[Q] [i9505] Galaxy S4 Baseband and IMEI: Unkown - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been having problems with my 4 month old GS4 lately, mainly because I was not able to make or receive calls and texts. I looked up my problem, and eventually traced it down to a unknown baseband and IMEI problem. Sure enough, my baseband and IMEI was missing. I researched and found out that you need to backup your EFS folder as it may have been corrupted, unfortunately I was not able to do so. I even tried factory resetting my phone to stock TouchWiz, hearing reports that a hard reset can fix the problem; unfortunately, I'm still missing my IMEI and Baseband. All help is appreciated
This Phone was/is rooted, and has been flashed several times with custom ROMS.
Thank you in advance.

If the problem started without you flashing or doing anything else, then you have a hardware failure. Your emmc chip is probably broken. Bring it to a service center.

I'm not so sure really. I flashed Cyanogenmod and it was working fine, I could make and receive calls. However, my SIM card died and I had to replace it. That was when I noticed the problem.
EDIT: Okay, I failed to read completely. I kept reflashing nandroid backups however, after experiencing problems unrelated to this.

Try using root explorer and see if your efs folder is ok?

How do I know if it is okay??? P.S. I can't find certain files like nv_data.bin... sign of corruption?

It might be, since my efs folder have nv_data.bin but i can't tell for sure since i'm still a newbie here.
Did you try searching for efs backup on the phone? I know some roms do automatic backup after flash so it might be left there somewhere.

I don't understand what you are saying.
When did your problem start? Did you do anything or did it happen without you doing anything.

I tried, there was none unfortunately, I also flashed back to stock twice. If there was, it was probably wiped.

I can't say for sure. My IMEI and Baseband was visible when I was running CM11. My SIM died eventually, so I had 0 service after that for about a week. During this time, I flashed AntaresOne's Unofficial cm12 5.0. Maybe it was corrupted when I flashed it? Anyway, My efs folder appears to be missing files aswell. I can't seem to find nv_data.bin perhaps my efs folder really is corrupted?

What have i done, URGENT help needed

hi guys, i really messed up this time, for some reason i lost my efs backup, and for some reason i flashed an XXDMG based rom, and i got the fake imei error, so i done some research and flashed the new modem that solved the issue, once that happened i also backed my efs up which i have sitting on my desktop in .img form.
So i went on 2 flash a 4.3 rom and all i was getting was errors,so i odined a stock rom XXALJ2, and ive just been getting this factory error, id love to restore the efs but the damn /efs wont mount, and i always get an error along the lines of write error or something, in the frustation of the moment i done a stock odin (xxalj2) and ticked phone efs clear, and still, nothing is happening - its the same old error - the efs didnt even clear.
So now i have a phone in factory mode, with no signals and i honestly have no clue what to do next,.
Any help will be much appreciated.

If is not hardware, chances are that the efs folder is corrupted.
Try a different kernel
Try a different modem
Flash full wipe custom rom again..
Last flash stock rom...
If all fails the problem most like it is in the efs folder, if you have a backup restore it

Glad is working mate
Back up before you do anything else do not forget to backup the efs folder
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
same issue.
I have the same issue as described by the op.
I flashed back to official 4.4.2 and the problem persist.
IMEI number is correct.
IMEISV is 01
Ive been trying to fix this for over a week to no avail. Losing my mind. Is there anything else you can suggest to fix this issue?
Phone is an i9500.
Was really hoping for some help by now. This will be the second time ive posted to this site in the 2 years ive been here with zero responses.
As a side note. I wanted to add that at the same time i started having the "not registered on network" error my sd card stopped being read by the phone also. I replaced the sim/sd holder in the phone itself hoping this would fix both issues but it has obviously not. Still not reading the sd. Says its blank or unrecognized file system. When i try to format it it doesn nothing. This is the sd I had in the phone before having issues. It worked fine then.
The phone just suddenly stopped working one morning. I used it to send a couple text and make a call, next time i picked it up "not registered" issue began. No changes to the phone in between those times.
I figured I would add this info in hopes of gaining a response.
Thanks.

Need Help! Unknown Baseband, Null Imei

Hey guys,
So I am a beginner here, had no idea what I was doing and somehow I ended up messing up/bricking my S4. Long story short, after several days of messing around with it, I was finally able to take firmware through ODIN back to stock.
The issue is: The phone still does not recognize my sim card, when I check baseband it says Unknown, and IMEI is Null/Null. After further research, it seems that this has something to do with EFS. Unfortunately, I did not back up any such files since I have no real idea what I am doing.
Can anyone help me out with this? Galaxy S4- SGH-I337, NB1.
I just need the most simple fix to get phone working again.
Thanks.
Get a s4 from a friend and make a back up of the EFS. That's how I have heard people make it work
Maybe this can help you.

