i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

If you dont change to an AOSP ROM, only change the launcher, you dont loose those features, right
The bulk of what you mention can be built in to custom ROMs

I was in CyanogenMod before ICS, now back to Samsung based ROM, but I replaced the bad AOSP apps, like phone and SMS with others from the market as nice or nicer than TW´s

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

Absolutely not true! CM is probably one of the most stable aosp roms. It will provide you (after some time passed for development) with superior performance, battery life and sometimes options like ui themes etc.
This is fact, not just user experience... but for everyone the roms they prefer the most. Personally looking forward to have dualboot and cm9 as primary rom...

Yeah, WTF happened? Just did the same. 160 dpi with the 213 dpi gui? No thanks.
the update has unified the tablet UI... look at the nexus 10 and you will see you are now running the "tablet' UI. there is no split in UI like there was before (ie. no tablet and phablet difference)
Of course there are changes in 160dpi. It's not the same as 213, Youtube is still totally different, market, gmail. Just navigation and notification bar are splited. But Yeah, old ui was much better. There is too much wasted space in new UI
Hopefully some custom ROMs will add this in. Its a shame, I used to be able to operate with almost one hand and now I need the other to use the notifications. Some things were added tipi the top right quick settings but I really want it on the bottom.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
That's exactly what I suspected, no tablet UI included. I am definitely won't update to this. Let's hope the community will fix that.
They're doing away with the old tablet UI to unify the devices.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
Yeah, and that is dumb as hell in my opinion!
i dont think it is necessarily dumb. i believe it is important to not have a split experience when it comes to your OS. If you want something different that is what custom ROMs are for. But for what google is putting out they want everyone to have a similar experience no matter what device they are on. that way going from your phone to a tablet is more natural
Using Tablet UI, I experienced accidentally pressing the Nav buttons and expanding the status bar while playing games. I think keeping the buttons away from where the fingers will accidentally press them is not dumb at all. I hope they find a better way to implement Tablet UI.
When I saw that the Nexus 10 had the new UI, I feared that this would happen.
Just flashed 4.2 and it was such a pity to discover that there's no tablet ui (( I liked it so much

Now we can have multiple user accounts on our Nexus 7... I'm wondering if it's possible to have one user running at 213 dpi and another at 160 dpi, so have different resolutions per user?
I read it's a change to the system build properties file in a thread about tablet UI, so I imagine it wouldn't be that hard for some savvy person to write a script to swap that at user logon, like in a .profile or similar, if android has those. I guess it must run as root, which is surely achievable on a rooted device... :fingers-crossed:
Key Lime Pie
Hopefully Google will figure something out for Key Lime Pie, unified UI is good for noobies but power users like us want something more and that's why we went with android.

UPDATE: Some dev may have finally achieved a TW tablet UI...a screenshot here. That is only a screenshot and I have not seen working myself. We'll just have to wait and rely on the dev to release it for those who want such feature on their note.
Can you share patched android.policy.jar and services.jar. I was trying to patch them with help from 0jmaster0, and but since you already did that I can use them and give it a try and report back with findings.

Nineteen downloads so far and no feedback. Although I don't know smali code, I have to research and learn a bit in a short span of time and based on my limited knowledge, there are two types of multiwindows: the one on the note1 & note2 and the one on note10.1 and the thing is all 3 devices share the same code but in that code is a conditional check to see if you are using a phone or a tablet based on the computation that barmulio specified in his thread (the check being done not only in windowmanager but also in multiwindowmanager), and when it detects that the device is a phablet/tablet (at least 600dp) the window manager sends signal to systemui to disable systembar which doesn't exist prior to 4.1.2. There could be a lot of other factors but so far that is what I discovered. I actually am enjoying this but it is a bit time consuming. It is a great learning process for me. Now if only molesarecoming can enlighten me about what makes ParanoidAndroid tick, then who knows what may come...I was hoping samsung would implement a PA-like configuration app/setting so we get to choose our preferred layout for multiwindow apps, then it would be awesome. I am sure samsung have more surprises to come based on the fragments of code and resources in its leaked JB ROM. So much time for a JB leak, I guess I'll just wait for the official release for now and enjoy the xmas season.

