[Q] The noob question.. How to root and install custom recovery? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before you say that.. Yes I searched both in this and in other forums the answers to my questions and yes, I know what I am doing. I've owned an Oppo Find 5, a Nexus 7 and an HTC One M7. All rooted and with custom recovery (via adb on Mac).
Anyway, I can't get how to approach this SGS4. I know there are some problems related to knox, to my current firmware etc. Can somebody help me out giving me a step by step guide on how to install a custom recovery?
My firmware is KOT49H.I9505XXUGNE8
Thanks in advance.

Use towelroot to root your phone without tripping knox.
After using towelroot and getting your phone rooted, use flashify to flash a recovery. (This will trip knox)

Ohh and i forgot.
After you use towelroot, you must install supersu from the playstore. This will help you disable knox and its related apps

Haha..yeah..flash the latest stock firmware for your phone and youre unrooted
Plus supersu has an inbuilt unrooting facility.

You don't need root if you only want a custom recovery. Just flash it true Odin.

Actually, I just flashed TWRP and AntaresOne's CM12 Build. It worked like a charm. I guess that now I'll have to worry if/whenever I'd choose to revert it back to stock or to drop it to an assistance center.

I managed to get root, and with the help of the KNOX Disabler app, I disabled Knox nonsense, using RootExplorer, deleted the Knox files from /system/apps folder.
You need to flash Philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5 recovery, reboot. Switch off phone. Start phone in recovery mode. Flash CWM-SuperSu-v0.99.zip in Philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5.
Restart phone and run previously installed KNOX Disabler. I downloaded and installed the version 1.0.1.

I did not care about Knox warranty, however following your question I went into download mode. This is what I see:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-N7100
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (12 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
WARRANTY BIT: 0
That is all the information at present. I hope this answers your question.
Cheers.

Sorry--but this is a bit ambiguous--
"Flash CWM-SuperSu-v0.99.zip in Philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5."
I follow that we Flash CWM-Supersu-v.0.99. zip in Philz Recovery[which we have previously flashed to device with ODIN]--but what is the tar.md5 bit about--surely we don't reflash Philz in ODIN, again--or, are you simply referring to the, now, on board, CWM Recovery?
Not trying to be a 'smart-alec' just not following.
be a smart user and assume that he just copy paste the previous line because he dont want to retype the recovery name.
Hey, @YOSEFE, just another question--which ROM were you using before you Flashed this latest leak?
Reason I'm asking is that, I am currently on Dr.Ketan's 'hybrid' ROM which is a mix of XXMI6, and XXMJ2 plus mods taken from latest Note3 firmwares--and, it's great with many things not available to standard Note 2.
I would like your opinion of this latest leak firmware, XXUEMJ5, and how it compares--presumably it doesn't have any of the fancy Note 3 'gizmos'???
But, is it fast, smooth, clean, not buggy. etc....
BTW I'm not saying that Dr. K's ROM is not super fast, smooth, clean, etc...in fact it's excellent but, just wanting a comparison, to see if there was any good reason to Flash it.

Philz Recovery will have already been flashed by others, however I mention it because there will be those who have not flashed anything past the firmware or ROM.
If CWM Recovery works for anyone that is fine too, but I have flashed Philz Recovery on advice somewhere in a thread. (Lazy me, can't say which thread).

I was on XXMI6. The ROM can be a bit laggy. As someone pointed out to me, it is only a test firmware. Nevertheless, it is smooth enough for my daily use.
There are obviously no Note 3 goodies on the ROM. If those are very important to you, and considering the amount of trouble you have gone through to flash Doc's ROM, I would say keep Doc's ROM.

You are too late in responding to this.
That method you refer to was one of the two or so of available means. Since then, Chainfire has released superuser version that incorporates a disabler or uninstaller.

