Stuttery N64 emulation w/Mupen64plus? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone here play N64 games on this Nexus 7 2012 tablet? I use a multi-system emulator called RetroArch which includes Mupen64Plus. Mupen runs good on my Note 3, but the Nexus 7 doesn't seem to like it too much. The amount of stuttering produced on this device makes these roms practically unplayable. I've toyed around with the audio/video settings in Retroarch, but nothing i do in there seems to fix the stutter

Games running slow

hi there, i have a rooted Samsung Galaxy 3 as most of you too.
here's the thing, i've rooted my phone, installed 3d chainfire and updated all of my drivers (of chainfire that is) installed setcpu and set it on perfromance base on 1300MHz. after that i thought to myself well a everything is done i can start downloading games now, i first downloaded PES 2011 and felt really excited when it booted and expected some good gaming and fun when traveling but when i started the game it was just horrid...the game is running approximately at 20% of it's usual game speed which kills it off entirely it feels like i'm playing the game with VSync enabled all the time.
So i was hoping if i could get some feedback from you guys to inform me what i did/am doing wrong or to give your impressions on the way things are shaping up for you.
thx in advance.
Hi
Did you tried different configurations specific to the game?
Did you installed plugins?
well, different games needs different configurations and each of them works good with a specific plugin.
Here is some examples:
For Nfs Shift you only need to select "Reduce texture quality and Qualcomm plugin.
For Modern Combat: Sandstorm you have to select both "Reduce texture quality" and "Reduce texture size" and choose Qualcomm plugin.
So the best way to play a lag free game is to try different settings.
Good Luck
trust me i've installed the plugins and have all 3 updated to the newest version i have tested all possible configurations and plugins even reducing texture and size settings still i can't get the game to run at more then 20-30% of it's potential...it's kinda sad as i saw that many of you are playing games smoothly on the SG3
Try using on of g3mod OC bus kernels.

em, could you please provide a link (with possible explanations) as i'm kinda new to this stuff, i got my SG3 a few months back and never had an android before.
this topic Must be very useful to you:
[How to]Play "HD" games on SG3 (NOVA, Shift, Asphalt5, AC, PES11 and more!)
PES 2011 working slow on every G3. You can't do anything with that but games like Nova, Nfs Shift and many others working great. You can try Psx emulator also, Fpse is the best I think and then you can play with psx games like Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, Civilization or Mortal Kombat.

So, overclocked processor even to 1300 Mhz doesn't provide performance in 3D games. (Neocore benchmark @ 667 Mhz - 13 FPS, Neocore benchmark @ 1200 Mhz - 14 FPS). Practically zero growth in performance of 3D.
Fpse emulator? The same situation. gran Turismo (time trial, only Your car on the track - 30-42 FPS - playable) Gran turismo (race, 6 cars - slow, not playable)
I5800 is not for games and emulation.
well, G3 is not good for 3D games, that's just how it is. There are awesome 2d games for android though. Refraction, rope cut, mx mayhem-a bit slow but fun and playable, angry birds all run fine. believe me if you had high end 3d games on g3 they would become boring in a week. better to just stick to your pc or console for real games

[Q] Which emulators work best on the nexus 7?

As a avid gamer and someone who was looking into a 7 inch tab and seeing as the nexus 7 is pretty close to best and cheapest i could find.Which emulators work best for the system?
As Im pretty sure the system has no problem running older stuff like snes or genesis i was wondering about Mame or Neogeo and even possibly n64 or PS.
pretty much looking to see which ones are in a playable state and who else likes to use their tabs for this
very excited being able to use my old ps3 controller with the system. Maybe even get a wiimote to use.
Most emulators i have tried on the nexus 7 run full speed. Info below
N64 via Mupen64 and N64oid
Full speed on most games. Some compatibility issues with some games, but this is not in relation to issues with speed
Mame via mame4droid and mame4droid reloaded
Have not tried the reloaded version (this supports more games but runs slower on some games due to more accurate emulation) Most games in the 1980-1992 era seem to run at full speed (silky smooth 60hz scrolling)
C64 via vice and anvicex64
This is based on Vice 2.3 which has more accurate c64 emulation. This would drive most intel atom single core based netbooks to a crawl but runs full speed on the nexus even with full screen, crt emulation and audio
Playstation (via fpse and epsxe)
full speed on most games (epsxe seems to have more accurate emulation)
Amiga (via uae4droid)
Full speed with audio
Have not tried genesis or snes, but i would guess these would be full speed
Overall a great device for the price
Loving Mame4Droid on the Nexus 7 it plays fantastic! I just need to find a compatible wireless game controller so I can have the device on charge while I play away lol.

[Q] THD/Tegra Games on Nexus 4?

