when i had my arc used to have this problem : on some roms\launchers after every reboot my apps would simply disappear from launcher so I figured out a way to fix this that should basically work on any device\rom\launcher .
the cause behind this missing apps is that the device boots(the launcher) before sd-card so the launcher wont see your sd-card apps and wont list them in your apps list.
you'll need : 1-rooted device 2-any 3rd party launcher 3-titanium backup
1-install any 3rd party launcher ( like nova ) , beware that u wont be using this 3rd party launcher
2-using titanium backup move that launcher to sd-card
3-now every time you reboot your phone it will ask you to select a default launcher(cause of the launcher u moved to sd-card) thus no launcher would be started before the system
4- wait some seconds so the sd-card could boot up then select your wanted launcher as default and enjoy
this worked for me on my old arc on different roms it should work on other devices
I hope I helped

hello ,
can somebody please help ..I am using CM7 AmeriCanAndroid 051211 build and it happened may be due to my fault that i used the old data.img from the previous version. i set my launcher pro as default and it started crashing . I need to set it back to AWD Laucher so that i can atleast get the options to work on the problem.
The launcher pro is crashing but I am sure AWD launcher will work fine .. Please let me know a way to either go the the settings menu or any way where i can atleast start my phone.
download this
install it with droid exploer
press your home buttom
select awd
update it.
done.
thank-you much...
for future reference when something like this happens, you go into settings/applications/manage applications and search for the app you set to default, or the launcher app, open it and clear defaults, then in your case you press the home button and it will ask you again which launcher you want to use, and you could've selected AWD launcher.
so what if you can't access the phon's settings sincs everything just keeps crashing?
as a last ditch, you can boot to recovery and format the data partition. that has all of your settings so, you will have to go through the first run setup, but that should fix your problem if it's just a setting issue.
good luck.

try on factory data reset.
1. try under the manage application clear data.
2. try on different launcher see it happens to other too?
3. some version of launcher might crash with the version of android you use. you need to find out yourself.
4. worse to worse you need to full factory reset. and reinstall the launcher see it happen to crash or not.
This goes out to all those who are experiencing the Launcher FC issue with AOKP Milestone 4 / Build 28.
I tried installing AOKP over the Chinese Leak ICS Chainfire Repack. This could be one of the reasons the Stock Launcher FCs
Solution :
IMPORTANT ! : This solution will wipe / reset your phone. So use Titanium Backup to backup your apps and data
First ensure you are currently on a properly rooted ICS ROM (Chinese leak, Chainfire Repack, AOSP v5 or earlier, etc.)
Backup your data using Titanium Backup!
Install AOSP v6 as per the instructions in the OP here (if you don't already have it)
Wipe to Factory Defaults / Reset *Just being cautious, but you could try without this and restart from step 1 if it does not work*
Boot and set up your Google account (if not already done)
Install a launcher of your choice (I use ADW Launcher EX, but others should hopefully work too)
Set the new launcher as the default (select the check box at the bottom of the window that shows up when you press the home button before you click on the new launcher's name). The next time you press the home button, the new launcher should be shown automatically, no selections needed
Reboot to recovery
Flash AOKP as instructed in 2nd post here (Don't wipe !)
Reboot!
In case you want to switch back to the Stock Launcher after flashing AOKP, go to Settings -> Apps -> select the new Launcher -> scroll down and press Clear Defaults
Then press the home button and tick the checkbox at the bottom and select the Stock Launcher.
Hope this helps ! Have fun !
Cheers !
post some pics please
After some messing around, I was able to get ADW Launcher EX as my default Home button launcher on my rooted Kindle Fire HD 8.9. :victory:
As usual, the normal disclaimers of modifying your system and potentially bricking it apply.
Previously, I had been using GO Launcher HD as my default launcher to replace the Kindle carousel, using the method of moving the launcher APK to the /system/app directory and setting permissions of the APK using a file manager to User Read/Write/-, Group read/-/-, Others read/-/-, and then rebooting. Unfortunately, this method does not work for ADW Launcher EX. Using the GO Launcher method for ADW Launcher results in a boot loop where ADW immediately crashes with error messages that it has stopped.
If you do find yourself in this kind of boot loop, you can make your way out by navigating to the Search icon, which will bypass the launcher and open the Search application; search for your file manager, like ES File Explorer, and open it so you can get back into your root directory and uninstall the ADW launcher from /system/app. Once that's done, reboot and you'll be back to the regular launcher.
To use ADW Launcher EX as the default launcher, you will need:
Root
Titanium Backup Pro
1. Install ADW Launcher EX as you would any other app.
2. Launch ADW Launcher EX at least once
3. Go into Titanium Backup Pro, find ADW Launcher in the list, long press, and select "Covert to system app"
4. Pressing the Home button should immediately present you with the option to select a launcher. Select ADW and set is as default.
5. Test and reboot.
6. Enjoy your speedy new launcher
This method should work for other versions of ADW, but for all intents and purposes, I have only tried this on ADW Launcher EX. If others have tried with other versions or launchers, please do chime in.
One strange thing that I did notice after doing this was that Titanium Backup Pro, when relaunched, was hanging while "checking for root priveleges". To remedy, I had to go into SuperSU and "Forget" Titanium Backup Pro. After doing that, I rebooted, and granted Titanium Backup Pro root rights and was off on my merry way. I'm not too sure why it happened.
I'm also not entirely sure what Titanium Backup Pro does with "Covert to system app" that makes it work, vs the GO Launcher method of manually moving the apk and changing permissions. If someone can enlighten me on this, it can go a long way in providing modders way of doing this for free, without requiring Titanium Backup + Pro license key (albeit I strongly recommend it, as the Pro features are very useful).
Thank You!
Thank you so much! I have been searching the internet for the last several days trying to find a solution to this. Among a dozen other attempts, I also tried nearly exactly as you suggested, but with one difference. I used my .apk file that I backed up of the app on Titanium, sent to a folder on my computer, then loaded onto my Kindle HD. No go. I just deleted it, and loaded it back on a you suggested. Simply through the Google Play store. Voila! It worked loading it like a regular Google Play app! LOL!
THANK YOU!:good::good::good:
Thanks for the tip. Anyone figure out how to add widgets?
It's simply a matter of installing the widget apk into /system/app and setting permissions to user read/write/- and group and other to read/-/-
There is a thread in this forum with instructions and the apk but here is the one i have in my system/app directory

