I'm trying to use Heimdall to flash a kernel because I have the NI1 kernel and can't find any other way to root. I don't have access to a Windows machine so I can't use Odin. When I try to flash the kernel with heimdall, it says I don't have a kernel partition (nor KERNEL). I checked the PIT file and sure enough, kernel is nowhere to be found.
So how do I flash a kernel with Heimdall?
Not sure what you're going to do with this. Personally, I'd find a Windows pc and use Odin. Messing with the partitions can brick your device if you don't know what you're doing.

I'm following this guide http://www.droidviews.com/root-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-android-4-4-4-kitkat-firmware-i337ucufnj4/
Basically, it seems like the NI1 kernel is not rootable, so you flash a different one, root, then flash back. You think it'll brick if I flash a different kernel to the boot partition?

Not sure how to fix but flashing a modem with mobile Odin can be scary with this phone cuz of Loki if u can get into recovery wipe everything and reflash ur ROM kernel and maybe the stock modem
Otherwise u need a windows PC and run Odin
For future reference its way less trouble some to just flash a modem in recovery works just the same

You really don't have to flash a kernel thru odin? Are you even booting at all?

My phone very often lost mobile network It also catch edge when others phones get 3g.
I tried to flash modem from latest stock rom for my region.
Mobile odin ver. 3.76. It's really strange that it flash something.
Now when I start it got "unsupported device"
I had WanamLite and KT kernel when I flash. Device shows as i9505. May be it is reason why it flash.
get into recovery and flash a kernel made for your device. it will boot.
NOTE: AT&T variant. Phone is running 4.2.2 with MF3 baseband
So I'm helping a friend root his phone and run a custom ROM. The root went successfully (motochopper) and we installed SafeStrap and then we did a backup and wipe and then installed a 4.3 Google Play edition ROM (first mistake as we meant to download the 4.2 version)
I have the stock firmware zip for the phone and figured that that was the way to fix it, but I can't figure out how to get it to install. Through ADB it gives me an error after starting DAEMON. I converted the zip to a .tar and tried to use ODIN but ODIN stops working as soon as I tell it to run. I made sure I had the most current, correct drivers and am running ODIN3 v1.85. I thought maybe if I put it on the SD card I could install it though that method via the stock recovery but it says there is an invalid arguement.
What am I doing wrong?
Help

What stock firmware zip do you have? You have to have the mf3 .tar.md5 file if you're trying to use odin
How does he have mf3 and motochopper works? It shouldn't. Also you have to have a custom recovery to flash the gpe rom and we don't. The closest thing we have is safestrap.

I'm on the SamMobile site trying to find the firmware and it says that they don't have it. I find that weird that such a popular model doesn't have the firmware needed to do this. I put in the correct model and country
EDIT: nevermind.
I usually do this for the Note 3 I have, and it comes in really useful for devs, those running other roms, etc, that just want to upgrade the modem/wifi, bootloader, and CSC without messing with everything else. It's also handy to replace the stock kernel if you need it for whatever reason (towelroot anyone? ). Since I recently picked up a Tab Pro 8.4 from swappa, I did this for mine to do the upgrade, and thought I'd be nice and go ahead and share the extracted parts for everyone else to enjoy.
Here's the MODEM+NON-HLOS (both together and as separate files), Bootloader, Kernel, CSC, and Recovery I extracted from the new T320 1NK1 Firmware. In desktop Odin 3.09, Kernel and recovery would go in AP. Modem + NON-HLOS goes in CP, Bootloader in BL. If you flash the bootloader separately, make sure to tick the box that says bootloader update.

If you have trouble getting the bootloader and/or Modem to stick, install "Triangle Away" by @Chainfire and follow the directions to reset your counter (even if it says zero), then boot into download mode, and re-flash them with Odin and they should stick (WARNING: Triangle Away WILL TRIP KNOX).
NOTE: It has also been noted by several people that booting directly into download mode from a powered-off device and flashing the BL/Modems will make them stick as well.
To verify, you can download "Phone Info - Samsung" and make sure that all applicable items say either T320UEU1ANK1 or T320XAR1ANK1 (Bootloader,, PDA and CSC). NOTE: Not all functions of this app work for our tablets, but most do.

I'm planning on rooting and going back to an old Kernal. After rooting, I am going back to the NK1 kernal but I'm on T320UEU1ANK1. Can I go back to NK1 kernal using the T320XAR1ANK1 kernal you your post or do I have to find the T320UEU1ANK1? I know you have the full T320UEU1ANK1 image but I just to ODIN T320UEU1ANK1 kernal.
Thanks in advance.

Just a question but I believe it does not affect root, if I were to install the modem/firmware I would not lose root correct? Also, if you were to flash the whole package, does towel root or manual root (think I used Hashcode script vs towel root) does the new firmware allow root access? I don't believe these devices are as locked down as a carrier device, but just wondering! When people refer to firmware and modem, what part is the firmware on this actually? I see the modem, but is firmware part of the NON-HLOS or what ?Thanks!
Edit: Seeing another thread, seems CF Auto-Root will still work, answering my above questions, thanks and sorry for not fully researching first!

My Tab Pro 8.4 (Wifi) shipped with the latest firmware already installed. I didn't want to use CF Auto-Root because it trips the Knox flag, so I flashed this kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786800) and then was able to use TowelRoot, which doesn't trip Knox.
Nice job. I upgraded using the full image, downgraded the kernel, rooted my T320, restored your kernel. Very simple and all worked great. Thanks for this.
@toastido Could you give me a link to Kernel BNI1 (Portuguese version) plz?
Thanks in advance.
I am currently running Optimal ROM with OD5 bootloader. Just got back into the rooted world last week after a warranty replacement stroke of luck. To be able to access SS to flash a different ROM, do I just flash the NCG kernel I have and boot?
Edit: Been out of the loop for a while and don't want to bork this thing
Anybody?
You can use flashfire which is a mobile odin and is in the playstore [root]Flashfire or you can safestrap. http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/guide-safestrap-access-odin-t3126686. Install busybox and and the safestrap bo3 in the link I provided. Make sure you install ss after busybox. The NI2 kernal flasher when used will install a kitkat kernel and bring you into ss.
Before all this download this zip and extract it.https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347777436 What you are looking to keep are the firmware and kernel zips. YOU MUST FLASH A KERNEL OR FIRMWARE AS THE LAST THING BEFORE EXITING SS. Otherwise you will get a blank screen.
Solution if you forget - battery pull - restart phone - ss symbol will appear - hit it and reenter ss.
Place everything I've told you to download on your ext sd. When you wipe - do not wipe ext sd.
example - If you're going from od5 to og5 you will ant to flash the og5 kernel as the last thing before leaving ss- just follow the rom's installation instructions to the letter
SS is already installed. I am running Optimal w/OD5 bootloader. I was wondering if just flashing NCG kernel would boot me back to SS screen. I'm old school and have been using Odin haven't tried FF and seem to see more posts of bricks with peeps using FF.

Im on Ubuntu and I need to flash the latest rom (6.0.1) using Heimdall but I'm really lost with the process.
The thing is, the file I downloaded is the .tar.md5 format and Heimdall cant read it directly through the GUI version and from what I've read on some forums, I need to flash it using the command line option.
But, how do I do it?
