Lollipop on Note 4 - Video - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 General

Looks like there is a very early build of Lollipop on the Note 4 on video. (From SamMobile)
Looks pretty nice. Let's see what Volta/ART will do for our phones.

Once it's released for the Note 4, I'll wait about 6 months before I upgrade. I'm still waiting for Googles' beta testers [Nexus owners] to complete their jobs.

I posted some early impressions of my new Note 4 that arrived Tuesday at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57241199&postcount=40 & how I was looking forward to Android 5L since the current 4.4.4 wasn't much of a software upgrade over my highly customized Note 2 with 4.3 & this video is not very inspiring.. I do want the functionality of Android 5 but I'm still not feeling awesome about the garish design aesthetics & seriously question if Vice President of Design Matias Duarte has the style leadership for the future of Android: http://gizmodo.com/googles-design-mastermind-explains-the-future-of-androi-1596880308

I'm not trying to hate on this current Vice President of Design Matias Duarte but Google & Samsung should continue offering maximum customizability & versatility because TW & stock Android L is far from aesthetically pleasing to many. Thankfully there are other launchers for those not sure if they want to root every device but do I need to rapidly run from stock or be on acid to appreciate such garish design language..WTF-additional & darker-cooler OS themes [email protected]! - don't just force your corporate style on users like Apple..http://officialandroid.blogspot.com/2014/10/android-be-together-not-same.html
I'm starting to get more used to how Android L may be on the Note 4 at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN2R4A4J2M_VlohhH3Upt8w

The demise of the menu hard key, is another backwards move IMO. Not only the "BUBBLE GUM" colors of android now, but the fact that the menu button now takes up screen real estate, is absolutely stupid. Not even the Iphone looks as much as a pre teen operating system, as android does now.

Should rephrase that to Samsung Android, AOSP/CM looks amazing. And pretty much android was supposed to ditch hardware keys all together.

Thats an even worse move. Soft Nav bars take up more screen space. Aosp/Cm are fine if you dont want to use the full functions of the Note 4. unless they have figured out a way to implement the Spen sdk. I will wait till someone like BoBcat releases a rom, then see if he will let me port it to T-mobile

Not really because than phones are smaller because they need less space. Reason why a 6" Screen phone is the same size as our 5.7" phone. Also Spen works just fine on AOSP/CM has since like CM10.

No matter what size the phone is Soft navigation bars take up screen space. Until we get a bezel-less screen, nav bars are ridiculous. LG G3 is a perfect example. It has a bezel at the bottom of the screen, yet has a soft nav bar. If they had put hardware buttons on it, they would save screen space. I might even still own it too...

Yeah but buttons still take up space also and your point?

Notice the Nexus 6 is the same size almost and gasp has more screen space with the soft nav bar which you can also change down to like 8dpi so it will take almost no space

The buttons are also immersive...

+1 Same sentiment. LOL.
similar curve with overall ugly looking lol
i still think x10 is the best looking smart phone nowday maybe ever
shame for SE make this good thing become ****
You guys do realize that this phone has MULTI TOUCH, SUPER AMOLED, 16GB ROM, 512MB RAM and OH YEAH DIVX PLAYER.
I dont see how this is copy of x10?? I mean if having big screen only makes all smart phones copy of iphone, then yeah it is a copy. But you know what I would trade this for my x10. I would even add $200 extra if needed lol
Guys this is a better phone don't be a jelaous baby, be COOL
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that phone at all.
Looks pretty sweet, and I'm sure it's users are happy with it. No need to get jealous/hate on something someone else likes.
we are not jealous just compared the looks of it side by side and you'll see. are you blind or something?
They better make their "OWN" design on phone.
were not jealous!!!!

Oh, by the way. Sony is coming out with a single touch zoom that will beat multitouch and the X10 now has a Divx player, although it's not released yet. I'm playing high quality AVI's on my X10 at 24 fps, so nyah

Yeah you guys are totally right. X10 is an awesome phone, and none of you will ever trade it for Galaxy S, even if they offer $1000.00 with it.
Anyone else wants to quote me an explain why x10 is so awesome??
You are talking rubbish, FIRST OF ALL, we didnt said galaxy is some kind of cheap worse copy of x10, what we are saying, is that DESIGN is copied, not the specs, not something else, DESIGN. Do you understand now ?

