[Fix][Mod] Microphone Hardware Mod - ONE General

This mod is designed to eliminate the in-call voice issues reported by some OPO users.
The common in-call complaints are:
-intermittent voice
-quite or whispering
The purpose of this mod is to increase vocal pick-up by the lower microphone. I know there are software mods to help with this issue, but these solutions may generate additional noise as it boosts the gain from the in-call voice mic.
The original microphone holes on the OPO are extremely small, which I believe reduces the vocal signals picked up by the mic. To increase the vocal transmission I have simply increased the hole size in the back cover to ~1/16 of an inch (1.6 mm) using a dremel engraving bit which I manually operated by hand. While I was at it, I also increased the hole size for the rear and top mics to allow for better noise cancellation.
Note: I separated the back cover from the phone before perform this mod.
Overall, callers on the other end experience much better voice quality without issue of cutting/stuttering or sounding distant.
As a word of caution, although this is a simple mod without much potential for damage, it may void your warranty.
Happy modding

Just for reference, for those outside the United States who are used to the metric system, 1/16 of an inch is roughly 1.6mm.
@whitewindhtc, perhaps you could add that info to your OP as the majority of the world uses metric.

If there any such thing as warranty than maybe it would be fine but we all know that doesn't exist in One Plus CS

I love hardware mods, Thanks man!

If what you're trying to say is that one plus doesn't care about people asking for warranty, I'd have to disagree. It took a bit over a month for the whole process but they definitely reply and replaced my phone for a brand new one. Of course, I may be one of the lucky ones, but I have had very little issue with them except their 2 to 4 days delay in replying. In their defense, they would have a warning stating how long they were estimating to reply that was never far off.

Hey guys before you try this hardware fix, would you mind trying this software one first? If this fixes the problem then I'll officially release it. I didn't increase the gain in any of the microphones so there shouldn't be any distortion.

Hello gents, i am having a problem with my mic, it won't work on google now, more important, it will not work on regular voice calls, only if i press speaker so everyone could hear my conversation it works. Can someone help me how to root the phone step by step and then apply the fix afterwards. I notice that in order to apply any fix the phone needs to be rooted and i am not very good at that, i don't want to brick the phone! thanks everyone in advance. i appreciate your help. Overall it's a great device, i loved it since day 1 i bought it.

Thank you, I was thinking about doing this, glad I am not the only one.

I wanted to give everyone an update on this fix. Although I opened up the main microphone hole I was still having voice issues when speaking to someone during a call. I've also tried some of the software fixes circulating around xda but they didn't seem to help the problem.
I then suspected that my mic was faulty so I confirmed it by tested the mic with a recording app, as shown in the YouTube video below. I ordered a replacement mic circuit from eBay and it has been working very well ever since.

Happy modding.
One plus QC must have been asleep when testing my phone.

Now about the hole, readying the first post I didn't actually believe it's an issue with the size of the hole and a few post below ..it's a mic issue(I can believe that) ..glad it's fixed

The build quality is very poor and everyone should resist purchasing until the quality improves. asus should also be reprimanded for locking the recent builds. Both of mine went back, they can deal with used junk.
XDA is also in bed with asus because if you say anything bad the offensive comments will flood and the post gets locked. Its okay for senior members to be offensive because they all give each other blow jobs during the day. Locking an account is fine because email addresses are everywhere.
Hope this wasnt offensive, i know the truth hurts you wankers.

LOL what are you talking about. The only build quality issues I have heard are light bleed and the audio being louder in one speaker than the other. The fact remains that they sell lots and lots of these things and have to make concessions. Overall I am very happy with the build quality of my transformer and dock seems very sturdy to me.
Locking boot loaders is not build quality and almost every MFG does it because if we brick a device under warranty we will more than likely just tell them it stopped working then they have to fix our mistake for free.
Insulting other members is not going to get you anywhere and it is obvious you have been banned before or got repremanded for being a DB in the past.

