My phone history is no small list i've tried pretty much everything out there From N97, to Blackberry 9700... HD2 cought my eye because i originally had the HD, however it seems that i'm getting the itch to move on to possibly the N900 or E72
Anyways just wondering what your experiences have been like with your device, and what are your most cool applications?
I change phones quite often too. My last phone in fact was a N900. Great phone yet I felt it was a bit slow. So far I am loving the hd2 and don't have plans to switch for quite some time. With every phone there was always something that bothered me. I thought Windows mobile would be it but so far it has been great. My only past issue was with a touch diamond being a bit sluggish, this hd2 definitely does not have that problem.
I could possibly see a jump to the N900, but an E72 (used to own an E71)?! No way. Using symbian is like jumping through a time warp to the past.
i know im lil off topic but i feel you guys on never finding perfect phone before one i got now. I dont mean to push android on WM guys but other then lil lag sometimes its been best phone for me.
It's gonna take a real monster of a phone for me to even think about considering getting rid of my HD2.
I've never been as happy with a phone as I am with this, and I don't think I'll start having wandering eyes for a looooooooong time!
wait till Winmo 7 comes. I reckon it will be a real sweet OS
I also change phones quite often. I always loved my iphone 3GS, but the HD2 has kept my attention for a while now. It does everything my iphone used to do for me.
I think once Microsoft implements Xbox live games into winmo, we'll all be laughing!

And AT LEAST a 4.7" screen. lol - I wouldn't really want one that big, but I definitely don't want smaller!

I wouldn't mind an even bigger screen. They could do it with the hd2 by removing the border around the lcd. Imagine nothing but screen corner to corner.
in the end it's still a phone.. doesn't have wheels or boobs..
The experience of the HD2 in most cases spoils you, and you will find it difficult to use a phone with a smaller screen. Apart from the earpiece quality at the higher frequencies, i am completly happy with this phone having owned about 10 different phones including iphone.

But I heard that on WM7 it will preform BJ's .
I must say, the HD2 is one of the best phone I came across.
I've worked over 2 years as the buyer for a multimedia chain and got the oppertunity to test drive a whole lot of device.
Also I'm using a ppc over 7 years now and untill the HD2 there were only 2 devices who have the "professional"/fun factor that the HD2 has.
And that was the Magician and the Universal.
Now I don't argue about the N900 because he has a "full" linux on it and for the linux guru's this is a wonderfull device. But if you aren't that good or fond in Linux then there is nothing special on the N900, and he is idd quite slow in normal use.
The other problem is that several years ago people did not compare a ppc with a normal phone (nokia symbian and etc...) but the mainstream users now also want a pcc thus the discussing is started... (certainly no personal blame meant)
I have no intentions of getting rid of the HD2 until there is a Nvidia Tegra powered platform available running WinMo7 with a screen equal to or bigger than the HD2.
The extra screen size compared to other mobiles on the market today really does make all the difference. I see people considering exchanging their HD2 for the Nexus One, but personally I find the screen a real letdown after being used to my HTC.
The one thing that does bug me about it is the low capacity battery included but, touch wood, so far I've managed to keep it running 24/7 by charging thru the night and every now and again in the car. Not enough of a let down for me to start looking at other handsets anyhow.

That is a serious battery drain, do you work so much on your device?
Eg I use my device constantly, 15 sms/day, 1 a 2hours phone, 30min surfing wifi and or hspda and I can do over a day and a half with one battery charge
This topics makes me laugh (not being offensive).
But it's pretty difficult to get bored of it. Of course we could have much more action on it but i'm sure in time we will have that also.
I cant see myself getting bored of the HTC HD2 anytime soon. Still got lots to do to it. Custom Roms, writing my own apps etc. Once i have it perfect then I will be using it until my contract runs out and i can get the latest super phone for free
Seeing as I have just discovered 800x480 encoding of 720p videos using WinMenc makes amazingly clear videos, and the demo of Electopia showing OpenGL 2.0 capabilities, I don't see myself getting bored any time soon.

Yeah, I use it constantly for the web and MSN (wifi/hsdpa/3g) as well as calls/sms. I could probably tweak it to last longer by disabling wifi/bluetooth etc when not connected but haven't found a good app to automate this yet.
Of course, once I find a 'cheap' car-cradle with built-in micro-usb (ie. put the phone in the cradle and it automatically starts charging - rather than fiddle around with cables and whatnot) the batterylife won't be a problem no more.

No where near board with it but as you've most likely tried everything there is for the HD2 why don't you list your best top 10 apps that you've tried and then we'll compare notes
For me the HD2 is my very first PocketPC/Smartphone. For me this phone is very powerful that it'll do fine for the coming years, if the phone can last that long. My only reason for switching to another phone is when the specs are at least equal to the one of the HD2, MUCH improved battery life and support of both capacative and resistive touch with adequate software and UI support. You can't get better than that. I'm not a gamer, so more power and a higher frequency is not necessarily my wish.

