[Q] Kernel issue or bricked? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I tried to upgrade my Galaxy S4 (Canadian, Telus SGH-I337M) to lollipop. I came here and installed the latest Cyanogenmod successfully using the posted instructions. Unfortunately, BlueTooth wasn't working so I decided to uninstall it.
I then thought I'd try CM11 via their auto installer. After taking the phone back to factory settings, I ran the CM installer and got CM11 installed instead. Except with that, my phone lost all audio. No phone communication, no rings, nothing.
So I tried going back to stock and I downloaded and installed the 4.4.2 stock ROM... expect now I have no wi-fi functionality, and a couple of other weird behaviors like very, very slow screen response.
The most likely answer I've found is that somewhere in this process, I flashed the kernel and now my kernel is incompatible with my ROM. I've found what I think is the right kernel, but I can't install it. All of the instructions say to use ODIN, but ODIN restricts me to putting specific file extensions in the box, but these files come as .RAR or .ZIP, and the contents of the archive don't have any of the allowed file extensions (i.e. .BIN files).
At this point, my priority is just getting a working phone again by any means necessary - I don't care whether it's a custom ROM or not, I just want functionality on all of my phone at once! I'm not computer illiterate, but at this point I've outstripped my troubleshooting capability.
Help?

Try installing the stock ROM a second time over the top of your first install of the stock ROM. For some unknown reason installation through Odin doesn't always result in a perfectly functioning device the first time around. Installing the ROM a second time however tends to fix things.

Did you download your stock firmware from sammobile.com?
The firmwares from that site should work fine in Odin.

I've gone through a few stock ROMs. The one I'm working with now seems to be the right one. It's I337M_TLS_I337MVLUFNI2_I337MOYAFNI2_Original.zip
SamMobile says those are the right ones, and I have installed it over itself... repeatedly!
I've done more trouble shooting now and I have issues regardless of what ROM (CM12 or stock 4.4.2) I install. The issues between the two are different in some regards but in either case, the phone is more or less toast!
- Phone calls are VERY slow to respond in both (when I try to make a call, even though I know I have no audio capability).
- No audio at all
- on Stock 4.4.2, no wifi
- Screen is slow to respond on stock, particularly when dismissing the lock screen.
- On CM12, Bluetooth and wifi can't be enabled simultaneously
- CM12 won't play videos (didn't try on stcok)
What have I done?!

Update:
Using a different file recommended by Sammobile (they have more than 1 listed for this phone on their site), and DLing it directly from them , I seem to have stock functionality back. Yaaa!
The most recent ROM (ending in FNI2) didn't work but when I went back to a build about 6 months older (ending in FNC1) that one worked out.
I guess the question then remains: What went wrong, and is there a ROM that should theoretically work for this phone?
Thanks!

You are flashing wrong CSC maybe. Solution:
1. Verify your CSC. Use this APP for know your real CSC. (Pic 1)
2. Go to Sammobile again and download the correct and latest firmware for your CSC.
3. Unzip and flash that firmware via ODIN.
4. Dial *#1234# and tell me what appears :highfive:

1. CSC shows:
Original CSC Code: TLS
Firmware's CSC Code: TLS
Active CSC Code: TLS
CSC Country: Canada
CSC Country ISO: CA
Product Code: SGH-I337ZKATLS
2. After a couple of OTA Updates overnight, the phone is now using firmware I337MVLUFNI2, which is the one I tried from SamMobile that failed, so I had to use a six month older build. which worked fine for some reason.
3. AP, CP, and CSC all show I337MVLUFNI2 now.
I'm now very reluctant to try any custom ROM on this phone after spending 30 hours worrying that I had bricked it! I tried about 5 different ROMs throughout this process that all had varying degrees of that same issue. Is the Canadian S4 SGH-I337M that much different from the i9505? Did I just screw something up royally? I'm happy that my phone is working now, but I'd still like to know what went wrong, or whether customs ROMs are an option for me.

Yes,
That seems to be the case, but should I have been safe in trying to install a custom Lollipop ROM? I'm kind of in a 'once bitten twice shy' state of mind now. I'd like to go to 5.0.2 but after this, I'm not so sure.

How you wish. But remember that Lollipop stock firmware for your device is a leak still or you can try with different custom roms. You will have BUGS. If the device was mine I will wait for the OTA updates but it's only my opinion. I'm not desperate for Lollipop :highfive:

[Q] Change EU version to DBT version with Odin

Dear all,
we have the problem, that we are not able to change a Note 3 free EU version (for example from poland XEO) to a DBT version.
After starting the flashing process everything will stop after short time and Odin shows fail.
Do you have a solution for that?
Many thanks in advance,
Markus
Q&A no? reported!
The answer is simple: Don't flash other region firmwares on your Note 3. Simple

Which Odin-version did you use? For the latest phones, you'll have to use v3.09
Have a look at SamMobile:
Odin 3.09 https://hotfile.com/dl/248246506/848df76/Odin3_v3.09.zip.html
DBT-firmware http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=20383
After this, clear the cache and factory reset via POWER-HOME-VOL UP
Then the CSC should be changed to DBT
It was checked with different Odin versions, 3.09, 3.07 etc.
I have tested it with the BTU und DBT version now and both brick after few seconds.
The recovery of the XEO version works fine with odin.
I give up for today!
Nothing? Reallly no solution for that problem? ;-(
I never thought about putting a different region FW on any of my phones. What would be the advantage of doing so, despite than screwing up some bands so that the phone doesn't work properly anymore?
The advantage is that updates will come earlier, different functions between different FWs etc.

