stuck..
yifanlu - you could do with some form of forum / chat room for troubleshooting, and maybe some FAQs and stuffs..
But like I said, I regularly use this forum, I will pay up next Friday.. I just wish I could get it to work,
And by the way, excellent tool, thankyou very much (when it works for me )

Unfortunately, more then half the people either are inactive or don't feel like responding. I'll give them a month before a second friendly manner. But I'll give the benefit of the doubt and thank those who did commit quickly.

So, let's boost this.
This is the bounty thread for whomever successfully roots the Moto X (all variants, NON-DEV) on 4.4 KitKat
The idea here is for users to pledge an amount, (i.e. User A says they'll pay $10), if a Developer comes along and announces he/she has a method for rooting the Moto X on KitKat for all variants of the device.
Whatever you do--do NOT pledge an amount if you can't keep it. It makes you look bad, and it makes us all look bad.
With that said, thank you for your pledge!
No matter how much you decide to pledge--it's greatly appreciated. Nobody will judge you if you put in a dollar or two. As long as you're contributing, it's all that matters! :highfive:
I'll check back occasionally and update the totals and quote you on your pledged amount.
Donors will only have to pay once a Dev claims the bounty.
I will go ahead and kick it off...

I've never heard of that, and honestly I don't see any problem with it? it's not like we MUST donate but as he don't have the device and it's not a cheap one I don't see the problem with donating one as it's a killer feature we want.

Why does the "who did it first" matters?
Both methods works in a way that's fundamentally different, and as far as I can see, my method is the only way to go to maximize flexibility and compatibility between various devices and ROMs.

It matters because, if people donate to buy you the device and you're not able to get it working for arm64, they're wasting their money. I'm not saying that would be the case, but, I'm always suspicious of people who post something thousands of people have been waiting for only hours after someone else posts the actual steps taken to fix said issue.
*EDIT. By wasting their money, I mean you didn't do the previous work, and can't fix for arm64 (yes, I know, I have trust issues)...

I don't say that what you say is wrong, I agree 100% but @rovo89 seems to be very busy atm I guess, and @arter97 won't probably go buy this phone anyway so the only solution I see now is if we donate a device to get it working ASAP, because I can't stand the ads in the youtube app for example and some other stuff I need thanks to Xposed.
So I just purchased the 6P and I have a few weeks to wait for it's arrival.
Was curious if there is a way to alter the build.prop so that I can use my 6P as a WiFi hotspot without keeping the phone rooted. Verizon doesn't allow me to use my phone as a "hotspot" with my Unlimited Data Plan, so I've always had to use an xposed module or something to deactivate the subscription check. My hope is that I can deactivate this check then unroot my phone.
I don't want to be fully rooted on a daily basis because I am hoping to use Android Pay.
Hotspot works out of the box without any build.prop edits.

There was another thread were Verizon users on unlimited data confirmed. I'll have mine Thursday so I'll check as well.
personally i've seen mixed reports. i'm beginning to wonder if there were a "later" batch of SIMs issued that forced some VZW bloatware to be installed. i'm not sure if these rumors were true or not, as this will be my first non-vzw device.
as for the OP - if you end up needing to edit the build.prop, you can unroot after making the changes.
I have had mine since Friday and I can confirm that you can use the built in hotspot function with my unlimited data package with no pop up at all. It just works. I don't know why but I am not complaining like said above.
Great news, thanks guys!!
Now if we could just get November 18-20 here faster...
I'll have to avoid XDA all together as the draw of custom ROMs could cause me to abandon Android Pay, but tethering and no root is great! Only other thing I use root for on my MotoX is Greenify which should be nullified by Doze.
PSA: First thing you do with your phone, unlock your bootloader! Regardless of rooting or not, you want the flexibility to not have to wipe your phone if you choose to root.
I spent the better part of yesterday reinstalling everything because I chose to finally root. Android Pay works with root, you just have to disable Superuser to add payment methods.
Tethering also works with Verizon out of the box. I have unlimited data and not paying for hotspot.
Got mine today. UDP on VZW. Tethering works right out of the box. It's GLORIOUS. Used to Android pay to pick up six pack at the liquor store tonight. This may be the first phone I DON'T root LOL. I've rooted EVERY phone I've had. Who knew it would take a Nexus NOT to root HAHAHAHA
Seriously Tethering is the first reason for rooting. There are many others....but Tethering was my main reason. With it working out of the box....I'm going to let the Devs. work their magic before I go near messing with it. I left my wallet at home, but saw the wireless pay at the register....cha ching!

