[Q] CynogenMod - Stops Speaker and Mic - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Please help, have recently moved to CM from Dirty Unicorn, really really happy with it except one major problem I am having. Without knowledge the speaker and mic stops working. I only find out when I receive or make a call and I can hear nothing and the caller can hear nothing. If I reboot all is fine but it then fails again. Not sure on the time span but is with in an hour.
Any ideas?
Have tried to log into the CM forum but I never get the email saying im allowed to post lol

Sure, no worries.
The temporary solution is to disable the Google ChekinService (as per in the thread).
Good luck!

Unable to turn on bluetooth sometimes?

I haven't seen anybody create a thread about this, but has anyone not been able to enable their bluetooth without rebooting their device? I'll hit the bluetooth toggle in the settings and it just shots off right away. I'm not exactly sure what's causing it but I'm hoping that it's just a software issue since I use A2DP to listen to music.
EDIT: I performed a Factory Reset, I'll let you guys know if this problem still occurs.

Yeah same here, had that a while ago.. it happened after I used bluetooth for a while then switched it off, and then when I tried switching it on again after about 10-15 mins it wouldnt switch on. Had to reboot before it worked again..
Hope there's a software fix soon!

Would you recommend a factory reset?
I've had this happen occasionally on my N4, have to reboot in order to enable BT again. I'm guessing a software bug to be fixed in a future update. I doubt a factory reset will cure the problem.
Had this happen yesterday. I figured it was the nfc tag getting triggered too many times in the car mount? Simple reboot fixed it though.

happens to me to. BT won't come on and need to reboot phone to fix issue.
i only use BT while driving as my music streams from the N4.
It's prob a software bug. i wonder if there's a service that we could kill that may get it to work again with rebooting.
Same here. Reboot fixes the issue for me.

First issue with my N4 I've experienced is this - happened just now and came looking to see if I was the only one. Normally I have alogcat installed, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Next time it happens I'll fire it up and see if there's any useful messages or not If I get any info from it I'll share it here.

factory reset = no netowkr or wifi

hi to anytone who is reading this.
here is how my issue started:
a week ago i rooted it
4 days ago my google play stopped working and would not steam any music( i didnt think anything off it just dragged and dropped my music onto my phone)
the next day google play store would not load and just said "no connection" and the re try button... i left it for a few hours and throught maybe its down ... the next morning i looked again and it wasnt up ... i noticed the signal bars and wifi bars was grey ... didnt know what it ment so i left it.
today, i rang gogole and they said do a factory reset... So i did.. grabbed a quick copy of all the files on there and hopped for the best.
it reset perfectly all datat wiped and everything... i tried to connect to wifi ... NO luck ... so i put my sim in and it wouldent read... restarted the phone .. still no wifi and no signal ....
what do i do?
i have the nexus 4 with a three simcard and my router is a bt home hub 3. 4.2.2 firmware
thanks in advance
luke
Start by re-flashing the factory images. If that doesn't fix it, you probably have a hardware problem.
can you please link me to a thread that explains how to do this safely???

That is incorrect.
Data issues can be radio related. By following my instructions he will flash both of these to stock which will help determine if the issue is hardware or software related.
Fixed it thanks to you guys. was just software so you guys are life savers!

idc what he does. the fact thay he also has wifi issues means radio is not a problem. it is very easy to say flash all stock. thing is to try solve the problem without fully installing the whole thing. that is why yours is not a "solution".

Are you running 4.2.2 with a non .48 radio? AKA did you enable LTE on 4.2.2?
i don't know and i don't think so, i was on PA 4.2.2 when i tried 0.47, 0.33, 0.27(?), i tried almost all modems, then i tried stock 4.2.1 (i bought my nexus 4 with 4.2.2), then i tried CM RC1 but never worked. I hope i can make it work without changing it. Thanks for the reply.

If you did all that then I guess it is a hardware issue.
First for the sake of trying give it a good shake ,cause the earpiece might have slipped for less than a mm.
If that doesn't help then you will have to either RMA or open the device and perform an earpiece exchange.

I bought the phone with Google's pure 4.2.2, tried also original 4.2.1. Same question as before? Is it possible that the problem will persist?
Its highly unlikely it's a hardware problem if you have audio with internet calling. As I said before, flash the full stock image including an wipe with fastboot.

RMA if you can before trying to change any hardware yourself, but this does sound like an earpiece problem
I'll try 4.2.2 stock. I'll keep you updated.
I had the same problem but it was fixed after I flashed the latest radio.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147194
Nothing worked (flashing/factory reset/downgrading) so I returned back the phone. The new one has no problem.
I had the same problem.. everything working fine in all apps except for normal calls. Even after resetting to stock Google image. After some digging I found the application Soundabout. It has an option to disable the check if a headphones has been inserted or not. After ticking the checkbox to disable the headphone check I could call again with the earpiece.
Funny thing tough, after reflasing my phone with CM 10.1 it still worked. Even on the stock Google image after re-enabling the headphones check I was able to make calls again with the earpiece. Really really strange problem.
You can find the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.woodslink.android.wiredheadphoneroutingfix&hl=nl
Altough you already replaced your phone it might be usefull for other people with the same problem.

