Jumping Ship - Xperia Z General

Hi every one,
I'd like to get some opinion here before I make my final decision of jumping to the other phone brands, and FYI, I have a been very loyal Sony users until I lost count of how long has it really been.
Tempted by the look and praises that all LG g3 gets, and after holding it with my own hand, I'm now closer than ever towards a new phone experience. I know that I'll miss some of Sony features if I ever make the jump such as waterproofing, but I think I'm willing to take my chances, and to be honest, I'm even willing for some disappointments (well I hope not so, but just want to make myself ready if there is any).
And along with this, I'm also interested in knowing if any of you thinking of making a jump into any ships, for whatever reason it is, maybe even if you are not satisfied with Sony, well you see, it can be anything.
I will honestly appreciate all honest feed backs, and if you think that I shouldn't make the jump, please let me know why, by leaving a very good, healthy advice/criticism.
Thanks

I wouldn't do that if I were you!! It's right there's no such a different between z2 and z3 but I believe the camera experience won't be as good as sony's plus the water resistance ??

Judging by how many G3 and Z3 phones I sell at work, it's both zero. Ha!
IMHO, stick with the Sony. Better interface, water resistance, better update schedule and the G3 has buttons in a terrible and infuriating location.

Hi,
Actually I have a Xperia Z and my next phone will be a Xperia Z3 compact.
My reasons for this decision are:
- they put the Hardware of a "High-End-Phone" in a smaler case without cutting the mainreasons (eg camera, performance)
- waterresistant
- a stock-userinterface where I can change the sorting of my apps in the app-drawer

Actually I have a Xperia Z and my next phone will be a Xperia Z2 (I can't go back to a smaller screen)
But I also "play" about 20 minutes with a G3 in a store and love it. Meanwhile, If I choose the G3 I'll miss all the media apps from Sony.
The battery life in Z3 is far better than in G3.

I'm waiting for my Nexus 6, hopefully some Beast like Z4 isn't announced while I'm waiting.

I've jumped ship already. My XZ is now a glorified tablet, and I'm happier rocking a Nokia 515!

Yikes! The Nexus 6 was a disaster. Bugs, awful battery life, poor performance, a bad camera and incredibly expensive to boot. I would've waited for a Z4 if I were you. The Nexus 6 is a definite mistake by Moto/Google.

All nexus phones start like that, but at least you get an update!!!!
Z4 won't be a great leap that is my point.

Z3 is only as good spec wise as phones that came out a month after the Z2.
Qualcomm are having issues with the 810 so the Z4 will just be like a IPS screened Nexus 6 but waterproof and maybe more RAM.

Many reviewer says that you get used to the button sooner than you thought you would, but that doesn't bother me really. Right now, I'm using my button only to turn the screen on and I have "long press back button" to lock it back, I imagine, I would never use that lock button since I'm gonna do the same and G3 have double tap to wake.

With bigger screen, more pixels and smaller battery....I know that it's not gonna last as long. But I'm sure it is going to make it through my day. That is the least of my expectation. I will probably be dissapointed by it, but I hope not so.

I don't see myself using anything smaller than 5", but I think N6 is huge, iPhone 6+ is monstrous(and over-priced, and ........lets not get into that.).

I sell the G2/3 and work and deal with them often and still hate the buttons. It is in no way natural or easy for me. My fingers just don't go to the buttons.

That is it, about the same foot print, but larger screen on g3. That is one of the reason why am I considering the g3,and not to mentioned, the price.

I know, I don't think LG g3 will get anything after lollipop, but heck, my xperia z is still on 4.3. I'm the type don't bother so much about updates. Once I get the phone set up to my liking, I will probably stick with it until it's breaks apart.

pretty much I'm the same

I don't know if this is an important factor for you, but LG phones are proving to be really annoying to mod.
LG have done something to their apk files which make them difficult to decompile and recompile. In fact, some of them can't be recompiled at all yet.
One of the first things I do when I get a new handset is change the status bar and notifications screen to my liking...which is one reason why I won't be getting an LG phone anytime soon.
Gotta admit it's tempting though!