I am currently using the Xperia x1 and I love it but its time to upgrade. (im also selling one as I have 2). I live in NYC and of course I have ATT.
I am all but sold, but some personal experience from the highly respected XDA community would be nice.

Super screen, quite repsonsive, really bright. HD youtube looks fantastic on it. Really snappy to use. Internet is a joy to use.

the CON is as a phone it sucks. It's just too big. It took a while to make up my mind, but if you use your phone to make calls a lot, it may be a little big. I've even dropped it a couple of times due to it's large size. Support seems weak as well.
I got it a couple weeks ago and love. In my opinion its the best android device for At&t so far. The aria is a mid-lower end and the captivate feels cheap so i settled for the streak
When you first get it you will be amazed at how big it is but after using it for a couple weeks it feels normal and other devices (evo and iphone) feel SO small in your hand. One handed use sometimes is a bit hard when on the home screen but theres ways to go around that.
Browsing is awesome, haven't had to many issues due to the lack flash. Games are amazing on the 5" screen, haven't done too much movie watching but do watch the occasional youtube video.
Don't have anything bad to say about it other than its aspect ratio is set to "long" (think widescreen tv) while most android devices out there are "not long" (regular 4:3) so some apps won't look right but i have been seeing updates in the market for added streak support.
One downside though would be the connector/charger which is a PDMI connection. The cable that comes with the device is a tad too short and a spare cable from dell is $19.99!
Overall i'm happy with it and would recommend it if its your cup of tea. Also its a really big attention grabber. You don't understand how many times girls have came up to me and asked what it was and how i just pulled it out of my pocket. Then there is those that hate that say its too big as they play with their little iPhag phone..
I also came from an x1 and streak has been great for me, I can only think of glowing comments.
The obvious question is the size, but really its not that noticeable over any other phone (actually I would argue its less noticeable than the x1). If you want an approximation of the size, put a casio calculator in your pocket, keeping in mind that the streak is significantly thinner than it.
Plus as fone_fantastic mentioned its a real head turner, and seriously not as ridiculous to use as a phone as it seems, its a great device, highly recommended.

Ha! we arent supposed to either, but I will sneak it in and show guests sometimes, (my x1 that is)...I don't get the wow factor I used to but....Streaks a coming.
and Yeah i see tons of Iphones all my co workers have Iphone 4's and BB torch's, I cant wait till I get my streak.
The Streak does everything I could wish and more, if there's one bad thing it's that it is a bit fragile. If you decide to get one make sure you also get a decent protective case.
I don't use mine as a phone (data only contract), but as a MID I think it is great.
The screen size (and quality) is perfect for browsing while remaining truly portable. It is my first Android device and thanks to that is endlessly customisable and has got me tinkering 'under the hood again' which is something I hadn't realised I'd missed.
Build quality wise it isn't bullet proof but given that you take care of it you shouldn't have any problems.
I have a love hate relationship with mine to. I love it totally:
Web browsing: what other smartphone can you visit and read a website with not having to zoom in a scroll left and right to read text on any site?
Ease of use: it's a Android!
Reliability: the HTC HD2 is at this time the closest competition IMO, used to have one but it was so unreliable with it's wifi i soon started to hate the sight of it!
Size: fits in any pocket i have, including trousers.
Don't watch TV, but wait until you veiw youtube on it or start view photo's you'll never wnat a small screen again.
What i hate about it is when others who complain about the size! they new the size before they bought it right, so they obviously worry far to much about what others think of them! that's not the streaks fault it's theirs. If i'm standing at some busy junction and i answer a call, if others start looking then i think they just want one to and they're eyeing it up to see what it is
The galaxy tab will be released next month, but portable it's not! look at the size of the bezel around the screen! that would look strange, holding a netbook up to your ear
I know it's a bit off topic but the Samsung Tab won't be getting voice on the US side.

I love the streak, best parts are as said before, screen size, browsing experience (I use dolphin HD, skyfire and regular browser) each one i like for different things, I do browsing mostly on it.
cons. my streak won't charge but it's ok ( I paid half price), besides that, is that it doesn't have froyo which I don't mind at all, the other thing is that there are not many devs for this phone/tablet yet, but nothing to worry. Also the down side is the "PDMI" port, there aren't any third party chargers, cables, docks but I hope they'll come down eventually.
I'm skinny 5'10 and the streak doesn't feel all that big when against my head, no one even notice when I'm on the BIG phone talking to someone, I don't get any weird looks, but when I lay that "flipflop" on the table everyone looks at it and wants to have a go.
I've used the X1 and had several HTC's as you can see on my sig, one thing tho is that you might miss the physical keyboard, but you'll get around it, the screen is so big that the on-screen keyboard are not bad at all, I personally use "multi-touch keyboard" and that does the trick for me.