Have you tried to root it? Maybe DBT is yet on your device and with an app like CSC select you will be able to do what you want (be carefully as it is the best way to avoid your knoks warranty)
I don't want to root!
You can build your own tar without the bootloader. I think that it is the only way

Another HONG KONG ( TGY ) Note 3 SM-N9005 with WIFI PROBLEM

Hi all,
I just bought a note 3 on ebay with a fault "wifi can't connect to networks" .
I received it 2 days ago and turned on then turned WIFI on, connected to my network and everything was fine.
After a minute it shows software update available so i let it do that. Downloaded 81MB trough my wifi network then it had the update.
After the update finished I can' turn the WIFI on anymore.
Then I just take the battery out for few minutes, install it back, turn it on and it fine again. Until reboot..... Then battery out, wait, back and fine...
Kies update to the latest firmware-nothing changed...
After a quiet few hrs of reading forums i made a decision to try flash a UK official rom from sammobile. Odin failed. Then i installed custom CWM and tried install OMEGA ROM V6 . It was looking all good until reboot. Stock on the note 3 logo....
I di give a go anther UK firmware but no luck.
No im back to HONG KONG TGY again and the phone but fi.
Simle i just can't turn it on.... It shows turning on theen after 2-5 minutes it just off.
If i reboot the device WIFI always try to turn it self on, without pressing it..... This was a same when it worked. I tried to reboot the phone without removing the batte and WIFI OFF but it was rebooting and WIFI was "turning on" but wont work...
So th Q. is: Where can I go from TGY or can I change modem or CSC or something to give a go?
Right now it official TGY:
Android: 4.3
Baseband: N9005ZHUMDJ9
Kernel: 3.4.0-2061029

Build number: JSS15J.N9005ZHUDMK1
In KIES:
PDA: MK1 PHONE: MJ9 CSC MK1 (TGY)
Anyone got any tip how can i fix this?
Thanks a lot!
Sammy
Reflash the custom ROM and update your baseband to MJ7.
Though, a word of warning. As far as I understand, you can't go back to a lower baseband once you do this.
Still TGY after costume rom and baseband changed....

I had a go a few hrs ago and i managed to change the rom to omega rom.
Kies was showing:
:
PDA: ML2 PHONE: MJ9 CSC MK3 (TGY)
How can CSC still TGY???
After this I downloaded a new GSM modem ( N9005XUDML2 ) trough omega rom and installed succesefully.
Now KIES shows
PDA: ML2 PHONE: MJ7 CSC MK3 (TGY)
I did belive after install the N9005XUDML2 the baseband should be ML2....
Wifi still not working and still shows "turning on" then after a few minits it just looks like it off.
After I reboot it it is "turn on" again..... (without me turning on)
So again how is still on CSC:: MK3 (TGY) as TGY is the Hong Kong provider but everything is different now.....
Also why wifi is always on automatically in boot up?
Thanks for ANY help!
Try flashing the pre rooted MJ7 ROM (Odin) from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2461929
If it goes like how it went on my TGY Note 3, the flashing will give an error when it tries to flash system, but before that, it should update your baseband to MJ7. Custom ROMs should work fine after that.

Wifi fine again temperately?
Here is some update:
I removed the battery last night and left a phone like that. This morning i had start the phone and the WIFI was OFF and i was able to turn it on. Now basically works how it should as i can turn it on / off as many times i wanted to. Im sore if I reboot the phone without battery removed it will have the same problem again... I will try this tonight as i will set the phone up for my self during the day..... If WIFI goes wrong after reboot again i will leave the battery out for a night again.....
The Q. are the same. Why WIFI is "try to be on" after normal reboot? ( battery in phone ) ? After custom rom installed why it is still sows CSC is TGY?
Thanks !
Sammy
I'm at a loss, man.
Tried any of the CSC changing app?
And in my previous post, I was trying to get your baseband updated. That solved a lot of issues for me.

