Will apps/games installed via browser get updates? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are many apps/games that we can install to the NP via the web Play Store interface. As these are pseudo-official and not side-loaded, will they get updates directly on the NP's Play Store? ES File Explorer is a good example, but I'm about to purchase Modern Combat 5 through the web (why on Earth do we only have 4 available on the NP? I thought it was officially supported?)

In my experience, no they wont. I had to manually update Limelight the other day (delete it then push it back down from the web) after noticing my phone had the new version for a week but the NP did not. I think only those apps that show in the play store on the player will auto update.

the easiest way is through settings, apps menu. open each sideloaded app, and you'll see an option for update.

I installed Monsters Ate my Birthday cake from the web, and got an update notification in the NP regular play store app to update it. However, I have seen other games such as both R-Types, that I installed from the web, they since received an update, but did not come up on the NP as needing an update. So I guess it's hit or miss really.

I tried this method this weekend but did not see an update option on any of the apps in the settings menu. This was for sideloaded, web loaded or play store installed apps.

weird, I can't find anything either, but I'm pretty sure I did that for some sideloaded apps. Will look into it and report back.

[Q] Google Play Remote install problems

Since I have updated to 4.2.2 OTA (all Stock) installing Apps using the Google Play website does not seem to really work.
When I click install on play.google.com nothing happens on the phone until I open the Google Play App. Seems like that the service that used to connect to google play regulary does no longer run?
Anyone else seen this?
Related note ... I did the google framework service thing to get it to show the OTA after installing the update my phone did not show up in play.google.com at all until I have installed a random app using the google play app.
Open Play Store and check your auto update settings. Probably you need to enable it.
The autoupdate setting has nothing to do with it; I'm experiensing the same issue, the download starts, but it takes 1 minutes before it starts, even if I have Google Play opened on my phone

It is enabled but not sure how this is related ... I am talking about install / remove didn't test update yet.
OK I have fixed it.
Did Settings -> Apps -> All and Cleared the Data for Google Play and Google Play Services.
Rebooted the phone. Opened Play Store once and now thinks work like as expected.

This is what worked for me:
Go into your device's app manager. Select Google Play app. Click on uninstall updates. This will take it back to the factory setup state. I then had to reboot the device as I initially got a message that Google Play has stopped working when I tried to open the app. After reboot, open Google Play and accept the terms and conditions. This got the install from website issue fixed.

Play store on google chrome

Is there an option or setting in chrome or 4.2.2 that can turn off the popup and allow you to view the play store using chrome? Right now if you click a link going to a page on the play store, a popup displaying your browser and play store apps asking which to open it with. The final option is "always" or "just once", but it only works on the specific link and not the entire domain.
I would like to use the play store from my browser since it appears there are more options available, more info on apps, more search/device options and you can see ALL the apps, not just the ones for your device. I am sure there may be tricks to do these things and more in the play store, but it would be much simpler to just be able to view it with chrome without that darned popup at each link.
Hopefully it is just something simple I am overlooking. Thanks for any help on this one!
Maybe if you clear deafaults on Google Play, it will stop asking which app to use? Installed a couple games through Chrome (on Galaxy Nexus) without getting any popup asking which app to use.

[Q] Install from Play Web Store broken.

I recently restored from Spectrum ROM to my stock rooted Nandroid backup with TWRP; now when I try to install an app to my phone from the Google Play web store on my PC browser it says installed but doesn't push the app to my phone. Also it lists a number of apps as requiring an update but on the device they are up to date.
I have searched the forums and all I could find was to clear app data and cache for the Google Play Store application in settings, which I did but the problem remains. Help would be greatly appreciated as I tend to install apps from my PC often.
You are using the web play store. Try the play app from within the rom.
If you insist on doing the web based. Make sure it is sending to your device/phone #.

