Been searching and trying various things to fix my bricked phone. For some background of what initially went wrong.
I had the phone rooted following these steps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-root-i337ucufni1-t2881298
and then also had installed safetrap. I then wanted to use a custom rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221 from here so I booted into safetrap recovery. (Was running 4.4.2 at this point.)
First I did backup my existing system to the sd card (maybe this will come in handy later in fixing things?)
Then I went to install and selected the three files I was suppose to use.
After i selected them, I realized I hadn't wiped things, so I left the safetrap install and went to the wipe option. I wanted to make sure I wiped everything except the SD card and here is where I probably screwed up... in the advanced wipe I selected everything to be wiped except for the sd card. It did it's thing. I then went back and selected "install" and here is where things looked different... I figured I'd be back to the option to select what to install, but instead it just went to a terminal window and it showed 'something processing' (Can't recall exactly what it said) and it was just stuck there. I left it for a quite a while (10 minutes or so) and still nothing, so I decided I'd try to start over, so I popped battery out and rebooted.
That's when all I got was the samsung splash screen.
At this time I "was" able to get into both recovery mode and download mode (Not longer can get to recovery mode... probably broke it based on stuff I did coming up.)
So then I was at the stage of googling and researching what to do. The option that seemed to come up over and over was this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545 and I would repeatedly try it and everything looked to go well (saw stuff in odin installing) but at then end it just says "failed."
This led me to try the keis approach which I also so recommended. The initial attempt failed so I then tried the keis emergency firmware recovery option, but apparently something is wrong here since I don't see my device listed and have no idea what the recovery code would be.
I also had tried first installing the two kernels I had used that enabled me to first root my phone (listed in the first link NC1 stock and NI1 stock) and then using odin as described above, but same result.
Note lastly, if I now try get into recovery mode, I get the yellow message about keis failed to install (I can get the exact verbiage if it helps.)
Sorry for the lengthy explanation but figured some background might help. I can still get to download mode and use Odin so I figure there must be something I can probably do? Any ideas what to try would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I need to try and flash with a different PIT and different firmware? I'm just not sure what to try.
First, this should be in q&a, not the general forum. It gets lost here.

Thanks for trying to help JD. I'll maybe repost in the questions forum (sorry I didn't see that.)
Note from the link above I tried both
NB1 ROOTED WITH SAFESTRAP
nb1 I337UCUFNB1_TWRootable_Full_Odin
and
NB1 STOCK (and optional upgrade to NJ4)
AP_I337UCUEMK2_1921628_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
Both of them run through their motions but end up with failed as shown here ...

Thread moved to Q&A
Please remember the word "bricked" is used to describe a phone that can no longer power on at all
Soft--bricked or sponged is used to describe a phone that at least can still get into download mode or LEDs light, etc.
Thanks

First off THANKS for not just giving up on me and stating the above.
After trying several USB cables it got me thinking, what else could maybe interfering with how Odin is working? When I originally rooted and flashed some kernels using Odin in my windows VM (using VMware Fusion) on Macbook Pro things had gone just fine, but I realized I might have done all of that before having upgraded to Mavericks.
So on a whim, I figured I'd try the trial version of Parallels and use my windows image with that.
Sure enough BINGO it worked!!
I would have guessed the VM as the problem sooner if my old windows vm under Fusion would have said that it couldn't connect, but what threw me off is that it DOES connect... but obviously some kind of USB protocol is getting messed up. The fact you mentioned bad cables and "finicky" prompted me to try Parallels.
Regardless I'm happy now. I'll spend the $70 and just use windows on Parallels from now on.
Thanks again!!!

Long story short, I was running Axura2.04, and I discovered I wasn't getting voice mail notification so I went to restore the phone to a backup rom I had made of the stock version using Clockwork Premium, and after it finished installing it got stuck on the Vibrant/Samsung screen.
I was unable to boot to recovery, and I now have the phone connected to my computer via USB and I got it into what appears to be download mode (there's a yellow triangle with a droid shoveling dirt) and I'm stuck.
I am on a mac and do not have access to a PC. Any advice on how to proceed?
(ps i am relatively new to all of this, I've only been at it for a a few weeks)
Thanks
If I'm screwed someone just tell me and I'll make a trip to the t-mobile store and bite the bullet.
Sounds like you need a kernel flash for a 2.1 Rom... try using odin if you can.

