[Q]Cannot see NAS on LAN - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a new Samsung Note 4 that I have given a fixed IP to on my Netgear router. For some reason it cannot see my Synology 213 NAS ( also fixed IP) either with ES File explorer or with the android apps such as DS Finder. I can connect with quick connect via the internet but not directly with the LAN. ES filer explorer shows up other computers on the LAN just not the NAS. I have tried another android phone and it shows the NAS. All of the devices are in the same domain.
I dont know if there is there something I can do on the NAS for this latest added device on the network to see it or is it an Android or Samsung Galaxy Note 4 problem?
Any help appreciated

Too many possible factors involved. :/
Try "Solid Explorer", I found that app to be quite capable: Jump > Network > SMB/CIFS > "+" > Scan.
Check if your NAS gets listed.

Hi
try the app "fing" on your note 4 to search for network devices.
can it find the NAS?

I would hazard a guess it's the Netgear router. If any device on my network moved from there original access point, my router would kill connections for everything. Hence, I ditched the Netgear in favour of a TP-LINK.

I'm starting to think it could be the netgear router. Its strange, the Note can see other wired devices on the LAN just not the NAS. Other android phones can see the NAS. Maybe have to put up with it till I can afford a new router.
Thanks for all the replies

Tried the app, it shows the NAS, Success and its showing that port 5001 isnt open to it, so now I've got something to work on :good: Just have to configure the NAS now.

router settings help with wifi

hi guys,
we have a wireless network at home with 4 laptops and 1 desktop which is the main computer connected to the netgear wireless router.
I have just purchased an o2 xdaiis, i tried connecting via wifi for 2 days with no success, then i decided to look at the settings on the router where i found the following
we had mode g which supports 802.11g
so i changed this to g+b which supports both 802.11g and 802.11b,i also had to change from channel 7 to channel 10 to get the laptops to work, but when doing this the main desktop didnt work,
this allowed me to connect with my xda and all laptops imediateley with excellent signal strengh,
The main desktop is my dads and he was not too happy when he came to connect so i had to put settings back to the original,
Could some one please help me with the connection on the main desktop computer with the g+b settings
Thanks in advance
Alan
there is a patch somewhere here that allows some of the phone (not sure about yours) to connect to g-mode (in b-speed). Try searching for it.
I wonder why the desktop is having problems with the new settings though.

Connecting to a WiFi HDD

I have a router that accepts a connection to a USB HDD. Right now I access that HDD through PointShare on my computer. But I am thinking of getting a Nexus 7 so am curious if it is possible, through an app, or in WiFi settings to find that HDD and access files I have on it. Does anyone here have access to a hard drive on your network through an Android device?
I can access my NAS running NFS on my network using ES File Explorer. Also my HTPC running Samba...

I do, but its a WesternDigital ethernet NAS. I use WD2go from Google Play. Works pretty good, can access and listen to music, access(but not change documents just yet), and view and download pictures all over 3g or wifi.

Mine is an I-O Data Device, so I guess that means I'm out of luck?
Didn't know these things were maker specific. Thought you just needed som address to access it.

What kind of server options can you setup through your router? If you can get an FTP daemon or Samba server, it'll be very easy to setup a connection and stream files or media.
If you router can't do anything, you can still setup a server on your computer rather easily (Windows has a built-in SMB/CIFS server). It's a bit more inconvenient since your computer will have to be on whenever you want to access your files.
Regardless, hard drive make should not matter.

I didn't know for a couple of days of setting it up that there was an app. You can access most HDDs through internet, just more trouble to setup. You'll need your main IP and know a few things about port forwarding, then again samba only used to require a computer signin name and password.

Can I make tablet an AP?

I want to make my tablet a Wi-Fi hotspot so I can share files by connecting my phone to the tablet Wi-Fi ap, and start a ftp server.
Can it be done? I tried foxfi but it crashed when I tried to enable AP.
I can use my phones tether option, but when I do my ftp app says "please connect to a network"
Thanks

To clarify, I want to share ftp from my phone, connected to host AP on my nexus 10, and access on my nexus 10. I have been able to connect my laptop and tablet to my phone AP, and successfully shared files (apache2 http server) from my laptop to tablet, but this requires my laptop to be constantly on, also my phone.
Bump.....

