Can anyone who has the HD comment on the quality of the camera?
From reviews I've read it seems it's not as good as other 5mp devices, but I would think it would be a massive improvement to that of the Touch, Cruise, Diamond... (in respect to frame rate and photo quality, not just increased size)??

I can not compare it to the Diamond, but to recent Nokia phones, the Iphone and my LG Viewty. And i personally think, the pictures are better and have better colours. also when taking pictures in a room, where the light is not that good for cams it seem to take bright and clear pictures. (you may remember the pictures they took on this french site one month ago. the Iphones pictures where pretty dark and red, while the same pictures taken by the HD where bright and clear)

They have used a cheep plastic lens....
So typically HTC.. they want to make a phone with all the top feautures on paper... and spend a lot of money on parts to do that.... while trying to save some money on the not so important parts (according to Htc) and then they ruin a lot of the performance of the phone because they want to save a few bucks....
hi all i have taken about 4hours today testing the camera to the end of my will, now i hope this thread will help other and i intend to include pics of every content and do a full review of the htc hd2 camera but here's a few samples while i get the review on the way
TIPS FOR BETTER PICTURES
- turn off wide-screen in the settings for true 5mp, if u have it on u get lower res Normal screen = 2592 x 1944 / Wide-screen = 2592 x 1552
- set white balance to the sunny settings in all condition not auto or u will get weird colors with most of ur pics (see samples below)

Also, as soon as I get my HD2 (which has been stuck in a post office all week-end... grrrr!!!!!), I will try to take a reference picture of a netural gray card, and then subtract it from real-life photos using photoshop. This should really get rid of the magenta color cast in the middle of each photo, though it would be a pain to have to do this extra step for each picture one wishes to keep...
Purely amazing? For me these look barely usable, but then I'm coming from an i8910, so I guess it depends on what you're used to...

Those who come from WM phones the HD2 produces some of the best images and videos. At least there is a substantial improvement from the predecessor Touch HD.
Coming from the best camera phones from Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc. the quality is just passable.

the htc hd2 has not got a micro mode touch focus is what i used for all pics

hi mate some pointers,
1) Samsung i8910 OmniaHD = 8mp camera and omnia camera are good
2) we need to see full unedited pics to compare noise

They might be a big improvement for a HTC device, but they are very much inferior to the photos from my old N95, or even my original Fuji 3MP digital camera.
Photos from an i8910 or a Satio are in a completely different league.
Still, I guess I should be grateful that HTC have made some improvement in this area, and I'm not actually buying the phone for it's photo taking ability.

I notice a red tint in every sample pictures or videos taken with HD2 (I don't have one, seeing samples). Is this true or I need an eye check?

This pics looks like ****. At 100% have a lot of noise, bad colors and a constant pink tint in the center of the screen.
The camera of the HD2 is a really disaster like all the others of HTC.
Still though, they show improvement from previous HTC outings, for which I'm grateful.
geo tagging
Hi guys, I can't find the settings to turn geo tagging on when taking pictures, is it not possible with this phone?
Im talking about embeding location data on the image exif, I use to have nokia phones in the past, n96, n82, n95..
footprints is neat but I don't see it adding gps information on to the photo,
example of this use is when you upload images to flickr the gps location shows up on flickr.
any info on this appriciated
I think if you check the tweaks thread there is a post about turning on Geotagging.
If its not there try searching, I know I've seen at post on this in the last couple of days.

hi their focus is weird as touch focus is on which activates (spot focus) so u will notice because that the middle of the pics are focused and the rest isnt as the pics where at such close distance to the object, i will try and show the other focus modes soon

Absolutely FALSE. Pictures taken with TouchHD are by far sharper and with much better definition for details. Just take a look at those shots:

Please increasing the sharpness in your camera-settings (or set it to maximun sharpness)
And then take some pictures in good light condition with a lot of detail (maybe like the picture with the trees)
I would apreciate a lot if you would do that for us.

Well, thats true for the moment and the given sample pics - i cannot belive that the TouchHD cam is bether.
I hope it is only a question of the sharpness setting!
This is a review I made for the Galaxy Camera after a week's use. It's stunning and completely incomparable to other high end compacts.
A few features that I love: the smart modes (especially rich tones, light trace and burst shot), the slow motion video recording and of course, the Android 4.1.1 which is perfect for such a device.

But, since you have played with the camera more than me, I have a question:
Is there a way to set manual focus? I wanted to record some equipment at work and as the equipment moves, the camera keeps refocusing. And it often focuses on part of the robot, not the part of the system I want to record. With other cameras you can set the focus and turn off auto focus.

You can always click on the screen on the part of the image you want focused or you can set it in expert mode and change the settings there manually (f, ISO, exposure, shutter speed etc)
I am recording videos, so I don't want to have to keep refocusing.
And the robot is moving while recording.