about 10 years !! w960 . x8, and now the Z !! and they were all working fine actually they are all working so far :'D !! i got disappointed with the x8 updates (however the custom roms got me back in the game) but the updates with the Z are cool !! and my phone is really satisfying i don't need anything more except the audio volume

10 reasons why you may consider upgrading to Z1

Hey guys, so I have upgraded my Xperia Z to Z1 and thought I would make a video giving you 10 reasons why you may wish to upgrade.
For most the upgrade is pointless though as the Xperia Z is still a very powerful phone and has really good specs but I thought I would point out the 10 things that are better about the Z1, so if you are in for an upgrade, you have the money definitely go for it
bro everyone want to upgrade to Z1 but considering the cost that i've already spent my 630$ and im not sure if i want to spend another 750$ for Z1 unless Sony throws any phone swap scheme. how much did you get after selling your Xperia Z?

Is your back glass lifting the way mine was? If so you should be able to get your money back in full (I was able through EU law).

No, I just sent it to have it fixed before I try and sell it. They retail for around 400$ where I live though
I will say why NOT to upgrade:
1. Too big
2. Same sound on external speaker
3. Same shutter proof cover on the glass, WTF!
4. Battery consumption is the same.
5. Web browsing, video playback time is below competitors.
Now, im my case who bought S, T and Z there is no reason to upgrade and one of the main reasons is that ASF s**t at the end of 2013, the only upgrade i can see is to leave sony and buy from competitors...but i have an entire collection of Sony since J70 and i still.. prefer to eat their crap.

1. Have you held it in your hand? It is actually way more comfortable than Z
2. The speaker placement is better though
3. You can always take it off. I have spoken to a Sony Center emloyee and apparenty those are replaceable and you do not lose your warranty (but yeah you would have to confirm that one with your retailer)
4. In tests the battery life is in fact better and in normal usage I have found it to last me longer
5. Ok but for the tests they should have switched off X-Reality in some of them they didn't and that is an extra strain on CPU and GPU

It's the matter of taste. I like Z speaker more than in Z1. Just my opinion.
My bro got the Z1 today after having a play im glad i went with the Z ultra over the Z1 (currently using a Z) the z1 is a really nice handset but for me the original z was a big leap forward for Sony where as the Z1 is just an upgrade rather than anything new.

Z Ultra is a great tablet. It is very comfortable to use, most units have a very nice display (a lot of them come with yellow hue though some worse than on my Z1). You say it is just an upgrade but with so many areas improved and redesigned it is kinda difficult to call it that.
Just an upgrade would be if they put 1 maybe 2 things from the list but here you have so many changes that it is like a completely new handset.
Of course it is a matter of personal needs and preference whether an upgrade is right for you at this moment but without a doubt it is a great piece of equipment which shows that Sony can innovate and is moving forward ahead of its competitors.

Yeah i agree its all dependent on personal taste my bro loves it coming from an S4 he is really happy (not that he didnt love his S4)
he just said the z1 felt like premium handset and was extremely solid.
Only reason i ordered the Ultra was i like to be different and nobody i know is brave enough to own a handset of that size so i know ill be unique.

Seriously the video playback time and web browsing time is not good. Video playback is like only 5 hours plus? Samsung's s3 has got like 9 hour plus and note 3 if I'm not wrong is around 11-14hours I think. Web browsing and video playback is two of the main things we do on a smartphone isn't it?

when XPERIA Z2 comes out Z1 will be just the same old forgotten toy like Z
One of my annoyances.. uhh... Two are
01. The flash is extremely weak! I've taken pictures at night side by side with another much lower end phone and my pics came out way darker. In daylight its fine.
02. The WiFi range isn't too far
Are these two points improved on in the Z1 or Ultra?

I think the s4 pro is enough; don't need to upgrade to s800, it seems like the old PCs processors war...
It seems the WiFi in Z1 has also a poor signal as the Z,one of the reasons may not get this phone if the issue is not fixed

So I had a z3 for a week z2 vs z3 differences. Almost none! Except for design

Well. The z3 looks very nice is thinner than the z2 and also lighter. That's the major difference. Design. Software and camera is almost identical as performance too. Display on the z3 I think is slightly better but not 100% sure. The z2 display is good too. Camera is the same thing. With a two or three new features mostly the downloadable apps for the camera. Battery it is better on the z3 the z2 is not bad. So I decided to sell it. I might get the z3 compact I don't think is worth it unless u love the design and the ps4 feature. Which is not out yet. Grrrr I couldn't test that.