I come from a Nexus 7, and just figured that anything that was THD or Tegra-optimized, would have the best graphics available, and would only run on Tegra hardware.
So with the Nexus 4 having better hardware then the 7, would it be able to run these THD/Tegra-optimized games? I would think the only thing that might stop a THD game from working on non-Tegra hardware is if it used some Nvidia-specific GL extension or something, but idk.
Some games I had in mind were DEAD TRIGGER (They have a Tegra version, and a normal version, but would the normal version be the only choice?), Fruit Ninja THD, and Shadowgun.
Tegra-specific apps won't work on non-tegra chips. That used to be amendable by using Chainfire 3D, but development on that has ceased
with Dead Trigger you can enable the tegra 3 water effects and stuff by modifying one of the game config files: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28264365&postcount=54
A little bump but i wanted to try arma but its tegra only...is there any way to bypass it?to actually play tha game?

Gameloft on Nook hd/+

Anyone tried Gamelofts big games ex nova 3 mc4 amazing spider man and games like real racing 3 nfs most wanted gta 3 vice city, do these games have smooth with the full graphics like on ios devices, since it does have powervr sgx 544? Would it be wise to buy this tablet solely for gaming? I know there is N7 but i heard/seen lots of gamelofts top games perform poorly on it due to optimization.

Most Gameloft games I have (have a number of them and I haven't tried installing them all, so going with 'most') give me the 'Device not compatible' error - both stock and cm. Also, Gameloft really pisses me off because they remove back-catalog games to force you to purchase the newer versions (like Asphalt 5, original Modern Combat & Dungeon Hunter, etc in case you have those).
GTA games run great. Haven't ever tried IOS, but they run full quality and 60fps smooth w/ the nook. Same w/ EA games, all work fine.
I have tried Nova 3, MW3, both GTAs, NFSMW and NBA 2013 and all play fairly smooth.
Asphalt 7 though plays, but not smooth. Seems a lazy port since NFSMW and the other "busy" games play smooth.

All I notice is the game is not smooth like my other device or the iPad 4. All graphics seem in tact, but uninstalled. If it was missing stuff, it would have been even less smooth with it.
Just so you know I tried order and chaos hoping it would look great, bit they have gimped the effects and draw distance and it looks rubbish...

Anybody try and playing with the build.prop so Gameloft's games install, and installing Chainfire3D to make them work?
Used to do this on my old Allwinner A10 tablet, and it worked for some games, but its been awhile.

Emulators running on Nexus 9

Many already know that this device will be very good to run different emulators with.
Everything from Dolphin to Drastic DS, Reicast, Mupen64 and many more. I'll focus a lot on Dolphin as thats the emulator that will get the best boost compared to the Tegra K1 32-bit.

Look forward to seeing them, since I won't be getting my own N9 at release. I don't really care about seeing anything but PPSSPP and Dolphin though, since the others are already fine on older hardware.
I hope that PPSSPP and Dolphin will work good
I think PPSSPP will run almost all games at full speed. But running dolphin at full speed will be much, much harder to achieve. Hopefully we will see at least 50% gain in fps compared to the shield tablet.
Not really interested in emus since I have a Wii U for that but I expect the N9 to run anything you throw at it

I have PPSSPP running Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions running fine on a FireTV and Galaxy Tab 2 tablet fine. I'm also playing around with a few Japanese visual novel imports. PPSSPP should not have any issues on the N9.
You need to remember that this tablet is rocking a QXGA (2048x1536) screen so it will be more heavy to play on it

That won't tax it harder on Dolphin per se, since it won't be rendering at that, i wouldn't expect it to run well except on 1xIR (the Dolphin native resolution).
The Nexus 9 certainly won't be able to manage "anything you can throw at it" though, since even the most high spec PC can't do that right now and maintain full speed on certain games in Dolphin. My i7 4790K with water cooking and overclock and GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 can't, and that's much more powerful than the K1.

That's the question we're all waiting to have answered!
So far the Nvidia Shield Tablet, by far, runs it the best and the expectation is that the K1 Denver should be a good step up from there as it nearly doubles CPU performance, which the emulator is more dependant on. I would expect many games to still run slow, but a good deal more titles should be playable (more easily emualted games like Timesplitters 2, which runs at about 40-45fps on my Shield tablet and might be fully playable on the Nexus 9).

OOOOoooooohhhhh sorry, my bad, I'm used to people on here knowing everything hahaha sorry
Dolphin only uses 2 cores, that means that dolphin is not taking advantage of the full power the shield tablet has. Nexus 9 is running a dual core k1, and the single core performance is up to 100% faster than the quad core k1. This should give us a big speed improvment in dolphin
I'm currently running DraStic on my Samsung Tab S 8.4, and it works PERFECTLY. Soooo smooth, best DS/3DS emulator out there. Looking forward to using it on the Nexus 9, with what the wider screen.
(PS. Got the emulator for Pokemon . you're never too old for that game )

You're right mate. Most of the games I play are older Pokemon games, from when I was a child or hacks based on those games.
Not sure if I find the huge screen preferable for GBC and GBA emulating, but I'm really looking forward to pushing that soc to the max