And I'm wondering will there be a Streak II ? Or any other phone like it in 2 years time.
I can just envision my self wandering around with a forlorn look on my face muttering "I want 5 inches, I want 5 inches" (and probably get arrested when i walk past a school)
I'm in love with this phone device. The screen is awesome. Very responsive and big enough for me to type fairly accuratly on.
Talking on the phone feels normal. I didn't expect it to, but I've had only minor issues with calling. I have found myself sometimes hunting for the speaker but find that I can hear fine if I just hold the Streak a hair away from head. Basically my fat head was muffling the sound if I had the phone resting against it without having the speaker right over my ear.
I do wish that Dell would answer someone's post about the screen failures. I suspect there was a build quality issue with at least the early Streaks.
I also wish someone would get 2.2 working on a Streak so I can do remote desktop and have full exchange support, oh and Flash.
To add 1 more con, there is no VPN support if you use windows vpn LP2T, but hopefully it'll get sorted on 2.2.
I was starting to panick somewhat after I ordered the Streak & agreed to sell my current HD2 to a friend soon as it arrives, and then came across some negative reviews and discovered many people were having problems on this forum with the firmware issues related to upgrade to Android 2.1 & the limitations of stock Android 1.6. (which version are u positive guys using?).
Now having read this thread, you guys have got me optimistic & excited again!
Can't wait for it arrive next week. Hopefully I will once again feel "...this is the best phone I have ever owned", just like I did when I got my HD2, and the HTC HD before that. I don't think I could bear the disappointment of feeling I have taken a step back in the eternal quest for the ultimate personal communication device which I embarked on about 15 years ago with the Nokia 2110, followed by a variety of iPaq (HTC-made) PDA's, Ipaq phones & various HTC-branded devices.

Question regarding the size, with my X1 I rarely ever hold it to my face I always use the Stereo headset that came with it, does the streak have on also (bundled) is it any good?
another ex-X1 user here. Love the streak and can't think of another device I could replace it with currently. In fact it's hard to leave it alone and the battery gets quite a hammering
Yes you get a stereo headset with the streak and it's not bad at all really. I don't use it myself (got some Ultimate Ears 'phones which sound incredible and I only use handsfree over BT in the car) but it should be fine...
I've kept the X1 for when i'm doing "rough stuff", like photographing 4x4 events - can just shove it in a pocket out of the way whereas the Streak would probably get damaged. For everything else though (especially in the car for satnav, music etc) it's one hell of a good device.
I really hope 2.2 makes it over cos that last little piece of the jigsaw - embedded flash in the browser - will make it a stunner. Keep an eye on the thread about USB hosting as well. If that can be actioned there are a lot of possibilities there too. For example I want to be able to download the occasional shot from my camera to check on the Streak's fairly well calibrated screen. I can also resize and send if necessary and POSSIBLY even back up the camera's memory card! (IF it works of course!!)
Everything works better than it did on the X1. BT streaming, web browsing, emulation (PSX for example), graphics, user interface (and i was using a custom WAD desktop on my X1), call quality, you name it
Up until I got the Streak I thought the X1 was the best phone I'd had but this is a whole other level!!

I've been following that thread, with the hope that one could maybe use the USB port with a serial port adaptor to connect to Cisco routers and maybe run an Android equivalent to Windows Hyperterminal app to configure Cisco routers? I guess that's a bit far-fetched since no Android drivers would be available ...but as you mentioned, there are many other possibilities to this USB Host functionality which are likely to work.
Which version of Android are you currently running tho? Is it stock or modified?
Can you get a full 12hrs availability from the battery daily with say, 2 hrs voicecalls, & 2 hrs HSDPA internet plus a few sms's?
Also wondering if you know what the USB connector on the Streak is called? Can't see myself unplugging the cable back & forth between my bedroom, the car & the office every day. Should be easy to make up the USB host cable as well as a few spare charging cables while I'm at it if I can source the connector somewhere.

I generally have to charge by about 3pm after starting at 7am BUT the screen is pretty much constantly on during that time and as far as I can see from my use the screen hammers the battery more than anything else (it's surprisingly good on wifi at home if the screen gets turned off regularly). At home it'll go all day with occasional use and usually MSN Talk running in the background.
Not entirely sure what you mean by what the USB connector is called. Do you mean the PDMI one that attaches to the phone? Well, I say PDMI but it's not 100% proved yet is it, as far as I can see from what I've read. It does seem almost certain that it is though. If you find a source let us all know!!

So you use the Streak like a PC - screen on & in use almost continuously? Based on that it would probably be safe to say it would last me all day with less than 4 hrs screen on time (screen is mostly off during phonecalls I guess due to proximity sensor) & fairly typical/light mobilephone use. That's great to know, thanks.
Indeed, perhaps the name PDMI will help me find it somewhere in Asia, but probably best to have a closeup picture of it. As long as someone makes a connector that fits the slot and we can find out Dell's pinouts, should be ok. When my unit arrives next week I'll at least have the USB cable to check the connector for myself .
Anyways, my apologies to the OP for having gone a bit off topic there.
I'm convinced now I'll be happy with the Streak, despite some minor challenges no doubt. Besides, if it turned out to be perfect, how would we find a worthy upgrade in another year from now....