Agree! Small update over Z2. With 4.4.4 Z2's battery performace will be as good as Z3.
And if Z2 gets good update to 4.4.4 (at it definitely will), differences will be even harder to see
But, as we said few times already - Z3 isn't here for Z2 users.
It's aiming to Z and Z1 users...
The fact that both devices are mirror images of themselves was known the day the specs of the z3 got confirmed.
Most of the differences are software based and that will narrow significantly once the z2 gets updated.

Yh. Is quite a margin i must confess. Tempting really. But here in West Africa, when a newer device comes the older one gets a HUGE price drop and resale value is almost nothing. Well. Speaking from my own point of view. I resell my devices. But anyways, i was never gonna upgrade to the Z3 anyways.. Even Z4 not sure, i want to see what M9 looks like. I think i prefer my devices stay a flagship for a whole year

Funny you should say that. I've just bought a new Z2, primarily because the phones were so similar and the Z2 was cheaper. I didn't see any reason to go for the Z3 other than better battery life.
The Z3 has remote play and such like, but that WILL come to the Z2, either by Sony themselves or by some talented individual on these very forums.
I also like the styling of the Z2 better. The Z3 looks too much like the new iphone for my tastes.
Battery life isn't an issue for me because my phone is plugged in every night anyway.
And anyway, it's only six months wait till the Z4.....
Quick Edit - I see by your signature that you have unlocked your bootloader. Have you seen any difference in the Camera or other DRM protected apps since you did it? Also, I take it you backed up your TA? Was it easy to do?

There is definitely a difference in picture quality, especially in low light pictures. Backing up the Ta partition is easy though. You just need to root first. Can restore at any time.
I was scared to get the z2 in July not knowing what the z3/next version would be like. I'm glad to hear I didn't make a totally horrible decision.
Does it really give you 2 days battery life?

Hmm, i disagree. The differences are noticeable, but not enough to get envious of Z3 owners. Source: Wife has one and I set it up for her.
4.4.4 will address the differences in the software. Flashlight on quick settings, many more headphones listed in audio, etc
The screen is brighter and whiter, with precisely the same Nova settings on wife's z3 and my z2, hers is noticeably quicker and responsive - I'd say 10% quicker.
I have to say, I am jealous of the build quality - the covers on the side are recessed a little, so removing the phone from a pouch doesn't dislodge them occasionally.
Once 4.4.4 comes along, I'll be very happy. I bought some STH30 earphones and was disappointed that my z2 doesn't list them. Wife's z3 audio is much clearer than mine with the same headphones. Software no doubt, but she has the STH30 phones listed and it makes the difference somewhere.
The phones are different. In a lot of ways.

Z2 and Z3 battery is different too. We both always get 7hrs screen on time, but wife plays *a lot* of games.
Last time we both compared, I was impressed with my 8hrs screen on time (6% batt left) and she was 10% battery up and at 8hrs46 screen on time. Not sure what she did with it those 2 days uptime though, but gaming in there no doubt.
Hope we get the z3 battery algorithms in 4.4.4!
I can't get 8 hours screen on time because if my screen is on, I'm transmitting data. I use my phone only for phone calls or chatting (sending pictures, videos, taking pictures and sharing them, etc). I get about 5-6 hours of screen on time which is just FANTASTIC in my opinion! I'm on the Z2 by the way.

It's time to say goodbye my friends! :(

After all thease months, after all good and bad moments it's time to say goodbye and move on to my next device.
I bought LG G3 couple of weeks ago and today I'm selling my Xperia Z. It's so hard to move on because Xperia Z reminds me on true legend, Xperia X10i. It's such a great device to have. In fact , after using G3 for couple of weeks I'm so disappointed with this device (laggy software, not so great build quality) so I'll probably sell it and buy a real device, Xperia device (Z2 or Z3).
I'm gonna miss this forum so much, I'm gonna miss all You guys. Good luck and take care! :good:
So, the G3 isn't great then? I'm looking at getting a new device next month and it was a possibility, as reviews seem to be all positive. The Z3 is also on my list along with the N6.
I'm leaning towards the N6 because of ease of root etc and the huge development support that comes with the Nexus devices, but I'll see closer to the time as Sony has established itself as my current best Android OEM because of the great experience I've had with the Z.
Anyway, good luck for the future and I'm sure I'll see you around.

