Security Warning - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

After some failed attempts to flash earlier builds so that I could use towelroot, I finally installed the build ending with fnb1. This seemed to put my phone, which doesn't have a sim card right now, back to good working order except for one thing. I keep getting constant security warnings that something has done an unauthorized action. When I long press on the warning and then click on app info, it takes me to Knox. Disabling that does not good since it comes right back on once you leave it. The build that I just flashed is called a rootable build. Is this why Knox is unhappy, should I try to root it?
Does anyone have an idea as to find out why this is happening or better yet to get rid of it? thanks.

Yes, try to root it. I believe when your rooting it'll give you the option to disable knox

You'll have to unroot. But see this guide on how to get root on different versions. If I were in your shoes I'd ota to nj4, 4.4.4 then root using the guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56453100

actually that is what I was trying to do when I soft bricked my phone. I think where I goof up was the initial flash to nb1. You have to go back to an older build in order to use towelroot. but the file I tried to flash, which was the one he had a link to, was a lot smaller than the ones that actually worked for me. Anyway, if Knox is unhappy I am wondering if it will not let me update to lollipop when it comes to my phone anyway. Got to something though because I don't want this warning popping up all the time, thanks

Root Now or later

Should i root now or later? Why i ask is because if i do root now will a ota update come out and brick my phone or should i just wait till a rom comes and root then flash it?
Please help im a flashoholic stop me while you can. Can't have this powerful device in my hand without root
I'm wanting to root mine but I'm going to wait until we can get custom recovery and roms. It won't be long I would imagine. I do wonder if we'll get an ota soon because of the call quality issue.
I'm gonna wait myself. I feel your pain though. I did read that the international version has had 2 upgrades already that supposedly made the wifi, phone reception, & battery life better. From what I read anyway. It was in a thread on here. Plus there seems to be a lot of problem after rooting posts in the Q&A section. I figure better safe than sorry.

Why would you want it overclocked? Phone runs fine on the quad core snapdragon processor. Overclocking (half of the time) leads to some sort of instability. It heats your phone up like a stove because you basicly gave your phone ritilin. And don't even get me started on the battery...
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
There is no reason to overclock. This phone flies and 6 hours of screen time on a charge is ridiculous as well. Just root and get it over with. It is simple to do. Just follow the directions to a T.
I delayed a few days and need not have. Procedure is straightforward and not hard.
It's easy to root the only disadvantage is wiping everything out.

OTA cant just be put on your phone. You have to accept the update to be flashed. So rooting has nothing to do with it.
You can always freeze SDM.apk and that will prevent it. But again, Verizon Updater app just notifies you that an OTA is available.
just root now no issues whatsoever with mine during or after root and overclock!?!? what do you want its a 2.3 ghz quadcore sd 800 and you want more!?!? this phone is like butter in anything and everything fully loaded with 100+ apps i see zero reasons to overclock
Thank you so much guys, one more question to ask. If i root it does it trigger anything that shows root like the unlock logo when booting like (custom)

It does not trip knox. You remove the custom logo with Wanan Xposed -> Security Hacks -> Fake System Status.
And you can always restore back to stock.

Yep, as soon as I got it. I didn't want to wait around and get things set up and then root later and have to set them all up again
I entertained the idea of giving stock a try but about 30 seconds of the default DPI and VZW bloat put an end to that.

The side effects are that you can remove a feature, or a dependency of a feature that you want. That's why I froze them with Titanium Backup; easy to just defrost is something acts weird.
airmaxx23 posted this list of the apps he removed without any problems.
Rooting with the current method will wipe your device. So, until a method comes along that doesn't wipe your device, it's best to do it sooner than later, so you have less stuff to restore and re-download.
Also. Who knows when VZW will push out a patch. Best to root and disable the APK that looks for OTAs before you start getting annoying update popups.
The root method we have no is dead easy, and simple to follow. Takes all of about 5 minutes and you're finished. Very easy and hassle free.

There is no way at this time and probably never will be because jcase is not going to try to find a way.
What did you do that you lost root? Others are reporting that they kept root when they updated.
I was stupid and restored 4.4 without checking if I still had root. Had to restore because I uninstalled some bliatware and the update wouldn't take. So I'm stranded without root forever?

