Verizon non-vzw device - Nexus 6 General

Don't know how it will affect insurance but when I log on to vzw and check my device type it now says non-vzw device.

DId you go to a Verizon store and activate the Nexus 6 with your SIM? Or did you just stick your old one in? Because if you didn't buy it from Google Play or Verizon, then chances are, Verizon won't let you activate it officially. You can read more about it here.

I don't think your verizon insurance policy would cover anything purchase from a 3rd party. The policy is on a specific phone.

No, its a feature added to a line, or so I have been told by Verizon. The insurance is from a third party anyway.

This is normal, nothing to worry about. It's because the N6 isn't in their online catalog yet.

To confirm. If I'm not a Verizon customer and I somehow managed to purchase the Nexus 6 on Google Play Store Or Motorola, how do I go about getting it activated? Just walk into a Verizon store and pick my plan?

Verizon won't activate it since it's not in their system. You need to have a Verizon sim already activated in order to get service on the Nexus 6. Even then the phone will still appear as a non-vzw device. Post 2 in this thread links to an AP article where they have a workaround for people who aren't current customers.

Thanks! But theoretically when Verizon starts offering the phone and has it in their system, do you think I'll be able to activate it?

I bought my nexus 6 from tmobile and I am on verizon. Will I be able to get insurance on my phone and do I have still have a manufacturer warranty?

Anyone here have a device on hand connected to Verizon? I have one and my voice mail notifications seem to be coming in as weird texts. I get no icon on top showing that I have a voice mail waiting.

I have a Nexus 6 on verizon which i just got today. Have yet to recieve a voicemail yet but will check it out.

Do you have Verizon visual voicemail? You will get these messages because I don't believe that app is supported on aosp. You need to change to basic Voicemail (can do it online through your account) or use third party Voicemail.

He has to deactivate the ESN of the phone from his account then you can put your number onto the phone.

Yes it can all be done at the store! You're making a good choice on the device
don't pay the seller until the device is confirmed working on your account.
That way he can't snatch-n-run :O
I would also like to add it's best to go with the seller of the phone to the Sprint store and have him deactivate the ESN on his account and then you reactivate it on your account at the same time. That way you know it's legit and you're not going to get ripped off by buying a phone that has been flagged. Once it's confirmed it's on your account, then you pay the seller at the store.
Plus at least the Sprint store is also a public place as well so chance of you getting robbed or cheated by someone unscrupulous from Craigslist is a lot lower.

Unable to Activate Motorola Purchased Device on Sprint

Hey,
I think we all knew this was possible, but I am confirming that my Nexus 6 that was purchased directly from Motorola is not white listed for activation on Sprint.
I am trying to work with Sprint for a solution, and I will update if I find anything new.
FYI, the device is a Cloud White 32gb.

Yeah, we already know that sprint white listed the phones and only activates one from GPS and their, but seeing that motorola its a manufacturer and not a carrier they should let you activate it. Keep us informed, hopefully they let you.
I received my 64GB blue version this morning from Moto. Ran into the same thing, even took it to a Sprint Corporate store. They told me I have to call motorola, I'm on the phone with Moto now.
Wow, how awful!
According to my dealing with customer service, Google Play devices and those purchased directly through Sprint are the only ones that will be eligible for activation.
I really try to stick up for Sprint most of the time.... but this is just brain dead stupid.
are you guys serious?? wow that means Verizon is going to give hell to activate these nexus 6. im on verizon.. still trying to order a 64gb from Moto.
Ok, so I have someone at Moto that is going to be reaching out to Sprint, he'll call me when he gets any updates.

Crap. This BS needs to stop. I'm wondering how on Earth it can even be legal.
I remember last year it took a while for sprint to add the GPS 32gb nexus 5 IMEIs to their system. This might be a similar issue

If Motorola doesn't get Sprint to about face on this fast, I'm demanding that they cancel my order whether they claim to be able to or not.
Claiming their phone can be purchased through them and activated anywhere only for it not to be is false advertising.
Yeah it is very frustrating. But I did finally speak to someone at Moto that understood so I'm hopeful it'll get straightened out. Though it sucks that it really in Sprint's hands to get resolved and I hope they don't take very long.

Yes. This is hopefully the same issue. If this was a big restriction then I'm not sure why they were willing to send all of us SIM cards for the device.

Are you trying to activate the phone with new service on Sprint or are you just not getting your current SIM to work?
With the Nexus 7 LTE, this happened last year at Verizon if you tried to add a new line. They didn't have the IMEIs in their system. But if you just slapped in a Verizon SIM, it worked just fine.

I have not, though I will do so shortly.
So it sounds like the same problem we saw last year at Verizon. Sprint doesn't have the IMEIs yet. I bet if you chopped down your micro to a nano SIM size, stuck it in, it would work.
there is a VZW customer that recieved his order from Moto today and it worked... so VZW customers are okay it seems.