Sigh, I really wish I could get it working.
I downloaded an iwconfig binary but it says:
Code:
# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 no wireless extensions.
ip6tnl0 no wireless extensions.
p2p0 no wireless extensions.
Im confused what you are trying to accomplish. If you host the FTP on your phone, and want to connect the Nexus 10 to the FTP to share files, then all you do is on your phone turn on wifi tether, and connect to the wireless network the phone creates from your N10. I dont think it is possible to make a tablet an access point that doesnt have a cell service internet connection. In order for the Nexus 10 to be an "access point" it would actually be just a repeater from your routers (or phones, or whatever) internet connection. But you already have that on your phone and by making your phone the hotspot you just connect your tablet to the phone like it was connecting to any normal wireless network.

No, I just want my Nexus 10 to be able to HOST [read: have IP 192.168.43.1], to be able to connect my phone to it [192.168.43.105], so that my FTP app will see I really am connected to wifi.
In tether mode, phone has 192.168.43.1, however the app doesn't recognize it as being connected since it's in tether, and not regularly connected to wifi, and will not start because it says Please connect to a network.
This is why I would like my Nexus 10 to host an infrastructure network.
Well sorry but I dont know how to help you with that sort of setup. or if it will even work. I highly doubt it will work since normally you MUST be on data to start a tether. This is because it configured your wifi radio for a different mode that allows others to connect. I dont think it is possible to have the same radio be configured in two separate ways at the same time.
WHy not just do what the majority of people do and get a dropbox for free and host the files there. Your tablet and phone will both be able to access it.

Look, you have no clue what you're talking about.
I know what I intend to do will work IF I could get my tablet to make a network in infrastructure mode. I do not want to hear about "better ways" to do it, you have no clue what my situation is.
You are really wrong on a lot of points [you do not need an actual data connection/plan to start a tether network, on pretty much any phone that supports it], you really don't know, I understand, but please stop saying "it can't be done," or just stop replying. Also I cannot just use dropbox because it would take a zillion years to upload 4GB movies. And when I'm traveling [like now] I do not always have wifi.
lol. Wow dude what a **** post. Here I am trying to help you and you be a complete ass about it my suggestion? I thought of soemthing that might work and was going to post it but since you feel like telling me to go **** myself then same to you buddy.
I think I am picking up what you are laying down.
You want to start a wireless network between your N10 and your phone without using a wireless router or access point device.
If you were trying this back in the old days you would simply use a ethernet cross over cable between two ethernet cards and set them to have the same subnet.
Can't say that I know how to do this though with wireless networking.

This is the type of thing Wifi Direct is supposed to be for. The Nexus 10 supports that, it's under the menu in wireless settings. Not sure if your phone does, of course.
Also, depending on AP settings, two devices (clients) on the same wireless network can communicate with each other. It's relayed through the AP, so it will be somewhat slower.

Still not clear as to what the problem is. Since both on 192.168 non-routable networks presumably they are sitting next to one another. Then who cares which device is the AP? One should be able to run ftp server and the other ftp client. Since he doesn't need data then it seems ftp is just to access one device from the over - no true tether for external data.

Here's what I did and it works to share files between phone and tablet without PC using ftp. Both devices running ES File Explorer. Droid Charge phone hotspot started - has IP address 192.168.43.1. Turn on ftp server within es file explorer on phone. Connect to phone from tablet over WiFi. Phone assigns tablet IP address - in this case 192.168.43.131. On the tablet open es file explorer and define the ftp server that is running on the phone. Once done perform the ftp connection from the tablet to the phone. You can then ftp between the two for as much as you want.
I am paying for phone tethering app on phone. The apps I see in the market seem to identify issues with JB or seem just too old to depend on. Regardless, if you just want to ftp between the two you do not need tethering. You need an app that will act as a hotspot managing devices, security and IP addresses. Another option is a cheap portable access point. Again, you keep focusing on ftp - not the internet. The ap creates a WiFi network that your phone and tablet can connect to - no different than a crossover cable between two wired Ethernet devices. As long as the both are on the same network you are good to go.
BTW - you may think you've perfectly explained what you are looking for answers to. You have not so you should not be too surprised at some of the answers.

I think I explained my FTP doesn't honor tether mode, it technically can access wlan0 to get ip to bind, just the dev didn't allow it.

