Hi guys. This is my first time posting but I've searched through the forums and can't seem to find much. Is it possible to have an auto flash mode for the camera? I know there's limitations with 1.6 but the X10 mini has this functionality and wondered if there's any way to import this? Apologies if this is a stupid question
It would have great to get this I dont know anything, but after rooting, may be it's possible??? Or the LED light on/off button on viewfinder? then we can be able to on/off led with single click without going in settings

ive had bad experience with the x10 camera app and i though i might have a faulty camera or something is screwed up but the problems are with the actual app, ive since started using vignette as my camera app, you can make it as default camera app, ifs got flash on/off/auto, different effects, and it doesnt compress the images as much it leave an 8mpx photo between 3.5mb - 8mb and thats actually the approx size it should be without loosing quality.
ill upload in a few min the pictures ive taken with the x10 using that app
best $3 ive spent on the android market.
S.E. should learn from its developers of how to make a camera app
the images are to big to upload here and i dont want to resize them so as not to loose quality of the originals so heres the link to view the images,

is late at night where im from (Australia) but ill take some outdoor pix tomorrow with both original camera app and the vignette one so you guys can all see the difference. so in about 12-14 hours ill upload comparison pictures
This app is pretty awesome. Funny that the developers could make the X10's flash work like, well, a flash. How the heck could SE not figure that one out?? It's now my default camera app. 4/5 and would be 5/5 if they could speed up the camera. This is my only beef with the camera on the X10. Takes too long to take the actually photo. My wife's iphone takes it instantly, and I must say that given the fact that it's only 3.2 mega pixels the quality of the photos is pretty darn good too. Must have something to do with the app itself.
Never the less Vignette is one of the best paid apps ive purchased to date.

I would say that I took various photos of different things to see what the difference was but I think its pretty clear to see. The images with Vignette were all poor focus. Needless to say I have uninstalled/refunded the app. I'll stick with the stock camera for the time being.

Where did you guys buy the X10 with a flash? I want that version! Mine only came with a photo light, which isn't designed to be used as a flash!
The Vignette app from the market gives you flash functionality over the photolight which is probably its most redeeming feature cos the photo quality was pants!
I've had some impressive results with Vignette - took some photo's of a document today using it and it was definitely sharper than with the stock cam..?!
Oh no, so what was I doing wrong?! Why were my pics so out of focus? The reason I sent those two in was that I even put the camera on the edge of the shelf to steady it to see if it was me with camera shake.
Don't say I've ditched a decent product cos I got the settings wrong!

Well one is in focus while the other is out of focus, that's not an app doing it.
How do you guys use the flash with vignette app? I have it on my phone but there's no option to turn it on!
Don't you have the "flash icon" on the screen - over on the right, 2nd from bottom when in landscape mode... ??..
And Suzed - Did you change any of the "JPEG file settings" - 2nd icon from the top on the right when in landscape mode... I think mine started on 2mp normal, I've changed it to 8.0mp superfine.
personally ive not have any problems with vignette,
set flash to auto,
8mpx, superfine.
one other thing i did was set in the options to touch screen to take photo, that way it does auto focus and only take photo when you hold it steady, so photos are in focus and great, check out photos ive taken

only thing is it takes some times for the photos to be processed and uses up a lot of resources, in my case adw launcher reloads when i exit the vignette app, but i dont mind as long as the pictures i take come out great
i have a question for everyone using Vignette.
In daylight is taking the same overexposed as the stock app?
With the stock app i have control over exposure compensation so, after lowering EV with a stop or two everything is fine but Vignette demo doesn't have exposure compensation support.
How is it in the full version?
Can somebody take 2 images one with Vignette and one with stock outside in daylight at max quality (8 Mp, superfine)?
I bought Camera FX sometime ago but is useless as it doesn't have any EV/ISO/etc. controls.
Ok, I went through the first 8 or 9 pages in the Focus section and never found a thread for this. So, I decided to make one. Pretty much every other phone I owned had a thread for this and it was fun to look at pictures people take to test out there camera.
In less than a full year I have went from an HTC PURE to a HTC MAGIC to a NEXUS ONE to a XPERIA X10 to a SAMSUNG GALAXY S CAPTIVATE and now to my lovely brand new SAMSUNG FOCUS....alot of phone switching I know. But im so happy with my Focus...I think WP7 is pretty damn awesome so far and its a great break from Android (which Im a little bored with).
One of the things I have been VERY impressed with in the Focus is the camera quality. So, hopefully we can keep this thread going and take pictures and post them for other people to see.
Ill start, I only have 1 pic to post for now, but Ill get more for sure. This shot was from work, just the first day after I got my phone so I was testing the camera.