It would be great to see how it behaves in low-light and with/without using the flash. Samsung cameras are notorious to fail in their operations (focus, video etc) at Low Light levels.
To be fair I haven't taken any indoor low light photos, but you can see the exterior night shots in the shared Dropbox folder. I no longer have the camera, but I can ensure you the flash does a hell of a job and I can't see why you wouldn't use it.
Well... This guy is not very happy with the horrible cracking noise when zooming in/out, and another guy says he can't use the flash as a light while shooting video... So I don't know what to think about this $500+ "thing"...
My zooming was smooth and pretty silent, although you could notice it in the videos. You can't use the flash when filming because it's a discharge flash as opposed to LED flashes on mobile phones.
This is a really good review! I especially like the way you have incorporated the sample clips in the video with good examples also of the different settings.

Well... this is a photo camera which is also able to take video clips. If you want a video camera, get one.
If you want a touchscreen and Android on a point & shoot camera this is the one to buy. If you can live without them you can buy much cheaper cameras with the same picture quality.
Before buying the Galaxy Camera or even commenting on it you need to understand its purpose and specs / advantages.
It's NOT a DSLR. It doesn't aim to be a professional camera (although it gives you plenty of manual settings) and it certainly won't take pictures as good. It does offer the smart modes such as rich tones (for which you need filters on a DSLR), macro and light trace (which takes tweaking and setting on a DSLR as opposed to two clicks), 21x zoom without buying extra lenses etc.
It's NOT a regular compact camera. The price tag, build quality, specs and features stress that out pretty well.
The main purpose of the Galaxy Camera is the Android OS which means fast sharing, cloud integration, picture editting on the spot, not to mention all apps available for regular smartphones.
If you judge it on these terms and actually find out it's what you need, it's the perfect camera. Otherwise get a DSLR or a compact camera. Nobody will be upset

On your drop box photos, one of them shows the white, black and red versions, where is the red version available please for customers to buy. I don't mean demo versions.
Does a 64 GB card work in ex fat or does it need to be in fat32.
Is there a video editor and can it edit the videos shot on the camera itself. Can't seem to find an official case. On amazon uk there is a deal for this camera to get a discount on the short manfrotto tripod. Do you think that tripod would be fine for video as well as photos or would one need a different head for that tripod. Just looking for tips on that count.
On amazon different people say sgs2 or sgs3 battery works. Any idea which one actually works. Guessing its the sgs2.
Does it have USB OTG functions. If so does it need sgs2 or sgs3 USB OTG cable. I know you don't have the camera but since you seem to be a Samsung mobiler I am hoping you know about this.
My Samsung note can shoot videos longer than 30 mins. I read on other posts on XDA that this camera can't record more than 29mins 59secs. Is there a setting to increase this limit?
Did any of the Samsung remote apps work from your phone to control the camera like mobile link or remote view finder etc. Does the DSLR controller or any similar app work with this camera by wifi or USB.
I don't know about the red (I would say pink) version, in Romania none are available yet.
I don't exactly know about the filesystem type required for 64 GB microSDs, but I'm sure it's the same as the SIII, whatever that is.
There is Video Wizard, an app similar to Photo Wizard for editing videos shot on it, it's pretty cool and has more than the functionality you need on a camera, but I would rather use my PC for that so I didn't cover it... Maybe I will do an extra video specifically for that.
The tripod hole is standard, I used mine without any problems.
The battery has the same capacity with the S II, however I don't know if it's exactly the same. I will ask.
Yes, USB OTG is supported.
I never tried to shoot videos longer than a couple of minutes, but being a dedicated camera I'd be surprised if it had a time limit (besides the storage space).
The remote viewfinder option was available in the menu of the camera app, but after an update to the latest firmware it's gone. I haven't tested any remote shooting modes besides voice commands (which works like a charm, but you need silence and you can't see what you're shooting). If there are dedicated remotes for Android (not necessarily made by Samsung), then they should work on the Galaxy Camera without issues.
Thanks. On the engadget post about covers for this they show covers in white black red pink and orange. So i assume those are the proposed colors to be released. But can only find white and black online for now.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Nokia 9 PureView come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

I've been using the light L16 for a long while. I assume it would work the same. Images on the Pure View may render a bit slow "on device" , since it dosent have to be exported into lights Lumen software. I'll see once mines arrives though.

Yes, with all the sensor data on it does take a while to merge all the image data. The amount of time varies based on the scene and detail.

It's instant surprisingly, their software team has done a excellent job on that part. Even though it uses the SD820 and their custom ASIC together, everything works just fine. I'm sure with the SD845 and the ASIC chip, things would work much better on that device.

I meant it takes a while on the Nokia 9 Pureview. I've had everywhere from about 4 seconds, up to 25ish seconds to process a photo.
As I'm eager to get my hands on this device mainly for the capabilities of the camera, is it possible for some of the lucky early owners to share a few RAW files.
At least two people here have it, and we don't have one real-life sample to check out.
I really can't believe there are no real and meaningful reviews for this phone...