Not sure if it's what your looking for, but how about http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ ?
When I tether my tablet to my phone (haven't tried other way around), it see's its WiFi as a normal WiFi, not as a mobile hotspot or anything. There's different device profiles to choose from, and I think a choice for either ad-hoc or infrastructure; and it's free
Instantly stream from phone to tablet? If that is all you need then the tablet does not need to function as AP - the phone can do it. All you need is the two units on the same network.
I'm done with this thread. Good luck.

That's the problem, my main router only gets about 150KB/s when I stream it both connected to that. I need a router in my room, and my phone has a tether mode that acts as a router [192.168.43.1, gives DHCP IPs, etc]. The only thing, the program I used ["FTP server"] doesn't recognize I have a 192.168 IP, because it sees the regular wifi is off [and tethering is on, which I solely use as a router, not internet].
I will look into the other file manager mentioned, it sounds like it might be able to do what I'm looking for. thanks

Yeah I did try this. It fails, the log says it failed to set SSID, and a couple other things that are mandatory in order for it to work. :S thanks

If all you want to do is stream movies and music, try searching Play store for a DLNA Media Server. A quick search on Google turned up many. You should be able to forget about what wireless router, IP, etc, - your phone/tablet should show up to the network as a DLNA Media Server.
The other solution with ES File Explorer will indeed work as a file access component. I use it at home to access movies on my home network.

Lost access to LAN resources

I'm running Android 5.0.1 (Goldeneye ROM), and have found that my access to some LAN resources has become limited. For example, I can no longer connect to any Windows/SMB shares which I was accessing fine a few days ago (using ES File Explorer). I also use the Onkyo Remote app to control my AV receiver, but now it cannot find the receiver on the network. I am also unable to connect to my Squeezebox server using the client app.
Using terminal emulator I can ping my router (192.168.1.1), but if I try to ping WIndows PCs or other devices on the LAN it just hangs. If I try to ping my AV receiver I get "destination host unreachable".
I have full internet access via wifi, but no access to any LAN resources it seems. A reboot hasn't helped. Any ideas for how I can diagnose this further?
Well I wouldn't say your phone was at fault, I had something similar and only re flashing the firmware on the router solved it. Router was old and cheap though.
The one thing I didn't try was rebooting the router...and now I have and....that solved it!
Thanks
So maybe "solved" wasn't the right choice of words....having successfully connected to the receiver earlier today I tried again this evening and got exactly the same problem - no access to any of my LAN resources. Having to reboot my router every time I use the Onkyo remote app is soon going to get pretty tiresome.
Any idea what might be causing this problem, and how I might prevent it happening?

A ****ty router is causing it. Other then that I don't have super powers to guess what type of router you are using

No idea then. You can try a different firmware on your phone / different modem, maybe that can make a difference. But you have just a bad router. No decent router would cause this behavior.

Some websites doesn't open in my nexus 6p Help

Hi guys
I just got my 6p 2 days ago and it's still without rooting or even a 3rd app and I have a really Sirius problem some websites doesn't open when I'm on my home WiFi but it's open without problems on mobile network .. on the other side my mate 7 open them over same network!
Please help me with that it's drive me crazy
Which sites? Do they open with a browser refresh?
no bro .. Simply I do Google search when I hit a link for some sites it doesn't open put its open over 3g or my mate 7 hotspots but not my WiFi at same time when I use my mate7 over the same WiFi it's open
I suppose it depends on the sites! Sounds like your router is blocking your phone from accessing the web. Did you sign in via the pin/password or use WPS? Some routers use a limited guest account for WPS.
I don't think it's caused by the router other ways how the other Mobile works with same router
I use simple password for my router 223456789 that's it
We have 6 devices over the same network all works good but not my Nexus 6p
Of course it could be the router. Each device uses a different IP address and has a unique Mac address. Each device can be given different permissions based on Mac address and/or login type.
Have you looked at your router settings? Have you tried forgetting the network and then signing in again? You need to try different things to remove possibilities.
First of all .. Thank you very much for your time and help
Yes bro I try everything .. Forgetting the network and restarting both the Mobile and router and my settings on the router it's the standard I believe no limitation settings has been done only the wifi key which I mentioned before
I can open Amazon phone arena .... etc
But I can't open some other sites
Do you think The DNS hase something to do such things opening some site and not opening some other I couldn't find the DNS settings in the Nexus even under developers options