LG G3 has beautiful display, one of the best out there, but 1440 x 2560 res is unnecessary because you can't see the difference between fullHD and this with naked eye. Camera is ok but not breathtaking (I think that LG use Sony 13 mpx module), Lollipop ROM is laggy, signal strength is lower than on other devices. Battery life is ok but not great, double tap to lock/unlock function is fantastic. If you look for development support I can't recommend you this phone, at least for now. On the other side I tested Xperia Z3 last week. Fantastic device, great looking, screen is beautiful, stock rom is fast and smooth, build quality is excellent. Battery life is insane, nice speakers, and camera is fantastic. I'm so in love with that phone man, I hope that Z3 is my next phone. And thanks for nice words.
I had a real bad experience with an LG device. The Optimus 2X was released with a lot of publicity as the first dual core Android phone and then abandoned with buggy software and only 2 updates in 2 years. I promised myself never to buy from them again, but the G3 was tempting me. Hearing your thoughts has put me off again!
So, Z3 or N6 it is probably.
Hope to see you around on the forums if I get a Z3.
Cheers.

Funny I had the LG o2x too. What a disappointing device, I still remember how unreliable it was that I couldn't even use it as an alarm clock because it use to freeze when deep sleep

Yeah, you never knew if the thing would be unresponsive when you picked it up to use it. The stock rom was woeful as well. The only reason I didn't trash it was because of the great developer support and custom roms.

If i were you i'd wait for the Z4.
Or go for the Z3, the Nexus isn't as good as it should be, the AMOLED is causing major issues.

I haven't really looked into anything yet, as I don't tend to start looking around at prices etc until I really am ready to buy a new device. The Z is still actually really usable despite being almost 2 years old now, so there's no urgent need.

MWC isn't THAT far away, and if the Z4 is announced then expect a Z3 price drop. The upgrades for the Z4 won't be game changers - an 810 with a better GPU, a slightly nicer display that may well be QHD, improvements to the camera I expect. With the amount of time people use their phones nowadays, battery life simply must improve. And with rumours that the actual Sony imaging department will handle the image processing, maybe the Z4 will get a stand-out camera. I really hope the RAW API's will be implemented by Sony. I'm looking at an upgrade too, maybe a Oneplus Two, or if they make a Nexus 5 2015 edition I'd bite. The Xperia Z was my first smartphone and I'd like to try other android devices.
Have any of you guys seen the new ASUS ZenFone that's to be released in March? It looks like an absolute animal of a phone and I'm very tempted to snap one up as soon as preorders are available because of its fantastic price and even better spec to follow, but I'm worried about the developer support as there hasn't really been a great deal of support for ASUS' previous ZenFone generations, do you guys think that the price would pull more developers in?

Is that the one with the Intel processor? Yikes, as far as I know, developer support on those devices is nowhere near the level of your standard Snapdragon phones. Exynos processors in Samsung's are very common and even those are shunnes., with developers working on Snapdragons instead.
Quad HD sounds nice on paper but it doesn't bring any visual differences that your eyes can detect. Except the low battery indicator flashing more frequently?

I have used a LG G3 for more than a while.. I couldn't see anything wrong with it on KK.. Compared its display with a Z3 and saw the difference in detail and also under sunlight it seemed better than Z3.. Ofc 2k comes into play as well.. So it would be wrong to compare. Also the gestures are nice on any high end LG phone which Xperia's miss officially.. And battery life on G3 is amazing for the h/w it has.. I hardly saw a hiccup even the LG UI.. Camera is decent(Probably same as XZ).. Atleast it seemed the same when i compared my XZ cam with it.. G3 is a beast phone and i think their LP fw update might be buggy since its just initial update.. Ofc u have to wait for another 1 or 2 bug fixing updates to experience the best of LP on any phone for that matter..

Hi
What's Google's policy regarding transferring paid for apps from one phone to another? Can they be shared on 2 phones?

