I have a Verizon note 3 on Metropcs. I know I won't get OTA updates but what are the chances of me finding the updates online for download. I hear there was another update approved on 12/09. Does it make more sense to sell this phone and buy a t-mobile note 3 to use on metro? Would I have a better chance at getting updates? Should not bother with updating the phone? Don't ask how I got into this situation. It's a long story.

Everyone seems to have their own reason for the slow updates for the G930U and I'd like to chime in with mine. This is 100% speculation and I have no proof to back it up, so take it as such. In theory, the G930U should be updated faster as they have already had the OS updates compiled for the device and sent to the carriers for their individual updates. The carriers add all their bloat and remove features from the Samsung Vanilla update. The carriers have to do all their modifying before they release it, which can be time consuming. Since the OS is already complete before the carriers receive it for modifying, why does the Vanilla variant(G930U) take so long???
I believe firmware is the cause for the delays. The G930V firmware is designed to work great on Verizon, and Verizon doesn't care if it works well on T-Mobile, AT&T, or anyone else. The G930T is optimized for T-Mobile, and they don't care if it works well on Verizon or any others. However, the G930U is programmed to work on "ALL" carriers, so firmware has to work well across multiple carriers. I believe the delays in updates are from Samsung working out as many bugs across all the major carriers before releasing it.
I've come to this conclusion from being on U-firmware PEH, then PG9, and most recently PL2. I am on Verizon service and every update works much better than the last. I have heard the same thing from users on AT&T and T-Mobile. This could realistically be a cause for the slow updates, as they have to optimize the firmware to work across many services, whereas the carrier-specific variants are optimized to work on that one specific carrier.
Maybe I'm just being naive. Does anyone else see this as a viable reason for slower updates for the Vanilla device?
you have very good points and i think it could be, but what about the SM-G930F for example, this device is the international variant and is updated frequently across countries and carriers that use the same exact device. How can samsung update that device almost every month but the US unlocked one can only be updated quarterly? My speculation is that since the US had never had an unlocked samsung device, the US carriers didn't really like the idea of samsung selling an open device in their territory and so maybe they only way they would allow it was if samsung committed itself to quarterly updates for the unlocked S8 in the US. As you, i am also speculating but given the way US carriers work i don't think i may be wrong. i do know the carriers may want that the Unlocked version is optimized but i don't think that process takes months to do.
The 930F uses the Exynos processor, correct? If so, I'd suspect they have a lot more hurdles to jump on the G930U firmware with Qualcomm as another important party. The Exynos processor is made in house, so they don't need outside assistance.
Has anyone with an unlocked S8 (US) received the Oreo ota yet?
Ive always had Verizon branded Galaxy / Android phones in the past so I am not as familiar with the unlocked ota process. Do unlocked Galaxy phones typically receive ota updates last?
I have a Tmo device on U1(unlocked) firmware and haven't received the update yet. It's somewhat annoying that both Vzw and Tmo got oreo before the unlocked.

That is not the unlocked variant. If it is it has been flashed with SM-G950U firmware for MetroPCS. Your phone might be unlocked but the OP was asking about the SM-G950U1.

Why is unlocked variant last to get updates? No carrier bloat to update, so technically it should be first.

Unfortunately that's just how it's is, hence why Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have the official Oreo update including the exynos variant. As for unlocked variants they'll eventually get it, but you'll probably get Oreo root faster than your official update. Or if you're impatient just grab an Oreo beta and work with that.
My Verizon s8+ that I use my tmobile sim got it yesterday. It changed the Verizon boot logo to tmobile. No more Verizon bloatware.
They said the U1 beta testers would be the first to get it too and that didn't happen.
Who ultimately pushes the ota for unlocked phones? Is it the manufacturer (Samsung) or the carrier that you're using the phone on?
If it is the carrier, then I suppose it makes sense that they would prioritize their locked variants first.

Yes. It's taking a great deal of patience. Samsung seems to have appreciated our feedback as beta testers and then led us out to pasture and left is behind. I think I'm running a Jan 16 beta build and have been waiting...
What software version are you guys on? I am still on nougat 7.0. Are they going to push out 8.0 and skipping 7.1?

Here in the states, my SM-G950U updated to Oreo v8.0.0 from v7.0 yesterday afternoon (March 20). Samsung Experience v9.0, Build number is R16NW.G950USQU2CRB9.
Security patch level is 1 Feb, 2018.

I was told that the unlocked variant needs all US carriers to sign off on it before they can send it out.
I'm running beta Oreo for U1. Still no update. I wouldn't mind so much if the lockscreen didn't interfere with listening to music, the music gets slow, choppy, distorted sounds when the lock screen turns off my display. Can't listen to music in my car, it's so annoying. Wish they'd expedite the update like now. They basically jacked my radio with that bug. lol

no that's bull****. that defeats the entire purpose of getting an unlocked phone.
The unbranded and unlocked version must work with both GSM and CDMA networks. They also must work with the carriers features like, WiFi calling, call waiting, etc. If I understand this correctly, they will require some form of carriers' certifications. Therefore unlocked phones will face delays from both Samsung and the carriers. I made a mistake of not believing former owners and publications about slow updates when I bought my S8 from Samsung. I have since corrected my mistake and bought a Pixel 2. You'll have to adjust to a plain Jane Android but you must give up something to get the timely OS updates from Google.
I am now fully convinced that Samsung will never change and Samsung phone owners who are dissatisfied with the unlocked OS updates can buy phones other than Samsung. Sony seems to be serious with the US market with their new Xperia XZ2.Sony's OS is as close to plain Android and their updates are not bad. My 2-yr old Xperia X has been on Oreo 8.0 for awhile now. Essential can be a player too.
Do yourself a favor. Stay away from Samsung if your priority is timely OS update.
If they let Snapdragon Users unlock bootloaders this was not a problem. May they will let us do that or some one will find an exploit i mean, yo can unlock bootloader on china snapdragon s8. #IWillBuyMyGalaxyS10WithExynos

Well I hope this is true for Oreo, but I doubt. The 7.0 the unbranded fw for at&t doesn't even allow VoLTE or WiFi calling out of the box.
Not sure about ATT but Oreo works on those features from T-Mobile. By the way I failed to mention that I am on Oreo Beta in my unlocked S8 which I used with Tmo.
I use my Note 3 as a wifi only device around the house. It has been terrifically useful for years. I never got the last Verizon OS update because by then I had moved along to the Note 7 then landed on LGV20.
I still like using my v20 but some apps will no longer update (Fandango and others) because my os is too old. Android 5.0 is what I have now. N900VVRSEPL1 is my latest update.
Is there a way for me to install the most recent vzw os update without turning on the mobile data? Since this phone uses a different sized simm I can't just pop in the one from my v20 and even if I did turn on data I don't know if vzw is still pushing that update from years ago.
Is there still a way to root my phone to get Nougat update?
Suggest you go to the Verizon forum for Note 3 .
I've tried looking through the threads and I have seen some people getting updates and others saying they have not. Has AT&T officially released the Pie update for the SM-G950U? My partner's phone is stuck on Oreo [RF5(ATT)]. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with her phone or if the update just hasn't been pushed.

I know of several S8's that have gotten the ATT update but mine won't update, getting frustrated with ATT over this.

I'm on a SM-G892A (S8 Active At&t) and still on Oreo!!
go to a Ubreakifix store, they can update to pie.
