GPS won't lock on, takes forever - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Samsung S5's GPS is horrible. I have updated to the latest stock rom, odin back to stock 3 times, and still no luck. It takes for ever to lock on to GPS satellite. I compared my phone with my friends and my co-workers S5, we open the GPS Test app at the same time, his locks on instantly. Mine never locks, maybe in 3-5 minutes it finds 1 satellite that it locks onto. Is my phone faulty? Is there something I can do to fix this?

Where are you when you try to lock? Inside, outside, in a car? Any trees in the way? Tall buildings?

I can be outside, inside, or in the airplane. No matter where, it's the same. My friend's S5 same exact phone build etc and his locks on instantly anywhere.

I'd recommend contacting Verizon or Samsung. That does not sound normal.

There's videos on YouTube from xdadevelopers on how to easily fix the problem on a rooted phone or there's also apps in playstore like gps fix and other apps that will do it for you. It's worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet. Never had an issue with gps locking so i can't recommend any certain app. Let us know if you find something that works.

I have the same exact problem after I installed the stock rom again through Kies3 fo my SM-G900F, tried every single app out there that says it will fix my GPS but no luck..
Any solutions please? This is very annoying..

I'm not sure if maybe its the same problem/cause as it is with optimal rom but before you flash a rom make sure you get a lock on your GPS and make sure it shows up in your notification area and see if that fixes it

GPS after the update

I think I've updated my phone with something called Kies mini... I am trying to check my location with the gps but it aint even close to where I live!!!
Everyone talks about how satellites has their gps locked on to but I have no idea how to see that... with gps test.
HELP PLEASE! It has been always showing the same location doesnt matter which city I'm on! (before the update too)...
I think once I have tested this gps fix that was around, but then I went back to normal settings (i guess)... cause it didnt work
Now it it says that I have ECLAIR.UVJI6
I am new to all this
Search the market for an app called "GPS Test". It will show you all of the information you're looking for.
Well, I'm still having GPS difficulties with the newest update (Running Bionix 1.9).
ECLAIR.UVJI6 is the newest update, so don't worry about that.

I have GPS Test and GPS Status... The first one doest even move at all when I start the application and the second one on the bottom show it seems that is loading something forever. Where do I see the sats? Have no idea. From the second one I will guess that it could be that part that says "fix/sats" and right now is saying 0/2.
My goodness... The damn gps would so useful to stop loosing myself on the German streets
Nothing that I can do to fix it? Is there any news about if this is the last official fix for the gps?
My GPS was working great when I first odin JI6, now all of the sudden it just stop working, I try to odin it back to JI6 again and it still doesnt work so well.
I'm testing the GPS out right now. I've had the phone since wednesday, tried google maps and it's never been able to get my location. I just installed JI6 today and ran GPS test for the first time. I got 0 satellites for a couple of runs until my 3rd try where it eventually got up to 10.
Even though I get locks on GPS test, google maps/navi still can't pick up my location so it's useless =\
In my specific case, I found that the JI6 GPS update did not perform much better than the original version. Yes it was better, but certainly not as good as the JI2 update. So, I've applied the JI2 update and things seem to work much better.
Also, I've found that turning off wifi when making the initial GPS lock really helps reduce the amount of time needed to initially lock.
Good luck!
^ second that. Try to turn off wifi.

FYI - Ive had good luck changing to MS Based:

