When I got my phone it was on stock 4.4.4 and after flashing an older build and rooting at this point it is running fine and so I am wondering if there is any good reason to flash to the latest build. I read the safestrap doesn't work as well on 4.4.4. My only issue now is that the battery life of this s4 is not as good as my s3. If 4.4.4 would help my battery life then I would go for it but I have read, I think, that it has only made the battery life worse. that is my first question.
My second one is, now that I am rooted and soon to be on Net10 service, can I assume that I won't be getting OTA updates or that they won't work right if I do? Kies is useless because no matter what build I have installed it says I am up to date and can't initialize anyway. So will I have to just wait for the official Lollipop to be released for the s4 and then flash? thanks
Taking an update ir not is a personal matter. I recommend trying some ROMs. There Re plenty of choices and there will be ones with improved battery life. You can still uze Odin and stock image instead of OTA to get the latest firmware. Usually new stock release cimes with performance and battery improvement and bug fixes.

My S4 has MK6 (resulted from the 4.3 update OTA as I pulled it out of the box), rooted and TWRP installed.
Currently running Skyfall 4.4.2 ROM. Battery life seems HORRIBLE and the vibration is VERY week (with each ROM i've tried).
Also running the Zerolemon 7500mah Battery that doesn't seem to fully charge, but drains quickly.
The question is that if I take 4.4.2 from samsung mobile's site and load via Odin, will it lock up the phone from being rooted and
installing custom recovery again?
So far, I"m unhappy with the S4..... but it's my own fault for rooting and testing ROMs, I suppose..... but that's all I ever did with my
S3 with very positive results.
Suggestions and help guys???
Thanks

The sammobile may change your bootloader, if you stay on 4.3 your bootloader will stay MK6 which means you can use a 4.4.2 rom or 4.3 rom, if you update the bootloader to NC1 you will only be able to load 4.4.2 roms. You don't mention what baseband your on so I will assume it is MK6. You may see some battery improvement going to NC1 modem (flashed through odin PC ... twice.. you will see in the instructions) I am sure there are some near stock roms out there for 4.4.2 ... Mapleleaf is close to stock. As for battery life, it depends on what you have running on the phone. I can get 2 days on mine if I don't fool around too much. urrently 2 days 4 hours 37 minutes, screen on time 1 hour 23 minutes... 40% left... I turn off all data after 10pm and don't have gps running. You can check what is using the battery with wake lock detector, maybe you have a something that is not allowing the phone to go to deep sleep.
Thank you! Valuable info! Yes, baseband is MK6...... I'll try loading the 4.4.2 from sammboile and see what happens.........
Will post results.
Any suggestions on other ROMs for our Canadian S4? I like TW ... Can't stand the look of AOSP

Try Mapleleaf .. its 4.4.2 tw pretty much stock except the kernel I have been running it for over a month now, no reboots or issues.... probably want to update your baseband to NC1, won't affect your bootloader, just modem. It is important to follow the instructions with PC odin (take off auto reboot flag) and wait for it to finish. I flashed it twice as the instructions suggest doing so.
Hello everyone.
I've just installed Sweet ROM V4 MJ7 and I wanna update to Stock 4.4
So its rooted and CWM is installed.
Here's my question...
Should I just put 4.4 stock to Odin and install or should I do sth else?
I know, this question could be so frustrating for someone but it's my first NOTE and i dont wanna mess it.
Also, is it worth to update from 4.3 to 4.4.2 (N9005XXUGNG1)
Im afraid of this knox 2.0
Thanks for help.
Yes..it is the way it should be using odin to install stock firmware. This is gonna be fine bcoz u are going to 4.4.2 unless you are downgrading which is too dangerous.
Just tell me my friend now if it is worth to upgrade to 4.4.2?
For my personal prefence, I like to be up to date all the time. So I would stay with latest update. But some people prefer to stay with 4.3 bcoz of better battery life or other wifi issues. But all bugs have been fixed in these days. So I guess the main reason to stay with 4.3 is just bcoz of battery life. I cant tell exactly how much difference of battery since I just upgraded to 4.4.2 as soon as I got this. So I cant notice 4.3 that much in less than a day. ?? go for it. What is bothering you! You are holding Note 3 and life isnt worth if u don't stay up to date.
Hello,
I use an unrooted S4 and there is an OTA-Update for 4.4.4 and I keep asking myself if it is a good idea to install it or better stay with 4.4.3?
I heard some rumors about better battery and performance - but I also heard from problems with these both. Hmmm...
I have no branding, no root and now I'd be very happy about your advice.
Is the update 4.4.4 a good one or should I stay with 4.4.2?
PS: Is there a way to save the firmware I'm currently using in case I want to flash it back?
I guess there are lots of ways, thats why I'm asking about one of the best ways to safe the old firmware.
Thank you so much for your held.
RockyPete
I think you can do a backup with kies. Not sure, though
..Who can tell my something about the update 4.4.4? Would you say its good or better stay at 4.4.2?
Hey everyone, I've been completely out of the loop for about a year now as far as updating and rooting is concerned, so if somebody could help me out I'd really appreciate it! I have a rooted Verizon galaxy S5 with Kit Kat 4.4.2, and it seems like Lollipop is now available to the S5. I haven't gotten any updates from Verizon or any other source for my phone for about a year now because I wanted to keep root and I know that updating often kills root. I literally disabled/froze all the Verizon updater apps with Titanium backup.
So what I want to know is what is the newest android version I can update to and still keep root, and what is the process of updating to ensure that I still maintain root permissions? Also, I use the xposed framework, so will that continue to work? I might have a custom recovery, I'm not sure but I can check if it matters.
Thanks so much for anyone's help.

