Thought I'd post my experience on here just because I know a lot of us are switching over and I must have gone through fifteen different threads to figure out how to get my data, talk, and text working. To start off I bought a T-Mobile nano sim and just plugged it straight into my droid thinking it would all be gravy...nope. This is exactly what I had to do: First, go into your mobile network settings and change to LTE/UTMS/GSM. Second, change your (Select Network) to GSM only. Third, create an APN that is as follows: NAME;T-Mobile, APN; epc. tmobile. com, MMSC; ht tp:// mms . msg. eng. t-mobile . com/mms/wapenc . APN Type; default, mms, supl APN Protocol; ip4/ip6. LEave everything else alone. trust me this is the most reliable way to go about doing the switch over and the data is fast, plenty fast. The phone info . apk app does work but for the ultra its not needed so don't worry with it. HAPPY SAVINGS all you DROID LOVERS.
Thanks for the help. I have unlimited Verizon with my bootloader unlocked, but I have issues with good service here where I live and work with Verizon. T-mobile may be better, so I am considering trying it out soon. I am going to test TMO for 7 days with their free program and see. If it works, I may just follow these directions and use my Droid Maxx.
Jeff
How ur work on gsm? If I out mines on gsm internet won't work. Umts is the only way mines work. I get h+ but at times its slow. Worst playing games
P.s am on metro PCs same crap lol T-Mobile all my settings r from T-Mobile

I picked up a Droid Maxx XT1080M (Not the ultra, but they seem so.. similar....) which was unlocked.
I popped a NanoSIM into it, rebooted, and it took a minute but the device figured out to auto switch to the GSM/UMTS/LTE side of the baseband. After that the only thing I needed to do was add the T-Mobile LTE APN.
I'd check your APN and make sure it's on fast.t-mobile.com. From what I've noticed is that when I boot it up, and WIFI is off, if I am to start browsing it goes from E (edge) to H (HSPA) to LTE in about ... 2-3 minutes of browsing/using data. Then it sticks on LTE. This is not always the case as I've rebooted a few times tonight without it bumping down to EDGE.
Getting 43mbps down and 33 mbps up on LTE, and 6down/2up on UMTS/HSPA. In Seattle... This device hits the sweet spots for T-Mobile LTE bands with 1700/2100. We'll miss out on their 1900 build-out, but should still have HSPA+ on those other bands anyway.
One odd message I get after every reboot is The SIM card is from an unknown source. does not seem to affect anything. Anyone know if this is normal? I've not seen this error before on other unlocked devices.
I am on metro, I don't have that issues at all. I pop in Sim, did a apn n wallah 4g LTE n every work fine took me a hot minute to figure out how to get LTE to work.
The Sim car error is Cuz its a Verizon fone. It doesn't effect the fone at all. Once we get root n we get to flash I know we won't c that no more.

Sadly, my phone seems to have a borked radio.
What happened? So I popped in T-Mobile SIM card, and calling and texting is a charm. (Except for the Unknown SIM issue, of course.) I then found out that I was getting NO data after a factory reset. So then I looked to downgrade OS version, blah blah, flashed radio, did fastboot config carrier, so on and so forth. No joy. Sigh...
EDIT: Just realized I revived the topic...

Verizon has changed something in the system part of the most recent ROMs to prevent t-mobile use. I had the same issues. For some, I could bypass the block by removing some of the CDMA references in build.prop. For the most recent Verizon ROM, nothing I tried worked.
Luckily, I am unlocked. Moved originally to a ported Moto X ROM, and then to CM12, and everything works fine there.
That's odd, I'm on the latest build and have 0 issues with Tmobile.
I just plugged my T-Mobile nano sim in last night and used the instructions on this thread and a few others around the internet to get T-Mobile 4GLTE or HSPA+ to work. I can text, make calls, and I get all the Edge (shown as an "E") data i want, but It is way to slow to be useful. I have tried it on both my droid maxx phones (one 2013 - 32gb, and one 2014 - 16gb). Both are on latest system version 24.3.7. Any other advice to make data work decent? I can get NO 4G or HSPA+
Does tmo say you have wcdma or LTE access where you are.
I am having the same issues after FDR and data wouldn't work anymore. In my area I am LTE so the droid ultra that worked well in the last 4 months on T-Mobile, I think it is a software problem.
Yes it is software problem. If you can get your phone rooted and bootloader unlocked then reflash the rom it works perfectly. I get LTE on tmobile on the CM rom no problem.
I run LTE just fine.. All I needed to do was add T-Mobiles APN to my phone..