I don't really remember exactly. I took a few and I was switching between macro and normal mode. I haven't had to change much in settings to get good pics on this phone. I have messed with macro, white balance most often. I have never used the antishake setting.
I think this camera is pretty good honestly.
My camera takes some great outdoor photos, but it seems to struggle with focus indoors. Anyone else notice that?
Speaking of indoor pictures:
Right before the start of Disney Princesses on Ice, taken with absolutely no skill or changes to any settings. Y'know, just to give an impression about what can be expected normally.
I have had issues with indoor focus a few times. I have also been able to get some really good indoor pictures. Unfortunately, I cannot share those pictures.
I will try to get some for this thread eventually. Here is another outdoor shot from my backyard. For this one, I used Macro mode.

Anyone try playing with the sharpness yet? its medium by default, Ive taken a few pictures with it set to max and they seem nicer.

As you can see, I had nothing else to do but take some pictures on the new phone. I rather enjoy it as my wall paper; its a friendly reminder to leave the house a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.
Note,
The when taking the picture, it also saved GPS info such as Altitude, latitude and longitude, nice touch.
Anti-shaking on, Wide Dynamic Range on, and sharpness set to high.

Hello, all.
I'm looking at getting a N3 and am currently using a N2. The camera of my smartphone has become an increasingly important feature now that I have kids, the main targets of my picture taking. I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old. As some of you know, toddlers move A LOT. I'm wondering if anyone can chime in on using the N3 camera for photos of kids and if not, just looking for opinions on the camera in general. If you previously used a N2, I'd be interested to hear how you think the two compare. Thanks!
I have a 6yr old and take pics of her all the time. The camera works perfectly and is much better than the Note 2 (which I also had). I think you will be pleased with it over all. You can also take video in 4K resolution. I did this at night (had some lighting) and turned out awesome. It's been a while since I've taken picks with my N2 (still have it) but the N3 can take pics at 13mp (13mp is not wide screen 9.6mp is though). I also have the gear and use it quit often to take those "quick moment" pics and it takes great photos as well.

Hi mlin, the pictures on this phone can be amazing. Having said that I gotta say that I enjoyed the camera on the note 2 a little better.
The reason being is the stabilization they use is not good for snapping a quick picture. So you have to turn that off and most of the time I go into sports mode to take a picture of my kid. So while the note 3 does take better overall pictures it is a lot of hassle to get the settings right. Plus for me the camera never stays on sports mode. But one bonus is the stabilization feature does take better night time shots on the note 3.

This is a little of what I was afraid of, I was reading that the picture to picture times were slower than the N2. Is the pic-to-pic time faster with stabilization off?
With stabilization off and in sports mode the camera reminded me of the note 2. I remember my note 2 snapped pictures quickly and in focus. The focus is not as good on the note 3.

That picture looks a lot better on my phone than the one I uploaded for some reason. I can zoom in way more and can even read the Hello Kitty name on her elbow pads

Personally the camera is the weakest part of an otherwise perfect phone.
I had an iPhone 5 before and felt that I was able to take better pictures all around with that phone.
That being said, this phone does take great pictures in well lit areas. Pictures and videos that I took while snowboarding look phenomenal [again, well lit areas].
However, I am one of THOSE people that share what I eat, and in turn take pictures of food [don't kill me] in low light areas. There are times when the camera works well, and others where I get flatter/grainier results.
I love the phone, and just wish that Samsung put in a larger sensor to capture more light. First world problems for me. Hoping that the camera gets beefed up in the Note 4,...which I will get without a second thought!

Was contemplating getting a droid maxx cuz I was so annoyed at this camera and wanted the nifty voice activation features...

Thanks, I ended up getting the N3 and so far have been really pretty happy with the camera. Having stabilization on really kills any opportunity to capture multiple pics in succession but I noticed with it off and in decent light, the pics still turn out pretty nice.

I did take a pic in a dark restaurant the other night and while the picture wasn't noisy or grainy, the lighting turned out really weird. I guess this camera isn't as dummy proof as say the camera in the iPhone, S3 or N2, but it certainly has potential to be really great. I've taken some amazingly clear pics with it so far.

My 2 year old daughter is by far the most difficult subject for pictures. So far I've been pretty happy with the pics of her that I've captured, and they're certainly as good or better than what I was able to get with my N2 but there is definitely room for improvement, I'll let you know if I find good reliable settings for capturing good pics of an active toddler.
Best bet is just to mess around with it and take pics in different lighting like you have and change settings to see what works best. Glad ya like it so far though. I've had mine since release and still think it's an awesome phone.

Brilliant photos! I think it's a brilliant camera...I do think the colour is slightly flushed out in some of the 'nature' shots...more vibrant on the S6 camera...but when you consider ALL phones features, the G4 craps on the S6 overall.

