[Q] Flashing a rom and warranty - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Note 4 (N910F) which is currently on Vodafone in the UK.
I have been having issues with my battery life and one thing I would like to do is flash a stock rom to get rid of all the Vodafone bloat on the device.
Will this affect my warranty on the phone? I have heard stories about some sort of e-fuse on the device.
Do I need to root to do this? I want to be able to ideally get direct OTA updates from Samsung. If I flash will I lose the data currently on the phone?

I did exactly this today with my 910f. I too am in UK and on Vodafone. I downloaded the btu version from sammobile and flashed with odin 3.09. After flashing a did a factory reset. (The factory reset will wipe your current installed apps and data so skip this step if you wish to keep them but that would counter what your trying to achieve here) No you don't need root. No this doesn't effect the knox efuse. Warranty still intact. Happy flashing

Does the phone need to be network unlocked?
If not, does flashing unlock it?

I don't believe it being locked or not will make a difference but flashing the btu will almost certainly make no difference to the network lock. I don't know if mine is locked or not but I suspect it will be if your is since we both have them from the same source

Has all the Vodafone bloat gone from yours and can you update OTA from Samsung?

Yes and yes. That was the ppint in me doing it. Wasn't really bothered about the Vodafone apps but if it ooffers any increase in performance by using the unbranded rom then I'll take it over having useless Vodafone apps. My main reason though is to get the updates from Samsung soon as they're released instead of having to wait a few extra weeks for Vodafone to make the release available.

Is there any reason why I SHOULDN'T update to OTA 4.3?

As the title states, is there any reason why I shouldn't update to OTA 4.3?
I'm currently running a stock, non-rooted SGH-I337M on Bell. I'm just wondering about KNOX...if I start messing with my phone, should I do it from 4.2?
I updated to 4.3 and I'm seeing a little jank, and it feels less robust than 4.2.2 was. Also, if you intend to root or do a custom recovery/ROM, you will have to wait a few weeks until the bootloader is unlocked and some more cutting gets done on 4.3 before you can do anything like that.

So, as I understand it then...
...if I update to MK6, I will have KNOX.
The only reason I should be concerned about tripping KNOX is if I need to send the phone in for warranty, OR if I want to put the phone on some sort of enterprise server? If I don't care about either of these things, I should flash the OTA...and then root/ROM without worry?

Virtually no carriers actually check to see if you're rooted.. Once it's accepted for warranty by the carrier it's sent to Samsung and disassembled. It carries some risk, but realistically it's not something to lose sleep over.
I'm in the same boat. I do want to root my phone soon then flash it when the 1 year warranty runs out. Should I root now or after my update? (It's asking to update now)
Would I lose root after my update anyway?

If you don't care about either then updating to MK6 isn't going to hurt. The only other concern may be that as far as I know there is no way to revert back to 4.2.2/MG1. I have heard some people were having weird issues around OTAs though like incomplete or frozen downloads and having to start it over again. You can also flash through Kies on your computer now. I assume most of the OTA issues have been resolved now, but imho using a usb cable is always the better practice.

Yes. I had to unroot to get OTA though, then re-root afterwards.
You guys might want to review this thread as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535801. There are other options to OTA and Kies.

The repair process works a little different in my area. If I have an issue, I take my phone to the store...I use a loaner phone while they send mine to a repair facility. If the repair facility finds a reason not to perform repairs under warranty, they don't.

10-4.
Last question...rooting doesn't give that "custom" warning at boot, does it? I think that's only once you install a custom recovery?
If you are not planning on rooting or anything I say go for it. It seems a lot smoother for me, battery life seems far better, im getting slightly better service, and lastly we have built in emojis now (granted you can only send them as an mms through text but you are able to see them system wide now on apps such as ig or twitter etc) I personally say go for it.

I think it does, but honestly can't remember... did mine on Nov 23rd and flashed a custom rom within an hr of rooting.

My plan was to go stock for a year then when the initial warranty runs out (I have sweet extended one through the re-seller) I was going to go with a custom rom. That's what I did with my S1. It doesn't look like I'll have the luxury. I already updated once and got a secure boot. Lesson learned I guess.
Slow Charging
The new update really takes a long time to charge if you are using a 3rd party charger. Idk if its true for everyone, or if this was done on purpose but I notice my gs4 charging wayyyyy slower than on 4.2.2.

Sprint S7 unlocked: Is there a way to update it safely?

Long time reader...first time poster
I bought an unlocked sprint s7 from ebay and it works like a dream and i was wondering if there was a safe method to update the phone WITHOUT ruining the unlock that the seller put on the phone.
Current software is update PC5 and i would love to benefit from security and bug fixes in new releases.
Thanks in advance!