The only issue with that is they want me to back up and restore the EFS. I did not back up my EFS initially so I feel it is too late for that.

Did you ever make a nandroid backup at all? I know twrp backs up the efs hopefully you have that somewhere.
There is an app in the playstore that will give you your efs info using other info. It's called meid converter. Good luck.

It will tell you your imei, and other info that you might be missing. From there you will have to try and figure out a way to reinput them manually. There was an app called anycut that worked great for things like this back in the gingerbread days. I'm sure there are ways to do it in terminal emulater now hopefully a more knowledgeable user can help out with that part.
Still cant figure out what I should do here. Any further ideas?
I have tried changing the firmware via Odin several times, and I am still having the same issue! Can someone please instruct on how to get the baseband and IMEI back if it was never backed up in the first place.
Thanks!!

Have you tried flashing stock with Odin?
Have you still got a radio signal (Make calls / text etc) ?
If not, you might have lost your EFS partition, which afaik, needs a professional repair to fix unless you backed up that partition first

Before you try anything, I strongly advise you to backup your EFS partition or you could end up with no signal at all
IMEI and Radios are both contained in the EFS partition, lose that, your screwed

Might be too late if the EFS partition is corrupted and you don't have an IMEI and can't make calls
There are a couple of threads kicking about on XDA S5 forums where people have managed to recover their phones with similar problems, have a read through the Q&A forum and see if you can find them, some fixed by flashing stock, not sure how that worked, but apparently it did
Read others saying they backed up a working S5 EFS and restored it to the broken one
Have a read and see what you can find

so you saying the only thing i can do is to flash a new imei with octoplus or some other kind of boxes.
and if i recover imei from other phone it will not cause network problem becuase there is two phones with the same imei ??
The law in most countries states that the only IMEI number you can use in your phone is the one it came with.....
Nobody here on XDA is going to give you advice on how to change your IMEI for that reason......it's against the law..... *and* as such, it's against XDA rules as well......

Need EFS Backup of WORKING Nexus 6P

Google will not admit this but there were major security flaws in factory images before jan,2017.
Read for yourself below article.
Link: https://www.google.com/amp/www.tech...d-nexus-6-patch-fixes-modem-vulnerability.htm
They patched it in Jan. But effected users like us(who got effected on 2016) got proper fu***.
The result : NO SERVICE but detects sim card.
Kindly.....Plz....plz...plz....make a copy of your efs and provide it in this thread. Please also mention what factory image/build number u are using.
No one will give you his EFS backup because its unique for each phone..so you cant use someone else EFS on your phone...

Really?? Thats a big news for me its no problem do i know him or not.. How can you use someone else EFS/IMEI.. it would be 2 phones with same IMEI number..maybe it will work, but its like you use someone else ID card and present it like its yours..

Hey,
When the IMEI is corrupted on the software side, it still shows up using:
fastboot getvar all
So the IMEI is somehow corrupted on the EFS partition. How, I don't know. Seems like the EFS acts like a bridge between hardware/software. Of course, I could be wrong...
Some have tried but didn't succeed. Now, it's not the first time I see someone using another EFS backup and getting his IMEI back. I don't know why it would get "their"" original IMEI instead of the one included in the EFS backup either. But i guess they must all lie saying it fixed their device.
Cheers...
I have restored EFS using a backup from someone else's device EFS. It did not change my original imei.

Down do it. The efs is device dependent. It will contain things like your imei. So even if restored on another device it will end up causing issues due to the same imei on different devices. It can also make it so things like WiFi don't work

Okay thank you, I had no clue about efs so I'll take your word on it.
Guys can anyone share efs so that I can restore and save my phone..I Have no signal ispitevof detection sim card...it shows no service.. But when I use jio it shows full signal..kindly help..
I had similar problem with my OnePlus X. Apparently I was saving and restoring my efs partion with every twrp backup which eventually caused it to become currupt. Thought my phone was toast until a friend on telegram suggested deleting modem1 and modem2 files with adb commands. Sounded more destructive then good but it actually worked sim was reading again and got full use of my phone. It's good to make backup of efs but only once. Not sure if this is the fix for every phone but works with OnePlus and Xiaomi.
How to Fix EFS from Bootloader Mode using Fastboot commands
Setup ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
Enable Developer options & USB debugging on your Android device.
Connect your device to the PC and open a command window on the PC.
Issue the following commands one by one:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot reboot
Got my information from here
