Enable 5Ghz tethering in Lollipop - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use tethering on daily basis, it's a critical function for me in any rom. I have no alternative internet access at my workplace. All frequency channels of the 2.4Ghz band in my area are over saturated, and Bluetooth also uses 2.4Ghz, so on any channel of 2.4Ghz band I get very poor and unstable tethering connection. I recently switched to Lollipop as my daily driver and already put a lot of work into it, so I don't want to go back to KitKat. Native tethering in KitKat stock TW roms allows tethering on 5Ghz band and I'm looking for a way to enable it In Lollipop. I also could not find a single wifi tethering app in Play store, which supports 5Ghz. Any suggestions, such as build.prop or XML settings I could modify myself, without recompiling, which would enable 5Ghz tethering option, or a 3rd party app that can do that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Here is what I'm talking about: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-9061

May have to wait until the rom supports it. You are Relying on an obviously pre-beta rom as a daily driver, so finding something like this shouldn't be surprising.
I'm also doubtful 5GHz tethering would be high on teamasek's (or other CM12 developer's) list right now.

It's actually considered a beta rom, not a pre-beta, and according to CM team's latest blog post on the subject Lollipop nightlies should have been already available a couple of weeks ago. I agree with you that unfortunately 5Ghz tethering is not likely to be high on CM devs priorities list, and that is why I posted my question, asking if anybody knows a workaround how to enable it myself by manually changing some configuration, without recompiling.

Back to KK
I finally gave up and went back to KK TW rom. Hopefully in a few months CM team adds 5Ghz tethering feature.

Which rom for 5ghz?
Hi! Which rom you use?. In my stock rom there is no 5ghz option in hotspot?

Android Revolution HD 2.0.11 - Channel 13 wifi not working

I am using Android Revolution HD 2.0.11 and when I installed it, I lost my wifi connection (my HD found many other wireless networks on my building, but not mine).
Then I manually set my router to channel 11 and it started working again. Previously, I was using the stock ROM and my router was set to channel 13 and it worked just fine.
I guess this may have to do with the higher channels and the wifi driver.
I just wanted to let the developers know about this, but am not allowed to post in the development forum yet. Maybe this is a known fact, but I couldn't find any information on this.
By the way, in case anyone is wondering, I need to manually set my router to one of the highest channels in order to get a stable wireless connection at home.
Also, my wife's Legend with rooted stock ROM has been working the whole time on channels 13 and 11.

MB200 wifi tethering to Nexus 7

So, this seems to be a rather unique position i'm in. The nexus 7 not having adhoc support seems to be a pretty common thread, and the only solution I seem to be finding is to use FoxFi on the hotspot phone. I'm assuming this is because FoxFi doesn't broadcast the hotspot as an Adhoc connection?
There is also the fix to change the settings on the more standard Wifi Tether for root users app. My Motorola Dext is too old and crappy to actually have any settings. I can use WEXT (ad-hoc) only for the setup method, which obviously isn't going to work if I want to connect with my N7.
Anyway, I thought I'd try the foxfi thing so I could actually play Ingress outside of my home in this backwoods rural area, HOWEVER, my Motorola Dext (Canadian, on Bell's network if that means anything), mb200, is, again, far too crappy to have FoxFi support. I tweaked and tinkered for ages but still it fails to activate the wifi hotspot.
I'm curious about the wpa_supplicant "fix". I haven't found any thread that gives me any confidence is downloading and tweaking my system files yet, but i've heard some ROM's might have fixed it. I'm on Cyanogen nightlies, does anyone know of a rom that fixes it, or can lead me to some knowledge on tweaking the wpa_supplicant file myself
basically, I've been finding a whole bunch of "maybe this will work", "Try this - no response" threads, and nothing that takes you from step one to solution. I'd like to find a solution
Thanks!

[Q] Bluetooth interference with wifi 4.4.2

Hello xda community,
I recently purchased a bluetooth mouse to connect to my nexus 4's slimport TV setup I have going.
The issue that I discovered is that while my bluetooth mouse is connected, my wifi is very laggy. I searched the net and found out this is a common issue with kit kat and our beloved phone, but was supposed to be fixed in the latest version 4.4.2.
What was also suggested is that to change my wifi band to 5ghz, unfortunately that isn't an option as my wifi router only supports 2.4ghz.
My nexus is currently rooted and I'm using Dirty Unicorns v7 4.4.2 rom.
My question to you guys/gals is what rom are you using, with bluetooth and wifi 2.4ghz with no interference. Because that seems like my only solution and I don't just blindly want to flash every rom available.
Thanks in advance!