Just wanted to post some thoughts. Recently bought the Atrix 4G. Over the past 7 months ive had 7 different phones. Here are my opinions:
1) iPhone 3GS:
Well everyone knows about this phone, so i wont go in much detail.
Pros:
Fast Phone, Everything worked seamlessly, battery was pretty decent, TONS of apps to choose from, iTunes integration (i hate itunes personally).
Cons:
Its apple, no customization w/ out have to jailbreak every update, Everyone and their grandma has the same phone.
2) Nexus one:
One of the most beautiful, well put together phones i have ever used. Really opened my eyes to android. Its a pity it didnt get more advertising.
Pros:
The form of the phone w/ the trackball, build quality for the phone was premium. Pure android. Blazingly fast, newer phones lagged while this phone was hauling. Battery life was decent
Cons:
No multitouch (which you dont really realize how important it is til you dont have it). Screen wasnt as bright or detailed as the newer screens. Parts and accessories were hard to come by locally.
3) iPhone 4g:
I strongly dislike apple, but i had to see what the fuss was about.
Pros:
Very well put together phone, extremely fast, access to large app store, very little lag, battery life was very good. screen was excellent quality, tons of accessories.
Cons:
Its apple, jailbreaking was becoming increasingly difficult because of baseband and OS. Everyone has this phone which makes me dislike it (personal reason but meh, we all like to be different). Everything is based through iTunes which i dislike.
4) Windows 7 Phone (samsung focus)
At first i thought the phone was stupid looking but then i decided to try out the metro UI.
Pros:
Fast phone, the metro UI on the inside of the OS (once you actually get into the apps) was brilliant, ease of use (good for most, bad for me since i like to change everything), BING! ( i really like bing after using the phone, integration was awesome). Zune integration was stellar. I really prefer zune (which i had never used before), to iTunes.
Cons:
There are alot. First, no multitasking or fast app switching. Relaunching an app every time you want to read a text message is annoying. Having a timer countdown and expecting it to go off when finished and it not going off because your screen wasnt currently on the timer app is very frustrating. Microsoft updates.... will happen eventually. The copy and paste update was 2 months late. That was just copy and paste and a few other touches. Lost faith in microsofts abilities in updating the OS. Lack of accessories such as car mounts etc... Battery life was pretty bad.
5) Blackberry Torch 9800
had to try it out on my quest to try every os. I actually came to like this phone
Pros:
BIS security, everything is encrypted. Email was the best i ever had. Had everything pushed to my phone from blackberry servers w/ only a couple mins delay after they arrived in my actual inbox. Form factor was awesome. First physical keyboard and it was really nice. No need to jailbreak/ unlock phone. Everything was open for user changes. TONS of options for everything. Battery was amazing, best ive had. Easily lasted 2 days of heavy usage. Multi tasking and multi touch like a pro.
Cons:
The phone came out in nov 2010. It has a 600 mhz processor. Its just not enough to support many games or intense apps. It saves the battery but in a field of emerging dual-core phones, they have to be more competitive in term of pure power. Screen was dim and resolution sucked. Lock button was designed by a monkey. couldnt put in pocket w/out unlocking the phone. Internet was slow, streaming apps (like pandora) was a joke, always skipping and lagging.
6) Palm Pre 2
Once again, it was next on the list. It would OS of the year on some poll.
Pros:
The OS is excellent on this. I really do like the cards and the gesture support. If there is one thing i could take away from this phone, it would be the OS. Just awesome and intuitive. "jailbreaking" was easy to do, and there is a 3rd party market "preware" that has lots of apps and "patches" that change things for your phone. Screen was nice, physical keyboard was nice (prefer the blackberry one more though). 1 ghz proc was able to launch apps and play 3d games decently. Dungeon hunters and angry birds etc...
Cons:
Battery life!! 1050 mah battery is abysmal. worst of all the phones ive tried. 5-6 hours of medium usage max. If you were playing a game, you better have it plugged in. Even playing solitaire drained the battery. I was able to use up the whole battery in 2 hours of 3d gaming. The form factor of the phone was a little kiddish. Did a little curve to the phone when keyboard came out. Phone is creaky. Started to have an "oreo" effect w/ in 2 weeks of usage. All hinges were loose and wobbled to the side. App market was sparce and there werent many new advances into the market. Screen was small and keyboard was... wierd. hard to describe but i didnt like it. Internet speeds sucks and streaming was not existent. Took 10-15 mins for pandora to launch and start playing. 2 min gap in between songs. if you paused a song it was take about 5 mins to start again if it started again.
7) Motorola Atrix 4G
Decided i needed to get away from kid hardware and back on the edge of tech
Pros:
Dual-core sexiness. psuedo "4g" speeds. Large screen. Nice resolution. Front facing camera. Fingerprint scanner. Build quality is nice. I prefer pure google experience, but i just installed spb shell and i love the interface and i dont have to deal w/ motoblur. This thing is blazing fast w/ no lag. Streaming music and video is easy. Navigation is brilliant. Oh how i missed android navigation. Tons of markets in the app store. Battery life is brilliant for the amount of power this phone is pushing. I easily get through the day of heavy usage. SD slot is a plus.
Cons:
I do get the occasional force close, androids open market is more open to malware. Motoblur = not up to date OS. Wish it was stock android. Finger print scanner is good idea but some times takes longer then just doing to the dots. Market place is kind of a cluster f***. Last thing is i keep pushing the speaker instead of the button on the back of the phone when im in the dark when i try to unlock it. Im afraid im going to break the speaker on accident lol.
All in all, the Atrix 4g is the best phone ive had, and i have had a lot. Hopefully this will help somebody if they decide to read through it all. Feel free to leave comments on your past experiences w/ other phones.
I agree with everything said here, and the lock button was designed by a monkey on the atrix as well.