DESIGN OK
From the above picture we can see the main differences between x10 and Samsung i897 Captivate;
1) Captivate has straight body whereas x10 has curved body.
2) x10 has a curved metallic feature, captivate has none.
3) x10 has 3 physical button on the buttom, whereas captivate has touch sensetive button. And Captivate has 4 buttons.
4) The top part of x10 has semicircle whereas in captivate its like a slot.
5) The body of captivate has fillet (curved edges), x10 has edged faces (except for the top).
6) The top of cativate is circular but its flat for x10.
7) In x10 there is the volume buttons and the camera button on the side. In captivate, its only the volume button.
From the above picture we can see the main differences between x10 and Samsung i897 Captivate;
1) The back is made of one piece for x10, Captivate has a battery cover of different color (and probably material).
2) The camera is situated along the center line of x10. The camera of Captivate is in the top left corner.
3) The speaker output is at the back for captivate whereas for x10 it is on the side.
JUST BECAUSE the phone has no dpad or trackball, and has 4'' screen, does not make it a copy. Yes x10 has better looks, I know that and that is why I bought it over n1. But that has nothing to do with Captivate being a copy of x10.
Now after all this explanation if you still see them having same DESIGN, then I have to say that you need either a eye test or brain test. Its never too late you know
The guy above me does not understand what we meant.
ITS NOT LIKE SAMSUNG MAKE A CLONE OF X10.
Would you differentiate all their old models at that captivate
As you can see. the base part of capitivate is the same as X10. The format of Captivate looks like X10. Of course they will not do the same thing as X10 as they will get issues and will call it a china phone.
Look at Galaxy S the BASE PART OF that phones comes from Iphone.
Now compare their old phones like Omnia 2. The phone used to be rounded edge
Compared them and Check the difference between the phone they copy and the SAMSUNG PHONE DESIGN THAT IS USED TO BE
I'm going to go out on a HUGE limb here and say that it's probably a little difficult to really make a touchscreen phone look significantly different from the competition.
There's only so many ways you can configure a 4 inch screen with some buttons.

EXACTLY! Couldn\t have said it better myself!
Also, normal people tend to like their newly-acquired phones a lot, so they will defend them. And that applies to SE owners, Samsung owners, Nokia, HTC, Apple, etc.
So, comparison threads can end up full of aggression and not so useful posts.

I'll tell you what, i can never go back...

to a smaller screen now. This phone rocks! Sure, i have a few (non-dealbreaker) gripes similar to others' but ignoring those, the Note is PERFECT. The screen is the most important aspect of a smartphone and the Note's is gorgeous. I hope Samsung continues to make devices this big and badass because like i said, i won't ever be able to use a crummy less-than-5inch screen again.

I couldn't agree more.
At first I thought it was a giganta-phone. But having been a phone owner since 1991 (when they used to cost real money), I must say the Note cleverly nudges the envelope.
My other smartphones look like wee toys.
My tablets look like laptops with their balls cut off.
Out and about: GNote
Between home and office: 17" MBP
But only as long as my eyes can take the searing resolution! My 41-year-old wife fell vocally beyond that 2 months ago...........

ahahahhaha! Nice one! Never heard it before. Or at least be putted like that.
And on the subject, a 5.5" or 5.7" is NOT at all in my opinion a big upgrade from the Note. Or atleast for those who already bought or planning to buy the Note since I haven't heard/read any rumors or anything about any phones in the 5.5-6.5" category.
Now a 6" android phone? With a Dual/Quad SoC with oled/amoled screen? YES SIR!
I was using 7" galaxy tab but its too big .i think if they keep the size og GN but make the screen lil bigger that would be enough for a phone..

I don't think so. It would kill pocketability. You can squeeze in a little more by killing all the hardware buttons, but this is close to the limit.
The pocketability is great now, but we haven't had people putting cases on yet. Bigger+CASE? Ugh.

