Android Gallery for SD Card Folders - Java for Android App Development

I found an Android Gallery on GitHub that was a Port from the Android Gallery. The App Works pretty good as is, but I would like to limit or remove the MediaScanner so I can specify a Folder on my SDCard to scan.
Is anyone willing to help me with this? I have Forked the Project... https://github.com/soboapps/gallery
I think a lot of people may find this useful if it can be done.
Thanks in advance!

[HELP] Sorting pictures on SD card

I've placed pictures on an SD card in media/pictures. Most are in sub-folders with only a handful with no designation just floating around in media/pictures. When I went into pictures to choose a wallpaper EVERYTHING is there. All out in the open. No groups. Even album pictures from my media/music folder.
What's going on? I'd just like to, from the home screen, hit menu > wallpaper > pictures and have them show up in groups so I can just go to my media/pictures/wallpaper folder.
How can I just add walls to the Wallpaper Gallery? What file explorer is good to get from the Market Place?
I've looked around but the answers are scattered and file explorers are mentioned but no one's said outright "yeah, use this one..."
rly? i mean rly!? come on now...
So much activity around the forums and no one knows what to do for sorting pics on an SD card or accessing the default location for wallpapers...

Hi, how is you VB. Coding?
I had the same issue and I just wrote a simple program to rename the .jpg’s in the date order I wanted.
I can post the code if you want? I think its possible to do it in VBA as well, but I found there was a lot more information relating to the .NET stuff
Thanks but I was really just looking for a recommended directory structure for the SD card and a way to get the gallery to NOT show album art for my music. I tried naming the folder .music but then the phone could not find the music!
Also, I have custom ringtones/mp3's used as ringtones on my SD which the phone loses after having mounted it to the pc?! I set a ringtone for a contact then at some point I mount the phone to USB and then I find on my contact that the ringtone is now "unknown." I tried copying the mp3's I most use as ringtones to the phone but I was told that it could not be done by AndExplorer...
Kinda sad at this point. :\

Hiding folders created by apps?

Hi guys,
I know this is an issue for many alike myself, I HATE how some android apps and the system automatically create folder on the SDcard (tmp, LOST.DIR, albumthumbs, adobe etc) and even worse have stupid names for some of them. Im quite the perfectionist so i really would like to have them gone (hidden) or at least renamed. As hiding them is the easier option I want to know if this is even possible?
I've tried mounting my SDcard and changing those files to hidden, but in Android they still display. I've tried the '.' method of hiding but this causes errors for some apps as the folders aren't being located correctly.
I've searched around with no solution as of yet so if anybody has a way please let us know.
no stupid comments about hiding your porn and **** please.
I hate to not be any help, but I would also like a way to do this.
I hate looking into my SD card and seeing a bunch of random sh!t.
so bump i guess
Even though it don't bother me i don't understand why developers don't do like linux apps and use /sdcard/.twidroid type of folder?
This drives me insane as well. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. This is on the developers of the apps to fix.
Does Google actually recommend a specific folder to put these files, something like .config or .cache like in Linux?
It would have been so easier if all these folder went inside a single folder like program files .. I m too frustated bocs these app folders
They recommend /Android/data/<package_name>/files/
see: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesExternal
One option is to override what the below two routines return. (AOSP code)
getExternalStorageDirectory() and
getExternalFilesDir()
i.e. set it to /sdcard/data/
ps: I remember asking this a year ago, still bugs me that nobody has done it yet.

quick search on the phone and net, i don't have this folder. But this is caching images (wow, i'm not really helping ) on your sd card. This might be in your settings, I'll have time to check soon, but I'd guess this is an app that maybe created this folder and started this cache process for you.
Deleting the contents of the folder should have no adverse affects.
Thanks for that
I appreciate the enthusiasm even if no help lol.
I know deleting it will not hurt - Just thinking its going to fill up again!
I have the same folder but only 9.9MB. As i saw some folders in this one, it looks like it is the folder where the thumbs for the preview of the Gallery are saved. Because there is a folder picasa-thumbs, local-video-thumbs, etc. No idea what happens if you delete them, but i guess it won´t hurt, because it will recreate the thumbs later.
how many pictures/video do you have? it's a weird bug
I have about 20 vids maybe 100 images...no more than I had on my i8910 hd2 or tp2, just seems to cache them ina strange way...i removed all files just waiting to see how long till it fills again!

