Customizing the nylon - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

So, this is 2 part question. First, anyone know if its possible to get replacement back plates? Google did not answer this.
Second, what can be done to nylon. I know there are acid dies that work on it maybe. But dying black might be no good. I was also thinking of rubber coating it. No real reason other then I like to tinker! Any thoughts?

Yeah. the cool thing about ballistic nylon is it's fairly common. I have tons of it around the house I'm sure from flashlights or knives.. I'm going to experiment a little. See what holds. do some damage to that stuff before I touch the phone lol

I'm interested in the rubber coating. Please follow up with how well it works. I'll do that to mine since I hate the slipperiness of the nylon.

Anyone ever solve the slippery nylon issue?

Real simple. Ebay. Get a new back plate. Make sure it is legitimate and includes the LEDs. Get a medium thickness guitar pick. I use Fender standard plastic. Remove the sim tray. Gently pry the back plate off. There is adhesive holding it there. Break the adhesion carefully. Snap your new back into place. Using rubbing alcohol, a paper towel and your fingernail, scrape the verizon logo off the back. Enjoy your new phone, now without a warranty.
Things to remember. Do not damage the stock back. Put it someplace safe in case you need it. I am prepared to put it back on when I return it from the edge agreement.
FWIW, I did this in about 5 minutes. I now have a MGF black 64 GB Turbo wearing a J&D thin shell case. Pappa is happy.
DO NOT try and rubberize the nylon. That would be phenomenally stupid.

I have bought three different LG G3 Qi wireless charging back covers from them (for Verizon, T-mobile). Because U.S. carriers had LG disable the Qi wireless charging, to force people to buy $70 "folio" covers, when the factory back cover works just fine. Three friends bought LG G3 (one Verizon, two T-mobile) and I helped them get that functionality back.
Also I have bought other items from Ali Express. Not a lot, but have never had an issue, except for delivery time. (Depends on the merchant.) One back cover took so long (over three weeks), I ordered another from different website, and then both arrived the same time. Will usually take 2 weeks -- but allow up to 4 weeks.

I can vouch for Aliexpress... Bought 4 products and shipping was fast and was provided with a tracking number even for the cheapest of things unlike a few ebay seller.... Actually coincidentally one of the things i boughtt from Aliexpress was the Blue replacement back!

You guys ate crazy.... No way I have the guts to do that... Lol

I took the plunge and used Plastidip. It works very well. I started off with the liquid that you dip tools in - it spreads on and peels off. the downside is that it too thick to spread smooth. I tried the spray on. 2 heavy coats work well. The downside to it, is that it doesn't peel off because it is thin.
But to peel it off, I just coat it with the liquid dip type, let it dry and peels off the spray.
I probably did not have to mask at all, as it should peel off the camera and flash as it does from the moto logo, but better safe.

I was thinking about this ****ing nylon and it would be awesome if someone could replace it with some leather like moto X² back...

I tried. I may try again some day but the nylon is much thinner then leather. So it bulges out.

I've done that too lol. Best paint I've found for it so far is vinyl fabric paint. You can find it at Ace Hardware or any car shop. Plates used to paint the interior of a car. Because nylon is plastic it holds really well but remains flexible.

I found a blue nylon one on eBay. You can also get the red back(non nylon). I'm thinking of swapping out the nylon back for the red once my maxx arrives.

Do you have pictures to see how it looks?

I am thinking masking more neatly and doing blue Plastidip on the back - the whole thing. Since it does peel off, I have nothing to lose. Safer the vinyl color imo.

OK, so I masked the phone and sprayed the plastidip a few times by now. Thicker works better, but some things I didn't like - Any nick and it starts to peel, and it picks up dirt and dust. It also feels a bit too grippy.
So I got a Skinomi skin - really just 3M and other vinyl stuff, but it sticks very well to the nylon. I was worried it would not. here is carbon fiber - I trimmed the bottom so it just covered the nylon. So far so good.

[Q] So I dropped my tablet

Yep. Set it on my car (stupid, especially since I didn't have a case) and looked away. I heard it slowly creep to the edge and BAM. So now the shell is messed up. (Pictures below) I called Acer and the dude couldn't understand English. He insisted that they would fix it for $200. But the damage is purely cosmetic! I would really like to fix it though as the case can't snap completely back on. Does anyone know where I could find just the funked up metal piece? Thanks for the help guys.

Sorry I have no idea where you can source the parts..
I dropped mine off my lounge arm rest onto thick carpet. The back plate flew off ripping what I assume is a warranty sticker... Which was half on the inside of the back plate and half on the motherboard.
On the corner of the front plate of the tablet that hit the ground, it is now slightly distorted so that there is a big seam between the front and back plates and the corner feels rough because the edge of the front plate sticks out more than the back.
Hope I made sense? Couldnt be bothered posting photos...
Couldn't be more annoyed about the shoddy build quality because I feel like I can't sell the tablet in the future due to the slight damage. I ordered a case to make holding the tablet more comfortable due to the now sharp edge and to protect from future falls.