Thanks man, would you recommend updating to lollipop? Is it a better version of Android in your opinion?
For me, it's much better, for others it's worse
I've switched back to KK to test, and I lasted 10 minutes before flashing back to Lollipop, much smoother, faster, and better looking IMO
Hello,
like the topic name says, should I update my phone to Lollipop?
I've read on older topics there are a lot of issues with stock 5.0.1, like lower battery life, lags and other stuff.
There have probably been a few OTA updates that might have fixed those issues?
What are you're guys experience so far with stock 5.0.1?
I'm still on 4.4.2 btw, so far it works great.
If you have i9505. Is recommend updating and flashing @Albe95 S6 Port which is the best current rom for S4

What about stock 5.0.1, yours and other peoples experience?
I just got the phone, so I'd like to keep it stock for now.
No and never update anything your phone in any way!
Update = Problems. Lollipop already proved that.
Hope you have not yet updated !
I haven't updated yet.
So I guess I should stay on 4.4.2 then.
Stay where you are. If you want lollipop go custom or gpe.
I too is still on 4.4.2, might try a custom lollipop

Stay where you are ,Lollipop has battery drain!!!
Thanks for all your input on this guys, I really appreciate it.
Hopefully Samsung will fix it through future updates.

Don't count on Samsung fixing anything in a timely fashion. At this point it's highly unlikely the S4 will ever see Android 5.1.1, especially if Samsung can't even be bothered to update the Google Play Edition S4 to 5.1.1 despite every other GPE phone already receiving it.
If you want a stock-ish custom Android 5.x ROM for your S4, there are at least three decent ones in the I9505 Development section: Imperium ROM, Lollirom, and Albe95's S6 port. Currently I'm using the S6 port as it's the only one of the three that is running Android 5.1.1.
BUMP'ing my old thread a month later because I don't need to create a new one.
Same question, there probably have been a lot of OTA updates after the first 5.0.1 came out on the S4,
is it worth now updating to 5.0.1?
Have the battery issues/lags/whatever problems been fixed?
I'm still on 4.4.2 and I'm tempted to update but I don't wanna get any problems.
The looks and feel of 5.0.1 are nothing if in expense of performance/battery.
Thank you for your time.

No, don't do it. I tried recently. Still crappy (clean install). So I'm back and will stay on KK for this devise. Faster, more reliable and fewer bugs.
DON'T, as others said stay at kitkat or older ,but if need lollipop so badly one of the following (both requires updating to lollipop)=
1.CyanogenMod or cm based ROMs(for touchwiz haters,half stable,recommended=CyanogenMod itself)
2.touchwiz based roms(for touchwiz fans or the people who are trying to be original, sometimes fully stable, sometimes half stable, recommended=able's s6 port or able's lollirom)