No longer getting a 4G connection

So I tried a few roms this morning (Resurrection Remix, Goldfinger, Imperium) and since then, i've noticed I'm no longer getting a 4G connection. It's either 3G or H+.
I have no idea why, can anyone help me out?
Before anyone asks, I've tried *#1234# and I get the message "Connection problem or invalid MMI code."
can anyone help me out?
I've now got CM12 installed, after a complete wipe of everything, and still no 4g -_-
You have to be on a stock ROM to get the AP, CP, and CSC of your S4, as the code only works through the stock dialer. Speaking of which, install a stock ROM and tell us if the problem continues. If it does, BEFORE flashing back to your custom ROM, please post the following information.
1. Model Number
2. Android Version, found by going to Settings > More > About device.
3. Firmware Version (AP, CP, CSC), found by dialing *#1234# in the dialer or by installing Phone Info from the Play Store and running it.
4. Service Provider
5. Country
6. Is the phone rooted? (Yes/No)
7. Is a custom ROM installed? (Yes/No, and the name of the ROM)
1. Model Number - GT-I9505
2. Android Version - 4.4.2
3. Firmware Version - AP: I9505XXUFNB8 CP: I9505XXUFNB8 CSC: I9505BTUFNB3
4. Service Provider - 3 UK
5. Country - United Kingdom
6. Is the phone rooted? - At the moment, since I've just installed stock 4.4.2 - No.
7. Is a custom ROM installed? - No. Stock.
Appreciate the help!
You didn't mention whether you were able to get LTE on the stock ROM. But, check to see if your network is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM in settings.
No im still only getting 3G/H+ and yes, its set to LTE by default.
I always get 4G when sitting at my computer, but ever since I flashed a couple different roms last night, I've not been able to get a 4G signal. I havn't a clue what's happened.
Flash the stock modem for your phone through Odin. Do it twice if need be. Sometimes the modem firmware fails to correctly register leading to odd problems like this. Check to be sure everything works, then flash the custom ROM of your choice, or stay stock but debloat your ROM.

How do I know what my stock modem is? Thats what confuses me.
If you're unlocked, you can use any stock modem you want from the modem thread in General. Grab the one at the bottom of the list as it's the latest.

ok I flashed the XXUGNG2 modem. If im not mistaken XX designates United Kingdom, and NG2 seems to be the latest of those. So thats the one I flashed. So far there doesn't seem to be any difference though. Checked it via *#1234# and CP reads I9500XXUGNG2 so It looks like it flashed properly.
Ok crisis averted. It seems 3 must be doing some kind of maintenance in my area because I just tried an EE sim card in my phone and it recieves a 4G signal just fine. Nice of 3 to do maintenance at exactly the same time I decided to try a couple of new roms.... Just my luck.
Anyway, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong my phone after all, but thanks for your time trying to help me.

How can I return to stock firmware from CM 12.1 (Android 5.1)

Hi,
My Device is:
SM-N9005 LTE (32GB)
It was running 4.4. Kitkat and I tried to flash Android 5.0 via Odin. Everything went fine except wifi which did not turn on at all. While searching I found out that many users faced this and there isn't a best fix available yet. Probably I flashed a wrong firmware which may have caused some csc mismatch or kernel issue. I definitely needed the wifi back so i went on to try and experiment more on the device which brought me to CM 12.1 and I flashed it via TWRP. It brought back my wifi but now i miss some of my staple apps on this device especially S Pen Stylus & S health. I tried the simple method - downloading a firmware from sammobile and flashing it through Odin but it failed in Odin. Is there any way I can go back to to Stock firmware? My knox is at 0x1 but it doesn't matter much.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,
I already tried that but it gives this error.
Maybe you have updated your bootloader that's why you can't downgrade. Try lollipop roms. Or try a tw based custom rom with twrp.
What is the baseband and bootloader on your phone?
Match the last 4 characters to firmware here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N9005/
I'm sorry for hijacking this post, but something fairly similar happened to me.
I've got an SM-N900, decided to update to Lollipop but despite all my efforts I've been getting awful battery life so I'd like to go back to KK.
Right now I'm using
Bootloader & PDA: N900UBUEBOF1
CSC: N900PGUEBOF2
Baseband: N900UBUEBOC3
and would like to go back to
PDA: N900UBUDND1
CSC: N900UWADND3
I've been reading and found that you need to flash this if your bootloader is on Lollipop, this is where my doubts begin. How do I know if my bootloader has been updated to Lollipop? If my BL is on Lollipop and I flash that file, can I install any KK rom?
Thank you for reading this, and I apologize for hijacking this thread.

32GB TGY Motherboard and custom ROMs

I have a question regarding a motherboard I bought. I used Phone Info and I get the following information:
Phone Model: SM-N9005/Galaxy Note 3
Device Type: hlte
Product Name: hltezh
CSC Code: TGY
Bootloader Version: N9005ZHUENB1
Baseband Version: N9005ZHUENA6
Phone Info says there is a newer firmware (N9005ZSUGPJ2) but when I try the firmware updater via the Settings app it says I'm already on the latest update. I also can't find the current bootloader (N9005ZHUENB1) and baseband (N9005ZHUENA6) on Sammobile.
Do I need to update to Android 5.0 as it is still on 4.4.2 and I want to use LineageOS 16.0. Will the current firmware (4.4.2) work when I want to root the phone and install TWRP to install LineageOS 16.0?

But can I flash it via Odin on this motherboard? I've read on another thread that it is used for 16GB TGY motherboards because it has another PIT file.

Try it, if it failed, don't flash with CSC, if it also failed, just leave it like that.
You want to try LOS16, it is fine, I booted Pie ROMs, RR, with KitKat bootloader older than yours.
If you had any problems later, just flash modem & bootloader files only.
No need to flash the whole stock ROM.