Hello all,
I bought a Verizon s5 on eBay for $250 the other day. From my reading other forums, I thought that I could just pop my straight talk sim in and it would work.
Apparently that is not the case.
After some reading, I used towel root and was able to get the hidden menus to work , but I really don't know what bands that I should try to enable?
I have a straight talk sim that is set up for an att phone (works perfectly in my S4).
Thus far the phone doesn't recognize my sim at all. It just has a circle where the signal indicator would be.
The phone arrived with a apalachian wireless sim installed and it gets full signal with that sim.
I checked the esn with swappa and it appears to be good.
Any insight would be great. I'm new to all of this and really don't know what I'm doing.

What APN are you using?
I didnt bother changing the apn because it doesnt recognize my sim. It just has a circle where the signal indicator should be.
Global mode should work fine. The issue might have something to do with the Verizon system not recognizing the ST sim card. Even though the S5 is unlocked, you might have to call VZW to see if it's a privisioning issue. You can check ESN with them too because it could be bad. Good luck and post back if/when you fine the answer.
I am running the same exact setup. Works great for me. Including mms. U should have done a factory reset before rooting. Either way. ....make sure it's in global mode under settings more networks/ network mode. Then download using WiFi since u don't have data yet, straight talk data settings from Google play store. Hit home button open data settings, follow instructions. Good luck.
Hi everyone,
I've been a lurker of this site for a little while now, so thank you all for your productivity and guides (If I can get this to work, I will create a guide myself to share ) I recently purchased a Brand New Sprint Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P) with the hopes of unlocking it and using it on Straight Talk AT&T's network. I've made incredible progress so far, but I feel like I'm missing something. Up to this point I've spent countless hours online reading about this device and troubleshooting it.
Current Issue: Phone will not contact any GSM network. I have the sim card in and it just says no service. I know this is only on GSM networks because I disabled all CDMA bands using DFS. All AT&T bands are active and I believe the Galaxy S5 supports almost every band available. APN Settings are set correctly.
Things I have done / tried:
Using Cyanogenmod13 KLTE ROM, Cyanogenmod12.1 SPR ROM, Unofficial CM13 SPR ROM. Also, tried using a "stock?" 4.4.4 ROM that was a little glitchy, but worked nonetheless (tried using SSU.apk here, but afterwards it seemed to sim-lock my phone by giving "Invalid SIM"
Phone unlocked with IDoneApps (no more invalid sim) IDoneApps says its for International and Domestic.
I paid for a Network Access Code and registered the phone with Straight Talk and attempted to transfer the service over (not sure if this is necessary as I am using a GSM SIM, which still works fine in my other phone, perfect service)
Also, on the stock ROM it keeps trying to "Activate the device" and won't be able to. Sometimes the phone goes into roaming and when I call it sends me to Verizon Wireless Customer Service (not sure why on this)
Phone will receive service fine when set to Automatic or CDMA LTE. If I attempt to call a phone I will get "Your account is not authorized to make calls to this phone number" with a mans voice.
-Do I need to do something with Sprint to go forward?
SOLVED IT:
Had to enable the "GCF Setting" on the phone.
YouTube Video: "How to enbale GFC settings on any Samsung Galaxy " - This guide worked flawlessly.
Now all I need to do in order to have perfect service on this SM-G900P on AT&T is to enable the rest of the AT&T LTE Bands on it.
Hey, I know this is necro'ing but I hope you are still around.....
I'm in the same situation as this post right now...I have have a SM-G900P (Sprint Galaxy S5), now activated through Straight Talk, but my data doesn't work when using CM13. I was wondering more what you mean by your GCF settings and maybe some quick tips to get 4G/LTE while on CM (Preferably 13+). Stock Rom I get LTE just fine, but for some reason it gives me this *FUGLY* Creedo mvno app suite when I do a fresh restore of stock rom, and just the whole touchwhiz thing sucks in general. I'd much prefer CM or any other custom ROM that cuts out the BS but gives me data.

no worries about necro'ing a thread, im not sure why some folks get bent out of shape about it :/ anyways, what service provider are you using via straight talk? they use all of the major 4 (vzw, at&t, tmob and sprint)
the basic answer to your question is APN settings. did you ever have data working with str8 talk? if so, your gcf settings dont need to be fiddled with, if not, then you have some tinkering to do. not at all difficult really, just some button presses

