[Q] Dictionary no longer suggesting previously used words - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a problem where my dictionary is no longer suggesting words that I've used previously (like the names of my sons). It's almost like it's stopped adding them. I can't find the custom dictionary file anywhere to check what it contains.
Anyone got any suggestions as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? I'm using the stock ROM with the default Samsung keyboard.

Try going into setting->language and input->keyboard and input methods->selecting your keyboard and checking the dictionary

Thank you but where's the dictionary option? The personalised data option is enabled in the Predictive test section of the Samsung keyboard (which is the one I'm using) but I can't see any option for checking or editing a dictionary!

Can you send me a screenshot I am currently on 5.0 and its a bit different.
It should be there somewhere just gotta play with the different options of keyboard or dictionaries.

I think I found a roundabout way of doing this which is totally illogical but works. I had to set it to learn words from messaging which seems to have fixed it but I rarely use messaging (if it's just referring to SMS which I believe it is!)

Seems weird to me haven't stumbled at this problem before

[Q] I have some questions about Android's Voice Input

I'm guessing this is an okay place to write this. Maybe there should be just an "Android General" area.
Anyway, I have two issues.
1. When I speak in a sentence for a text message, the first letter isn't capitalized. This annoys me as it is needless and shouldn't even happen with my "always capitalize a new sentence" function turned on.
2. In the voice input settings, I switched from US English to UK English, but it still puts down my words in American English where applicable. What is that about?
Bump? Also, can I report these issues to Google? Put them on the Google Code for Android? What can I do exactly? Are there solutions?
Uhh... help??
I don't really have a true answer to your question. But I just started using smart keyboard pro and when done talking it gives me a list of sentences to select based on what it thought u were trying to say. Basically saying that depending on keyboard used may determine if settings are handled properly. Try different keyboards

So is Voice handled by programs and not Android itself?
Voice is an external application that is referenced by many keyboards.
That being said, voice likely returns a simple string of text without capitalization, so that's what most keyboards are going to display. It probably won't help to switch keyboards unless they specifically account for the bug.
I think right now, you're pretty much out of luck unless someone has fixed it with a hack or a special keyboard.

Samsung's Email app - slow cursor, can't change what u typed.. bugs!

This one's somewhat hard to explain..
When typing an email in the Samsung's email app (NOT the gmail) I get these bugs:
- First of all, app itself is fast, typing is nice and fast, what u'd expect.
- When taping on the screen to change the cursor position - it takes about 1 second each time for it to actually respond and move cursor. Just an annoying lag for some reason. Happens all the time.
- Once I typed the text, say I want to change something - I tap somewhere in the text, wait for cursor to actually appear there, then I start typing/backspacing - cursor immediately jumps to the last character in the email. So I can't actually change anything I typed in - I have to backspace all the way to that place, change it, then retype everything from that point on. This problem is intermittent, but is incredibly stupid and frustrating as hell.
Anybody got these issues? Any idea what's causing these?
PS: Happened on VillainROM and on Cognition. Both with Nenph. and SpeedMod kernels.
It happens in all browsers i tried as well, with all keyboards i tried
Only happens in email app for me. Opera browser is fine..
I wonder if it has to do with the fact that email.apk is deodexed
I'm stock and use the e-mail app with Exchange. I haven't had any of the issues you described and I'm a pretty heavy e-mail user. I'm on KF3.
I have the problem too.
It hasn't mattered what ROM or Kernel combination I've run, it always plays silly buggers!
Exactly as you describe, once you begin to type in the body of the email, it becomes very difficult to edit what you've written without deleting it all (including the email signature).
The email app is the only place I have this problem, everywhere else is fine.
I'm sorry I can't give you any indication of how to remedy it, however I'll be keeping a close eye this!
I have this problem too but only with swype keyboard and only in the stock email app. I'm on the stock rom from the bell canadian gs2.
the way around it i've found.. click once on the word you want to edit, then hit the swype key and either choose from the list of words swype gives you or start typing.
its pretty damn annoying though.. i hope there is a proper fix

I don't even have swype installed, and I have this problem..
It must be something in the app itself, I think
Bump, if I may ..
Really looking for a solution to this problem =(
If you swype from the blue S directly to the right, you get a swype cursor pad up and can move the cursor much easier that way without having to delete everything u typed!

[Q] Foxhound 3.4 ROM on S4. Problems typing words with "ae". Turns up as æ

Hi guys. I'm new on this forum.
I've been trying out a number of different roms out there on my S4 until I found the one I like. FoxHound Diamond Dogs 3.4. With norwegian regional settings. Based on Android 4.3 I believe.
But I've discovered something weird while typing. Anywhere on the phone. While SMS messaging, typing URLs in the web browser, typing on facebook etc. The phone doesn't want me to type the letter combination "ae". Instead it replaces them with the letter "æ".
In norwegian we put an "-en" ending to a word sometimes. Pretty much like you in english would put a "the" in front of a word.
For example cola and colaen (the cola). My phone somehow interprets that as I want an "æ" letter. And it refuses to let me go back and correct it and it drives me nuts! Sofæn, colæn etc.
Is this some kind of feature in this ROM that can be deactivated somehow?
Some sort of typing assistant or something.
I installed the swiftkey keyboard to see if that fixed it but it didn't.
Any ideas?
Bump!
Bump!
I have the same problem! Using FoxHound 4.4, awesome rom, but the "ae" to "æ" is driving me crazy
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!