You're not screwed, but only providing you can either gain access to Windows somehow (for an Odin3 reflash) or are comfortable with using a command line tool similar to Odin3 that is available for the Mac, Heimdall.. Heimdall has no GUI..
Heimdall is available here..
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
The XDA thread on it is available here..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265
General instructions for flashing firmware via Odin3 can be found in various links that link from the Vibrant Bible thread at the top of the dev section.
Best of luck
Isn't there a PC emulater that you can get on your Mac? If you can get that then get Odin and the right files and flash back to stock. Do a search around here for Odin.

Thanks for help guys, I'm meeting up with a friend tonight who has the software for a PC emulator so I'm going to try running Odin from there

Get heimdall, it works on mac

I worked with Thegreat520 and we got the phone up and running again using the methods outlined in the stickie above. I tried using Heimdall, but that's too far beyond me, I can't code to save my life, took college courses for it and even that couldn't save me.
That said we did find out that using a virtual machine on a mac doesn't work, it has something to do with how the computer recognizes the device, and there is another thread here somewhere in which someone else ran into the same problem.
Thanks for not flaming me guys, the ultimate mistake happened because I was restoring a backup of a ROM and didn't clear the cache or the user data before hand. Lesson learned the hardway.
So I want to root my phone, but I cannot get ANY computer to recognize the phone when it is in either download mode, or debug mode.
I'm running Sprints stock EB13 right now.
I've downloaded the samsung drivers and installed them.
I've tried 3 computers -- A XP 32bit, a vista 64bit, and a 7 64bit system. I've also tried 3 different cables. Nothing works.
The phone is recognized fine in mass storage mode.
Tried restarting the phone many times, removing the battery, etc.. same with the computer side of things.
I'm out of ideas to try and can't find a good post with a fix.
Thanks for any input!

I wanted to use Odin to go back to DI18 at first. After that didn't work I tried ADB in debug mode, and that no longer works!
I know ADB in debug mode used to work when I was on DI18 because I used it before when I first got my phone. Now I've upgraded to EB13 from the file samsung provided on their website. I've also tried a hard re-set of the phone and that didn't help either.
I had a similar issue. I was able to resolve it by creating a fresh user in windows and then running it from there.

I had this exact problem with my Epic also. I tried rooting my fone too, for like 2 months straight, with no luck... Tried every technique, software, and trick in the book and nothing worked...
2 days ago though, I finally rooted it using this solution:
Forget about trying to "root" it.
Instead, flash the "Stock EB13 Deodexed EXT4 + CW 3.0.0.6" to your fone (search the forum, you'll find it and the thread that explains how to do it).
It's pre-rooted too!
It worked fabulous for me. I am now rooted and well on my way to fully customizing my fone.
Odin is finicky though... I had to switch the usb cord around to several different ports before it recognized my fone. Also, it kept locking up at a certain point in the flashing process, but after moving the image from "Phone" to "PDA" (you'll know what these are once you open up Odin), it worked brilliantly.
Try it, it works!
P.S. Just in case this helps anyone; I should note that originally I upgraded from Eclair to the official unrooted straight from Samsung (before they pulled it) stock Froyo. I loved it, but wanted it rooted.
I read somewhere that it was easier to root it if you reverted back to Eclair first. So I did (search forum for uninstalling Froyo).
And from Eclair, I flashed to the above mentioned rooted and deodexed version of Froyo (EB13).
Hope it helps!

Might try looking at the usb on the phone to check for something preventing a good connection; I've read where people have found bent connectors and were able to fix it.
Good luck; that has to be extremely frustrating.
I tried everything like you, multiple cables, multiple computers, EVERYTHING!!!
I finally broke down and took it to sprint and they couldnt even get it to connect or fix the problem so i got a new epic. You might just want to take it back and get another one. Im on my 3rd epic now so that should tell you something about these ****TY phones...
I notices a few users have mentioned that they're dealing with trying to restore or unbrick their Continuum after flashing incompatible kernels and other problems.
I made this backup immediately after I got root, before I did anything else, to make absolutely sure I wouldn't be SOL if anything went awry. I've made absolutely certain this works, by unzipping and flashing on my own Continuum prior to uploading. It contains the system, recovery, and kernel partitions.
This file is also helpful if you need to get back to stock for warranty purposes, in which case you can manually un-root by using your favorite file explorer (I happen to prefer ES File Explorer), grant root permissions, mount system as rw, then manually delete SuperUser from /system/apps, su from /system/bin, and busybox from /systen/xbin. I hope this helps some of you who have been stuck.
You don't need to be rooted to flash this. Simply unzip, flash the .tar.md5, and you're golden. If you end up in restore mode after flashing, you probably need to do a hard reset, but this is unlikely as I tested it by flashing this a few times after installing various programs from the Market and never had to do a hard reset.
Don't forget to put your phone in Download mode by removing the battery, then holding the vol down button while inserting the usb cable. Good luck!