On the Phone itself i have maybe 9 Photos from the camera now. But i have it synced with Picasa, so i see there about 140 Photos and i guess the thumbs are saved on the phone. So shouldn´t it be so big as the thread creator? Videos i have 5 complete DVD Videos (converted) on the external SD Card.

Odd gallery issue

My gallery app has a horrible tendency of creating folders that definitely don't exist on my internal memory.
I have at least 20 folders simply named things like:
1
10
11
12
15
18
This has been going on for a while now, but it's never REALLY bothered me until now. Any idea how to fix it?
This happens to me sometimes. I think they are thumbnails from the web or some other source.

I agree ^
One of your apps might be creating folders, to name a few examples Heroes of Sparta creates a folder with a new video. NFS downloads a whole bunch of music, Bestube downloads a lot of pictures (useless), etc. So it might not be the gallery but a third party app.
It's not any of my apps.
The pictures in that folder are pictures I've taken with my camera or downloaded from people who have texted them to me. They just appear as duplicates in the gallery, even though when I look at the files on the memory stick and phone, they only exist once in the Camera/Downloads folder.
Edit: Some of these pictures SHOULD be in my downloads folder because I saved them from an MMS but aren't.
I can't seem to find the folder they're actually stored IN, though...
You can try backing up the files you know you want to keep, format the internal sd through the phone, then restore your files. That should remove any dupes on your sd. You may want to do the same with the external sd as well.

That's a great idea, thanks!
Before I do that though, there are pictures that SHOULD be in the downloads folder, but are in those weird folders. However, I can't find those anywhere with any file managers. Any idea how to find those pictures and move them to the downloads folder?

That I don't have a clue, I'm ocd about my files, they get put where I need them as soon as they hit my phone. If you're seeing them in the gallery, they have to be stored somewhere, sorry I can't offer any advice on that part.

Question about Gallery showing unintended files

So when I open the gallery app it appears as if it's scanning all folders on my entire SD card and showing an images that lies in any folder or subfolder....? How do I stop this...? I only want it to show 'pictures' pictures that I take... Is there any way to select what folders gallery displays?
Isn't there like some kind of naming system you can use...
Oh here we go.

I know that would be a bit tedious... but that's the best I can think of for now.

Thanks for the tip. I know on a file level this can be done (this is *nix based so appending a . for hiding folders is common) however I was really looking for a more elegant solution... maybe something even built into settings or the gallery that I hadn't seen before that allows you to set which folders are your picture folders. The method of putting a . in front of the folder name means that many applications that NEED that data would also not be able to read it either. For example .mymusic where I would store music and by association album art which I would not want to show up in gallery. If music players didn't have the ability to scan hidden folders (many don't and why would they need that?) then I would not be able to use that music player. This seems a bit ridiculous to me seeing as Android is touted so much as the most advanced mobile OS in the world... something as basic as setting media type/folders/locations shouldn't be something that users should have to hack around to fix... It's a bit annoying to say the least. I have like 40 folders showing up in gallery consisting of album art, icons I've downloaded, other files I've downloaded for work that happen to contain images in them etc... That should not be showing up in my 'photo' gallery.
If there are any other suggestions I would really appreciate some more input on the best way to fix this.
IIRC you can put a .nomedia file in a folder to prevent the gallery from scanning files in that folder, but that might still run into the problem of interfering with other applications. Also, some applications seem to ignore the .nomedia request...

Second best thing I can think of is what developers have been doing since Android came out, probably.
Find(or make) a replacement app that does what the basic gallery can do, but with more bells and whistles. :silly:
I know there's a few out there. There's got to be one that does what you're saying. I have a few extra folders that display images... A few album covers, extracted winrars... But it's not as bad as it is for you.
Sorry I'm not too helpful, but I try to chime in where I can.
I just use Solid Explorer to put a .nomedia file in the folder. Gets all the images I've downloaded from Tapatalk out of my gallery.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I've resorted to just using the .nomedia file in all the folders. I realized recently though that this presents some unique challenges for music/audio/ringtones etc... however. oh well, can't get everything you want I guess. You would think that an OS as advanced as Android would have a better way of handling such a common occurrence....

Have you tried quickpic? There might be an option in there, not sure as I've never used it. It also doesn't integrate with the stock camera app well.

Have you thought about hiding in the pictures in a vault app? If it's only specific pictures you don't want shown, then you can just encrypt them and decrypt them when you want them again. It will hide those pictures from any apps that try to access them while they're encrypted