That is good news if they manage to make it work. But that I believe is running at 160 dpi which may pose a usability problem for a lot of users - one is the text maybe too small to be readable for most. That is the same problem in the Nexus 7 forum, they can get tablet UI by lowering the density at the expense of readability (imagine that on a 5.3" screen like note1, try downloading the screenshot and view it on your screen) unless connected to a bigger screen, so barmulio's solution was achieving tablet UI without lowering density making text as readable as the stock density setting. Another thing I noticed about the screenshot posted is that there is no button for the traybar which controls the multiwindow layout for tablet UI which is the thing that I am trying to achieve by enabling the systembar but so far no luck. But I have achieved a working tablet UI for most apps (Youtube, Photoshop Touch, File Manager HD and other apps if such app has a tablet layout) except without the systembar but without lowering the density so text is as readable as the stock density setting. If an app has tablet layout, it will appear as tablet app, otherwise it will appear as phablet or phone UI. If you want floating multiwindow or the stock multiwindow, then it is easy to switch between the two. I am using it right now and trying to iron out the few misplaced layouts of important stock apps (mostly I replaced with PlayStore alternatives) and making it a usable daily driver. I may release it in the near future with all the working apps. That is enough info for now, some folks might get the idea and beat me to it, he he! Just kidding, sharing is great.

people tend to forget you can increase font size if its to hard to read. With Xperiacle ideas on tablet gui on stock dpi the minute buttons area should be solved.
This is cutting edge stuff. I just hope it wont diminish batterylife like Paranoid mods do for me.

I used your systemUI awhileback to achieve the desired tablet ui in ICS.

I'm very happy running stock.

I came from the Gnex and AOKP is my favorite rom.
You will be pleasantly surprised with the Stock Rom. It has tons of AOKP features that you're gonna like. And honestly, running a custom rom, you'd lose most of those awesome features.
Check out this thread which is all the cool hidden features of the Stock Rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2454340
It will really get you excited.
The AOKP guys are starting to build for the G2. They actually said they liked lots of the stock features of the G2 and will be porting over lots of stuff into AOKP. I would recommend just rooting, flashing TWRP, and flash some of the Stock Mods:
List of Recommended Mods:
Uncluttered Status Bar icons (LG has a status bar icon for EVERYTHING like NFC, GPS, Location, Signal, 3G/4G indicator, etc... this hides most icons)
Solid Black Nav Bar / Medium Size (replaces the Pink Nav bar theme with Solid black like AOSP. Medium size shrinks the bar so it isn't so thick)
Change DPI to 400 (just using texDroider from the Play Store so you can utilize that big screen)
You can also install Xposed and use their modules to tweak further. This is good for stuff like "Center Clock", Transparent Status/Nav bars on alternate launchers, etc. Not really useful but fun to play with if you want to achieve a specific look.
So I would stick with Stock + Mods for now until the AOKP/CM team gets some stability and more stock-like features. Also the QuickNote feature in the Notification Shade is freakin' awesome. I use it ALL THE TIME.
If your intention as you stated here was for a best ROM

Played with ROM's on my N2, got the N4 on opening day and have been busy ever since.
Just now slowing down enough to consider playing. I've tried a few of the newer ROM's and they are great. Especially like the OBAR. However visually I would like something similar to the Alliance ROM. Something with lots of choices of pre-made themes as well as the ability of granular tweaks to the theme. Unfortunately while it does boot I am having too many issues with it and a majority of themes do not even have a preview. Nor do a lot of the settings seem to work. (Yes I did flash the color fix.)
I'm on 5.1.1 COK1 (well Alliance is 5.0.1 but I'm headed back to OBAR)
Give me a head start, is there any framework, app or ROM that I should start looking at?
What are your suggestions...
Thanks in advance

I was searching for this theming options too... i like to be stock but really liked the note 5 and htc theming apps and official theme stores. They are deep and change the whole phone personality..
Wondering if any here using or know best ways to use stock themes app for sprint note 4??

Thanks for the reply, I admit I haven't delved in deep to xposed but I thought it allowed you to tweak things. Wasn't aware there were full blown themes available in it. I'll have to check it out.

Yea i me either but it works well since Android 5.1 seems to be soo hard to theme.
xposed seem to be pretty stable but you will have to try out modules to your liking

well to give me these lil tweaks but you can do much more
the fan on the side is pie but the screen off gives me my crt off animation and more