Best option is to shoot in DNG and edit those images in a program like Photoshop or Lightroom. A standard DNG file will look like **** untill you play around with the settings, you will get great contrast, colours
I'm planning to go to Japan in October. I'm a photography noob, any tip for me for taking quick quality pictures? Will probably do a lot of urban, nature and landscape photos.

I wish something like snapseed could open DNGs.. I like to be able to do everything on my phone. I know you can get Light Room but I don't wanna pay $10 a month subscription really.. are there any other options?

Thanks! I agree sometimes they are a bit over saturated when shot in JPEG. DNG is much more natural but they require a bit more work to edit!

What are your major uses for snapseed ? i can see it was used for cropping, adding filters here & there. anything else.

Spot on...the only issue there is, I dpn't think we have Adobe Lightroom for Andriod yet, lol...and it can take a few minutes of mucking around if you are meticulous with bright, deep contrasting colours...the S6 does this better than the G4, but as you have said, shootingin RAW/DNG format allows you countless possibilities if you have the program and are prepared to learn and/or spend time in Lr fixing it up.

I would use manual mode and set the shutter speed to as fast as possible. Or use auto mode with fast shutter to capture multiple shots.. you'll have to do some experimentation

Holy crap, they do too! I must admit to never having checked...I'll have more fun with mobile photography now...although with my own personal images I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and go by my MUCH larger UHD monitor on 'how good something looks'.

Thanks! It wasn't intentional.. I Just cropped it until I thought it looked good!
I use it for pulling out some of the shadows with the "Ambience" control. I also like to bring out some details and sharpness depending on the image. I have used it to add blur and do some spot repairing in some images as well as use the brush to increase/reduce saturation in specific areas. I like the fact you can edit your history and even mask out areas of a certain effect, very useful!

The one thing i've always wanted was a levels correction but i've not seen any app on mobile that does it as reliably or as simply as on the pc.
Not auto, just let me set markers with a histogram.

No matter what I do I can't seem to get a clear picture. Everything is blurry. I can't figure out if my expectations are just too high.....I came from an LG G4 but still. How are you guys getting good pictures? I'm talking 5% of the pictures I take are passable. Maybe I have a faulty camera? Anyone else find the camera to be garbage? I've looked through the camera threads and people seem happy overall. It can't just be me.

I tried Open Camera and am using Google camera currently. And I'm no Ansel Adams but I takes lot of pictures and have always been able to figure out how to take a decent shot on every device I've owned until this one.

They're blurry. That the thing, that's new to me. Good lighting with as steady a hand as I can muster still results in a blurry shot. I'll take one now and post if I can.

This is probably a stupid suggestion, but have you tried just wiping the lens and making sure it's clean and clear? Honestly I've had that problem before where it's been smudged without my noticing and it obviously makes every picture screwed up. I know it's not likely, but something that's worth a shot I've found! Other than that I know nothing about cameras and coming from an HTC One I know nothing of a quality photo...
No, I agree with @jiggyb21, I just bought the Moxo X and came from the Galaxy S6. The camera on the Moto seems like pure garbage to me, and I think it's because we are coming from phones with superior cameras. People who came from phones with worse cameras will obviously think the Moto X camera is great right?
I don't have the steadiest of hands, but I haven't run into a problem like what you are describing. Have you given some thought that you might have a faulty device? It uses phase detection for focus, so if every picture is blurry you may have an issue with the actual camera module.
I've tried a few camera apps, and though pics come out good, man do I really have to keep a steady hand. Move it a hair and any text blurs. Why not lean it up against something to take your handling out of equation and voice command take pic and see what comes up.

It would be nice if you could post some samples. I'm not in love with the camera but I have consistently been able to snap photos that are good enough quickly
I don't even know if I uploaded the pics correctly and if not I'll fix it later while I'm watching the Giants beat on the Eagles. Something interesting happened while taking these pictures. I am in 100% optimal lighting conditions and these are basically the best 4 shots I could possibly get out of this camera. I asked around to the people here on the jobsite with me and everyone thought the pictures were just fine. Yes, they aren't blurry to the point of being unreadable by any means but they are quite blurry. I guess it could just be me but I would still argue it's not. Before anyone says anything about how this is just a smartphone and it's only a $400 smartphone at that and it's good enough, I know that and maybe people who haven't used a good smartphone camera don't know what they're missing. If that's the case, fine, and that's why I started this thread was to find out. My last 4 phones were Xperia ZL, Z2, Z3 and LG G4. We all know the G4 and S6, to name two, have incredible cameras and have OIS. The first 3 I named weren't and don't. They were all rated as average cameras and they don't have OIS. I have hundreds of pictures taken in similar conditions with the Sonys and they didn't suffer from blur. Like I said these 4 pictures were surprisingly good IMO. Most I take are MUCH more blurred and most of the pictures I take aren't in this perfect a light. So I'll have to post more pictures from my collection at home to really show off the bad ones.
If you zoom in a little on the pics its almost a 3D art poster kind of eye strain. Again, I'm not talking about level of detail, just the blurriness.
I think part of the pictures of blurry because of shallow depth of field due to lower aperture setting in the software algorithm. It seems the software is trying to compress too much noise. Although I have not personally used it, try the following link for the alternative camera and report back the results. Hope this works out for you:

