[Q] steps/apps after rooting s5 g900f - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys im just a newbie in the android world and so with rooting.
Ive seen alot of benefits thats why i rooted my phone.
Anyways im a samsung s5 g900f user.. i rooted using towelroot and supersu..
Now since im just new to this im hell scared what to do or app i need to maximize this rooring...
They say.
1. Save or backup first..
Im really confuse what to use or app to use to back up what i need to.
Can you give me the best apps youre using to back up?
2. Freezing apps / puttings apps to sleep
Is there any difference? If ever which do you prefer?
What can you recommend or the apps youre using?
3. Software update.
theres a software update on my notification i believe its from samsung. Should i proceed with the update? If i proceed will my device still be rooted?
4. Root keeper.
i have read about this. Do i really need this ap?
I do apologize for being clueless on this, i just dont know where to go and ask.
Thanks in advance

It depends on what you want to backup.
- IMEI (EFS) backup: it's highly recommended. You can use any imei backup tool, or use 'IMEI Backup ★Samsung★' app.
- System backup (e.g. partitions backup): You can use Nandroid backup app.
- Apps backup: can use Titanium backup app.
- Data backup: you can use Mybackup pro app.
2. Freezing apps / puttings apps to sleep

Humm... I'm not too sure but it maybe the same, it depends on what context you are talking about.
You can use Greenify app.

It's up to you. But once you have rooted, you cannot OTA update, you can only update by downloading the stock firmware and flash via Odin. Use Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app > Menu > 'Firmware Browser' to find and download the correct stock firmware for your device. The root will be lost by updating, you have to root again.
4. Root keeper.
i have read about this. Do i really need this ap?

I'm not sure about Root keeper app, but I have tried the root keeper function in another app but it won't work.
You can give it a try.

lets say i want to install a custom rom.
What do i need to back up? What do I to use to back?

Backup your IMEI (use IMEI Backup app) + your apps (use Titanium backup ).

[Q] Want root, but need updates

Ok, so I got a new phone today from work, and I need to keep it as close to stock as possible. No problem there, as I like Samsung's UI and all. But in order to do proper backups and such I need root. Is it possible to get root, but still keep it stock? Or at least make sure I keep getting firmware updates?
Cheers!

How is the backup stored? Doesnt Samsung have some app for this? I think its called Easy Phone Sync.
Nah. The Samsung software has never really worked. That's why I need a proper backup program to get my sms and mms out...

how to remove unnecessary stock apk?

Hi everyone
Just got my samsung galaxy s4 from sprint. I love this phone and the capabilities of it. However there is tons and tonsbof application that I honestly never see need for like dropbox, etc. My phone is rootef with CWM recovery, it has the latest superus but I have not installed a rom since im planning to make my own rom sometime in the future. My main concer is whetger there is a zip I can instal that will remove some apps. Preferbably something that is not rom based. I like the stock look of the samsung. Id really appreciate it thanks.

Here ya go bro. Not a flashable zip, but you can chose what to remove and all those apps listed are "safe to remove" (hence the name!) lol.

If you're rooted, you can uninstall with TB. Remember to backup before you attempt to remove something and you might need it for something else to function. This is something I stumped on and I use to customize and remove apps which I do not use/need.

Zips as in apps? and games? look at the play store, plenty of free apps you can download and try out.
edit:
Unless you're refering to an app that will help you remove unwanted apps off your phone, try installing Titanium Backup.

[Q] Complete Root Noob

Hey all I have been lurking this thread for awhile and today I saw that we have finally been granted root access. Now I am going to be totally honest, I am a total NOOB and have no idea what i can do with a rooted phone.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to how i can uninstall bloat? And install fancy modifications???? I would greatly appreciate any help! Thank you!
For the bloat I use titanium backup. As for the fancy modifications I would look into xposed

You can PM me if you want. I'll give you some tips/etc. For starters make sure you are rooted and have the latest SuperSu installed. (Check the root thread for a newer version, dont think play store has been updated yet). And then I would recommend installing Titanium Backup (as stated above) and even buying the Pro version for $5, its worth it in the long run if you ask me. I';ve used it on the last 7 android phones ive owned. So it's well paid for itself. once your set there PM me and i'll give you some things to check out.
We may get Safestrap recovery at some point but that will only allow us to flash roms based on the stock kernel. We shall see.

Do yourself a favor and freeze the apps you don't want first, instead of uninstalling. Atleast if you freeze an app with titanium backup and it screws your phone you can just unfreeze it and be good to go.