""In MS-Based mode, the network provides the satellite information to the device, based on a rough estimate of where the device is located, and the device acquires the GPS signals from the satellites and calculates its location. After the initial fix, the device operates like an autonomous GPS receiver, until the satellite information must be refreshed, at which time the device goes back to the network to update the satellite information. MS-Based mode is appropriate for applications that require the device location to be updated rapidly, such as a navigation application. Can the GPS work in autonomous mode? No, the GPS receiver requires the assistance of the network elements to acquire its initial location fix.""
i flashed bionix 1.9 and had more problems with gps than when i was running 1.5. atleast before it was sort of accurate... and found a couple sats after 2-3 minutes. but iwth 1.9... nothing and not even the correct side of the street (showed me east while i was way west). then i found someone who had a gps fix based on j12 and it was in zip so... i mounted that to me SD and reinstalled using clockwork recovery... now within seconds i get gps ... extremely accurate... AND... lock on to most of the satelites that are available. i love it!
Right, so here are my thoughts and experiences while using the new JI6 update:
1) Way more accurate than the previous couple of builds that I have tried. When the GPS does lock, it usually locks onto 10/12 birds and finds my location within 5-6 meters. Not bad! Definitely not as good as when I had GPS working via one of Eugene's Franken-Twiz ROMs (between 2-3 meters), but definitely good enough for daily navigation.
2) The fix for damn sure didn't fix any of the satellite aquisition problems that our phones have been experiencing. Typically for me it will aquire satellites right off the bat about 50% of the time. Other times I'm left waiting 20+ minutes for it to get a lock.
3) Solution I have found to get a quick fix. Type in *#3214789650# (for the new JI6 update) and delete the GPS Data cache. I think it's the last button on the list. After the cache is cleared, use the top button on the list to perform a location test. I've seen this take anywhere from 30 seconds up to 2 minutes... sometimes a bit longer if I am in an area with poor signal coverage. Once I have aquired a successful lock on multiple birds, I simply back out of the application and am good to go. If I leave GPS constantly on, I have found that my phone will maintain the lock almost indef. If I turn the feature off during the day to conserve battery life I have found that it will usually aquire a lock within 30 secs or so of me turning GPS back on IF I am still in the area where I turned the feature off. If I drive to an area an hour or so away from where I turned it off, I usually have to repeat the above process to get a quick fix.
I've tried every iteration of option combinations from the lbltest menu, and have mostly been greeted by similar results, with no one option particularly speeding up the process. Based off of this I am assuming the issue probably lies with the caching of stale data on our phones, and it's inability to purge this data on it's own.
The one thing I haven't tried yet is the JI2 fix mentioned above. I might give this a whirl and see how it works!
BTW, I'm an expat working in Europe, so this might also be the cause of my slow lock times... however every other GPS I own works magnificently over here.

That's the first "fix" for the gps? I tried once but it didnt work.
I have tried pretty much all the "fixes" I can think of and this is what I have found. No matter the source (root mods, Bionix, J12/J14/J15/J16-leaked and OTA), changing from 'standalone' to msbased helps tremendously. Also using the google server and port is much much better for faster locks and maintaining lock even if you are not in clear view of the sky (tree, buildings etc will affect you lock). I willl say the stock JFD with the msbased and google server and port was better than just about all the other ones I have tried with the stock standalone and spirint server.
IMO The OTA J16 is the fastest and most accurate (less than 10 feet everytime, less than 30sec fix everytime) that I have tried, but even that required me to use the google server and port, and also switch to msbased.

finds sats but won't lock on...
I'm still having GPS problems post-update. I've never installed any custom ROMs or any custom GPS fixes other than some tweaking in the LbsTestMode menus, which I have since reverted to the default.
In the LbsTest or the GPS Test app I get the same results: the phone always finds 10-12 satellites just fine (levels in the 20s) but it never locks onto my location. GPS Test will say "In View: 10" for 20 minutes but "In Use" always stays at 0.
Anybody have any ideas here? I was really hopeful that I'd finally have a functioning GPS after this update.

exact same issue. drive an hour away and the gps is hosed unless you clear it and start it again.

the thing is... mine worked in the states with the stock JFD without any problem. flawless.
it stopped working when i got overseas. and hasn't worked well since. It really seems like it ONLY works well in the states. I mean I can get it to work if I clear the data all the time, reset the phone all the time, but it's not supposed to work like that. It should just find me when i open maps like any sound person would expect from the device. can anyone contend? is anyone having flawless GPS functionality outside the US?

