INFORMATION:
I have a Nexus 7 rooted and unlocked. i'm running AOKP Jellybean Build 4 ROM. I have installed Terminal Emulator and have added my wife as a user through Terminal Emulator. However, as the other threads mention; my messages, email etc. continue to go through although it is running her profile. I've tried SwitchMe app, however the tablet needs to reboot every time we switch users, which is a huge pitfall with that app.
QUESTION:
How to I get certain apps (google voice, gmail, etc. to stop with the notifications while the tablet is running her profile. I'm talking about the profile made through Terminal Emulator (not SwitchMe).
I've read threads such as this one...
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/switch-user-profiles-on-jelly-bean/
However, I don't know how to allow/disallow certain apps to run even though I'm using one of the listed launchers while using her profile (which I've created through Terminal Emulator). Forgive me for my ignorance please, developers/users.
That's the reason I deleted my Google account as well on my son's tf300, he can see all my stuff including my work email, etc. Multi profile will eventually come. I've seen xperia tablet s having that awesome feature already. Hopefully soon on others like nexus 7.

Has anyone figured out how to allow multiple users share applications across users and Google accounts? It's my tablet but I wanted to give my girlfriend her own homescreen (she has her own google account). Is there away to allow her to share some of my applications?
No, not yet. The second account is completely sandboxed, she won't even be able to access your sdcard partition.

Ok, thanks.
Another question...
The application that is installed, will it be installed again on the other user environment taking up double space? If not then I might opt for the 16GB...
I'm using the app called Multiuser App Share. It works good for most apps. Those requiring root are no-go tho, as is most paid apps. The 2ed user does take up its own storage space. Some is shared but it's mostly settings stuff & requires little space. I'm rooted with 3 backups & that's using 16gb on my 32gb device. Backups are large as you could expect having to backup 2 users data.

If you do not use this Multi User App Share applications, say I have "[email protected]" and I install Angry Birds therefore I have the associate link on this account.
On "[email protected]" I also install angry birds and associate it to this account. When I install it for the second time on the secondary user, does it download the same .apk or is the OS smart enough to realise, hey the primary user or other users has this .apk, lets not download it and use the same .apk.
This is not related to data storage as it is stored on the /u/0/ for the primary user and /u/1/ from my understanding so I am aware of that.
Don't care with applications which requires roots as I read that the secondary user cannot get root. Just care about storage and big .apk may be a problem if I buy the 16GB Nexus 10.
The 2 users are pretty much separated. As far as apps & storage, each user is separate having their very own apks, app data, media & media storage, pictures, etc. Sorta like having 2 complete tablets on one. Ex.: Right now each user on my tablet is using about 3.5 gb of data/media storage for 7 gb total. I don't know of any apk that is actually "shared", as in both users use the same single apk. The share-app I spoke of above allows an apk to be installed from the primary to the secondary. It's for installing apks AFAIK. Some say they can share games, but not so on mine yet. The tablet is still new to me, but this is what I'm seeing so far.

Actually. I run multi right now and it doesn't redownload the apps it just grants (or so it seams...) the user access to the app. Now the data for apps are separate. Then again I have one account I use for my apps so both users have that account to get apps from.

This was a test to show you using my single app account and instilling nova on the "test" account. Nova is well over a gig if not two and you'll notice the storage usage on the test account

I see what your saying. Looking closer & playing with the Multiuser app, I allowed the 2ed user the use of Deadtrigger installed in the Primary account. Then going into 2ed account & opening that game, there was no waiting for a download - it simply opened & was available for play.... Cool
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 2
So it looks like the primary account needs to be added as well to the secondary account and then things should work?
djd338 is that what you done on yours or was Deadtrigger was installed or linked to two separate accounts?

I only installed it one time & on the primary user account. All else happened within the Multiuser App Share-app. Deadtrigger was installed to Primary. The Multiuser app opened & the box for Deadtrigger was checked to allow sharing. Opening 2ed user account allowed for immediate play. Paid games (Nova3 & GTA) where also checked to allow sharing, but when 2ed user opened them on that side, a popup appeared saying it was not allowed.