OK, just so I understand, you did a factory reset to restore to 4.4 and then were unrooted and took the 4.4.2 OTA?
As for forever, well, who knows maybe Jcase can be persuaded to work on it, but he still has to find a way even if he were so inclined. As of now, once you upgrade to the 4.4.2 bootloader, no one has a way to downgrade it to 4.4. And since Slap My Moto relies on downgrading 4.4. to the post camera 4.2.2, there is no way to root 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader.
The sale on the Dev Eds is still on until tomorrow. You can always get root with a Dev Ed. You could sell your current phone to help pay for the Dev Ed.

safestrap ROM of 164.55.2?
So is there any interest in creating a rooted safestrap ROM of 164.55.2 (i.e. similar to the previous 4.4 release: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/108826-romsafestrapxt1060-stock-rooted-vzw-140455-kitkat/ )
Or does 4.4.2 break the ability to do Recovery boot -> R/W system access? (which the current safestrap 4.4 ROM still relies on to write to system)
So if I root now (4.4.0) and take the ota to 4.4.2 , will I be able to keep the root? I don't necessarily need it, I would just like TB and X-Posed. Bit scared of loosing the warranty on this phone though.

It worked for me. The only setback from 4.4 root is that if you hard reboot you'll need to install Xposed framework and soft reboot to get it to stick. So worst case is you have to reboot twice if you do a hard reboot. TiBu works regardless.
If you worried about the warranty then you shouldn't root the non dev edition.

***need help rooting***

What's up everyone, i'm new to the site and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me root my galaxy note 3. I've tried rooting in the past and failed terribly. I tried on a sprint gs3 and a verizon note 2, and i almost bricked both of them. So if someone with a lot of experience would help root my phone and install a custom rom, it would be greatly appreciated. As far as the type of rom, i could careless about appearance...i'm all about performance and battery life. So basically, i want a rom that "overclocks" my processor and removes bloatware and unnecessary apps. I'll take instructions on how to do it but i'd rather someone remotely control my pc [teamviewer] to help. I'll even paypal you like $5 for helping me. Thanks in advance!
I *would* help you, but I'm having issues rooting as well. I'm no where near new to it, been doing it since my HTC Fuze way back when. There are a couple of ways to root, Vroot, will pretty much root anything android and there is Kingo. I would give you links to both, but its not allowed, but you can do a quick google search and find them and info about them. If you're on the MJE build, I was successful with both methods, but I managed to cause a few issues when I was rooted with Kingo and had to Odin back to stock.
You need kingo 1.1.8 and safestrap. Both are one button operations. I rooted and had the safestrap installed and the modified twrp recovery in less than 3 minutes. Kingo 1.2 had a faulty script and causing errors.

Obviously since the bootloader is locked down tight, if you want a custom rom, you need to use safestrap.
You need to download safestrap apk file from hashcode's website, open it, grant root permission, and install recovery.
Once you install recovery you can reboot to recovery right from the safestrap app, then create and activate rom-slot-1
Once active, you can flash/install your ROM.zip file (I would recommend Hyperdrive or Jelly Beans) and reboot...that's pretty much it in a nutshell, its relatively easy
Needing some help with rooting as well. Instead of making a new thread I figured I'd hijack this one

Thanks, finally got the download. All 1.1.8 links were leading to 1.2 download, had to use a mirror download to get 1.1.8.
Starting root now, hope it doesnt brick! Before I start...I guess I should ask, will rooting and going to a custom ROM fix my battery drain issues? Since the 4.3 update I get about 6 hours of battery life while not using my phone at except to turn the screen on for 10 sec to check the battery level.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. I have a note 3 and 1.1.8 worked for me.
Are you sure it's 1.1.8? I tried many times and downloaded 1.2even thoughit said1.1.8 and finally found 1.1.8 from a user on xda. If you need I can upload the correct version. But as previously stated you can find the most up to date safe strap on the note 3 board. Install the app press install recovery and every time your phone boots it will ask continue or recovery. Make a backup of stock and restore to any slot you want If you want to do stock rooted or select any slot and flash any rom (make sure it's for the Verizon note 3 because with a locked bootloader you cannot flash kernels) I'm currently running neon rom and with moderate usage I'm getting almost 3 days on a single charge. I find wifi downloading I can destroy 40 percent battery in about 2 hours though. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

You have to make sure you turn off antivirus. For me that meant turning off avg, Windows Defender and some other stuff I found it. Make sure you have developer options on USB debugging, screen stay on, and for some reason it seems like it helped to turn on unknown sources in your security settings on your phone. Sometimes it took me unplugging the USB and plugging it back in a few times in order for it to work but I just did it myself last week and making sure I did those things allowed me to do this pretty easily and reliably

4.4.4 OTA update with root

Heya. I have a rooted verizon note 3. I see i can get the 4.4.4 ota update. So i uninstalled root via SuperSU. I get an error trying to do the ota update. Probably not a good idea to take the update. I'd wait until our trusty devs get ahold of the OTA and do their magic.
Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.