I loved nokia - symbian phones, but the OS is outdated, as well, the technology used to build the phones is from stone age...
Used all different versions of iPhone, iPhones are great and all, but they have same different boring UI. No customization until phone's JBen. Apple wants to monopolize the market with their iOS, great, go ahead and try, i'm not in.
Used HD7 as current WP7 and different bunch of phones with Windows 6.5, they are all okay, WP7 has potential but lack of applications is what keeping me away from trying their phones, also for some reason Windows phone release is really slow compared to Android phones in current market.
Android. Great potential, way better feeling while using the phone than other OS. Honestly, market may not have rich application selection as compared to iOS, but Google's getting there.
One thing I don't like about and I am not pointing at any negative aspect, what I don't understand is why the hell in the world every second software/application developer is running after iOS app development? Don't they see the potential in Android? Don't they see the growth? Just a simple comparison, EA mobile has more than 25 games/apps for iPhone, but only 8 or 9 for Android... And to be honest, I don't like it... I want all of the developers on board come up with an app for android... this is one of the reasons I would still like to have an iPhone on me, just to kill time, there is tons of apps you can just keep playing, reading, doing something with your phone... Again, all of these is my personal opinion... if someone have anything to say about it, well... go right ahead...
But, at the end, I am sticking with my Google Phone... To be precise, Moto Atrix and HTC G2... Lovin'em.

I'm on verizon and I have an upgrade available next tuesday and am looking at using it as soon as possible(totally frustrated with old phone.) Originally, I was thinking I would like the Droid Bionic, and since its release date is so close to my upgrade date, it seemed like that would be the route to go. However, I recently started doing some research on where I could find the best prices for a phone, and found the discounts on Amazon to be excellent! At this point, I can't imagine the Bionic costing anything less than $300, maybe 250 on amazon, but the Xperia Play is being offered for FREE!! The $300 price tag is a little hard to stomach, and I'm thinking if I get the play now, I can wait for the 2nd generation of LTE devices without the battery concerns.
I'll admit that I hadn't really considered the device before because I didn't think I'd be much of a gamer on a cell phone. I play games now, but they are mostly like angry birds, words with friends, robo defense, and other simple games without a real need of a dedicated controller. The phone being free, however, compelled me to do a bit more research.
Now, after reading nearly every review and watching nearly every video on the play, I am seeing more and more things I like about the device. I even went to the verizon retail store and played around with one (and some of the other contenders) for awhile. There are a few things I like about the Play, and some others that are of a little concern, and I was hoping that some of these questions could be answered by someone who has used the device for a period of time.
Some Good points:
I really like the feel of the phone, it feels different and "unique" even when closed compared to the endless range of black slabs out there. Being a guy who doesn't need to cram the phone into a pair of skinny jeans, I don't find it too bulky to handle.
Is this comfortable for everyday usage, though? Does the phone feel solid in the hands without all the security devices on it like in the store? Are the buttons workable? I wouldn't say I have exceptionally large hands, but they aren't small either, will I find it awkward to press those small front buttons or the unlock/power button?
Seeing a vanilla build of gingerbread was very, very nice. It reminded me of handling the nexus S and how impressed I was when I first saw it after using HTC Sense for nearly 2 years. Is there any real functionality lost because of this? Also: Since It is a vanilla build, I would assume OTA upgrades may be easier to obtain(sort of like the original droid) Does anyone know of Sony's plans to continue support for this (Maybe up through ICS)? I have been stuck with 2.1 for what seems like forever, and don't want this to be a problem in 2 years when I'm trying to download an app that isn't supported in older versions of Android. I'm not opposed to rooting, but I think that manufacturer support says something about what a company thinks of its products.
OMG THE SCREEN!!! I don't know about anyone else, but to my eyes, that is just about the best looking screen I have ever seen, even compared side to side to the qHD display on the Droid X2 I prefered the display on the Play hands-down. However, I am wondering if the front coating is durable. I don't think I would want to put a screen protector between my eyes and that gorgeous LCD.
In general:
Is the phone responsive for everyday tasks? (Gmail, Calender, Texting, Phone Calls, Internet Browsing, Music playback, Youtube, Facebook, Maps, Weather, News Widgets (such as pulse)) I use these all daily quite frequently and it can sometimes take up to 30 seconds just to open up my messaging app after receiving a notification of a new message. I doubt any more modern phone could be this bad, but any hint of slowdown now could be a bad omen of what is to come. I'm not too concerned with multitasking except for maybe loading a webpage while I switch over to messaging to answer a text, or for running an update service for weather notifications in the background.
Is it easy to type on compared to other phones in the 4 inch class? Does the shape or design of the phone impede this in any way? It was kind of hard to tell in the store due to the security devices in place.
With the usage described above (checking email, facebook, news, weather, etc. approximately once per hour, with about 30-45 minutes of phone calls, 20-30 texts, and less than an hour of gaming a day) would it be reasonable to expect this phone to last all day on a single charge? I currently have a large extended battery for my phone and it would be nice to not have that extra bulk. If this isn't reasonable, are there extended batteries/covers available for the play?
Is the lack of internal storage a problem, or is it possible to install apps to sd? (and is the speed acceptable if done so)
Any general bugs/glitches that should be known before deciding on this phone?
Anything that the phone might be a little zippier at if it had a dual core processor (besides more graphically intense games)?
How is the call quality/ability to hold a signal? This has been stated in a few reviews, but I am hoping the that issue has been fixed as of now (specifically the phone reverting to 1x in an EVDO area) I am in the city so signal strength shouldn't be an issue, but the ability to hold 3G definitely is.
How is the camera? I'm not looking for an SLR replacement, just something that will take snapshots where you can tell what something is without excessive noise/blotchiness. Is the front camera as horrible as they say? No one seems to post examples of pictures taken with that. Also, there is some confusion as to the HD recording capabilities of the phone. From what I have gathered, it is possible, but there are several steps involved. What are these steps?
Any possibility of Netflix support in the future?
In general, are you owners happy with your decision, and is it one you would repeat if you had to do it today (given the advantage of the Play being at least $130 cheaper than my next consideration, the Droid X2)