Well I respect your opinion but for me it's different.
I measured my usual pockets(costumes/jeans) and they are 19cm deep(Jeans) and 17cm(costumes pants) when sitting. So I can staff in there any phone below the above sizes before it's top/bottom emerges.
Oh and both pocket's are abount 12cm wide.
Yeah, we all have many different clothes that it will not fit(maybe same goes for GNote) but making a statement here.
So a 6" GNote look alike phone based on my measurements consisting of H:160mm x W: 92-94mm is really the actual maximum size of pocketability for me.
BUT: Practical? Manageable? Easy to use? Good for a bit of longer than usual calling etc, etc? Nuh, I don't think so.
But then again.. I don't call/speak on the phone much!
Edit: It's not THAT bigger!

Same here...been rockin' a dell streak for over a year. I've looked at the SGS2, but it seems TINY compared to a 5" screen. If the note ever gets to the states, Amazon (US), I'm getting one. A 4.7" would be about as small as I could go now.

Oh I had done many customizations for a friends X7500(Athena) and I was a real joy. NOT comfortable at all in your pocket. Why I'm saying this?
Just to think from where we came from and we end up with the Note. HTC Advantage, HTC Shift(can't remember if it was released) and so on.

Galaxy S II vs Galaxy Note

I just got my Note yesterday and spent a great deal of time with the device. I figure this might be a good place to share the experience
1. Pentile display complaints on Note is a moot point. Specially around the curved text edges, it looks like Note is noticeably sharper than the S2
2. Feel is very similar. Note is pretty much a bigger slightly quicker S2 with a larger screen/battery
3. SAMOLED HD is gorgeous
4. Sad to say this but i'm already used to the device size and S2 feels tiny every time i go back to it
5. Onscreen keyboard is easier to use due to size and spacing (it's probably the best onscreen keyboard that i've used and this includes the 10.1 and ipad)
6. S-Pen is awesome and it works much better than any other stylus that i've used including the capacitive ones

strange question, how about placing an apple on top or perhaps the odd grape or two
^^ lol. Its so he can see the size difference. i would like to see that too actually as im considering getting a Note next month too.
How about fluid and smoothness? as good as S2?
Is it a pain to use in one hand i.e reaching the far side of the screen? or do you need to use 2 hands?
I read somewhere on here that bigger screens dont actually mean more text on the page, its just larger text. If you load the same page in both browsers do you actually see a lot more on the page of the Note?

If the screen is bigger, but the resolution is the same (e.g. Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2, the latter has bigger screen but same 800x480 resolutio, so the view will be the same on both, with S2 text being larger). However, the Note has higher 720p resolution, so it should fit more.
Sounds good.
I prefer big screens (100inch screen via projector in my living room lol) so i would love the Note. Im gunna pop down to city centre on the weekend and try get a bit of play time with one in the stores.
The modding scene doesnt look very big on XDA at the moment, i guess thats cos its still new though.
I needed a second phone and was about to get a Note. Then I found out it doesn't have Gorilla glass and some users have already reported it easily gets scratched. I hate screen protectors. I agree with the rest of its wonders, but no Gorilla means no phone to me.

Gorilla glass is just a brand name and samsung might be building their own fortified glass similar to nexus
Btw, gorilla glass does scratch and it all depends on what your device gets exposed to

Nexus 4 Display

I have a Nexus 7 thinking about a Nexus 4. Do you loose about .3" of display diagonal because of lower 3 key area like you do on the N7? So the 4.7" display is really only 4.4" usable? I also thinking about a Note II, you get a full 5.5".
The Nexus 4 is fine. The screen is rather large. It's quite the same size as the GS3.

I think most of us ditch the navbar at the earliest opportunity and claim the full 4.7" back.
Then use 'pie' controls of some sort or 'button saviour', where you slide you finger/thumb from your chosen area of screen to bring up navigation controls... even though i explained it badly it works well.
I just placed an order for the nexus 4 and I kinda had the same concern. I get what you mean by sliding from the edge of the screen to bring up nav menu. Could you please provide some links to help me look into it more?
Thanks

I used GMD Gesture Control to remove the soft keys and notification bar at top. This app also lets you assign an easy gesture or screen swipe to replace the back and home keys. It's awesome https://play.google.com/store/apps/...nb29kbW9vZGRyb2lkLmdlc3R1cmVjb250cm9sZGVtbyJd
I also use Nova Launcher Prime and the Tesla Unread add-on that tells me when I've missed a call or text on screen. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDMsImNvbS50ZXNsYWNvaWxzdy5ub3RpZmllciJd
Lastly, I use Battery widget reborn Beta to check on my battery life at a glance. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...m5ldC5odWJhbGVrLmFuZHJvaWQucmVib3JuLmJldGEiXQ..
With all of this stuff I linked, you can free up your screen real estate and never miss a step.