[Q] Need Help Updating AT&T S.Galaxy 4 V. 4.2.2 Rooted to Newest Version AT&T

Hey guys,
I ran a search but I don't understand half the things people are writing. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me my options. In layman's terms, as I do not understand half the abbreviations and jargons here.
I rooted my phone over a year ago and really don't remember much about the process. I can't download important apps from Google Play anymore as they require newer versions than 4.2.2... So I'm stuck on this old version and need to update ASAP.
I have ONLY rooted the phone. I haven't done any mods or installed any ROMS. It's on stock AT&T Rom. (sometimes I wonder why I even bothered in the first place).
Can someone please point me in the right direction, I want a regular STOCK AT&T newest version, whether it stays rooted or not that's fine, but a newer version, KitKat preferably. What are my options? The simplest method would help me the most.
Things I really need backed up: My Text Messages, Voicemail, Call Logs, Whatsapp Messages etc. What is the best way to back that up? If I use Titanium Backup, and I don't have root after I update, Titanium Backup would be obsolete. So what would my other option?
Please help.
Much appreciated,
Are you sure you want to update from 4.2.2. You probably have the option to flash custom roms on your phone. There are many custom roms that that'll put 4.4.4 on your phone. Since you're rooted get terminal emulator from the play store. In it type
getprop ro.bootloader
If the last three characters are mdb or mdl you have a lot of options. I can help walk you through on how to get a custom rom on your phone.
You can update your firmware and bootloader to 4.4.4 too but you'll lose the option to flash most custom roms.

Thanks bud,
I got I337UCUAMF3
I'll be honest, I haven't really messed with any custom ROMS before. I just use the stock AT&T one. But I would like to upgrade to KitKat so my phone is faster and can download / upgrade the latest Apps. Lollipop isn't out for the AT&T Samsung S4 right?

No. My phone is rooted... Is it supposed to download to 4.4? And also couldn't there be issues with that?
I found this post. So I know this is ONE option: But I'll lose my Root. Which is fine if that's my only option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728462
As the OP says, I will lose ROOT. So my question would be, If I back up using Titanium Backup, how can I restore my backup if Titanium Backup works only on ROOT? This is very important.
@ jd1639 - He had mentioned there were several other options, so I will wait to hear them, and I can make a decision from there. Otherwise, I may have to fork out another $150 - $200 Bucks on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6. depending which suits my needs.
Many thanks for the replies!

You're on mf3 bootloader which doesn't really allow you to flash any roms anyway. You'd have to use safestrap.
What I'd do is flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll update you to 4.4 and the device should then ota update itself from there. You will lose root, you can root it again if you want. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

Thanks JD, do you know if this wipes my phone? In other words, does it factory reset my phone?
Yes Flash the NB1 Stock file as he said. But you are going to loose Root and any pictures etc. stored on phone memory, so copy them to your PC or SD card. I always like to take SD card out just in case when I flash just in case it may erase it. But after you flash NB1 Stock or the Stock Root it is like a phone and have to set it up. Then it should Update to 4.4.4 itself from the settings/ Software update. Good luck. Any problem let us now.
Ah cheers,
Last question: Do you recommend the First or second option?
I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Stock_Odin_tar
I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar
Just a bit confusing as why he would post two separate links? I'm interpreting the first cannot be rooted ever.
Thanks again to the both of you for helping with this.

It's possible to root even the 4.4.4. It just gets a little trickier to do it and you have to flash modules in Odin. In the general forum see "all things at&t....." by guut13

Yep I think you are correct. So if you want to root again use the Rootable to flash in Odin. Once you go from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat bootloaders are Locked for some .tar Same for Lollipop, they have not been able to root and unlock bootloader as yet. Just follow the steps and take your time and all will be good. Have done it several times on mine with Odin.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take the time and thank you both for the help. I finally updated today. After backing up all my data and making sure everything was safe to go. Bam! I did exactly as you suggested and had zero issues... I am now on 4.4.2
There were a couple hiccups along the way, but I figured them out without too much of a hassle.
Cheers again and best of luck to the both of you!

[Q] Best Rom for SGN3 SM-N9005?

Hello guys, I'd would like to ask which are the best roms for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 Android 5.0? I've upgraded to stock lollipop rom 3 months ago. Sooo, What is the best rom for my phone? Also, is there anyway to upgrade my phone without deleting my apps/files? Thanks!

You've been around XDA long enough to know 'best ROM' posts are not welcome...
Best way to update though is to be rooted and use a custom Recovery like TWRP to nandroid your phone. Then you can update and Restore only Data and have almost everything back.
I also use Call logs backup and restore and SMS backup and restore so i don't lose them and I export my contacts out to extSDCard so I don't lose them either.
Add in TiBu Pro with a backup of all user (and a few sysdtem) apps and I can restore ONLY apps and have a clean flash phone.

Different ROMs suit different needs. The Mods have said no ETA posts and no best ROM posts. Look around and try things out. Best advixce is make sure you read plenty FIRST. Go through the threads and see what issues people have etc. BEFORE you flash the ROM.
Alright, thanks!