The phone feels pretty solid for everyday use, and the curves make it easy to hold in a pocket.
If your worrying about a screen protector, SURPRISE. Theres already one on there.
I've never had any problems with the apps for everyday use. They open quickly, and pulse works quite well.
Some people find battery an issue, I dont. In between trains I do about 2 hours of gaming, check email every 2 hours, post Twitter updates, and still have half a charge by the end of the day.
The camera isent as great as other phones, but it works.
For Netflix support, you can find the .apk someone on the XDA site, and it works perfectly.
Get it if your into gaming on the touchpad.... Otherwise I don't see why you should.
For a phone that has nearly the same specs as the galaxy s, it runs a lot smoother. There are no lag issues, it has ran everything I've thrown at it smoothly.

I m using the PLAY too, and I found my HD2 with android runs a bit smoother.
the SE software is improving thou, it has been 2 updates, and the speed actually increase after each update.
Only get it if you want to have a game pad or the NAVIGATION pad (up down left right)
i love using the play with navigation pad.
I cant find any other current android phone with navigation pad other than the play.

I'd say it's worth it.
The only real thing that might keep people from taking it seriously is the fact that it's not a dual-core phone. When you actually see it's performance though, you notice immediately and forever after that it's silky smooth even on a single-core.
It's replaced damn near everything I use; and, most importantly: manages to be great at gaming without being mediocre at anything else.
I'm definitely interested in gaming on the gaming pad, as I can say pretty definitively that the reason I don't play too many games on my phone is because the controls are cumbersome or feel like the games are "dumbed down" to be able to be played with lackluster controls.
I have seen the performance a good single core phone can have (including that of the Play), but am kind of wondering, is it a little too late in the game to even be considering anything other than a dual core phone (I'm having this same delemia over possibly going with the Droid charge) I skimped a little on my first android phone, and because of my experience with that, I am scared that something I get that isn't top of the line now will be utter crap in 18 months - 2 years time.
The combination of acceptable (or great, according to some) performance, the game pad, and the price (in that order) make this appealing.

Feels solid, awesome games and its gonna get better soon as Playstation are soon to announce PSP games for the Xperia Play.

I got the xperia play around a month ago maybe 3 weeks ago. The phone is very solid its super fast i have not had any slow down with the phone to this date so dont worry about the core cpu's yet.
The phone is awesome, its amazing for gaming and if your still not into that its still an awesome phone i would say its the best single core phone you can buy.
The only thing i am disappointed about with the phone is the **** wi-fi radio it has terrible signal, it keeps me connected most of the time but around my house i usually only have 2 bars but with my brother's iphone and my old android phone i would be having 3 - 4 bars.