I got a Nexus 6 straight from Sprint, and I'm using my Verizon sim. The Verizon sim actually works better. I only have data with my sprint sim I can't send or receive texts or make or receive calls. I get a message cannot validate you account when trying to make a call. Everything works flawlessly with my Verizon sim.

Not to sound like an advertisement but I got my att model from bestbuy sim locked and used Cellunlocker to unlock it.
as of this moment, onlty att locks the sim. people are speculating if verizon will also do this, but its only att at the moment.
Another nod for Sprint being unlocked. I just put my N6 that I got 2 days after it hit the Sprint shelf on Tmobile and it rings for incoming calls again. Sprint has network issues and I got tired of missing calls and having cust service always start out with "factory reset your phone." My note 3 had the same issue on Sprint. 15 mins for Tmob to setup the account and put the sim in. 0$ and a better plan price to boot.

my experience with Verizon's version of the Galaxy Nexus left a bad taste in my mouth. I will be very very hard pressed to ever buy a verizon branded phone ever again. they do get my money though. That I don't mind paying for because I have signal everywhere I go and the legacy unlimited data plan.
The carrier locks aren't really a big deal in any case. $20 and you can get it unlocked at any number of cell unlocking sites.
Would rather it not be locked at all, but isn't that big of a deal....

As of today, if you are not under contract with the carrier that the phone is locked to, or owe them money due to an EIP, they have to unlock the phone.

AT&T are the only ones that are carrier locked, unless it was purchased outright or paid off, I would really double check with whoever you're buying it from and have them meet you at a sprint store to actually check everything out before you commit

FCC and Verizon

Sent off a complaint to the FCC in regard to non-vzw nexus 6 on the vzw network. Basically, I said that the CFR states that they cant prevent us from using services the way there were intended to be just becaue we are using a non-vzw device. I spoke with someone at the FCC and they said I should file the complaint becuase not allowing customers to change their account details violates the C-block CFR.
Lets see where this goes.....
It is seeming more and more that Verizon doesn't want customers. I am about to leave them but I have unlimited grandfather data so I can't.

Google and Motorola Should Be Held Accountable
Read the following article for background:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...te-one-that-wasnt-purchased-from-the-carrier/
Google and Motorola should team up and take Verizon to court over this issue. Probably won't happen, they all share the same bed.
Google and Motorola should at the very least post a warning for Nexus 6 buyers about the problems with Verizon service and non-branded Verizon devices.
My feeling is that the financial folks at Verizon are making these type of poor decisions. Verizon is just too big to be held accountable for their behavior.
Rant off ....
What's the issue? Motorola phones work on and off Vzw network, and plan changes have nothing to do with your phone. Been with VZW for 10 yrs and never had issues. I have a Mot bought Nexus 6 and works beautifully. What issues are people seeing?

If your devices is basically "unknown" they freeze the settings. For example my play store GPS they would not add volte to my account. Had to put my sim in a verizon nexus 6 for 5 minutes for them to make the change.

I'm wondering the same having only used GSM phones. So far I'm using my AT&T SIM but believe Verizon has better coverage in my area (western CT).
On their site I started here (scroll down) with the 'I'm not with Verizon' button, then chose 'I have my own device' on the popup and got to a page I can't directly link that asks for my device ID/IMEI, and then tells me "The phone associated with the Device ID you entered is not compatible with the Verizon Wireless network."
I would like the 3 GB $45/mo plan and am assuming that's with no contract and should be available for the Moto XPE, right? I can go to a store but I'd like to know the facts first to avoid getting derailed by unknowledgeable/uncooperative staff, though I'd prefer doing it online if I can get past the phone ID barrier. Maybe they'll update their approved phones soon but I'd like to shift over before the 20th when my current month ends with AT&T. Should I try calling them and has anyone done that successfully?

I called the number on the website and got a sales associate who also took my IMEI and said it's not currently 'registered' (the word he used) on Verizon, so I can't get a new account using it. He couldn't/wouldn't give any clear idea on if/when it will be but did say the new plans are no-contract now. My guess is a store will tell us the same thing, so won't bother unless we hear of success stories from others and how they did it.

Or simply buy a regular sim card for htc m9 on ebay or wherever and then chat with them or call and ask them to activate without device, tell them you are using non-vzw device which works just fine on Verizon,or some people had success at corporate stores with managers activating,or if you have a good premium retailer try that as well.
Need an imei of a device that takes a nano sim that is allowed on VZW network. I wasn't making a new account but I needed the nano sim. Wife's device (galaxy s6)is on the account and had the VZW rep use her device imei to issue me a simcard. Works perfect.

This is why I think using a prepaid Sim might work, because since is under Verizon's BYOD, Bring Your Own Device, that they will allow it to be activated. I am then wondering if I then ask for a normal contract if it would be simpler.

I am now thinking if the device is purchased directly for Motorola then it will active on Verizon but if it is bought else where then it is an issue.

There's only 3 places to buy from: Motorola, Amazon and Best Buy. If you're buying from Best Buy, they can activate it for you. I believe with Amazon, you would have to go to your carrier just like if you bought from Motorola.