You just have to sign in on the other device. I have a couple of phones and a tablet on the same Google account and can use paid apps on all of them with no issues.

Will you be getting rid of your phone?

Just wondering if you will be getting rid of your Xperia phone now that Xperia is gone.
Xperia is not gone yet. Even if Sony sells the division, we don't know what will change.
Why would we sell the phone just because of that?

O really is it!? Source!
It's been only rumors and you're acting as if anything conclusive has been said.
And even if Xperia is gone, so what. We're on XDA where we can make our own ROM's. Many of us payed +400$ for their devices, it's not as if we have another 400+ just laying around to buy another phone.
Ok so following your reasoning I should get rid of my Nokia 3210?
I was just wondering because there could be a lack of future updates/support and whatnot depending on how and where the division ends up. This is my first Android experience and don't want to mess with custom ROMs and stuff (at least for now).
doublefacepalm.jpg
No, of course not! I would not sell this phone as there's no better option from any other manufacturers at this format, and I really like the phone.
No reasons until it's working and specially if the community is still active on it. In my optinion one of the best phone ever.
Oh snap I best sell my house quick because the brick company has gone.. Doh!

Sony said the phone will get the Lollipop update, in addition an Xperia Z4 should be released (and the last one according to the rumor) that mean that for at a least a year updates should come. Then even if it is not updated to the next major release of Android (after Lollipop) and the community do not make a custom ROM it will still be fine with upcoming apps for another year or so. Also the Z3 uses widely spread components (Qualcomm SOC) so it should not be that are to adapt a custom ROM for it.
Apparently the community find nothing valuable in discussing this.
I personally find it very heartbreaking of this news from Sony.

heartbreaking, yes because Sony is the only one to make a phone like the Z3C but that news isn't a reason to change. The Z3C is or is not a good phone for you when you brought it.

That's exactly what I'm taking about. Sony is one of the few manufacturers who doesn't do much sh1t like curving screen/ultra saturated color/huge display which results in half day battery life. These crap are good for catching eyes and advertising. But still basically just pure crap for common use. And surprisingly those manufacturers are selling millions of cheap plastic crappie devices with marketing. That's the most heartbreaking part of this whole situation. I almost lost faith in humanity. Damn.

"WILL be getting rid of your Xperia phone NOW"
Hmm... I don't quite understand the future and present tense meant together in the same sentence.
Surely everyone WILL get rid of their phones at one point or another. Nothing lasts forever and I'm sure there will be many phone in the future that everyone of us will like better than the Z3C.
With the current technology and design available, the Z3C isn't combined of all the best. Weak construction with plastic frame, poor display quality, weak water proofing flaps and worst of all is Sony ecosystem bloatwares which have users constantly connected to Sony store while already being connected to Google store, for the same thing at the same price. The Z3C system size together with bloatwares is almost twice as large as vanilla Android. Another headache with DRM keys for the mediocre performance camera on TA partition when unlock the bootloader.
For the NOW, I would get rid of it ASAP if it wasn't rooted. I'm sure in a few months, there will be some better phones.
i would sooner get rid of my swimsuit supermodel rocket scientist girlfriend than this phone.
this is the first Android phone i've owned where i didn't feel a compelling reason to immediately slap a mod on or otherwise tinker with, especially after my experience with Samsung phones. (well, besides the volume of the loudspeaker, which i expect to fix after i root.) Sony's skin has some really useful, well though out touches, so i've left it stock. i have no issues with the camera, and no cracked glass or other manufacturing faults. and after all the plastic crap that is a typical Android phone, the industrial design is really refreshing and attractive. i like the walkman, movie, and album apps (again, much better than Samsung or HTC equivalents), and the BATTERY LIFE IS INSANE. not having to charge for four, five, six days? AWESOME.
I won't. Everything stock and im perfectly happy.

Mine is going for sure. As soon as S6 comes out (assuming no glaring faults in that)
Its an ugly little phone for starters, the construction choices are poor, glass is not cool. I would much prefer nexus 5/moto x plastic. mUch better.
Camera/camera software is terrible.
Battery is ... at best ok. Using it just as a phone, calls and texts and a bit of whatsapp. Its really good. Using anything else, games, maps etc its awful.
Screen... not bad. Amoled is better though.
Since the new root I have gone from I dont like it to its not a bad little thing. But its not enough.
Im not surprised they are pulling the pin to be honest.