Everything works fine within the app on the phone. However I spend a lot of time on PC and Macbook and prefer to research apps on the Play Web Store and send the installs to my phone remotely.
How do you ensure it is sending to your phone #? In Play Web Store settings>device settings my device Telus SGH-i337m is the one listed. When I go to 'my applications' it shows that i'm missing app updates, that apps are installed which I no longer have on the device, and doesn't show some I do have on the device.
I have the same issue on my S4 on Sprint... I wonder if the latest firmware update broken something.
hopefully resolved

No joke, these steps from https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3265955?p=android_device_manager&rd=1 worked for me.
Just remember to refresh the android device manager page

Mine is still kinda borked. I can install apps from the play WEB store, but it does not show the proper list of currently installed apps. It shows some that I have deleted long ago. :/

List of sideloaded games that work

Does anyone have a list of sideloaded games from Google play or Amazon that works with the Nvidia gamepad or any other one. Not sure if being rooted or not rooted is of importance!
I would like to see if FIFA 15 works!
I have yet to find a single game that WON'T work. I use Market Helper and then use the web installer so I don't have to sideload the APK files, and they all have worked with a mouse. You can also use droidmote to controll touch games, though I havent' done that I always have a mouse and keyboard at the ready.
They all work you just need a mouse to play the games they made for touch screen.

Has anyone tried any of the games from Nvidia Tegra Zone? I believe they are mostly for tegra 3 but should still work though the graphics might be a little lower?
I haverun games from both the play store, and nvidias own store, and they all work as intended. Even nvidias game stream worked pretty well. I was just playing Saints Row the Third, and set the game on ultimate, and it played with no noticable lag, and yes, I know it's not being run on my system, but mearly the fact that nvidia's servers will handle ultimate with no lag also. Great experience, and better in fact that it was on my PC.

Do apps installed with market helper show in leanback launcher or are they hidden like sideloaded apps?

It's not that they are hidden, but they don't have Android TV support. One of the biggest parts of "support" is having an icon that can display on the TV interface, so they won't show up. I suggest sideload launcher for any non supported apps.
I've been using xbmc/kodi as my launcher and am pretty happy so far.
Can you tell me how to get market helper working? I haven't had any luck getting it to work.

Give it root permissions when it asks. Pick tablet, then nexus 7, hit apply, then ga to a web browser on any machine, go to the play store on the web, and install to the nexus 7 from that. Done.

Grim Fandango, how to install

I know I could stream Grim Fandango Remastered from my pc but I do not have a Nvidia card only the intergrated Intel HD graphics. Fangdango is available for android but it is not compatible with any of my devices if it were I would d/l it and then sideload it. What can I do?
Do you have any devices that it is compatable with? If so, you can install it there, and move the APK.
..
Every device I have is rooted but the only one that is registered that is compatible is the Nexus 9 but I returned it because it was running very hot and bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 SM-T800 which my daily device now. It is rooted and running a custom 5.0.2 rom. I tried every device option available with Market Helper but Grim Fandango still did not show in the play store. I tried using my chrome browser and going to the play store and Grim Fandango would show but it still only showed it being compatible with the Nexus 9. Strange when I clicked on the play store compatibility list the device I was spoofing was not there. I double checked the device manager page and it showed that the device had ben changed to the spoofed one. Am I doing something wrong?

That's what you want. With market helper, it doesn't change the play store on the device. You have to install it on the web interface to the spoofed device. The play store on your device will update all installed apps though luckly, supported or not.
But, the spoofed device is not showing up in my compatibility list. The list is still only showing the original list. I am using the play store through Chrome browser. I'm starting to feel like a noob again! ?
..
So, I definitely have to use a pc. I thought since there was a in app link to the Android device mgr there was no need to use the pc.

I didn't have to use a pc. I used chrome browser installed on the shield. Just refreshed a few times in that and the spoofed device showed up.
..
Yes, it works on the shield. You have to install via web browser, but the device does the rest.

Back on topic, did you manage to get this working?
To be honest, I have been sidetracked most of this week with an addition I am adding to my home. I will try this coming week and post results.
No I could not get it to work, it kept crashing. There is a version of it ln the Nvidia Store but it is only for the Shield tablet. How hard would it be to port it to the NSATV. I guess Nvidia would have to ask Doublefine for permission or else Doublefine would have to do it themselves? How does one bring this to Nvidias attention?
any updates whit grim fandango on android tv?
Its on sale this weekend