Already tried another keyboard app, but still the same?
Already Tried to check the keyboard setting? Uncheck automatically replace?

Yes. Swiftkey is installed, and the problem is still there. Also checked the settings, cannot find anything that would explain the replacement. Weird..

[Q] Predictive text is drunk, can I sober it up?

I've been using my S5 for a couple weeks, rooted on 4.4.4 NI2. Mostly I'm using the Samsung keyboard since I actually like the layout. Autocorrect has increasingly developed very strange tics which are extremely frustrating, especially since it doesn't let you backspace and correct the word (if you try that it'it'll just "correct" it over and over again, the only solution being to type another word after and then insert a space between them). For instance, one "word" which has spontaneously appeared in my predictive text is it'll'll. It seems to have particular trouble with words using an apostrophe.
Is there any way to root out this obnoxious behavior? When I refurbished my S3 and wound up on 4.4.2 I ended up disabling autocorrect because of similar issues.

You could try going to settings, application, Samsung keyboard and clearing data (maybe cache too if that doesn't work). I also saw where some people said they went to language and input, Samsung keyboard settings, unselected predictive text. Turned off their phone. Then went back and reselected it and it worked better. I like the google keyboard so I don't have these problems.

Well I tried the second option and we'll see how it goes. If that doesn't work I'll try the first option. I'm worried it'll unlearn some of the words I taught it, like "them", "form", and "easy". I heard it had a problem with 4 letter words but I didn't expect those to be among them!
Samsung Keyboard is unusable!
I tried clearing the data, the cache, resetting the predictive text. . . none of it worked. Samsung keyboard seems to have a tic when I use the apostrophe which causes it to insert text that repeats what I just typed. This is coupled with an insistence on "learning" every misspelling I make as the correct way to spell a word and then refusing to change it.
I deleted some stuff when I rooted my S5, more than was recommended in the thread. Maybe that's the problem? Because there's no way Samsung Keyboard could have a big this bad.
Maybe it's time to upgrade from the stock ROM to Eclipse, though I suppose it might not be any better because it's a keyboard problem. Trying different keyboards now.

Every android I have own has had this problem

I have own a Droid bionic, droid maxx, Note 3 and now the S7 edge. Every one of them the mmajority of the time type crazy when I type on browsers. Notice the double "m" in mmajority? That is an exampl. (that "e" mmissingis aanother example.) (That entire sentence is an example!)
I am just typing and hitting the word predictions at the top and it will add double letters, it will add double spaces ssometimes and and none other times, whenI use a period, it removes thelast letter of thelast word. (I am leavingthe mmistakesin so youcan see what it is doin).
I use SwiftKey but it also is hhappeningon thestock bbrowse. I havewiped the app data but it hhasn't helped. It happens on all bbrowsers, but it ddoesn't happen in any other app like texting.
Doesaanyone know what is causingthis and how to fix it? Like I sai, tthis has happenedon eeveryaandroidI haveowned. Itmakes me want topunch ssomeonein theface! Why has aandroidhad this pproblemfor the last 5 years!?
You might try with another fully configurable soft keyboard, for example Smart Keyboard Pro.
If it wasn't so serious (to you) it would be funny
It actually reads very funny when you type. Apologies.
The way of typing isn't related to what browser you're using, it's probably SwiftKey. Try some other keyboard or the standard keyboard, see if that solves your problem
Both the stock keyboard and sSwiftKey do it, I really don'tlike theoothers I have tried but I wwill ccheck them. Like I said, it does nothhappenat all in apps or text mmessagin. I think it has something to do with my auto correct built into the phone. I use to turn it off but now I ccan'tfind it. I can oonly find thesspecific kkeyboard setting. I have typed this wwithstock sSamsungkkeyboard so as yyou cansee, I ddon'ttthinkit is swiftkey.

isn't the stock keyboard made/produced by SwiftKey? have you tried the latest version of Google Keyboard or Chroma Keyboard?

I didn't know tha ! I will try one of thos . Thanks!
weird, i never had that issue
I wonder if you have this saved in your dictionary. Or turn off auto correct and auto spacing would prob solve your problem
I have this problem too and I use Google Keyboard. Its only when it corrects something or I input a suggestion and space. I've somehow learned and managed to deal with it.
So far using the Google keyboard it seems much better. It is just weird that I have had this problem with all 4 phones I have had over the years. And it has always only happened in the browser.
I've used swiftkey for a few years, and have none of those problems. If it has happened on all those phones, and multiple keyboards, I think it may have more to do with the way you're typing than the keyboard or phone you use.