There are many others....but Tethering was my main reason. not only that but some adblocks work without root as well. i've become used to nine as my exchange email client, so replacing the exchange.apk isn't even necessary any longer.
i might start looking in to theming again, however, since M natively supports it.

personally i've seen mixed reports. i'm beginning to wonder if there were a "later" batch of SIMs issued that forced some VZW bloatware to be installed. i'm not sure if these rumors were true or not, as this will be my first non-vzw device.
as for the OP - if you end up needing to edit the build.prop, you can unroot after making the changes.

Well my nexus 6 is non-vzw (it even says it on their website under myverizon) and it has never allowed me to tether.
I had to root and rom to get it to work.

Even with an unlocked bootloader we need to wipe to root. I guess this may change in the future.

are you sure you put android pay in after you rooted? I haven't seen it worked for anyone who actually rooted the phone. some who put it in before they rooted got it to work??

Use the temporary unroot in SuperSu.
I installed and configured after my phone was rooted.
I can use Android Pay just fine.
All I do is temp unroot.

out of curiosity, did you use a systemless root ? like with chainfire?
This is the first phone I have bought that is not a Verizon phone of some kind. I just ordered a XL tonight from Google store. Said I would have it Thursday. I am coming over from the Turbo. Been a good phone for the last 2 years. I will unlock the bootloader, looks easy enough. Will this have a hotspot app? For now the only thing I want is too unlock and get the hot spot to work. Is it called something different? Maybe I just don't know what I should be looking for. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction. I don't mind reading.
Thanks

Please read through the threads before creating a new one. This question and methodology has been answered many times already for the Pixel. Use the search feature built into XDA. Thank you

There is the mobile hotspot that you can use but with VZW it checks to see if you've paid for the tethering subscription. With a rooted device there are a few ways to bypass the subscription check and use the hotpsot for free.

What plan do you have with Verizon? If not on an unlimited plan, hotspot functionality is baked into the OS and works seamlessly.

Thanks for your reply. I do have still an old Alltel plan with unlimited data. Some other people here I see have missed the main question I have. Maybe I did not ask it right. I have never owned a non Verizon phone. I don't have my new phone yet. I think it ships today. Does it have an app on it for hotspot? Is it called this still on non Verizon phones? Maybe I am making more of this then needed. I just did not know if this was a Verizon thing or phone thing.
Really all I want to do with this is unlock it and make a hot spot work. I'm not going to do much else with it. From reading here before I bought the phone it seemed a good move to buy from google then from Verizon.
Thanks for the help.
Hotspot is built into the rom. You toggle/adjust it just like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in the settings menu an/or pulldown shade.
However, if you're on a Verizon unlimited plan then it won't work unless the build.prop is edited. You can do this with a file explorer, using a build.prop editor app (my preference), with adb, or by installing a rom that already has the edit made. You can search the forum for those instructions. I'm in the same situation as you and have hotspot working.

Thanks you. I will do some reading on this. In my turbo all I did was make a change in the build.prop file. I just did not know if anything would change with non Verizon and newer software on the phone. I paid a long time ago for SQLite so once I'm unlocked and rooted this should work I hope. I have some reading to do.
Thanks again.

The hotspot feature is a part of Android. It does, however, check your carrier subscription to see if hotspot functionality is allowed on your plan upon launching. This is why I asked about data plan earlier.
I hope it works for you, otherwise there are workarounds (root and non-profit methods) available on this forum. Good luck!