I've rebooted at least 5 or 6 times, as well as clearing the GPS cache ("Delete GPS Data" in LbsTestMode) numerous times as well. Still never gets a location lock despite seeing 10-11 satellites.

Brand new 10.12 i9000m has non working gps

so i got my replacement bell vibrant after it bricked from 2.2.. this new phones gps does not work. ive tried several times outside with clear sky and all it does it finds a few satellites then drops them, over and over, never getting a lock.
should i open it up and try that bending the gps antenna contact trick? to me it does sound like the antenna is at fault here. its like its getting a really weak signal or something.
any ideas?

thanks. that seems to have done the trick. after it reset everything i was able to get 5 meter accuracy fairly quickly. and can even sometimes get a lock indoors, altho only 15-20 meters, but still, thats better than my old one
any ideas if the gps icon just doesn't come on at all / not function when i click the gps shortcut and it goes green like it ought to be on?
think this is only since root and/or flash to speedmod kernel k13e
It happens also on my phone sometimes. I'm running rooted stock firmware KC1. Just go out from the app that needs the gps and go in again. It usually activates it. I get this problem only with google maps. I think it's google maps app bug...

gps is not working

I received my phone yesterday and gps did just fine. I drained the battery and left it off while charging.
Today my gps won't work, I can't seem to get a single fix anymore (google maps, gps test, mytracks, nothing). I don't know what to do to fix it.
Also my battery drains extremely fast (5 hours and it's dead). Screen acounts for 63%.
I am having similar problems.
mainly with the GPS. it won't get a lock onto the satellites.
very dissappointing.
other than that it's a great phone.
hope it gets fixed with a firmware update soon!
Factory reset first step .
jje
Same problem here.
GPS sees like 10 satellites but just won't lock.
Factory reset does NOT solve the problem. rooted - not rooted does not fix the problem.
Me too, see like 10 satlellites but cant get it lock TT
Just curious, are you guys rooted now? Have been rooted before?
What firmware are you all running? i am on XWKDD. today i upgraded to XWKE1 but didn't have to a chance to see if it fixes the GPS issue just yet.
Same problem here, sometimes I have 10 satellites but it just won't get a fix, no root here.
I get a fix within a few seconds of firing up the GPS, every time.
Even in my rucksack the GPS tracked me for an hour and a half, within a few metres accuracy, whilst cycling a few days ago, no problem.

I assume you're trying this outside without major obstructions around.
I would turn off: wifi, "Use wireless networks", and "Use sensor aiding". Run GPS Status. Under Settings > Tools > Manage A-GPS state, press Reset, then Download.
See if that helps.

I don't know anything more than the description it shows under Settings. I've seen theories that it uses the accelerometer, say for instance if you're driving through a tunnel. My experience is it makes my GPS accuracy worse rather than better, so I don't use it. But I'd suggest trying it both ways on the S2 to see if it makes a difference.
I went here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/
did a search on "sensor aiding" and got zero hits, so it seems Google doesn't want us to know what it is either.
usually over 50% of what people reporting that it isn't working is down to user error.
Have a look at this vid and do what this guy does on his SGS II. And see if it works for you

So, is that the new normal with your phone? Are locks working faster now, or do they typically take minutes? Is the accuracy ok?
It is odd that there are such differences between individual phones. If problems continue I would get it replaced if possible.

Having problems here too. tested today on the way to the supermarket, got a lock within a couple of minutes and worked fine for the duration of the journey. Didn't get a lock all the way back, GPS was definitely turned on, even stopped halfway home to reboot the phone and try again.
Just taken my wife's iPhone 4 outside which locked within 30 seconds, still can't get a lock at all with my GS2.
I've installed that GPS status application, but doesn't lock on to any satellites (at least not within two or three minutes anyway)
Not impressed

This thread, and posts like this, are what make me so frustrated with Samsung over the GPS issue. They never fixed the SGS, and now with their flagship top-of-the-heap phone they still can't get it consistently right. Even the best reports I've seen on the S2 don't match what some other phones are clearly capable of. It's hard to imagine Samsung is truly technically incapable of making GPS work, so I have to conclude it's just not worth the cost to them. They sold 14 million SGS's, with abysmal GPS, so they've apparently decided most don't care if it works well or not. They may be right, but for some of us it's one of the absolute key features. Very disappointing. Maybe HTC will get it right on the Sensation...

