So, I have a rooted S5 on NI2 and was going to follow the process to update to NK2 and then re-root. Step 1, take OTA to NK2 failed and I have no idea why. I tried it a second time even making sure that the update downloaded a second time in the event that it was corrupted...
anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I know this isn't a big update but just wanted to stay current. what it says in the Software Update screen is Update Failed, 402 for both attempts.
running Safestrap, Xposed and Wanam Xposed, Moto Tether, Network Monitored, No Lock Home, and Secure Settings. the phone reboots to the Droid and says installing system update and gets a little way across the bargraph and then just says error.

tried a different approach - there are a couple of threads out there on how to keep root while applying OTA updates. Instead of just going straight from NI2 rooted to OTA NK2 I followed the thread that had you first go back to NHA, do OTA, then Odin back to NCG, do root, come back to Odin NK2 and that worked in that it allowed me to do the OTA to NK2.
In the end, About Phone still shows NI2 even though I used the NK2 Odin file that I had just downloaded so I don't know if I'm really at NK2 or not...
{edited to add} went through this again and after going back to NHA and then taking the OTA I realized that the first OTA only went from NHA to NI2 and then I went in and checked for a software update again and it loaded OTA NK2. then I went back to NCG, did root, and Odin back to NK2 and now the phone shows NK2 in About Phone.

Followed all instructions to the T, and when I Odin'ed it back to NK2 (Step 7) and rebooted, WiFi no longer works and random apps force close.
Is there a different/better method for getting rooted once the phone is on the NK2 firmware, or should I just Odin it back to stock and live with it?
I'd appreciate the help. I'm coming from an S1, 3, and 4 which have had many many many ROMS on them without issue, so I'd like to think I know what I'm doing.
Also, if I do Odin a stock version, should I do NK2, or is there a more "Open" firmware better for rooting?

It sounds like you have your firmwares mixed up. Try to Odin back to the full stock NK2 and re-root or Odin back to NCG, root , safestrap and use the stock rooted ROM in my sig. Just make sure you follow the install instructions and use the NK2 firmware in the ROM post. As long as you are rooted and have safestrap you should be able to install the rooted NK2 ROM and then the firmware without having to flash the full stock tar. That would be the easiest way.
I got it back to stock NK2 firmware, Odin'd NCG kernel, TowelRooted, SuperSU and Busyboxed, Odin'd NK2 Kernel, runs like a champ. Now if I can just get my SD music to work correctly, I'll be all set! Thanks!
As the Title states I have been trying to flash to Lollipop using the thread Update to lollipop and keep root using Flashfire app. I have downloaded and followed the procedure (yes I am rooted and confirmed with RootBasic) with it failing.
What happens is I load the files in order stated per the guide hit the lightning bolt, does the reboot and then gives error no command and then sits at stock flash update where you can either reboot, flash file or few other choices. I have tried numerous times with each time same result. What is going wrong? As I stated on am on MK2 firmware with ATT update frozen so not sure why this is. When put in download mode I confirm Knox 0 and Offical software with it having 0x30 for bootloader. Any suggestions or should I ODIN update but with what?

We just discovered this morning on the Vz S4 that FF does not function properly on their MK2(4.2) firmware which is likely also the issue here. You will first need to update to KitKat using the following file then root with towel root before updating to 5.0: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358548937
Before I proceed to KitKat with file linked to is there a guide to properly performing this and then rooting? I will update from MK2 to NB 1 then I need to root, then do the FlashFire and Lollipop undate. I see the guide to use ODIN but then I will have to root I also have not used towel root either so any guide would be awesome. This should not change KNOX either correct (although I guess it does not matter since I am long out of warranty)?
I want to have a clear understanding of procedure so I don't brick the phone! I have not used ODIN before since I haven't really done much rooting other than when I first got the replacement phone last year
I'd suggest [GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap by guut13, and of course [How-To] Update to I337_OC3 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot (4/7/2015) by muniz_ri for rooted Lollipop. Look in the I337 General forum for both.

Ok I followed the guide and did update to stock nb1 and rooted, used towel root and then used flashfire to Lollipop and all seems to be working (I still am in process of setting phone up but it is running lollipop).
Since this is oc3 rooted is there anything else I have to do such as freeze att update? Anything else I should do right away?

Last night, I accidentally pressed OTA update button, so my phone got upgraded to NK7 from NK2.
When I had NK2, I followed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880 to have root on NK2 before.
Now I have NK7, lost root, still KitKat 4.4.4(not lollipop), but have no idea how to downgrade back to NK2 w/ root or keep NK7 w/ root.
So, my question is,
How do I get back to NK2 w/ root OR keep NK7 w/ root?
I don't want to lose my data on my phone.
Is there any way to do this without flashing it back to stock NK2?

Install towelroot and supersu first. Then, flash the NCG kernel. When you reboot, ignore the force closing apps and run towelroot. Then run supersu and let it install itself and disable knox. Reboot, flash NK7 kernel.
If you are using kitkat, please use safestrap and spare yourself the trouble.
Also on nk7. Really no desire to go to Lollipop just to enable wifi tether.
Is there a link to safe sources of the kernals needed?
I rooted my AT&T Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1 using kingroot and it worked great. I proceeded to try to install a custom ROM, which failed and I never even overwrote the stock ROM. So I am currently using the stock ROM. I recently got an update from AT&T for the stagefright patch, but every time I try to install the update, it puts the device into a secure boot download screen. I have to reboot the device to get back to Android. I also tried factory reset but it also causes the secure download screen to show up. I want to trade in to upgrade soon and I need to know how to fix this. Thanks!

After the flash, don't install or flash anything else, update with the OTA from AT&T. If you want to remove the custom padlock nag, use triangle away from play store.

i was able to take part one of the update which i think did something to Root....when I open SuperSU it says cant install binary, may need to re-root. I don't want root anymore. I tried second OTA update and fails.
I'm guessing i just have to odin flash a stock img?...my question is, can i do the lollipop one? or do i have to do kitkat and just take the OTA? also, does it matter which version of kitkat or lollipop?

download the latest stock rom from somewhere, and flash with odin or flashfire. That should be all you need to do.
thanks...just flashed one of the lollipops and worked great! didnt have to even kept data and custom went away!