Well, the only band that identifies when I actually have a working data connection (tops I get is 3G) says Sprint. So I think that's who they're routing me through. I'm not a total rookie when it comes to this, but I don't know how to change the radio bands outside of what apps like Radio Switcher do (which actually just gives me a short cut to quasi-service mode settings in CM).
I get the cell data to read LTE on stock, but it's gross touchwiz and it never seems to get GOOD signal, two bars of LTE was the most in Milwuakee suburbs, an area I'd assume would be swimming in 4G/LTE. I'd much rather use CM for the customization (or any more "purer" android ROMS). If I select CMDA auto PRL I get a solid 3G and all voice/text/data services work. But any other option that includes LTE drops my data entirely.
Edit: I just realized I repeated myself lol. I've made a few posts on various forums about this. Kind of forgotten what info I've provided where. Sorry for the redundancy.

Ok, I reread your op and it said that you're using at&t. Are you sim unlocked? If not, Mr @stifilz, do you think you could hook this guy up? He has a proven track record of unlocking S5s
Just a heads up I'm not OP, that's @aventurer. I just happened to find a very similar situation. Probably changes your train of thought but for what it's worth in my situation, the phone sim came from Sprint originally, and the Straight Talk people said they use that sim to connect to the LTE bands.
I started flashing custom roms this week, because I was bored. I have tried several CrDroid which I really like, TruPureXMM, and Dirty Unicorns. No matter what I do I cannot get 4G, I get 3G no problem. I'm using the verizon CDMA LTE sim, and 4G worked perfectly before I started flashing roms.
Is there anything I can do? I have tried searching, but haven't found any answers
Check and make sure your APN settings are correct.
As far as I can tell they are. it imported APN settings from the sim card. Do you have the correct APN settings?

You did enter in the 4g LTE code that came on its own separate gray card right? If so, call em up and have them switch your account over to the AT&T sim card that you should also have. That's what I'm running and its never not had LTE.
I don't have the other sims, plus AT&T sucks around here. I haven't called them, because they need you to have another phone, and unless I'm at work I don't normally have access to a phone. Maybe I can go by my brother's today, since it's my only day off this week.
I've had the same problem as well. I've moved around to some many ROMs but i found one that works http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/rom-resurrectionremix-v5-6-2-t3301393
I'm downloading now, and hoping it works for me too
just another waste of time
Even going back stock I'm only getting 3G. I guess i'm going to have to call stupid Straight Talk
Have you made sure that the radio is set to LTE/CDMA/GSM auto (PRL)? To check type *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer and hit phone information. If it does not have the right setting under "Set preferred network type:" it can cause this issue.
Greetings fellow telephony addicts - purchased a Boost Mobile Moto E w/5.1 (xt1526) because of apparent ease of ul'ing bl and rooting. True enough --
However since then I've been trying to get the device to allow use of a GSM SIM (USA/att.) Recently did it on a vzw (xt1528) no problem following instructions found here bit the xt1526 has beaten me senseless, going so far as to install cm13 in a totally illogical move. It works beautifuly, if you don't need calls or mms. Searched the crap out of the E forums with a couple of tips that did not pan out.
Anyone give me any hints /tips or even a nay as in "you dummy you can't to that!"

Boost / sprint xt1526 are locked so that us domestic GSM Sims are not recognized. To my knowledge, no one here has yet gotten around this. I switched from a sprint branded one to a USCellular, which is fully SIM unlocked out of the box, bootloader unlockable, and supports att LTE. Using it right now with my postpaid ATT SIM

Only thing I can think of is to flash the RADIO from a variant that isn't SIM locked and seeing if that works. It's a risky experiment tho... it could definitely brick the device in terms of ever being able to connect to a cell tower again.
Closest match is the USC 5.1 stock ROM's radio, which has the same model number XT1526, and is CDMA compatible, but that phone is also known to work on domestic GSM networks.
Double Thanks - Phone is useless to me as is so it's worth a go. Will report the results here.

Weird - I installed the complete USC 5.1 stock ROM - Everything seems to work fine, but the system version and the broadband version coming up as Sprint. US cellular is not a Sprint MVNO I don't think, but it seems to be kind of a hybrid in terms of networks? No option for switching the network to GSM/LTE in the settings that I can find.
Not sure what I'm going to try next...