Yeah i have the same issue, Galaxy S II has full reception and my Xperia only gets around 2-3 bars although it does keep reception. Thinking Sony might update the modem driver with the next update *fingers crossed*
Yea, the wifi is definitely weaker then most devices. I went out to buy a netgear range booster router and it fixed my problem though.... I can't believe how good netgear routers are...

the only reason i can think to make you buy the phone is the gaming pad. that is all. you will never get a better gaming experience on any other latest phone like Galaxy X II or Droid. i mean never
its a gaming phone and target for gamer. i strongly suggest you look for other phone if you not into gaming. i just dont want you to regret it when you bought it.
regarding the wifi, the signal reception is working great if i point the device to the router directly

Like other have said, if you game on your phone get it. If not, get something else. All the rest is just waving your hands.
It is a solid android phone with a game pad. Nothing more, nothing less. If you never slide your game pad out, why carry it around? If you do slide it out, supported games (including emulators) are a completely different experience to every other phone. I cringe thinking about what Minecraft would be like if I had my thumbs all over the screen.
before i go rambling about my previous phones, all i can say is:

putting that aside, i was previously using a hd2 running android via the sd. i also had a htc desire issued by the office. i was content with both phones until the office decided to get rid of the desire. apparently, marketing was able to strike up a good deal with the network provider and thus issued us a bunch of iphone 4s. with the desire gone, i was thus left with my hd2 to run android. the problem was, i wanted a purely dedicated android device given that i would most likely never visit windows again. don't get me wrong, the hd2 is fantastic as it's reputed to be the most versatile (and hackable) phone. i've been reading up on the xperia arc as it has nice reviews. however, i was attracted to the xperia play even more because of in my opinion it's taken the lead in the "swiss army" fight amongst phones. i'm not a true gamer but i have enjoyed playing ps1 back in the days. with that, the play allows me to revisit those days and once again play with my fav games.
secondly, the phone itself is fantastic overall. the interface is fluid, i've experienced no hangs or freezes (not counting the psx game that doesn't run with fpse). battery is awesome and i really love the loudness of the media player. this was one of my gripes when i was still using my hd2: the volume needed to step up a notch or 2. i got myself the white xperia play and people in the office are really loving it.
i've already rooted my unit. as i have home and contents insurance i'm not worried about damaging my play. but say i did run into a situation which results in my phone being bricked/damaged/etc. i would most likely get my insurance company to replace it with the same. unless i find the other phones such as the evo or sensation coming up with a gamepad AND something else that the xperia play doesn't have, i'm definitely sticking to this phone for quite a long time.
Actually, if you are not into gaming.... After you get the phone and see the games available... You will be!

The N8000 Samsung Galaxy Note 10" has been released in August 2012, this is 4 Years ago.
Most smartphones have a lifespan of 2 years. There are a lot of people who buy a new one every year. Yet there are some others who keep their phone for 3-4 years or even Longer.
So how about this Tablet?
Do you still use it like on the first day you bought it?
Does it fulfill a different usage now?
Or did you give it away to someone else?
For me I've bought this Tablet when I started studying because I thought the Pen input would be pretty cool.
I've used it for about 3-4 months and then Switched to a Windows 2:1 convertible. After that I've mainly used it at home for media consumption.
Right now I use it with lirokas Marshmallow Build and mostly stream Videos. I still get 6-8h batterylife out of it, and while I fully agree that the processor is getting really slow I don't see no reason at all to upgrade to a new tablet.
So what's your story?

Gave mine to my laddie when I bought my Note Pro 12 ; he uses it daily (Temasek's cm13). It's still as brilliant as the day I got it.

I bought this tablet in November 2013 and I used it daily during about one year, mainly for a video, games and web usage, until I was fed up with the lack of support from Samsung that made this tablet completely outdated.
I completely rediscovered it in last January, when I decided to put it out of the drawer where it stood in order to try to root it and to flash Lirokoa's ROM that I had heard of on this great forum. Since then I use it again daily both at home and for work with a bluetooth keyboard, this awsome ROM just gave this tablet a second life