Its the same in every forum. Go to any forum for any device and there are plenty of problems to be found with all of them. To go into those forums simply to make your personal complaints and whine while insulting everyone for being satisfied with the product just makes you look ridiculous.
If you have a problem, take it up with ASUS and go buy another tablet or wait for something better to come out. No one wants to hear a child throwing a tantrum.

I love my piece of junk.
Well. The light bleed issues is true. I had to exchange my Asus Transformer three times (Best Buy) until I received one that had only a small amount of light bleed below the bottom bar. They need to correct this issue. Plus the Transformer back does flex more than any other tablet I played with. But, as far as functionality Its the best. A stronger back frame would be nice and etc. I am sure they will improve on the design with the transformer 2 (tegra 3). I have owned alot of Asus products (laptops and motherboards). All excellent products running for years.
Erusman
I have had my Transformer for a little over a month and for a piece of so called junk i am totally satisfied with it. I had a iPad but literally used it for a boat anchor. This tablet (Transformer) is a solidly built tablet and a pleasure to have.
the illuminati, who runs XDA is not going to be happy with this. they're gonna send out the cleaners to "fix" this...may jack bauer save your soul.
seriously though, just return it and go on your merry way...why be burdened with something so trivial?
also, it's illogical to generalize based on a sample of 1.

Have added his twitter feed in the 1st post
Nice. Hope it's crispier with loudness. Some apps can easily boost the volume while audio is distorted badly.
I believe SuperCurio anyway.
This should have been Samsung's job anyway. Shame on you Samsung!
Means i will have to turn my sound down .
jje
doubt higher volume levels will really improve the sound quality
personally i feel the s2 has enough volume headroom
its just the timbre is screwed up.sound needs more quality and cpu interference noise needs to be minimalised.(not audible wid cheap earphones but gets really irritating with my nuforce ne6 and friends tf10).
but then again guess something is better than no improvement at all.volume increase it is
a hearty thanx to supercurio and thanx to op for the heads-up
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
donations will be going to supercurio for this.
I hope this would solve the low volume on AOSP based roms
awesome!!!
Personally speaking my phone is loud enough as it is and ive no complaints but i understand some people might have some issues with their phones.
very interesting
Damn, you got to this one quick! I was just about to write up a thread for it. Well done
To those wondering, Supercurio has already stated that there's no distortion, unlike a lot of other so-called fixes (that really just rely on dodgy EQ-hacks). On average, you should see a 6dB+ volume increase.
Personally, I'm extremely excited to see how this stacks up against this, and also if they're related in how they achieve the volume increase (I know that the current fix uses the alsa_amixer file in /system/bin, but apparently it's not a very elegant solution, as it needs a service to constantly run in the background, and needs to push the command every ~300ms to maintain the boost).

I'm using that as its the only thing that works for me right now. It is pretty shabby, but afaik its the best for now.
It isn't very elegant, and the sound dips every time you change it (while its applied) and THEN the sound goes up, thus scaring you to death.

Do we REALLY appreciate it. ?

I just thought to myself.
How many people, actually appreciate how awesome this piece of hardware is, that they hold in their hand...... And yet the amount of moaning and whingeing that goes on on the web is ridiculous.
"Who wants an ir blaster in a phone.."
"This screen is a micron less thick..blah blah blah "
We should just sit back, relax and enjoy what we have now......
.....I'm guessing the marketing department wouldnt like that though...........

Ok !
Initially I was trying to ignore the battery life and how long it takes to charge haha..
But you can't deny, it's about the average. But when you consider the screen and how the phone works, you can't expect an extra day's worth out of nowhere..
If this and the S4 are considered the best options for smartphones right now and the S4 really does gets a few more standby hours, I would still go with the HTC One.
I was thinking about this after playing with a friends S4... yeah its a slick device but nothing on the market feels as good as the One.