That might just of been the best error ever, especially if you use root a lot. No way to go back and no known, released root at the moment for that version. Like above me has said, try flashing the NK1 modem using Odin and see if that improves your signal any.
Well, i just have been using the stock rom, rooted with safestrap. Id like to update to 4.4.4 just to have the latest OTA with whatever various fixes it might have. Before i did the update i uninstalled anything from wanam exposed framework wise. Then i did the "remove root" from superSU. I still have the unlocked lock on the note 3 splash screen after reboot and the OTA fails....says error at install screen. I have read other people have done what i have done and the update worked. What im asking is am i overlooking something? Is it really even possible without using odin and reverting to stock even though i have read people have had sucess????

I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.
I have a question though. Where should I look to keep track of the latest news about a root technique for a Verizon Note 3? Also, is there a place to contribute to a bounty for someone who can figure this out?
I ask because If you google "samsung note 3 Verizon 4.4.4 towelroot" there are tons of hits, but most of them are from eons ago and while I root my phone, I am not a developer, and so don't know the lay of the land. In the past I've just searched for "root verizon samsung note 3" and crawled through the resulting mound of irrelevant material until eventually I found the answer. Or is the answer simply that every few days I search again to see if anything new pops up?
I realize this is a totally newbie question, but I'm a long-time newbie: I've been rooting my phones for years but I don't have a lot of phones and updates only come out every so often so I never really move up the learning curve of how to do this quickly and easily. I suspect others have the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.
My phone messed up earlier this week and I had to use repair assistant and when I did it updated me to NK1 KitKat 4.4.4 and I lost root and can not get it back plus the reception issue is still terrible.

I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.

It likely is possible to update and keep root. But if after updating you screw up a mod, etc. and need to get back to stock you will lose root permanently.

Just install the nk1 modem. That is all you need if you are trying to get better reception.

There is no Odin 3.29 out. Just Google Odin 3.09 and download to your desktop if you don't
already have it. Then flash the modem to your phone. Don't unroot.

You need to put your phone in download mode before plugging into pc. Make sure debugging is checked in developer settings.
Thanks…
I forgot the download mode and to check the debug- always in a rush…
Ill check it when I get in- thanks again

Verizon forced me to upgrade before they would troubleshoot my phone.
I was not able to do it OTA, but using the Verizon upgrade tool works.
Now I lost root, & I gained a whole bunch of bloatware. Very frustrating

I read about 4.4.4 and didn't like what they took away from 4.4.2. I won't go to it. If I were you I'd 'towelroot'- (get the simple steps on xda), and 'beanstown 106' has all the firmwares for these phones, put the nc4 on w/ 4.4.2, then install biggins rom v7, then upgrade via dirty flash with 8.0 then immediately w/ 8.3- fast touch response and after about 3-4 days, you'lI be getting twice the battery life… I jumped up to the new v9 but they dont have the theme for it yet. I miss the Kromex blue on black…

[Q] bootloader rooting and I don't know what I'm doing

I want to root my phone which I found towel route which I I downloaded but its not really working, which I found out is due to bootloader being locked. so I decided what I needed to do was unlock the bootloader but I'm reading all these forums which are talking about roms and I have no idea what that is. I was wondering if someone could kind of walk me through this a little bit like talk about it n smaller not so technical terms because I don't really understand it. I know some coding and a lot of the technical know-how but I've never really worked with phones and really deep programming I guess. I'm sure I could figure it out if someone explained it.

Here's a video that might help a little. It's sort of old, but depending on which version of android you're on it'll probably help you get root access at the very least
What firmware version are you on? If you're on newer firmware the vid the other guy linked to is not going to work for you. There are tutorials in the general forum that can help you.

Galaxy s4
I was able to root my phone using towel root, then I disabled Knox with supersu. I wanted to remove all the bloat wear so I thought getting a new rom would do it (I've been researching) and I tried that three times but it keeps resetting my phone to factory settings. What am I doing wrong? I tried CM and that pacman one. I really like the aok(whatever letter) one but it's not compatible with my phone. I have a galaxy s4 unlocked, it's at&t but I actually have tmobile. I have all the at&t software AND tmobile crud on here. I really want it gone. I was trying to install the roms through my sd card with my phone on odis mode.

Are you using safestrap and flashing touch wiz based roms? Cm and Pac will not work on your device if you're using safestrap.

Inever got around to downloading safestrap. I thought that was something you did after you downloaded the rom. And I've never heard of the other one. It shows up with something about verification problems. I should have written it down. It took so long for my phone to turn back on.

I'm not sure what firmware version your phone is on but I'm guessing it's on a newer version where cwm or twrp recoveries are not going to work. You'll need to install safestrap and install roms with it.

Okay. I will try that. I did post a picture of my device information in my second post in case it had what you were asking get for.

Sorry,I didn't see that. I'm on my mobile. You're on nc1 firmware. You definitely need safestrap.