My girlfriend has/had one that she used daily. For quite some time. I personally felt it was rediculously unresponsive and slow..but this made some sense given she has the thing JAMMED FULL of free app games and wallpaper apps. Early in its life. I attempted to get her to let me root it to make it run good..no go. Last week however her most.favorite game, Sims FreePlay. Wouldnt load..crashed 90% of the time before you could play it.
So she handed it to me to see if I could fix the issue. I want able to make it happen. In the process if attempting. I Deleted a bunch of undeniably trashable apps l, app data, and/or cache. Both the system and user areas were Extremely full.
After doing that l it was yet oddly slugish..yet faster than when she handed it to me. I gave it back to her..in working condition. and she messages me at work the next day Asking me WTF DID YOU DO TO MY TABLET. It was suck boot loop at samsung logo. (Keep in mind this tab is %100 stock) Recovery wont load, Download mode works but flashing anything and/or everything simply either completes sucessfully per odin..yet doesnt help. or fails(formatting pit stuff).
After spending a whole week scavanging the internet. I determined the emmc is borked. Probably similar to the S3 SDS problem. Tried absolutely everything suggested and still wound up in the "didnt work for me" catagory. I tentetively have determined I basically have a hard bricked tab that probably even Jtag wouldnt fix..aside PERHAPS..from re/-flashing the emmc firmware with a jtag...that I don't own.lol.
replacment motherboards still run over $100, which isnt viable imo because I can buy a fuly funtional used tab for alunder $150..and a few bucks more..could potentially get a tab 10.1 2014 if Iil I was patient.
I feel bad. she believes me NOW for the most part that it didnt directly die due to what I did to it. More it died WHILE i was wokring on it due to a bugged or defective internal Memory chip.
I'm probably going to buy her a replacment tab..because she misses it. Maybe steal the motherboard from the replacment and put it in "hers" l. Then when I feel froggy try to replace the emmc and use the tab for my own purposes.
If you do a lot photo editing,adjusting, alterting. PS Touch with and S-pen @10.1" is fantasticly the best photo editing setup I've ever used...thats my proposed best Use for it
I bought mine a year ago, as a replacement for my ASUS tablet. I used it mostly for gaming and video streaming, which has better performance than at least my previous tablet. Months later I found out how to flash TWRP into it and flash a CyanogenMod ROM into it, which inspired me to learn more about modding android devices.
But that was before I accidentally dropped it on a carpet floor and gave it an LCD color issue and a distortion problem.
So I had to buy another one, which was the 2014 model. Not as proud as I was with my old one though.
I still use it, but I have to use a separate program to remotely see what the heck I am looking at without straining my eyes. The only thing I use it for now is modding and ROM building, which I am learning about.
It was an amazing experience with this one.
I bought it when it came out.
Daily use as a TV viewer propped up on a bookstand in the kitchen and for casting music to the hifi. It's still well overspecced on the hardware front for humble uses like this.
The screen is not as good as a newer Tabs (I have a Tab S2 myself) but for highly compressed 'TV over wifi', and considering I'm watching from quite a few feet away, it makes little difference.
I hardly ever used the stylus bit of it, unlike my Note 4 which still has very frequent stylus use for making jottings at work when walking around a job with a customer. I use MS OneNote for this purpose. Never got on with S-Note.
I've had mine for about 4 years. Recently rediscovered to watch some Netflix.
Now I am trying to figure out how to get it to 4.4 at least. (For PlayStation Vue)

I still use mine, bought it Oct 2012! Been on many travels with me and only recently started having problems with the WiFi.
Bought mine off eBay. Rooted and installed gnabo rom , works a treat for everything I need it for; surfing, email, games, video, documents. Hell I can even read my old Spider-Man comics on it. Upgrading to the new models is great if you can afford it or "need" to, but this old tablet does everything I need and barring accidents I can't see the value in upgrading it. I personally don't need the newest things. This tablet, with a little knowhow is upgradeable anyway with ROMs up to marshmallow available on this very site.
i still use this,,,4-core cpu is still powerfull for watching movies and using netflix....

Yeah, i still use(d) it, i just finished studying. I got it 3.5 years ago and used it several hours daily. With LectureNotes, i wrote 1500+ pages. I rooted it after one month of usage, i just couldn't stand the Samsung overlay.
Today my girlfriend told me, she wants to have a tablet when she goes to school again - immediately told her, she'll get mine. Now i either install an old ROM i had great experiences with or a new one and hope for the best... I tried to use it for media, but i'm just not the guy for it. I prefer just to use my smartphone instead of grabbing a tablet first. However, in about a month i'll get another tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab E), as you almost get it for free if you buy an S7, which is what i will do.
It still remains the only android device i NEVER had any problems with, apart from a bit of dust under the screen.
I'm still happy with mine although am dealing with a rapidly draining battery now and am looking for a recommendation for a vendor. Currently dealing with one that has send a second battery and it has issues... am not in the mood to swap it out again.

Yup, bought mine used, liked it so much, I bought another one for my wife refurbished!
Used to use it exclusively for taking notes in class, but since I've been out of school, it's our kitchen table TV (cut the cord, we do YouTube & SlingTV).
The other one is usually in storage, finds use when we go on trips, we both have tablets for movies, shows, etc.
liroka's CM13 builds are rock solid & he still updates builds! Makes this old sucker lightning fast. I don't foresee buying a new tablet, partially because I don't really have an extensive use for one, but mainly because this one works great!

I bought one of these when my Acer Iconia A500 suddenly died one day. I bought mine new in Dec 2013 and use it for whatever I need to do (browsing, email, shopping, reading news, etc.) when I want a larger screen than my smartphone. I rooted it in January 2014 using a thread on Android Forums, and it is still currently in that state, also using TWRP 2.6.3.0. Although it works fine, I happened across your thread because I came here wondering what ROMs might have been made for this tablet, just to try something different for a change. I see mention of "liroka's CM13" in previous posts. If I wanted to try that, could I just install that ROM using the stock firmware and from the stock rooted state it is in now, or would I need to update something first?

A couple of years ago I removed the Samsung bloat and installed Omni (KitKat 4.4.4). I'm still happy with it, it does everything I want/need, has a good battery life, etc.
One of these days I'm going to give it to my wife, who is disabled and has an iPad. Due to some of her disabilities she cannot work with iPad.
So actually this very moment I'm looking for a good replacement. I like the size and the pen -- suggestions anyone?