Sorry to hear this, but are you sure you are not using an actual brick as phone?
If you have issues with games and maps (maps!) I think you should get your unit checked, might be that it's faulty. On battery life you don't have to take my word, just read any review site that you want and they will tell you that it's among the best (if not the best) that you can get now - get your device checked buddy!

Stick with Xperia Z3 or move to Nexus 6P?

Everything is in the title, really!
I've been toying with the idea of keeping my Z3 and getting a tablet, before realising that I'd never actually USE a tablet. As a result, I've come to the conclusion that I should just get a slightly bigger phone and meet my demands half way.
I've always liked the Nexus phones, previously had a Nexus 5 that I loved, despite the not-so-great battery life. I went for the Z3 after my wife got the Z1 compact, just because of the battery life, and I've not been disappointed. I always get two days battery life in normal use, and around six hours screen time consistently.
However, the Nexus 6P has definitely caught my attention. The screen size is pretty much what I'm looking for, the battery size appears to be pretty much the same, and of course it looks lovely!
So, my question, Nexus 6P owners, is it worth changing, based on my needs, or do I stick to what I have? I've heard the battery life isn't quite as good as what I'm used to!

Why not get a Z5 Premium? You would most likely get better battery life, camera and build quality all in a package that you are already used to with a bigger screen. Seems like a win-win to me.
I had a Z3 (which I do miss). The Nexus 6P is better in terms of updates, camera, speed, speakers, fingerprint scanner and ROMs/development if you're into that. Also, I get better cell reception with the 6P too, which could be due to band 12. The battery on the Z3 is better, but I have no problems getting through the day with my 6P, plus you have quick charging, so that's a plus.

It definitely is a nice phone. I really do find it interesting that despite the 6P being pretty superior in most regards, you still miss little things about the Z3!
I know the gold 6P is currently on sale in the UK, but I don't know if I could honestly drop the battery life in favour of the other things, despite the differences being fairly substantial!

I would wait and see what the Marshmallow update brings to the Z3.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I had the T Mobile Z3, which was better than the others but lagged with updates. The 6p is a better phone in many ways, but I miss the size, water resistance, battery life, and noise canceling of the Z3. I'd probably still have the Z3 if it was getting updates.
I have heard good things about the Marshmallow concept, so perhaps as you've both said, its worth hanging on until the update is released to see if I want to stick with it.
Thanks for the opinions and thoughts though, guys. Much appreciated.

At this point in time, I would wait. Then get the HTC M10. I really wish I'd waited, I had the understanding that it was going to be a mediatek chipset. How wrong was I, big battery, water proof, sd820, 32GB with ext SD, decent camera (hopefully) and those boom sound speakers.
This is kind of make or break for HTC , I think its going to be a beast. Development will be superb too as it always is with flagship HTC devices.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the 6P its a stellar device but I'd have waited for the M10 If I'd have known.
Have had a few Sony devices and I find them a bit boring. On paper they're great but they're just not for me. My mate has the Z5 which he loves but its exactly the same as the older devices going back to the z1.
I like their tablets though
PS: my apologies, the size might not be what you need. Unless they release a plus version?
Tablets are a funny sort, you don't think you'll use them but then do once you have one. Everything looks great on a tablet, HD games (made for tablet) movies, web browsing.. Coupled with a fold away keyboard you'd be forgiven for thinking you werent using a laptop.
I use citrix with work and on my prime with keyboard and touchpad it looks amazing.

I do like HTC phones, the last one I had was the One X, and apart from the (quite frankly) terrible battery, it was a really nice phone! I know a couple of people with the M9, and it is a nice phone. I do prefer Android more stock though, Sense is quite heavily modified compared to some other manufacturers.
I had a Samsung S3 too, that was also nice, but I really hate Touchwiz.
There's something really nice about stock!
Thanks for that though, I'll have a look at the M10 when that's released. I'm sure I'll find the sweet spot sooner or later. I did have a tablet (Microsoft Surface), but just never turned it on. Didn't see the point when I had a phone that did the same but on a smaller screen!
