EDIT UPDATE 12/22/2014: Installing GLTOOLS found @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604723 resolved the graphical glitches I was getting on my Nook HD as well as increasing overall frame rate. Settings I used were: forced disable antialiasing, disable lower render resolution (if I turned this on, graphical glitches and artifacting will occur), downscale textures .5x, optimize GLSL shaders, use FPS counter and simple mapbuffer emulation. When I forced 16 bit rendering, Hearthstone would not launch properly.
EDIT UPDATE 12/16/2014: New Hearthstone android build '738707' does not appear to crash in the 30 min or so fiddling around in ranked and casual matches. Initial load time is slow but loads quicker after everything has been unpacked. Faster than the previous build anyway...Game is very playable now, lower the resolution if you want faster frame rate (has to be a resolution/dpi higher than or equal to a 6+'' screen). There are still graphical glitches with minion nameplates etc.
My experience with device and OS below. Anybody else have a different experience, namely one without a crash?
B&N Nook HD CM11 Snapshot M9 (Android 4.4.4). Location is USA. Sideloaded the .apk and obb data. Changed default resolution to 1280 x 800 @200 DPI to get a better framerate. Regardless of resolution(s), still crashes at match end for me.
First Time load is very slow. Afterwards, the loading is faster. Graphical glitches such as bar codes for where the minion nameplates are. Game appears playable up until when the victory/defeat screen shows up after a match the game crashes/closes requiring a re-load of assets/reconnection.
i also tried hearthstone on my nook hd+
i face the same things as you,
in favt im thinking about buying a new tab just for this game..^^
I also play on nook hd+, it's somewhat low fps, but it's perfectly playable and never crashed.

EDIT: wait, scratch that, turned on the fps counter and they disappeared. Wtf, lol.

Lol yes, I did everything as OP first and then got interested in what will happen if I turn fps counter off. Glitches came back! Wonder why does that make difference.

Hello. I.recently purchased Nova 2 from gameloft website for 4 euros. I honestly tried a cracked version before that. It didn't run well. I then purchased the game and it's exactly the same. The game often drops to what look to me 3 or 5 fps, very laggy in every situation. I tried with chainfire 3d but nothing changes. I am at the moment with latest cyanogen. I have read that people with desire HD run the game smooth so what problem do i have here?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
you should try a complete wipe + reinstalling..
I was on Cyanogenmod when i bought the game and had no problem.. i'm on Virtuous right now and still plays smoothly
Complete wipe of the Tom or the app? Before installing cyanogen i did the complete clean uninstall. After the cracked version i also disinstalled the app from the manage apps, and then deleted the directory of gameloft from SD card. Then i purchased the game, installed apk and downloaded all the new game data. Can you give more info?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
And did you buy it from gameloft wap website, gameloft full website or android market? Maybe it makes a difference.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
A compete wipe of the device and reinstall cyanogen. However you did it the first time so im clueless.
As for the .apk, i got it from the market but i dont think i really mather because all the cache files are downloaded from gameloft servers anyway
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I had the same issues when i first played the game with the normal version you get when you buy it for the DHD. This version is somehow buggy i think. For me the lags where most noticeable while there where enemies on the screen. Seemed to me like there is some texture or effects on the guys that causes the lags.
I then tried about every version out there and to my surprise the Xperia Play version worked best. You might wanna give that a try Its the oldest Android Nova 2 version, 1.0.0. But it runs super smooth on my device! Note: The resolution is slightly off in the menus but the gameplay is perfectly fine.
I am gonna try the experia play version. Any hints on how I can find it?
And also i made someone download the game from the market on an Acer iconia with Tegra. It runs not smoother than my phone and it's weird i think. I don't expect 60 fps but on my phone it's just impossible even to just look around.
So i am waiting on advice on how to run the xperia version! By the way i get 2200 points on quadrant benchmark so i guess CPU and video are ok.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Found it even before your post! I was sure that was the version i tried before buying but maybe it isn't....this one works flawless, only weird things are the menu which is cropped and the initial intro video which is smaller than the screen. In game graphics are the same, but it runs very very well. Nothing like the other one! Thanks!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I noticed that the picture becomes blurry and the framerate drops down. It is like the game uses some sort of dynamic resolution. The weird thing is that when the picture is sharp, the game is very smooth. As soon as the picture pixelates and blurs the frames go very very low, unplayable. I wonder what causes that. Gameloft said that no one reported problems on the desire HD so i have no idea.