GPS stopped working well after Root & TopNTP

Hey everyone. I have and SM-N9005 on lollipop 5.0 build number LRX21V.N9005XXUGBOB6.
Now i rooted the phone and decided to see if I could get my gps to lock on faster with TopNTP app.
I think that after that my gps has had problems. It locks on really badly, or barely locks on to any satellites, doesn't know where i am with any precision.
When I use it for driving directions it doesn't follow me any more and only manages to update every 10 seconds or so catching up to where i am or even never managing to get a good position.
Now... What have I tried:
- Downloaded GPS Status, tried downloading AGPS data
- Reset TOPNTP to backup of original gps settings
- Reset through *#9009# of gps
- Even opened up the back of the phone to check that the cables were attached (they were) and lifted up the pins that attach the motherboard to the antennae just a little so that the connection would be stronger...
But nothing. It seems to get worse every day.
Is it something i f'd up with TopNTP? Is it the root? Is my hardware failing?
CAn anyone lend a hand?
Thanks in advance

Root has nothing to do with this. But whar it can help you to do. The other app most probably is the case. Try faster gps app. If it doesn't work, you may reset or try another stock or custom rom.
Use apps that are widely used just to be sure.
TOP Ntp is a pretty well known app. Nonetheless I factory reset my phone today and i tried the gps while driving. It finally got a gps lock. Further tests have to be done but it's looking good so far!

GPS is totally messed up. Please help.

Hi guys,
i play Ingress and the most important is a very good GPS. For weeks i try to fix the GPS on my Note3 and came to a point where i don't know what else to do then ask for help.
Sometimes it is working fine but usually not. In GPS Test App i can usually see up to 20 sats but most of the time i do not get a lock.
Around 2 weeks ago i even made a factory reset and wiped everything. Then i installed this image: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/rom-lp-tw-rom-t3027148
I found out i was still on a very old bootloader so i updated it to J6 and for some time i thought GPS was working better. I could walk through the streets and my position always moved correctly.
I moved 5 meter forward, position moved 5 meter forward. Had the location settings to GPS only and all was fine. Now i need to play with GPS+wifi+celltower and i am not moving around i am only jumping.
I move maybe 100 meter and my position jumps. Sometimes nothing happens at all and i need to wait very long or walk back. Sometimes i jump back even more, very frustrating.
I tryed to go to newer BL OK6 but after it did not work better i installed J6 again. But it is still the same. Only under very free sky i get a lock and can move around normal.
What is wrong with my system that it is not working correct?
Well GPS never worked for me right on this phone, I couldn't even get a lock indoors and sometimes even outdoors, did almost everything I could but only one thing worked for me, the app called TopNTP. Install it, with DEFAULT settings, reboot, go outside, get the first lock and then come inside and the lock will stay for 24 hours or so.
Now, this app is about getting you a lock almost all time, it probably isn't about accuracy, but you still give it a try, and see whether it is doing what you are asking or not.

This app will only change gps.conf settings. My problem must be something else.

Yes, that's a software, so that changes another software only, but it worked flawlessly for me. If you think yours is a hardware thing then no software is there to help you my friend.
I think it is software because sometimes it works fine. But it is not the gps.conf. Then i would never get a lock or only very slow. But my problems are different.
I even tryed TopNTP now but it did not improve anything. It is all still the same. Sometimes i get a lock but also i am walking nothing moves. Very sad...
Another 3 days of testing... GPS still very bad...
Does nobody has a tip for me what else i can try?