Not really. I have a DSLR so that's my standard on PQ. In daylight, nothing should be blurry at 100% zoom on even a $200 phone. You don't need flagship to take a good photo at 1/125 second shutter speed. It's either defective camera unit or something is wrong with the setting. Just look at all the photos people have posted on this forum.

It's a f 2.0 lens. You gonna have blurriness around the edge of photo if you are taking it that close. It has nothing to do with OIS.

If you're in good light, this is arguably one of the best phone cameras out there. Your pictures should be nice and crisp. Try this: take your camera outside during the day and take a few shots of the horizon or something. Then post the pictures here and we'll tell you (hopefully) if you've got a faulty unit. It sounds like your phone is not performing as mine is. I'm even satisfied with some indoor shots with this camera. I have done professional photography, so I am well-versed in cameras (color, WB, ISO, exposure, f-stop, etc.).
Even from reading reviews and comparisons from the web and tech reviewers, this camera performs with, and sometimes beats the other current flagship models out there. I happen to agree with them. From reading this thread though, maybe your camera isn't the only one with this problem.
Anyway, try to post a couple of pictures up. A link to an external host like photobucket or something like that would probably be better than uploading straight to XDA, due to compression and size limits.

Those photos don't look that bad. What sort of blurriness are you talking about? The bokeh from taking close up pictures? Bokeh is a natural blurring effect you get from a larger aperature lens not being able to capture the entire depth of field. That's normal. The focused part of those pictures don't look blurry to me.
As an aside, any indoor shot will not be optimal lighting, unless you have a lighting kit or something to really brighten up the scene. Optimal lighting would be outside, and when the sun is not directly overhead. This is a very quick summation of optimal light, but you get the point.

Wow, thanks, that camera works great, I always enjoy having the face detection feature it makes focusing on faces much faster.

Thanks for your tip. After turning off NR in advanced setting, I tried a couple of indoor shots of some writings on my note book. Please excuse the terrible lighting and my bad handwriting, but it's very easy to tell which shot had the NR off. Yes the one with NR off has a dirtier background, but the pen strokes has much better contrast from the paper. That's probably one of the reasons why the default setting produces blurry photos.
Yea when taking photos of dogs in low light I only managed to have 1 or 2 come out bad and that was from me moving the phone. But then again I am used to shooting 50asa film freehand.
lack of optical image stabilization rearing it's ugly head.. who knows why the hell they couldn't use a sensor with it, but it's quite disappointing. but turning off nr helps a lot.. we need a dev to come in and work on a true camera mod for this phone only. I tried to get my bud xdabbeb to make a mod (as anyone who had the g2 knows his xcam mod was killer!) but he isn't planning on buying this phone. ugh.

Thank you and this is why I wanted feedback. I posted the pictures I did (close-up), because, to me, they were the most objectifiable shots I could take while at work. The text just isn't as clear as other shots I've taken with other phones. I called it optimal lighting because I was in a 6x6 room with three windows and a skylight on a sunny day with no direct sunlight. The lighting felt like the kind any decent camera would take advantage of. To me, that's optimal..but I understand that's a strong word and not scientific. The fact that it scores so highly in professional reviews is what has me frustrated. The only thing I can deduce is that a professional, lab environment is more controlled and repeatable than my layman's point and shoot approach. They must be using a tripod, right? This phone has everything else I want and I just want to like the camera. So believe me, I want to figure out how to enjoy the camera. I will take more shots tomorrow and post them and I hope you and others with knowledge will chime in. I just know that with the other smartphone cameras I mentioned earlier, 8 out of 10 shots were keepers and with this one it's more like 1 out of 10 and that's not jiving with everyone else. looking at the pictures, they seem just fine to me. the blurred part (glue) at the bottom of the bottle is just from it using a wide aperture. the images are not tack sharp but this is a cellphone camera and small dof. I dont see motion blur.
problem with auto cameras is that you dont know what priority it has. to use a wide aperture to get a decent shutter speed and not have to use high iso or the opposite.
for proper exposure you have to adjust and juggle the 3 parameters (iso/aperture/shutter) to get a proper image.
wish the phone had controls like the LG G4 which has aperture iso shutter WB and EC.