Gameloft released NOVA2 v 1.0.3 for some HTC models ... the link is available from support...just email them.
or Google search for this version this even works in SGTAB2 7.0 ( unrooted ) ...however the movement control gets stuck at times, you may have to pause the game & resume to play.
On Android phones ( not Tablets ) with smaller screen size , I think this version will play much better.
I tried ChainFire3D on it, but it fails to load.
Happy Gaming!

Hi guys,
like many of you. i just received nexus 10 yesterday after some basic browsing, everything went fine.
now i want to try google earth to see how screen will perform. it was so laggy to the unusable.
then i tried some tablet made game (http://machinarium.net/), is also very slow.
please see youtube video 1 & video 2.
so is my unit defected? or this normal can anyone confirm please.
thank you in advance
Games running very badly
Overall Responsiveness?
On the first link, some people there are also experiencing some FPS issues, but a possible fix for that seems to be to Force GPU Acceleration. The second link has a reviewer mentioning dropped frames a lot, which might mean it could be a common experience. Forcing GPU Acceleration though might help.
i cannot find where the developer setting on my nex10 can you please tell me where?

Instead of knee jerking why don't you send an email to the developers to report the issue and find out when they're going to optimize their apps for Nexus 10.
If demanding games like NFS MW, Dead Trigger, MC 3, etc. run smoothly I don't how they can't optimize that child's game.
My games play just fine for ~10 minutes, and then start freezing. They start working again after a a small amount of time, but continue freezing. It makes me think it might have something to do with overheating, but the phone itself is barely warm. Does anyone else have this issue?
It's not that big of a deal, because I don't play games frequently, I'm just thinking that when I travel, I don't want to be having this issue with only being able to play games intermittently.
I first noticed it on SlimRom, thought it might have had something to do with the smaller pixel density that rom has, so I changed the lcd density to default, and the issue continued. I installed AOKP last night, and the issue is happening with that one as well.
I didn't have the stock rom on long enough to test it, but it would be nice to know that this is a phone issue and not a rom issue.
Right now I'm trying out the rest of the roms to see if any work for games for more than 10-15 minutes, but I would really appreciate some input from anyone.
EDIT
Issue occurs with Carbon and PAC roms as well.

not sure, but it could be a memory (RAM) issue. does the freezing happen with other apps, or just certain games?
I have not seen it happen in anything except games, but it only happens when I have the game open for 10+ minutes. I don't think I have ever had a single app open that long, but it doesn't seem to be a RAM issue to me. Once the freezing starts happening, it freezes a couple times a minute, and other apps work just fine, even with the game still running in the background. If I set it down, it won't freeze again for another few minutes, which is why it seems like GPU overheating to me. Once it gets hot, it freezes really frequently, then when given the chance to cool down it doesn't freeze again unless its been running a game for longer.
I just got it to freeze, hit the task killer button(said 380MB free) and went back into the game, and it froze again within 30 seconds.
I downloaded a CPU temp app, and the CPU is ~35C, and doesn't get much higher when the game starts freezing. Are there any apps that show GPU temp? I can't seem to find anything.

get a logcat and send it to the Dev of whatever ROM you're on.
I did, I ended up sending it to the SlimRoms crew, because Slim has been my go-to rom.
In other news, I used the Utility on the Dev page to flash back to stock 4.1.2, and have been playing a game for around 20 minutes with no issues, it seems like stock works fine. Good to know I dont have a malfunctioning device.
I'm gunna try some of the 4.1.2 roms and if they don't have the issue, I may just stick with one of those.
Thanks for your help.