You might want to change to a different frequency in your router to see whether that helps. Also in your phone, select 2.4Ghz in Settings for wifi
thanks for the reply, but I've tried changing channels on my router wit no difference.
So much for 4.4.3 fixing the issue... So disappointed in this phone right now...
I'll probably be getting the oneplus one. Can't be bothered with this crap anymore

[Q] Nougat tethering issues

Curious to know if the community is having tethering issues since going to Nougat.
Tethering does turn on and it does work to an extent but it'll either turn off whenever it wants or it'll simply stop serving requests. There is not a set amount of time for either before experiencing the issue. I'm pointing this issue directly at the tethering aspect as the phone will always browse and do anything as expected even tho the tethering clients are unable to. Even when the clients are unable to browse I can still ping the exact website that will not load. I can even curl those pages and get data back..
Here's what I've tried:
- Disabled adblocker on the phone
- Kept phone awake
- Connected to the charger
- Disconnected from the charger
- added net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the build.prop
- Nuked and paved with different ROMs
Going to try installing a different tethering app to see if that works. UPDATE: This also produced the same results
I can connect to another 6p not running nougat and everything works as expected with the same computer so that rules out the computer.
Anyone else running into this issue? Anyone have a fix?
Thanks
What carrier are you on? Does hotspot work ok?

What carrier are you on? Never had any issue on AT&T and use it extensively. Stock rom, rooted, EX kernel.

Verizon also using EX kernel. It's almost like some sort of cache fills up
Thank you!!! I thought it was just my phone hardware maybe. Having the same exact issue once I hit the official version of nougat. It didn't pop up until I believe thr 5th developer release as an issue. It really annoys me either streaming or online gaming it'll just cut out. I am really close to just going back to one of the developer previews that it did not occur on. Please anybody who can fix this issue or needs anything like a logcat, let me know.

What carrier are you on? Tethering can mean Wi-Fi, USB, or BT. I guess you are talking about the Wi-Fi hotspot because it's the most commonly used. My Wi-Fi hotspot is working fine on AT&T, although I haven't used it for gaming. Haven't heard back from OP, but I think he may be talking about Wi-Fi as well? You could try changing frequencies under advanced settings to toggle the hotspot to use 5Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz if you haven't tried that (and your equipment supports it).
I was having same issue also running latest PN, EX 4.04, radio/bootloader & vender.
This seemed to help but just started yesterday.
In Terminal Emulator, enter below code one by one:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit
------------------------------------------------------
Reboot
Now if I could figure out how to stop adding a network every time I connect to hotspot with cp when I turn hotspot off & back on.
I'm thinking this could me a Verizon unlimited thing since not many people have anymore & very few people have stated issues.
Update: The above is not going to cut it! Hotspot seems to hang on longer but still disconnects!
I have Verizon, and yes, I am speaking to*Hotspot tethering. I have this issue only on Nougat. When I use a*Marshmallow based rom it doesn't happen. I use my hotspot as my home internet (laptops, smart tv, tablets, smartphones) and all of them drop connection after random intervals (most times after an hour to few hours). Not until the DPs for 7.1 did a change in the way it failed happened. Before those DPs, it would shut off and the notification icon would disappear (hotspot actually off). After*the DPs for 7.1 started, the tethering would still be on (on the*6P) but no device would show that it was on (in range). I have to shut it off, then*turn it back on. I use stock, Cortex or PN mostly. Root or no root. I also do not use custom kernels unless they come with the rom, although I have tried a couple to see if it would fix it. It didn't.*I have always attributed it to either faulty hardware somehow or DOZE improvements that kicked in. The DOZE came to mind as it almost seems as the phone is trying to*get into deeper sleep. I don't know. Any help would be appreciated.
Same issues with pixel, some said it works others did not.

Yes for wifi tethering.
Well cannot seem to find anything on disconnect solving issues, posted solutions seem to be if tethering does not work at all.
Hope someone can solve.

Did you try toggling hotspot to use 5Ghz instead of 2.4?

Laptop I'm using only does 2.4.
Was never a problem with the HTC M8 on MM, just recently bought the 6P.
Thanks
Had another laptop that had that had a 2.4 / 5Ghz dual wireless card.
Holds wifi hotspot with no disconnects whatsoever, longest time connected was 2.5 hours.
I will have to settle for usb tether on the 2.4 laptop for now until the wiser ones can find cause.
Just ran into this issue on the 6p running 8.0 beta 3. Seem related to the data encryption of the wifi hotspot. Turning encryption seems to solve the problem. However, I would say that is not really a solution, unless you don't running unsecured hotspot.
Edit: Turns out it only helps. Not a solution. Still disconnects just not as often often.

5ghz Tethering

Good day everybody,
Looking for some guidance here. Coming from several previous Nexus devices I assumed when I purchased this device the option to broadcast a hotspot in the 5ghz band was the norm. Much to my dismay I've found out otherwise even after the Nougat update. This is supposedly a feature from MM but ZTE appears to not have included it.
So my question is do any of the current ROMs available include this feature? and/or is there a way to enable this on a rooted device by editing some system files m
The reason I would like this feature is that my K1 Shield tablet has very unpleasant latency and connection stability issues while using the GeForce now service. I'm a long haul truck driver so I believe most of the issues are being caused due to interference in the 2.4ghz band as my 6P in the 5ghz band played just as nice as my wired Ethernet connection at the house on Shield TV.
Thanks any input is appreciated.