ROOT+SuperSU+Xposed P605 4.4.2 without tripping KNOX

The why
A lot of this has been said in other threads, however I decided to gather all the up-to-date (as of Jun 17, 2014) instructions and info in this thread to alleviate fears of the infamous 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID 0x1' and help people with the process. People with tripped KNOX can of course use this as well, however it won't untrip their devices, duh.
The cheers
First of all big cheers for Pinkie Pie (person who discovered the Linux kernel vulnerability that makes rooting without tripping KNOX possible), geohot (person that used the vulnerability to make a rooting app), chainfire (developer of SuperSU), rovo89 and Tungstwenty (developers of Xposed). Go and donate to these guys if you can!
The what
This post will tell you how to upgrade your P605 to 4.4.2, if you haven't already. And how to install SuperSU and Xposed all the while keeping your KNOX counter at 0x0, CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official and SYSTEM STATUS: Official!
Note: The versions in this text are just for reference - telling you what versions already worked. New ones will surely also work, so you should usually download the newest available.
The how
Firmware
4.4.2 NEE P605XXUCNE2 (any of the current 4.4.2 firmwares should be fine, although Samsung might use an updated kernel for the future versions, disabling towelroot)
From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53092676&postcount=1
Simple instructions available here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=30325 (you can also download the firmware from here, but download is slow for free accounts)
Root
From http://towelroot.com
No special instructions (it's a 1-click root)
SuperSU
Version 1.99.rc5 from http://download.chainfire.eu/448/SuperSU/
Extract Superuser.apk (in 'common') from the zip, install and run
Answer yes to the Disable KNOX prompt (don't worry, KNOX will not be tripped)
Xposed
From http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer (version 2.6.1)
No special instructions
The victory
Congrats! Now you should be on a rooted, SuperSUed, Xposed KitKat with warranty left intact! However before sending it to Samsung, e.g., for repairs, you should flash your original firmware, of course.
Can this be made to work with the SM-P600 on Android 4.3 unrooted? Any help will be appreciated. This would be a dream.
no.0ne said:
SuperSU
Version 1.94 from Google Play (Jun 17, 2014)
Answer yes to the Disable KNOX prompt (don't worry, KNOX will not be tripped)
At the end it will say it failed, however it will be working!
If you are annoyed by the 'failed' message for some reason, download an updated version from http://download.chainfire.eu/448/SuperSU/ (you'll have to flash it manually though) which supposedly fixes it.

You can wipe the tablet from recovery:
Turn tablet off
Turn it on holding Volume Up + Power Button until you see something on the screen
Wipe data/factory reset
Reboot
NEE will be fine for all P605, however I don't know if it works with something like P605V (US Verizon).

You can download the driver from the Samsung website, e.g., http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SM-P605VZKEVZW (don't worry that it is on the US page, the driver is the same for all Samsung devices)

No it doesn't. You dont seem to understand difference between "system status" in Download mode or inside of the ROM.
Here is couple of pictures to make you understand.
In the picture below you can see system status official. This will change, if you install CUSTOM ROM or CUSTOM RECOVERY. Towelroot does not change any of these data here:
In the picture below you can see Device status "custom". This can change to custom if you ROOT the device and/or install SuperSU or Xposed framework. This has NOTHING to do with the status in the Download mode as seen in the first picture.
I hope that people wouldn't mix these things, because they are rather easy to understand. Talking about things that you dont really understand will cause confusion and makes people asking more stupid questions.
Thank you!

I'm not quite sure, but it seems that in some cases the ROM can detect if it's rooted.
For me it changed to "Custom" after rooting with towelroot and SuperSU installation. I changed it back to Official with Wanam xposed.

Guide me please :D (Custom rom confusion?)