I am finding some since starting to play some lately. They play fine on my other devices. Again, I could be expecting too much out of this device, but Galazer is a simple (though great) game. Monster Shooter 2 is a high res game wih a LOT going on and plays smooth on the Nook- until it crashed at same next level spot everytime.
Galazer Deluxe= Great Galaga clone. Graphics corrupt & ghost after first board. First board plays fine.
GTA Vice City = Starts and then locks device up forcing need to shut down with power button.
Monster Shooter 2 = Plays okay for first few levels and then crashes to Nook home screen.

I'm just wondering what the general consensus was regarding the speed, the "snappiness" if you wil, of our rooted devices? I'm running the "unofficial" build of Carbon Rom on my HD+ and I think it runs pretty well. Def not as fast as a dedicated tablet but for a glorified e-reader, its not too shabby either.
I do need to be proactive with my usage of the unit of course, but I'm sure most of us here are. What I mean by that is that I do make sure I have as little as possible in terms of startup items (daemons) and run the occasional "fix permissions" or "clear cache"...
I've never tried a different rom besides Carbon, it was the first one I tried and I liked it enough that I kept it. For those that have tried others, do any run faster or smoother then Carbon rom? How is the state of the latest builds of Cyanogen 10.1?
Performance is sporadic. It is like something is in semi sleep mode at random points and the device has to wake up to get going again (this does not happen while using apps). Touch response is fine and the awful stutter (due in part to the constant library syncing) that the stock rom has is gone.
In spite of the lag, still works great. I am running into games that do not work that do on my other three Android devices, but again- we are probably using this device beyond the scope of its intent. The 4470 is a capable chipset, but something that goes beyond the 1080p display bottlenecks the device.
Perhaps the low ram (about 250 is allocated to the gpu) and the 1080p combine to be an issue that occasionally chokes the device- hence the lag. The T700 has a Tegra 3 that also has issues, but the increased the clock for both chipset and gpu to help offset the chipset limitations with 1080p.
Both the 4470 and Tegra 3 work fine with most 1080p video media, but pushing data to that many pixels is a much heavier resource issue.
Honestly I'm struggling with this quite a bit. I have an iPad 3 which is amazingly snappy on everything I throw at it, but I really prefer Android to iOS (I recently switched my handset from an iPhone 5 to a Galaxy S4 also) and the form factor of the HD+. However, I'm getting really frustrated with the intermittent lag on the HD+ with every ROM I've tried. It would almost be better if it lagged all the time because at least then I'd give up on it, but when it's not lagging, it's really an enjoyable device. But then it just starts lagging all of a sudden and I either reboot or go grab the iPad.
I understand that this device is resource constrained on both memory and GPU, but that still doesn't explain to me why it performs so smoothly sometimes and then lags other times until I restart it. I still think that there's some kind of resource leak or other type of bug that causes it to degrade into a bad state over time and that, once identified, will allow this device to be closer to what we're all wanting! Of course, that's also probably hopeful thinking...
My point exactly. The only common issue is the intermittent lag. I also have issues where it will freeze for over a minute and sometimes needs to have the power button held down to shut down and restart.
Becoming more a love hate relationship. Frankly were it not for the lovely display, I would have already returned it. I have the lag and occasional freeze is issues, regardless if a few apps or a lot of apps on the device. There is something apparently funky going on that causes the bottlenecks and occasional freezes.
Added: So far, more love than hate As far as the display, that is why I got the device in the first place, so would have not bought it without it.
I was having to many reboots and lag issues with CM10.1. then I flashed tweaked carbon rom and haven't had any issues at all. I have only had this tablet for about 4 days. This is day 2 with tweaked carbon rom. Love this tablet.
I had a Nook HD that was nearly flawless on CM 10.1. Two weeks ago, once the fire sale was on, I bought this HD+. I'm running CM 10.1 on emmc. I haven't tried Carbon yet! I haven't seen a lag issue but I do get the occasional soft reboot. I use my HD+ mainly for reading, and some light games. The HD is a little smoother, but I like the HD+'s size better. Besides, the display is great for reading. It is fast enough for what I use it for. The HD+ is an amazing deal for the price now. If speed was my ultimate concern, I'd be checking out that new Nexus 7.