but then you would just see the screen with no way of getting a feeling how the full screen mode actually looks if you use the device

its a weird trend. i mean who cares really. youre loosing a couple of pixels so what. android is programmed to take them away anyway when needed, the bar will change position, make way or disappear completely when needed. its flexible. whats more important, its made for fast mavigation, it feels natural the way it is and google had that in mind for sure.
i've always felt that navigation on hardware crippled phones feels awkward, its like out of place. buttons are not placed where you can reach them, they're hidden away to make way for a monstrous display and that will diminish your experience. software buttons give you both, large screen when needed and fast, integrated navigation that is part of the whole.
ps.
as for your n7, theres so many options. gesture based, pie, or androids native UI's. i run my n7 in phone UI for instance which does wonders. the bar will nicely cling to the side in landscape orientation. if you use tabUI the space that you loose is minimal, the same actually as with a hardwarebutton device - one unified bar. its available for phones as well and works just as well
Moles is right. As cool as pie controls are, I prefer googles on screen implementation for general usage because its fast, responsive and convenient.
However it is nice to have the full 4.7 inches while using certain apps like games, readers, gallery etc. Flash a ROM that supports expandable desktop like PA and you can customize the screen real estate per app, to your liking.

Who the heck is responsible for the 4x4 grid??

I´m sorry if this has been posted before - but I can´t stand the fact, that Samsung shows such a massive effort for software optimizations and special functions, which CLEARLY are pushing the Note III to the top of every smartphone list - while, at the same time, STILL messing around with the restricted grid system in TW.
How can ANYBODY (that keeps an eye on the smartphone market and on the success of alternative launchers) think that a 4x4 grid (- on such a big device with such a great resolution -) is a good idea, looks good, feels good, makes sense or simply is a good choice??
I hate the restriction in general - it shouldn´t be that a problem to simply integrate a "free choice" function into the almighty TW. But hey, you Samsung guys...a 4x4? really?? I even used a 6x7 grid on my S3.
Sorry, perhaps it´s just my mood...

no, you are right. They have had this problem from the first note. Someone in their R&D department isn't doing their job properly or someone higher up is screwing with us. With samsung's resources, it really shouldn't be that hard to let us customize the launcher through some secret menu or something.
If you're talking about the launcher then simply install Apex or Nova. That's the first thing I do with a new phone. I can't remember the last time I saw a native TouchWiz launcher.
10x7
I've been using a 10 (+1) x 7 grid on my Note 1 w/Nova and I am already happy for the extra row I will be able to add on the taller screen of the III (this is going to be my 4S to 5 moment )

Jesus..looks like someone spilled a bag of apps on your screen.
I always replace the launchers. Just for the gestures alone. Swiping up or down or even more complex gestures for actions etc.
Im pretty sure some ROMS offer custom row densities on TW.

No. It looks even worse than apple's implementation of the launcher. Scattered.
4x4 yuck!
i hope someone figure out the knox system without voiding your warranty. i've been itching for custom rom on my to-be note 3!

Holy crap man, do you really use all that on the daily? There is an app drawer. Different folks, different strokes I guess.

4x4 works for me on my Note 2 ... you can put multiple apps into a folder. I don't see why Samsung can't offer a denser layout for those that need or want it.
Do you lose any Touchwiz functionality by installing a different launcher from the Play Store?
I suspect the 4x4 launcher was VERIZON'S doing.

can this be a thing. Like the blame obama meme but now we blame verizon for everything?
Here is my 8x9 grid on the 4 inch Galaxy S. This translates to an 11x13 grid on the note 3's 5.7 inch.
I really like this icon size. It's perfect for the size of the fingertip.
This way I only have one launcher pane and I don't need to swipe left and right.

Apex. Its maximum is 10x10.
Nova can do 16x16 through some secret taps.
I'm hoping Apex gets its maximum increased by the time I get my note 3, as I like it better than nova.

Normally no. However this version swiping up launches the magazine app.
But like I said most custom launchers have a custom swiping feature. So you can make a swipe up down double tap etc do almost anything you want . apex and nova are the most popular.