Whilst typically I can't help but say every argument has 2 sides, and it's foolish to say the HTC One doesn't have any floors, the fact that this device and similar ones exist certainly deserves a moment of appreciation.
I remember when I was 11, and I spent a full week optimizing what at the time was a relatively well maintained machine and removing loads of crap, overclocking my CPU + graphics, disabling literally everything and eventually I had enough space to install the just-released GTA3 on my computer. The installation itself felt like it took around an hour. Even on the lowest graphics settings I managed just to get 15fps and boy did it make my computer run hot!
Now I have a HTC One. Just one of it's cores is capable of 5 times more processing power than my crappy little AMD Duron had. Today I installed GTA3 on it in a matter of minutes and was playing it maximum settings at a frame rate that made it smooth as butter. And to top it all off, I can control every remote controlled device in my house with it AND it fits in my pocket.
On a forum where people are inherently pointing out every little area for improvement to get the best from their devices, I agree with OP that we should all take a minute to sit back and reflect on the awesomeness of the technology we're all in possession of right now.
We're living in the future.
Hoverboards and holodecks can't be that far away now.

PhoneArena Review now out!

I haven't read it yet... http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z1-Review_id3427
The photos looks miles better than the photos GsmArena took. It's pretty obvious different Review units has different hw/sf tweaks in them
Sadly, the battery wasn't reviewed. Also, I would have liked to have seen some commentary on the phone's relatively low headphone's output power. I do enjoy my music and I'm concerned this won't be loud enough with my earphones plugged in. I'll definitely be checking out a device before I even seriously consider buying a Z1, but does anyone have any input on this matter?

The review just said power output. I mean, if it doesn't sound loud, just crank up the volume. I think the power thing relates to bass or treble. There's an option to increase those settings though.

Sorry, I guess I'm showing my ignorance? But I do know of at least one member here who is experiencing a lack of loudness, and I don't think it's the first time I've read that about the Z1
Surprised
Well, I'm a little agog,.... A good review of a Sony-made mobile phone from Phone Arena. Will wonders never cease?
Well, my handset has dropped by (review up shortly) and I have to say: pleasantly surprised by the camera - yes, the processing could be better in low light but the clarity in daylight, even on a dim and grey Yorkshire day, is actually pretty good. I'm thinking that has summat to do with the software update that I received within moments of booting it up.
ONE FLY IN THE OINTMENT,.... and it's big fella,.....
Sadly, much like GSM Arena, my camera lens appears to have an aberration - a fuzzy area to the left of centre where the focus is out. I don't have time to send it back for replacement before going way on a trip this week but it'll be heading back to O2 and onward to Sony as soon as I get back.
Dear Sony: Quality control,... you might want to look it up.

GSMarena uses a preproduction unit, not the actual retail unit. Look at their unboxing - doesn't have headsets.

as you can see it's still full of grain/over processing. no doubt that pictures look great when not viewed 1:1. What this translates to for the regular user is that some digital zoom/cropping of the 20mp image won't look so great. but when has it ever except on the 1020?

Screen seems good enough now, major problem is bezel and SIZE of device.

[MOD] Increase speaker volume :)

pretty simple mod, I hate how the ringtone and playback volume are not loud enough, so I changed it
MUST HAVE ROOT.
1.Navigate to /system/etc
2.look for mixer_gain.xml, open it up with some type of editors
3. change the value to 26 and 36 for playback speaker (max before running into too much distortion)
4. do the same for ringtone speaker, but I put 37, just a level higher than playback.
5.save the editor (root explorer will make a back up for you)
6.make sure the file correction are RW-R-R-- (I dont think it would changes but it doesnt hurt to check)
7. reboot
8. give me a thanks

you can experiment around with the value, but I wouldn't go above 37. also if anyone know the name to change for the in-call headset let me know
Pretty sure you have to be rooted for this mod. So this means that speaker and in ear speaker volume is again not loud enough... I had to increase it on every Samsung phone I have ever owned, starting with i8910 running on Symbian. Samsung please, wake up and increase the volume of the phone calls, this is ridiculous. It is a phone in a first place. To the Original poster, on my Note 4 I think I increased the "in ear" volume. I don't have Note 5 so I don't know what they call it now.

test it out and let me know :/ it wont screw up your phone, but dont increase too much or you might get distortion.