Hating my S3 lately

So I've getting the no sound+drop signal problem these last weeks where you don't hear anything when making a call and then the phone loses all signal. Looked everywhere online no solution. I really need my phone these days and i am having to use skype to make a call which is total crap. Then today all of the sudden the phone stops recognizing the sdcard out of the blue, also can't seem to find any solution online. I don't want to send the thing to repair because I use it a ton. This is really inconvenient.
Just venting here , sigh.....

Which problem you mean, the call issue or the micro sdcard issue? I am running stock 4.1.2 jb and i have orange. The worst is that these problems start on their own all of the sudden with no previous warning. It drives one insane because it's so hard to pinpoint what happened and how to fix it.

Sorry.. The calling issue. I would make a call and it wouldn't make a dial or ringing tone and there was no sound coming from the speaker. This isn't happening on my S3. It was was happening on my old LG phone.. it was running stock 2.3 gingerbread of course, but it was surely mind boggling.

I am sorry but I read the rules and didn't see anything that said that no venting was allowed here, this is a general forum and in most forums general means general chat, venting included, or anything else that doesn't fit in more specific boards. Now regarding your question I didn't do wiping nor factory reset but I did reinstall the Jelly bean ROM I am using, and also I tried reinstalling the modem making sure it was the right one. I didn't do more because I've read in the big "no sound during calls" thread that those methods haven't solved most users' issues so far so seems like a waste of time. Anyway spending my time fixing the phone is my idea of a good time. I've had it for one year btw.

Yeah usually only when a metal case is used does it ever really interfere I suppose.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Possible problems:
1) Wrong modem. Flash one that worked previously.
2) Mobile phone network problems (we tend to overlook this a lot). Contact your carrier and ask if your networks keep going down.
3) Signal interference (maybe some casing, maybe something in your house)
4) Damaged phone (maybe the signal receiver got damaged in a fall)
I've been having similar signal drop issues. Phone shows 2 bars but no data use, no sound when trying to ring out, can't receive a call. If I toggle 2g, signal will spring back to life and data will show. Changed bloody everything trying to resolve it. Orange UK.

Low Frequency Beep During Calls

Is anyone else having any issues with the speaker when they are making calls on there S5? Whenever I'm talking with someone on the phone every 4 or 5 seconds I hear a low frequency beep the lasts about 1.5-2 seconds and then it goes away... After another 4 or 5 seconds it does it again. I really hope it's a software issue as I don't want to send my new phone in for a repair already.

Well if you are not rooted go into settings then backup and reset and then collect diagnostics and uncheck it and this theoretically turns it off, now if you are rooted you can install root explorer open it up make sure that you are mounted as rw then search the root directory for carrier iq and delete it this removes it from the device.

Sorry.. but what exactly do you mean by "disable carrier iq"? Cause I'm a real newbie when it comes to doing administrative stuff to your phone...
I also thought that it maybe could be worth Factory reseting your phone? But I've got a lot of settings and stuff that I don't want to do again.. but if it's really needed I'll do it.

Well if you are not rooted go into settings then backup and reset and then collect diagnostics and uncheck it and this theoretically turns it off, now if you are rooted you can install root explorer open it up make sure that you are mounted as rw then search the root directory for carrier iq and delete it this removes it from the device.

I tried that. But I'm afraid it did not work.. The annoying sound is still active. But the weird thing is that sometimes and on some calls it's occures very often and being annoying as hell.. and then again it can be off for like another call that lasts 30min+.. I hope that it's the phones own speaker that's broken or something..
Haha I hope you're wrong.. I really hope it's related to carrier iq

Ok did you guys did you try tutning noise reduction off in call settings that also does some weird shizz so I usualy leave it off, try that and see what happens.

Yeah. I tried all of them regular settings. Minutebeep, noise reduction etc.. The sound kept going. But I also noticed that when I connected my headphones and talked trough them that there was no annoying sound.. so I guess it's something with the phones own speaker.
But I put the phone on service today after 11 days of usage... lol. Hope they'll fix it!
I don't hear the issue when I'm using bluetooth in my car either. That being said I'm pretty sure it's a issue with the speaker in the phone. Time to swap it out for another device!

So Undergrad.. are you really swapping it in for another phone? They actually gave me that option.. but I kind of said no.. I just wanted my phone to work 100%.. maybe it was a stupid choice..

Target is ordering me a new device and hopefully it resolves the issue. It certainly appears that the issue is with the speaker.