I feel the same way. And I am infuriated that Acer expects me to pay $200 to fix cosmetic damage. For a mere $100 more I could simply buy a new one at Staples!
How long ago did you buy it? Maybe try to get some warranty on it and pretend it happened after you got the warranty.
Thats uncanny! I dropped mine also and it just so happened to be in the same corner! Lol
I did manage to stick my foot out though just before it hit the ground and the damage is a little less than yours however I did have to strip mine down and bend the case back into its normal position, or as much as I could!
It makes a creaking noise now because the chassis is not 100% straight and my camera is done for, just as well I didn't buy it for the camera ;-)
Took about an hour to get the case as straight as I could but you might be OK if you take some time and apply pressure in the right areas...
Best of luck!
The metal looks good and feels stronger but does not bounce back when dropped.I to drooped mine from 2 feet. No damage other trunk one of the snaps broke.
You could get a vinyl skin to cover it once you get it bent back in shape. Watch eBay eventually some people will be selling dead units. I have got notebook main boards this way.
Good luck metal is not always better bohooooooo

You use a heat gun or I guess a hair dryer works too, and you work your way around the back edges of the phone. then you detach the back part of the phone bit by bit with the same things you need to open an iPhone for example (guitar pick and such).
I'm also wondering if the phone is still as water resistant as originally advertised (I don't trust that adhesive band that you apply after...), not to mention the warranty of the handset after doing this.
But, other than that, it's a job well done.

it actually really easy to change it yourself.it just hold by a ring of heavy-duty tape so just heat it a little bit and you can rip it off very easily.then just stick the new one on it and is done.

natural leather longevity discussion

bought the natural leather back for verizon and loved the initial look, but a few weeks in i'm seeing dark spots from my hands. i'm assuming this is dirt. i'm very easy with my phone and it only goes in my pocket alone. I've tried Weiman leather wipes but they don't seem to be cleaning it. anyone else running into this issue?
it's more noticeable in person but you can see it in the pictures

That's the beauty of leather in stead if aging it gains character and beauty
I like how my natural leather back aged but after a month or so it turned completely black where my hands would grip, this was fine for me but would kill the resale value (I usually change phone once a year-year and a half). last week my natural leather back ripped and and i ended up ordering a cognac leather backed one instead, its lighter then i expected but oh well.

I purchased the pure edition from Motorola directly and did the warranty swap through them.
It was a pretty smooth transaction, although seems like I'll be paying for return shipping.
There was an article on one of the android sites, I forget which one, outlining how to clean it using saddle soap. I've used the stuff in the past and it works wonders on leather.

i'm going to try this, they used it on black which wouldn't really show any dirt removal. but i will try it.
My navy blue model is a month old and it looks like it's fresh out the box (well, except for a big scratch near the top where I gouged it with my nail on accident ).
Yeah it's pretty much impossible to keep the leather pristine with daily use. I got the black leather and I sometimes wish I'd gotten wood instead, but overall I still love it. I keep my phone in it's own pocket and I'm gentle with it, but even a the wrong swipe with a fingernail will put a dent in it. My black leather doesn't show much dirt, but I've got a fair amount of denting.
Well boys, tried the saddle soap and it doesn't seem to help.
It's leather!!!! It will wear and absorb the oils from your hands. It isn't going to look new.
I knew after a few days it wasn't going to hold up well. I would have been okay with a little wear over time but I didn't go two days before I noticed spots on it. I ended up exchanging it.

I have always thought part of the beauty of leather items, was the aging process. I have always done things to accelerate the process, I never thought anyone would want to curtail it.

My 2013 plastic back looked flawless till the day I got rid of it...

Best back material?

I don't quite know which to get. Does anyone know which one is the most resistant to wear/scratches? Do any of them look really good in person? Are there differences between the different types of wood? I'm kind've clueless here.
Obviously durability remains to be seen but I got the leather back and I like it a lot. It looks good and is very comfortable to hold. It has a nice texture, enough grip but not too much.

I posted this on reddit earlier, but it seems like it might address your concerns as well. I was initially sent a faulty device, so since it was going back anyway, I decided to have a quick go at testing the wood back's durability. I didn't go crazy on it, but I did jab at it pretty hard with my fingernail, and it was surprisingly resilient. Despite trying, I wasn't able to scratch/ dent it in any meaningful way that couldn't be rubbed out. That being said, the one downside I'm noticing with the wood backs is that they appear to be thinner than both the leather and the silicone. Pictures I have seen of the leather and silicone show the back resting flush, or slightly above the metal edge of the phone. With the wood it sits slightly below that edge and as a result there is a small metal lip around the entire outside edge of the wood back. This isn't terrible, but it is definitely something you can feel when holding the phone, and it makes the build feel slightly less premium. I will say that the wood already feels nicer to the touch than when I first received the phone. At first it feels a bit like a sticker, but I'm assuming the oils from my hands are making it feel much more like wood.
I also got the black leather. But I find it to be very slippery. I've heard the rubber backs have the best grip. Given the size of the device, the ability to hold it in one hand has to be a consideration. I like the "look" of my leather back, but the feel is too slippery. I'm hoping that as the leather wears, perhaps it will improve in grip over time. But it's not any less slippery than day one at this point.
And although the rubber may have better grip. I'm thinking something that holds to the hand better, probably holds germs better to [emoji14] . So there's a plus and minus to it more than likely IMHO.
I can only assume leather gives the best life long durability. Simply because leather should .
As mentioned, only time will tell .