Yup, gotta wipe! At first it's so easy to forget this step. When you get to customizing your installation, you'll get to used to having to wipe it'll become second nature!
I'm so glad to hear this is coming in handy for you all! Now that you got this done, get yourself froyo, courtesy of imnuts: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197415
Ok after having installed EC03 Froyo via imnuts's thread. Everything was going fine except for some bugs here and there. Fast forward a couple weeks later and I try to fix those bugs by installing a stock odin rom via torque's thread (seems so foolish now that I look back on it). Which brings me to today and my bricked Continuum.
Well to explain further I tried to install the odin Rom only to receive a FAIL in the end (Selected the md5 file through the PDA option and proceeded to flash). Disconnected afterwards only to find out I can't even get the Samsung logo to show up or the phone to charge, but the phone will still go into download mode.
And this leads me to this thread with the same outcome. I've tried flashing this eclair? image only to end up with the fail message again. After the recovery.bin stage it just says "Complete(write) operation failed." Any help with this matter would be appreciated.
Edit: After some searching, gonna try it with imnuts' DL17 image. Will post results.
Edit2: No luck with that either. Guess I'll just wait until the Bionic gets released, but for now I'll have to dig up my dumbphone.

Read the OP from pastorbennett here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203597 and try the unbrick process. You can do a search for pastorbennett and trailblazer. Both have posted "recovery processes", or at least links to others that have posted recovery processes. They've saved my butt a couple of times... Except on my first phone that wouldn't go into DL or Recovery Mode. It would just flash the Samsung logo, over, and over, and over again... That happened before pastorbennett posted the unbrick info. Oh well, Verizon replaced it under the hardware warranty. Thankfully.
Looks like I didn't search hard enough.
Thanks for the link Moon. I will be trying this ASAP.
Hit a little bit of a snag trying to get it to work. It told me to install drivers for my device, however my Phone does not show up in the dropbox and the only related thing I can find is "Gadget Serial".
I've tried uninstalling the drivers, but Win7 is being a fool and automatically installing drivers for me.
Does anyone know why i get a 'FAILED' after trying to flash this with Odin? My phone is soft-bricked btw.

Okay, if you can, grab a different computer (either Windows XP or Windows 7) and install the samsung drivers from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1203597. The hint here with ANY Windows computer is to install the device drivers FIRST! (I've been a system administrator for about 20 years.) Then plug in the hardware. It usually makes the installations go MUCH smoother.
If you have to use your computer, try installing the Samsung drivers first, then plug the phone in.

The key to odin seems to be this:
1. Start odin.
2. Click the PDA button and select the odin TAR or MD5 file. (You can only do one. Not both.)
3. Make sure the phone is not plugged into the computer.
4. Make doubly sure the phone is not plugged into the computer.
5. Put your phone into download mode. (With the phone off, hold the Volume Down button and turn the phone on.)
6. Then plug the phone into the computer.
7. Start the odin flash and you should be good to go. Also, before unplugging the phone, make sure it says either success or failed. If it doesn't say anything, or says loading (or something like that), WALK AWAY! Go get yourself a cup of coffee, a soda, a nice cup of tea... Something. I recommend waiting at least 10 minutes. If the progress bar has not moved, in that time, okay, then pull the cable and the battery and start again.
I tried to do this, but when it boots into recovery mode, it says update.zip is gone. Any ideas why this might be happening? Also if it's like this, will Verizon take it back within the 14 day return policy without charging me anything?

I don't know, however, pastorbennett posted this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16600453&postcount=29. It might help? I use Linux at home to build most of this stuff, then use my wife's Windoze machine to flash. It just seemed easier.
Yes, you can use heimdall, you just need to extract this .tar and put the extracted files in the corresponding location in heimdall xD

Try a different USB port, different cable, and finally a Different computer.
Okay so what your saying is it will flash into: download mode If not and you see a black screen you could possibly try this so you will have to get an extra Mini USB to do so and a few other things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0&feature=youtu.be
If you are able to go into download mode ect there is no need for the above to be done. Or you might want to try looking at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
I am not responsible for what you do with this information though read through carefully to see if you want to take these steps on your device. From what I read and see some have had problems switching back to Odin when this program took over.
What Sendan has said here would probably help us more as I just jumped right into it for you. There may or may not be a need to do these steps listed here if we have more info on what is happening with your device.
Give me a detailed description of what you did, what you used, and what happens to it now.