I don't have an issue with lag myself. An occasional stutter if I have been using a CPU and memory intensive game and then switch to something else but that is it. Try Carbon it is pretty smooth.

Maybe android 4.3 will improve nook speeds with trim support. But I don't know if it just applies to nexus devices...

When I first started with my nook hd plus, the tablet was reasonably fast and had little lag. Now after 3-4 weeks it seems to be slowing down and lagging. I'm running the 7/19 cm 10.1 rom. Maybe a newer rom will help out. I haven't tried any other roms.

You guys might want to try lagfix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix
I ran it and my nook seems to be a bit snappier.
When comparing benchmarks using Androbench https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andromeda.androbench2 before and after it showed slightly better results too so it definitely does something.
This does the same thing as 4.3 when it comes to TRIM so its a good test to see what we can expect.

I can attest that this makes a BIG difference! I'd actually stopped using some apps because they now lagged so badly, Flipboard being a key example, but also Chrome (I'd gone back to the original Browser app). Immediately after having this run an fstrim, both of those apps are smooth again! I went ahead and bought the full version for $0.99 so that I can schedule this to run at 3AM every morning. As snargledorf mentions, this will be part of 4.3 so, assuming we do end up with a 4.3 ROM for the HD+, I'll be able to uninstall this app, but in the interim it seems to make a fairly significant difference along with some of the other tweaks I've picked up from the forums (disable zRam completely being a key one, perhaps also limiting the number of running apps to three).
Thanks much for the tip!

I downloaded this zram settings. How are you configuring it? If it makes the Nook HD+ better, I am all for it. So trying to follow some of the things you are doing.
Also I noticed that when I change the background process limit to 3, it changes back to standard limit when I reboot the tablet. Can I select the dont keep activities so it kills the app every time I close out?

I have zRam completely disabled. That definitely helped quite a bit. I haven't seen the background processes setting revert.

Ok, disabled the Zram. Do you need to do anything else with the program once you select that?

Funny, I just bought an iPad 3. With it jailbroken, it's pretty awesome and a lot of the tweaks feel native. I'm still holding onto my Nook HD+, though, for some kind of breakthrough that'll make it perform just as well as my Nexus 7.
Okay, here's how I have CM10.1 (8/1/13 build) on my HD+ configured now and I'm actually quite happy with the resulting experience:
LagFix – I set this to run automatically at 3AM every morning, and it has made the single biggest difference so far IMO.
Settings>Developer Options>Window Animation Scale/Transition Animation Scale/Animator Duration Scale – Either Off or .5x; I use .5x.
Settings>Performance>Processor>CPU Governor – Hotplug or interactive; I use hotplug. Make sure you check Set on boot.
Settings>Performance>I/O Scheduler>I/O Scheduler – Deadline or cfq; I use deadline. Again, make sure you check Set on boot.
Settings>Performance>Memory Management>zRam – Disabled.
Settings>Performance>16bit Transparency – Checked.
Settings>Performance>Surface Improvement – Fix color banding and blur effect.
I also set the LCD Density to 260 DPI since the screen’s physical density is 256 DPI. I use Build Prop Editor to change that setting and therefore have to change it every time I flash a new ROM. I've tried to put it into /data/local.prop and have it survive across flashes, but I haven’t yet had success doing so. Anyone have tips on how to do that successfully?
I'm curious to know if others are doing anything else to get an even better experience, and I'm also curious to know if these settings work well for others who are struggling with the lag issue.

To make the density in /data work, you need to use this command in local.prop:
qemu.sf.lcd_density=260
And the permissions on the local.prop file need to be set right. Make them the same as the build.prop file.

I have the same settings.
The one that made the major change is the Lagfix which transformed the general snappiness.
Though now i am worried by the warnings about potential bricking so am not doing it daily.
perhaps once a week.
Not at all sure if the other changes did anything.
Also what would be the advantage of changing lcd density (which I havent done)?
thank you for the suggestions in this thread. my Nook had become so slow as to be barely usable. I'll give these ideas a shot.
Tried Lagfix. Got my 1stCM stuck at bootanim. Scary. Luckily a 2nd boot worked...