Yah you might want to try having a Google account for just you paid apps like how I do then any device or account can have them with no trouble and you don't have to worry about other people going through your email

There should be some way to lock everything but Google play access when you add account on secondary user. I have disabled all syncing on my Google account which I have added to my wife's and kids account. That way at least the calendar and Gmail app is not automatically showing my things. But I think that there are place for improvement with multiuser support. For example shared folders so all users easily can access common files.
Skickat från min Nexus 10 via Tapatalk 2
There are 2 methods as far as I know:
1) Add the Google account with apps to the 2nd user, when you install a 'common' app, you'll notice that it'll finish downloading instantly, as if it didn't really download anything. I believe what happens is that the 'restriction' for that specific app is removed for the 2nd user, which brings us to #2
2) The 'multiuser app share' does exactly this -- it edits the package-restrictions.xml of the secondary user and removes the offending lines.
Don't quote me on this, I'm not really an expert on the matter, but I have actually manually enabled apps through this method (#2). My first try got my 2nd user messed up (after reboot, it went through setup again) but it magically 'installed' all my apps from the primary user. The subsequent attempts worked just fine ('enabling' individual apps)
The only problem I see is that the multi share app might break after another OTA update. I am sure Google will sort this out in 4.2.2 which is rumour to be coming out soon (or has according to some reports)

Running a test secondary user on my HTC Inspire/Synergy's 4.2.1 SR6 (OFFICIAL codefireX Builds - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003273).
I have found that it separates "users" data/apps fine (Gallery shows "0" files - GREAT!!! But, the app "File Manager" is listed in the available apps, which of course you can use to view the contents of the SD card - and the other user's files.
So how do you block certain apps from being used? I've tried Titanium's "freeze", but it only froze the app on my user profile, and the other user profile still had it running.
I just got my N10 today.
I backed up ym phone with Titanium and rooted the tablet.
Then I made some accounts, mine as owner, my GF's as a second. Then I restored my backup using my account.
MOST apps were then on my GF's, but they don't have their own data.. this is quite stupid to be honest. A 1GB game means 2GB downloaded, despite it could quite easily share the same location.
I am somewhat confused about Android's support for multiple users. The Galaxy S4 comes with Android 4.2.2. I thought the multi-user support (not just Accounts but users with separated data for apps) was part of the system. It works flawlessly on my Nexus and is easy to find in the settings. With the S4, the settings are somewhat "cleaned up" by placing them in tabs. However, I cannot find how to set up and use multiple users. It seems I can only add new Google accounts as in older versions of Android. Has Samsung disabled this feature? Or can it be found somewhere?

I beliece Samsung plans to use Knox software for user management and enterprise security. That software could not be included from the beginning, and is expected in a future update.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/full-launch-of-samsung-knox-delayed-until-a-later-date/
I though Knox was just for security and other enterprise features. So is it correct that there is no normal Android multi user support although Samsung is using Android 4.2.2? I cannot imagine that Samsung's implementation will be similar or compatible with Android's implementation. Does anybody know more?
If anyone if still interested, I found something: It seems that the multi-user feature of Android is only available for tablets at this time. Hence it is not present on the Galaxy S4. I just posted this for reference so people could find this in future.

Yes... but I'm having the same problem on my galaxy tab 2 7". Cant find an option to set up multiple users either
Re: Multi User support
Actually multi user is available, although hidden, for any phone with 4.2 or later. Although you need to be rooted. Add "fw.max_users 4" to the end of your build.prop and reboot. When you enter your settings you'll see clear as day "Users". Only bug I found is that you can't switch back and forth. You need the AOSP lockscreen for that.

If you're on an aosp rom, You can switch either from the lockscreen(you may have to enable lockscreen rotation and rotate the phone sideways), the power menu, or the status bar profile icon

Hi
I have decided to move back to android from iOS as i would like to have more freedom and less dependency on itunes
I am having some issues with android
The biggest one is app permissions on ios i was able to choose which permissons i can give an app however on android its take it or leave it. Please please help me on this.
I know i can root my S5 and i might be able to control app permissions however i am worried i wont be able to use my banking apps after rooting my device.
I will appreciate a simple solution to this as i am not very technical and dont understand much about rooting (you cant blame me i am an ios user)
Thanks
I had that same issue you are worried about......I rooted my device and some apps detected this and refused to function. I got around it by installing xposed framework and adding the Rootcloak module to it......The apps in question can't tell I have root now......
Edit......Rootcloak contains a list of *known* root checking apps, but also offers the capability of adding new apps to the list if your app is not listed.....
Edit 2.......Welcome back from the dark side...... lol

That depends on whether you are running 4.4.2 KK or 5.0.0 LP.......
But whichever Android version you have, you'll need to use a PC/Laptop and some software called Odin.......