I have the rubber back and wood back. Wood looks so much better, rubber feels more secure, they both are resistant to objects in my pockets, desks, dirt, etc...Think I will keep wood since its so beautiful. I'm just waiting to see what the crop of bumpers look and feel like when they start being released.

Good leather conditioner will give it just right the amount of tack and make it look good while keeping leather conditioned.
I've got the charcoal ash back and I'm loving it! I've had the phone for two weeks now and it looks exactly the same as it did when I unboxed it. I don't find it too slippery either.

Also, does anyone know if the Charcoal Ash Wood is more gray or black? I'm trying to go for a "Droid" (black and red) look, and I'm wondering if I should go with that, Ebony Wood, Black Soft Grip, or Black Leather (though probably not Black Leather considering one of you said it was slippery). I'm leaning towards wood, as it would be the most unique.

Mine is dark... Definitely more black than gray IMO. Here are some shots of it:

Oh boy, that's better than I'd hoped! Moto Maker really doesn't capture the look of these things.

Correct, Moto Maker simulations don't come close to the real thing.
That's why I made this thread, for people to post photos or the front and back of their actual device.
I will say, the real thing looks better than Moto Maker simulations, for every design I've seen.
Now after a couple weeks use. The black leather back has good grip. Now I am happy with it as the back for the long haul. I am also going to put leather conditioner on it today.
Go leather .

After applying the leather conditioner. The grip is perfect.

Redmi Note 7 Case

Just received my phone yesterday and set it up. Now I'm trying to figure out which case would be good to protect it. That one that comes with it is good for fingerprints but won't really protect it as the rear camera sticks up and it doesn't even protect the front screen as it's not high enough. Any thoughts on what case may work well, or ones to avoid? I'll start looking. Thanks.
iBetter, awesome case. Protect camera lens by . 1mm. Can buy on Amazon.de or .co.uk. Maybe .com too.

why hide beautiful hardware under a case?
Always the original Xiaomi. Don't buy yellow, getting dirty soon.

I know but if I drop it the front or back may shatter. I know it's Gorilla glass 5, but it's still glass. I'm looking for a case that's not too overpowering but still protects it. Something clear maybe with some bumpers in the corners and that rises up above the lenses on the back to keep them from getting scratched. I'll find something. Thanks.

as my RSM once told me "eh soldier, you are not supposed to drop your phone you know?"
i'm waiting on my flex filament to arrive before i print out my corner studs. that's the only acceptable "protection" to me to minimally detract from the beautiful hardware.

I know. That's what I'm talking about. Do you have a 3D printer? I guess you'll leave the lenses unprotected in the back. I bought this one about a week ago, but it may take another week or so to get to me. If it seems good once it arrives I'll let you all know. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Xiaomi...Slim-Soft-TPU-AirBag-Case-Cover-/123666850179. Thanks.

yupe, have a printer,
i have designed my corner to take into account of the additional height offset of the protruding lens,
i also made the top right piece into 1 huge piece to include a skirt around the lens.

Really cool. You'll have to show us the final product once it's done. What do you think of the one I bought? It looks a little overwhelming, but it's the best one I found so far. And it was cheap. This one's unobtrusive and looks good, but I'm not sure it provides protection for the back lenses, and also it doesn't have any corner protection. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Xiaomi...-Clear-Case-Cover-Tempered-Glass/254208605942
Heading back to bed. It's after 1 am here. I'll check back in later today.

looks similar to the clear silicon case they threw in with sans the color highlights.
visually clear is the best, but you are still missing out on the feel of the hardware. you should really try the phone without protection, RAW is best. i like the feel of the phone a lot and it's a fingerprint magnet.
the best advice i can give you to not drop your phone is to not pick up the phone so much. The more time the phone spends not in your hands is proportional to the risk of phone drops. while the time the phone spends in your hands exponentially increases the phone drop risk.

I love this case:

The navy blue one looks really nice and it protects well. Plus it's $4, so that's an easy call to make.

Looks very protective. Thanks.
You're not just worried about the front/back but the sides as well.
This week my Ferilnso 2.5d tempered glass cracked while my brand new 1 week old Redmi Note 7 was in my pocket.
Somehow a tiny piece of glass shard made its way into the side of my free RN7's case and managed to scuff a small section on side of my phone.
You can only imagine how pissed I was finding out my glass screen protector not only cracked BUT also scuffed the side of my phone WHILE IT WAS IN THE FREAKING CASE!!!!
Moral of the story, you want full protection including the sides not just the front/back glass.
I'm now on the hunt for a better quality case than the free one Xiaomi gives us in the box

Trying to find a Rexang clear case for my RN7 similar quality to the blue and rose gold cases my wife and I had on our old Honor 8 phones.
Also had a very similar style goosberry brand case in gold on my old Note 4.
Those cases were so durable. Cannot tell you how many times the phone fell on hard surfaces and nothing happened. AND the case still looked good after lol