Yeah the solution was the wierdest thing. I think it has something to do with processes that happen on the initial run. I think between this method and the GO method, most launchers can be covered using either or
Thanks!
Thanks so much from me too. I've had my KFHD a couple of weeks. I liked ADW Launcher EX but it seemed a bit flaky falling back to the carousel each time you pressed the home button. Your method took about 2 minutes and makes my Fire look and feel like the real deal. I registered here just to share my thanks.
I also found that Titanium backup was the only method that worked. I tried this with Apex launcher myself and finally it worked with TB. I also made a video although the process is fairly simple. http://youtu.be/ebL6MOOzayk
Not sure what the OP did wrong, but I had no problem installing ADW Launcher EX as the default launcher by copying to /system/app as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069668
I also installed Go Launcher HD and EX. I only used ES File Explorer. I have the HD 8.9 with 8.4.3 firmware.
can you freeze all the streaming apps (netflix e.t.c) or delete them via root? i don't need them and all they do is take up space with the limited memory it has already.
I don't believe you even need root for this, you can just go to the Android settings->apps menu, find each app you don't want and press disable.
This was one of the first things I did when I switched on my shield as I will never use Plex and cluttered menu entries annoy me!
dont delete most system/bloatware
Hi, I have the NSTV for almost a month & I crashed it the first day when I gain root, flashed TWRP, ect....so how did it crash?
Well after succesfully restarting the system & setting it up again! I started to delete the bloatware & I deleted most of the apps that I didn't want..until I installed my favorite keyboard app which takes less space & the first thing I did was delete the leanback keyboard......My NSTV was NOT happy as soon as I did that....intents of dialog messages flooded the screen & crashed it
so the next thing I did was boot into bootlooder & flash a recovery.zip with all the images..except stock recovery...I kept TWRP...after that I set my system back up installed link2sd again to delete the other bloatware, but this time I disabled leanback keyboard in favor of the other app....can you guess what happen next?
YES....it crashed again....so I decided to delete all the bloatware that I didn't want & kept leanback keyboard.
Now I decided to use a bluetooth keyboard from now on...but I wish the leanback keyboard will stop popping up even though im using an external keyboard...

that is highly annoying, so even though you have a 3rd party keyboard app installed the leanback keyboard popes up aswell? i use swift keyboard and usb keyborad additionally.

You can freeze the system apps such as all the bloatware you don't want without root, but to get rid of the apps permanentally you WILL need root...also my system stop crashing after installing some xposed modules that deal with input type....but anyway as long as you don't touch any actual system related apps you will be okay.