Hi XDA society and devs.
So I've moved to an S4 and I've already rooted it.
Sadly, KNOX figured it out so I'm at 0x1, however, this isn't an issue, I believe KNOX is only important for warranty purposes?
But anyway, I have rooted and installed custom recovery but what I want to ask is how will I go about installing this specific rom on my I9505?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283194
I'm really confused as to what I'm supposed to do, my BUILD number ends in FNB8 and this rom requires NGE8, so is it safe for me to install it without that number?
Do I need to do anything extra to install this rom or can I just move it directly to my storage and install it?
On WanamLites website, it says that the modem and the bootloader for NGE8 is optional?
So does that mean, I don't need to do any ODIN flashes before and after installing this rom?
MY main question is, I have a I9505, rooted and TWRP, can I install this rom straight away?
I appreciate any help, I'm fairly new to this phone and I have done a bit of research but I'm still a little confused.
Thanks to anyone that can provide me with an explanation and perhaps a brief guide. <3
Long Live, XDA.
It does not matter what version you have on your phone (eg FNB8/NGE8), so you can ignore that completely.
The bootloader and modem are for people that still have the old bootloader installed. You don't have that because you have KNOX. So you can also ignore that part.
Just flash away. The instructions are in the first post of that thread.

[share] about knox , root and odin firmware [please read before posting]

Hey friends:
im a normal member and everything above is only sharing
So you may get upset because of this thread
but i'll make things clear, everytime i open Q&A forum i see repeated questions everywhere
so here ill put some repeated answers about those stuff above
1. knox: well when you buy a new galaxy s5 the knox state will be 0*0 , but when you root your phone, flash custom recovery, custom kernel or custom rom this will trip knox and the knox state will be 0*1 and your warrenty will be void.
P.S: flashing firmware via odin will not trip knox
- so if you want to root without tripping knox you can go to this website : http://www.towelroot.com install apk by pressing the sign.
you will be able to root your phone quick from the phone itself but only if your phone on firmware from 3rd june or less
or your phone will not be rooted, but you can also root it by chainfire method from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537
you can also use mobile odin to flash firmwares but be carefull to be sure about your phone model.
you can install the app from playstore or from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
P.S: firmwares can be downloaded from here : http://www.sammobile.com
i hope you Moderators understand me and dont get angry or close this thread because im only sharing and thought it will help my friends and the new forum members.
and at last im a member and i have the right to post what it usefull to xda community
hope that i helped.

to flash firmware you can use computer odin v3.09 and then extract the md5 file from the firmware zip and put it in AP in odin (and maybe different version of odin says PDA)

AFAIK it will be fake, the only way to officially convert it to original is, uninstall root reboot and then reinstall root and SuperSU to user directory, not to system. This method worked for Roms prior to 3rd June.

Yes you can downgrade, i downgraded from NG2 to NE2 myself without problems. Just flash the NE2 rom with Odin and data factory reset afterwards. Then use TR to root again.

Yes, i only flashed the older firmware without a extra PIT file or bootloader file. Make sure to untick Auto Reboot first in Odin, after the flash pull the battery, wait for 10-20 seconds, boot into recovery and do a data factory reset and then the phone should boot normal and both the firmware and bootloader are downgraded to NE2 and KNOX remains 0x0. At least it worked for me this way and i expect it to work for others the same way

There is already a way to go back to stock if you ever do decide to root. Give it a try and if you want, you can flash stock again.
TWRP Recovery is now available for the Note 4 on Tmobile.

Can you do a video on how to unroot or at least some step by step directions?
I've tried to find an answer to this but can't seem to get a 100% sure answer. If I simply root, that's all, no custom recovery. Will I still get OTA if/when Samsung/T-mobile release an update (ie Lollipop)? Thanks!

Yes you should get OTA if you stay stock.
I had a Quick question about Twrp recovery
I have a tmobile note 4 sm-n910t. I have rooted with cf auto root and put the twrp recovery on and flashed the sd card fix. If I unroot via odin with the stock rom will android recovery be installed again or do I have to flash android recovery again to get rid of twrp recovery. If I do have to reflash android recovery again do you know where I can find it.