Most likely not a carrier unlock do to a unlocked padlock during boot animation as well as samsung pay not working due to software mods that im guessing made it unlocked in the first place. Thanks for the reply!

Bootloader unlock and sim unlock are two different things. You said it has an unlock pad on boot up screen. That means it's bootloader is unlocked. Which means if I am correct if it has a custom recovery you are unable to do future ota updates. Can and possibly brick your phone. You can flash a ton that has the new update no issues developers are usually fairly quick to update there rom on the latest ota.

I can confirm that updating over OTA will NOT screw with the unlock of the device. If your samsung pay does not work i would disable knox with a package disabler app to receive samsung pay in you new updated state.
OTA update from PC5 to PH7 on unlocked phone went smoothly.
Thanks
I have a unlocked Sprint S7 but im outside of America, is there any way i can update without losing the unlock? i don't want to end with an expensive brick.
Im stuck in G930PVPU2APC5 and i can't receive OTA updates
I bought unlocked sprint s7 that I'm using with metro PCS, but it's not letting me update the profile and because of that I'm not getting the wifi hotspot option. How do I get it to work?
@ThaDunder : You must initially do it manually over samsung smart switch then OTA will work @zirnitra : Sadly wifi tethering is not working for me either...no idea how to fix it =/ must be a symptom of the unlocking like wifi calling

Problems with last carrier update - best way to backup and install different update?

Since my last carrier update (two months ago), my phone has been occasionally restarting, or not allowing the screen to turn on (which I then need to reset my phone to get it started again). I'm in Canada, on Telus (it's an exynos chip).
My phone isn't rooted, nor do I want it since I've had to use the warranty once, and want to wait till its run out before rooting (although, I've heard that different countries regard rooting differently, so if you know that in Canada they don't care about root and warranty, let me know, it might change my mind).
I'm wondering two things: First, can I install other carrier updates for my s7 edge without root? If so, how?
Second, what's the best way for me to backup my phone without root? I've tried Helium in the past, and it's an exercise in frustration to say the least (unless there's been a major update in the last few months that I missed).

Xda is for everyone who need help. U can try flash stock stock rom via odin. That works most of the time.
Edit: u can try back up everything with Samsung account but idk how that works. There might also be possibility with Samsung pc software (kies or smart switch I think)

[Q] Bringing in an unlocked phone and putting on T-Mobile firmware

Hi,
I was wondering if bringing in an unlocked phone from another carrier and putting on T-Mobile firmware will disable Samsung pay or Knox. If not, where would be the place to look on how to do this, a little confusing finding the right spot.
Thank you

I done it, My phone originally a Sprint S7 Edge. Got it unlocked switched to Tmobile and installed the Tmobile firmware with no problem. I still got Samsung Pay just had to re-register for it. My Knox hasn't been tripped.

Knox and Samsung Pay shouldn't be affected, since you're just installing a different fully stock firmware. You should find instructions easily on how to install firmwares with Odin.
I tried to install the T-Mobile Nougat firmware on my G935U(the USA unlocked model), and i coudn't get it to work, something about the system image maybe being too big for my system partition.

New Tablet

Hi all, my wife has just bought me a tablet for my birthday it is locked to o2 and caries the code sm-t819. I have plenty of experience of rooting phones and flashing rom but never on a Samsung which I believe is different to normal. can somebody pease point me in the wright direction for this? I really am not bothered about keeping the LTE ability as I will not be using it with data.
thanks for any help

In all honesty, I'd load Odin on your PC and the flash the Official Samsung Rom from Sammoble. Touchwiz is pretty good these days and has been fast on my T715 for the last 2 years. If you intend to use this tab without LTE, remember to turn on Airplane mode and then wifi. If you don't it may drain the battery looking for a signal etc.

You don't need to get the tablet unlocked and any firmware you download from Sammobile and install using Odin doesn't affect your warranty.
When looking on Sammobile, just look for the latest firmware that's UK or failing that, O2. The UK firmware contains less bloat of course. Once flashed, just use Nova laucher or Google Now Laucher to get that stock feel. :victory:

You need to make a decision on whether you are prepared to possibly void your warranty. Flashing anything custom trips KNOX and can potentially void the warranty.

I am completely fine with that, It is a second hand unit any way so is probably out of warranty any way. I have flashed plenty before but never samsung, so never had to deal with odin and knox, also with there being loads of different model numbers it is a bit confusing which roms can go on which tabs.

If you choose to stick with Samsung stock and don't root, I'd go with this on Sammobile using Odin. https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-tab-s2/SM-T819/BTU/download/T819XXU2BRB2/212254/