Did you flash the Radio/Modem too? If not, that's why the baseband comes up as Sprint.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*, phone info, change "CDMA/LTE" to "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)". If you can't do that, follow the 5.1 instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/how-to-verizon-moto-e-2015-gsm-network-t3098953 (change the 9 to a 10 for LTE/GSM/CDMA)
This will allow you to change the phone to LTE/GSM/CDMA mode.
Isn't the NON-HLOS.bin file the modem file? I did the keyboard commands and got the phone info and was able to change it but it didn't change anything, live or after a reboot - same thing. did the adb shell commands and the same
thing, cellular network settings grayed out. I put back the sprint SIM that came with the kit and it was fine and the network settings are available...hmmmm.
I greatly appreciate the suggestions. I'm gonna leave the battlefield and get dinner or my wife will call me mean geeky names

Putting this thread to rest
Spent the last couple of days flashing the E with rom after rom, particularly of GSM phones, ATT, TM, etc and their respective radio files. And not to my surprise the phone works fine with every one of then regardless of model XTxxxx anything, phone runs flawless, except for the network of course, which always remains Sprint.
I have to conclude, unless someone can prove otherwise, that the phone network part is either embedded in the chipset as hardware or a combination of hardware and software, or the modem files are somehow protected from being overwritten.
Was interesting and educational.
Thanks to those who gave ideas or suggestions, especially you Mr. President

Ok –*question. If I put Cyanogenmod 13 (Lollipop) onto the Moto E 1526 (U.S. Cellular version) –*will GSM work on it? I need to buy my grandma a GSM phone who doesn't live in the States & I want the GSM card to be easy plug in play for her.
I know that the U.S. Cellular version is the best because it is unlocked for GSM as well, but I believe XT1526's default radio is CDMA.
Maybe I should get a GSM sim card here in the States and switch it to GSM on CM13 (if this is possible) –*that way all my grandmother has to do is put the sim card in without any hassle.

The device does do funky things with the radio on first boot on a new rom. I've run several CM based marshmallow roms. There's no real issue, but you need to go through the non-adb method (using the network app) to get GSM working on every new clean flash. Typically this means pulling the GSM SIM before initial boot (when I don't, the radio keeps cycling through modes making initial setup very difficult), do setup on Wi-Fi, turn off radio, insert SIM, then do the process.
I definitely would not give the device to a non tech savvy person before doing this on a clean flash. Once it's done, you can remove and reinsert Sims without issue.

switch to settings -> cellular networks
Pull down notifications-> Airplane mode ON
Network App -> GSM / LTE (close app)
switch to settings
verify 4g (I always click on it, still shows CDMA)
NEtwrok app -> Turn on Radio
Settings -> click on CDMA -> Select 4G
Airplane Mode OFF"

Yep, you got it. Actually, I don't think it's too picky about the order of operations as described in that thread - I've done this many times without referring to the thread so have likely done it "wrong" at times, and it still works. Basically, radio off (either via airplane mode or network app), switch modes, radio back on.
Just don't clean flash a rom without either access to Wi-Fi, or a locally installable copy of the network app.