Guys, can you please post more dng samples? outdoors for base iso, indoors for high iso? When I developed the dngs posted here, they are all quite great actually, even at iso 1600. That's the flowers shot. The same flower shot in jpg is quite oversharpened and noisy, with ugly artefacts, dark shadows and blown out highlights that are not present in the jpg. The subway shot is iso 1400, basically noise free. The doughnut shot is iso 208 and man, it is absolutely amazing in terms of both detail and noise. I think the bad quality you see in jpgs is simply bad processing by the nokia camera app. I think that this hardware is capable of great photos. Wondering if SNAP camera HDR app would work on this. Thanks!

I think the shadow recovery is amazing, almost no noise increase, and this on a phone.
1st photo supplied by @phunkyp , increased the brightness of the dark background in a raw editor.
But i think the general sharpness isn't the best compared with well lit single sensor photos, what do you think? For example in the samples of @stefanve those details in the trees just look strange somehow. But there is definatly a lot to play with in the editor (2nd photo by him). Yes its a bit much.
Here are a couple of extra test shots. 3 files per scene. DNG, JPG from the default camera app and one from the LR camera. The LR shot should be using only one of the 5 camera's so we can see the difference between one vs 5 camera's

Personally I don't think that the camera has on point focus (maybe that is why they use very aggressive sharpening in de jpegs) but overall I think it is really good for a phone, lots of detail and light. This is one of the view phones (that I used) that gives me usable photo's the other one being the Lumia 950 XL and the Mate 9 (but only in b&w)
Is Lightroom not capable to get raw from the Nokia cam? That would be interesting to compare, Lightroom single Cam dng vs Lightroom HDR dng vs Nokia 5 cam dng.
No sadly , it is not possible to save the raw data with de LR camera app.

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the Huawei P40 Pro performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.

Pics quality is satisfactory, really nice. On the other hand video in lowlight condition (or maybe indoor recordings, bulb) is horrible. It's like there's no focus at all, very very blurry videos. It's strange cos pics are still decent.
Selfie quality is quite nice, no comparison with the grotty selfies taken with the P20 Pro - except the subject my selfies usually show.
There's one feature lacking - a less extreme bokeh effect with pictures taken in portrait mode.

Oh, nothing to see, I am too much of a freshman for XDA allowing me to use external links to pictures.
Just try for yourself: Switch to Portrait mode, front camera, select a bookeh effect (touch the effects button and choose whatever you like), take a picture with some background far away.
You'll notice you'll look like pasted into the picture, not natural, not really like part of the picture.
That's because each and every bokeh effect is overdone if using the effects, but not sufficient without.
Thus something intermediate would be a great addition, or even better: Some means for setting the effect's strength.

Just try for yourself: Switch to Portrait mode, front camera, select a bookeh effect (touch the effects button and choose whatever you like), take a picture with some background far away.
You'll notice you'll look like pasted into the picture, not natural, not really like part of the picture.

I totally understand what you are saying. My P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro used software to do the bokeh effect on the front cameras. Very similar results as the early P9 and P10 main cameras. Not very natural looking but has improved on the main camera over the years. My P40 Pro has not arrived yet but i am hopeful the dual front camera will improve this effect and make it more natural looking. I Still have my previous models so can compare and share the results once my new device has arrived.
Are you able to share any photos as examples?

I skipped the P30, use P20 Pro and P40 Pro, so I don't know the selfie camera skills of the P30 series.
The difference between P20 Pro and P40 Pro is EXTREME, with the P40 Pro's selfies being that much better.
But as said - bokeh is overdone.

Thank you for the examples. You are right, there is a massive difference. These look like great quality for a front camera. If this was three years ago i would expect those pictures to have been from the main camera but understand what you mean, bokeh is over done. What i found from my P30 Pro is that because it is software and not hardware on the front camera it picks the objects behind the individual to create layers. I found that when the background had multiple items in the background that were different distances away from the camera it had a more natural effect. As your examples show it looks like Huawei are still using software to create the bokeh effect, even with having the dual camera on the front. I would have expected to be able to control the dual camera bokeh similar to the P9 standard.
I will do some digging on the Huawei community UK page to see if this is the case. We are seeing that updates will be coming but it would be interesting to find out if they will be updating the front camera also to rectify this issue.

I forgot to mention an important detail: The sample pictures were taken with an additional bokeh feature switched on. That's what's causing the overdone effect. There are several effects to choose from; and I chose the LEAST strong effect.
Pictures taken without those feature show a typical f/2.2 bokeh, very clean and nice - but in many cases not sufficient for a face really standing out.
That's why I wished there was something in between.
And as you already noticed: The frontcam picture are of a maincam quality, there's really NO comparison to the real weak front camera of my trusty P20 Pro.
It's cloudy at present and work is still overwhelming - maybe I can do some frontcam shots tomorrow for you to have a closer look at some more pleasing subjects.