Not sure if this will help, but I had a similar problem (PC wouldn't recognize phone in usb mode or download mode, Odin wouldn't connect, multiple cables had same result, remove/reinstall of Samsung drivers didn't help).
I ended up installing the Samsung drivers on a laptop that had never had them installed. Connection success! Was able to use Odin from that machine to flash back to stock Froyo/ED05.
After that, usb and download mode worked on the original PC. Same drivers that wouldn't work previously. Can't explain it, YMMV. It got me out of a jam.
Good luck.
maybe i freaked out. i put battery in just now and was able to boot into red recovery. yesterday i used it as an excuse to go buy a galaxy 2 on att. im trying an older backup. tried one a couple nights ago and it kept getting stuck. i have had the hardest time. started on a mac with heimdall and couldnt get it to work. went to a windows machine. couldnt get odin to work right with it. not sure now what i did to brick it. my win laptop i usually use is at my girlfriends. was just hoping to make this phone last til nexus prime.
Ok messing with it more. everytime i try something in recovery it will end up on the black screen with the phone to computer and the yellow sign between. heimdall (back on the mac) wont recognize it. not sure if i can do something in recovery
So Odin won't recognize your phone in download mode? You using the stock USB cord? Try different ports? Best thing would be to flash Stock ED05 and restart from there.
OK got it figured. Usb cord must be the problem. Now have cyanogenmod 7.1. But can't get gapps to install. Have tried rom manager and downloading it

Hi All,
I just got an SPH-i337 yesterday and attempted to Root + Install Mod.
I ended up rooting and installing Safestrap (TWRP 2.6.x.x). Upon first use I backed up my current OS to a removable SD card using the utility in TWRP. I then, because I was not clear on how to download install CM which was what I was going to, installed ROM Manager and selected CM without setting up a ROM slot. I think this is where I went wrong.
Upon reboot, I was unable to access the Stock ROM and had no options to go to CM. When I attempted to perform a restore from my backup on SD it failed as well and keeps going to the Android recovery screen (not TWRP).
I'm now just trying to go back to stock and have tried using both Heimdall and Odin to no avail. Odin at least provides an error message:
SW REV. CHECK FAIL: Fused:4, Binary:1. What does this mean? That I'm attempting to use an image (.tar.md5 file) which is not current? Is there a way that I can still recover my phone?
..also, please let me know if there are pieces of information that I'm missing. I don't have much to go off of since the firmware and other information (I believe) is not able to be accessed.
Again I just got the phone yesterday. I also have about 40 tabs open that are full of searches that I've been doing regarding this. As yet, no luck.

..also, please let me know if there are pieces of information that I'm missing. I don't have much to go off of since the firmware and other information (I believe) is not able to be accessed.
Again I just got the phone yesterday. I also have about 40 tabs open that are full of searches that I've been doing regarding this. As yet, no luck.

Safestrap only works with other TW ROMS, so your first issue was trying to use CM. Second, it's not official TWRP and is not even installed to the recovery partition so using ROM Manager was your second issue. Trying to boot into recovery normally will take you to stock recovery since it isn't installed in the recovery partition, there should be a splash screen that comes up after the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen asking to either press for recovery or continue. If that works, you can use the backup from there. If it's gone, you have to use ODIN. The reason you get that SW REV. CHECK FAIL is because you're trying to flash an older firmware than you have. Depending on if you were on 4.2.2 or 4.3 you will either need the MF3 or MK2 .tar.md5 respectively.

Thanks for pointing me to those files. I'm sure I did go wrong in a few places as I felt that I was largely just winging it.. There's a TON of information out there. Is there anything specific that I was more wrong than the rest?

Thanks everyone. Hell of an introduction to Android, I have to say considering I just got off the WinPhone bandwagon yesterday (been using it for ~7 years).

The s4 is a very difficult phone to use custom roms on. Once you're back up and running start here and read a lot before doing anything with it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42320391

Now you tell me - after I've been trying to do this for 12+ hours. Many thanks though - it looks like the MK2 AiO files are working.

Unfortunately, it seems that I can't use the method listed directly on that page on account of running the MK2 baseband. If I'm going to go forward it looks like I'll have to use SafeStrap and unofficial TWRM + TW mods for the time being.
Of course, if something about what I'm saying is wrong, I'd be glad to hear it.