Hey .. i am in Karachi Pakistan ...
i have seen this phone workingperfectly with gsm network until someone makes a factory Data reset ..
still not found out the solution ..
the devices arrived from china in working condition ..
FYI - US Cellular was bought out by sprint last year, so they are now a sprint mvno.
Did you try flashing the stock 6.0 ROM?
I know this has other threads, but I wanted to post something that helped me get VoLTE working that none of the other threads addressed.
Quick background: new to TMobile, new to the 1+ brand. Rooted, stock. I could get LTE, but I kept getting kicked to roaming AT&T H+ or 3G, couldn't get VoLTE, and very slows speeds even when on LTE. Tried every APN combo, network settings reset, factory phone reset, tried every *#*#4636#*#* preferred network type...nothing. Chatted in to 1+ asking if I could speak to technical support. The response was the only way to fix it was to factory reset (which I had already done) and downgrade OOS. The newest OOS has the T-Mobile optimizations, so downgrading makes no sense! Needless to say, the whole 30 min chat was a waste of time and just a bunch of weak canned responses with no attempt to really help or figure out how to escalate me to someone with some knowledge of the APNs and settings needed.
Out of desperation, or since I had tried every other possible trick, I went under my T-Mobile SIM, Network Operators, and toggled Auto Choose and manually chose TMobile 4G.
Boom, full bands 4, 12 and VoLTE, and normal speeds! Carrier aggregation is even working sometimes.
I don't know why Auto Choose doesn't know how to grab 4G permanently, but everything is working!
Does anyone have any idea why this fixed it? Since I choose 4G, will I lose my ability to get 3G in rural areas? I don't feel like there was much info on how VoLTE is provisioned on the phone.
What's everyone's experience with the preferred network settings? I'm currently in LTE/UMTS, and I don't have the LTE/GSM option that apparently everyone else has...?
Also, does everyone else have as sporadic speeds as I do? One moment it'll be 40 down, next it'll be 6? I know it has to do with bands, but should there be a way to even that out a little?
Sidenote: I really like 1+ mentality about rooting and software, since I have to have a rooted phone, but this experience really soured my first impression. Plus their 1+5 is a major letdown to me. I don't think I'll purchase anymore 1+ products.
Feel free to correct any misinformation in my post.
I also have noticed when I try streaming, webpages or speedtests the little LTE+ carrier aggregation kicks in to combine band 4 and 12 and I get pretty good speeds. See screenshot
My speeds do definitely vary on Tmobiles network. Isn't an issue for me, everything streams fine, also i haven't had an issue with VOLTE since I got the phone in February..
I noticed when I'm in a roaming area, instead of roaming now, I completely lose service. I believe this is because I manually selected TMobile 4G as my operator instead of auto, which would allow the phone to jump to AT&T. Any ideas?
So still having problems, but only when traveling. If I have network operator on "auto" it'll select AT&T roaming, but then it'll just stick then and never switch back to TMobile, even in full strength band 4 or 12 areas. I have to reboot, and toggle auto for it to grab a T-Mobile signal. Very irritating. This also kicks the phone off VoLTE, and I've yet to get it back. Not sure if this is TMobile or the phone's fault. Tried everything I can think of. Any ideas?

Excuse my ignorance, but what would a new SIM accomplish, technically speaking that is?
FYI, my wife's HTC 10 does the same thing. That would make two bad SIMs unlikely?

I've had same problem as yours, I went to T-Mobile store and told them what was going on. They switched my SIM card and problem fixed. I was told because my SIM was too old (4 years at least) that's why i was having such issue.

Gotcha thanks, I'll give it a try! What's weird is our SIMs are only weeks old....

That's what I've been thru and got fixed. Hopefully it'll work for you too
New SIM, no change
This phone has the features I want, and T-Mobile has the speeds I want, but this is frustrating to be kicked to roaming and no VoLTE....

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you. I attached couple of screenshots just to show you that it's been working good for me after I switched SIM card.
Edit: have you tried to create a new APN instead of using the default APN?
Edit 2: I can show you my APN if you want
Sorry, must have not been clear. I can get LTE, just not automatically after going into a roaming area. It just sticks on AT&T roaming until I manually go back in and select TMobile 4G. The problem with that is when I do need roaming to work, it won't because I have TMobile 4G manually selected.
Another problem is that I can't get VoLTE to stay very long, in fact i haven't had it for a couple days, despite me being in a very strong LTE area.
I appreciate your help
Edit: yes, if I could see your APN that'd be great!

Just create a new APN exactly as mine and see if it works
Hmm yeah that's the one I have too....
Btw, maybe I just needed to wait,, but VoLTE is working again, and it's reporting the correct IMEI (it wasn't before but TMobile told me that wasn't a big deal...I beg to differ because now my TMobile app is working whereas before it wasn't) Fingers crossed the new SIM did the trick! I'll know tomorrow when I commute to work and it starts roaming whether it'll reacquire T-Mobile and VoLTE
Quick update: I definitely have noticed an improvement in jumping off AT&T roaming back onto TMobile LTE. AND VoLTE is now sticking. But... I'm inclined to think it's something related to me not having my second Verizon SIM in. I have a company work number on a Verizon SIM that enables me to text and call from that number. Obviously data doesn't work but that doesn't bother me since I have TMobile unlimited on my personal SIM. When I insert my Verizon SIM in the second slot, my IMEI number changes in the testing menu, but not my settings info! What the heck? The IMEI number identifies the phone and shouldn't change...I thought? Very confused why part of my phone retains the correct IMEI and the testing changes. I instantly lose VoLTE and my TMobile app fails to authenticate.
What is going on???
UPDATE:
I popped my Verizon SIM in again (slot 1) and it's reporting the xx...15 IMEI (correct one on my T-Mobile account) and the T-Mobile SIM (slot 2) then drops to xx...07! I'm so confused! I thought the IMEI is NOT supposed to change because it identifies the device?? The ICCID is the SIM number? Why is Verizon SIM screwing this up?