Hello
Welcome in the Android familly!
Getting root access on the phone removes the basis of the security feature of the Android framework. For sure you will have more control on the application installed but some malware could
take benefit from the fact your phone is rooted. It is not surprising that critical stuff like banking does not want to run if the phone is rooted. This beeing said I rooted my previous phone (GS3) and
might well root this one (GS5) after a while.
For me main reason for rooting the phone was enabling automatic control of data on/off/ wifi on/off, flight mode which have been removed from latest Android revisions.
However when you give root access to an application that ask for it, you just give it more responsibility/power over your phone content/stability/integrity.
Apps without root support cannot "damage" the phone/content by construct because they only have access to their own stuff.

Hi thanks i agree.
I wish android could give more control to users so they dont have to take the rooting route as i said my only reason is i want to control app permissions. I should have the right to choose which areas i allow fb to i dont want fb to save my contacts on their servers or my location.

My only concern from making the switch from iphone 6 to note 4 is the loss of imessage encryption witch is pretty solid to now using the basic sms messanger. There is 3rd party apps but they require both people to be on them. As far as documents and photos go google drive is encrypted just like i cloud i believe. Life would be perfect if they had imessage for android. I am rooted and set permissions based on what the app is and delete unnecessary Google apps like google + ect.
Edit but I also dont use Facebook ect only instagram

Coming from the Nexus 6P, I use the multiple user profile feature quite often to switch between different game users for some games that I use multiple accounts for.
Does the S8 support this android feature?

Not that I know of. But you can use secure folder instead. It will let you set up a secure and independent environment where you'll be able to install any app independent from main interface. You'll be able to fresh install games, use another WhatsApp, viber etc. account.

Oh ok sorry im only used to touchwiz or stock Android sorry bout that
I'd love this too, apparently you could enable it using unrooted TWRP on the S7??
My Huawei Mate 9 has it also.
My S8 definitely doesn't!
Samsung is the only Android phone which mutes the Multiple User function. It's a real shame considering it's an android function activated on all other android phones, I mean all including even the cheapest except Samsung which deliberately mutes it.
You can download kids mode from Samsung, which should give you what are you looking for. Otherwise not sure how many people share one phone together. My kids have their own tablets/phones so never checked kids mode myself, but I know it's there under Galaxy essentials on Samsung website.

Hi, Kids mode uses same accounts as normal user, so no good. Secure Folder works, but you can only add one more user, Android stock is 4 users plus guest.
Shame Samsung stop this.

No-one uses it on phones. No-one gives a high end model for kids to play, better that they have their own low end device to play, scratch and break/ lose. Also small kids shouldn't play with smartphones.
Nevertheless on tablets it may be important.

Multi User, is not for kids. It is for those who want to separate Work/Friends/family profiles where each user/profile has its own contacts, Facebook, Whatsapp, etc....
For rooted phone, add the following two lines to /system/build.prop :
Code:
fw.max_users=3
fw.show_multiuserui=1
Then reboot your phone, and you will see the icon in notification.
Yeah I've been looking for it too, it's not available for Samsung phones I think. I don't really need different accounts but I wanted to switch between work mode where I only had things like email, browser, and phone... For that, I just use a different launcher like Nova and hide all the distracting apps.

Exactly. I want to have a work profile active during the day, and then switch to personal when I go home. I have a high-pressure job and sometimes I want to simply switch out of that environment all-together - not simply mute notifications or go into Do Not Disturb mode.
I used the switchable profiles a lot on my Nexus and Pixel phones, so I miss it quite a bit now that I'm on the S8!
It is shame samsung, muted existing feature guest mode
