I booted into recovery using TWRP and my device went straight into download mode and I could not get out. I have a unlocked at&t SGH i337 originally with the old bootloader or MDL.
Tried installing the tar file with Odin and it failed. The only tar file I can get to work is NB1 4.4.2. I can't install a custom recovery now cause every time I boot to recovery the whole process starts over.
My device is rooted and shows custom in the bootloader so I'm sure I'm unlocked but even so I went through the unlock procedures just to be sure.
Does this mean I need to use SafeStrap now???
Thanks for your help

Yep. If you ODIN'd the NB1 tar, welcome to the club... your bootloader is now locked and safestrap is the only recovery you can use.
Just to verify, double check your bootloader...

Hello all i have a galaxy s4 atat and i need help flashing twrp . It use to be sooo much easier. But now when i download gooim it wont install the custom open recovery script.
I tried to flash my gs4 with odin using the stock firmware i found here at this thread and it says fail AUTH. i used this thread for the stock firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573
when i put my phone into download mode nothing is wrong. then i insert the md5 file into the PDA slot try and flash and odin says fail auth
.
so im stuck. and i am trying to flash my phone back to stock because i want to install twrp over gooim since on my current crappy stock rom wont let me do it. please help
What firmware are you? If MF3, stop! MF3 only has root. If MDL, there are guides

mf3 yes. so basically we havent cracked mf3? nor can i downgrade...
wait a second this whole root recovery situation is sooo hypocritical
..
so we can get root on mf3 and twrp says if you have root you can install a custom recovery. but now your saying i cant...
the whole point of getting root is to be able to install a custom recovery using gooim.....
ummmm'
.....
Root access does lead to custom recoveries but on unlocked bootloaders. Ours is locked tight by AT&T therefore no custom recoveries yet. Developers are working hard on getting there. With root you do have root access, so you can freeze bloatware and still do root access stuff but be careful if you mess up, at this moment there is no way going back on kies or Odin.

The boot loader is locked on the s4. If you have mf3 firmware you can root it but there's no way to put on a custom recovery. Do some more reading and research before you brick your device
okay.. sounds good. any idea or threads that have updates... with the progress.

What if you rooted MF3 and can access stock recovery. Is there any consequences if you try and do a factory reset?

Need more info to be able to help you, like what firmware are you on? mf3 or mk2? Once you figure that out the just Odin back to stock with the tar files posted here on XDA. Boot loaders are locked on both mf3 & mk2 so no CWM, no TWRP. Safestrap is the only recovery that works. I suggest Odin back to stock & start fresh.
i really dont know what firmware i am on...
which files should i flash??

Lol depends what firmware your on.
If you were on mf3 or mk2 with locked boot loader than that's why your stuck.
download amdl and mk2.. Bc the bootloader isn't all locked up its worth a try. If amdl fails in Odin then try mk2 and you should be good. But your boot loader will be locked tighter than a nun from a convent.
You really should have read around or asked questions before trying anything. Could have been avoided

Okay that is the leaked version of Kit Kat 4.4.2. So you need to Odin back to stock with the above tar files for mk2. You can then use this guide & either root, install Safestrap recovery & then a custom rom of your choice listed in the guide or you can take the official OTA 4.4.2 Kit Kat update. Good luck.

I installed the KOT49H GE ROM on my AT&T SGH-I337 and it runs great. I then decided to see if there was an update to TWRP and I found an updated one and flashed it via goo.im. I later read that this is not the way to do it. Anyway, when I boot into recovery a big yella triangle appears and at&t scolds me for running in authorized firmware. I can boot into download, cancel it and the ROM boots and runs fine.
Under the "about device" page on settings it says the baseband is MK2 (because I flashed that modem). If I look at the boot loader version via android terminal emulator it shows I'm still on MDL.
Any ideas how to get recovery working again?
I am trying to understand the reason why you flashed a recovery.
From your post, it looks like you are using safestrap and deadly venom tool to run GE.
You can flash the MLD files from the tool to get the recovery back.

I found an updated version of TWRP and thought it would be a good idea to update it. I think the problem might be that I didn't use Loki doki before I installed the twrp update. It can't get to the recovery now. Will I mess anything up if I use motochopper? I don't want safestrap because I like the Google Edition ROM and I'm still on the MDL boot loader.
I'm pretty much a newb with this S4. I had my S2 rooted with task650's ROM and understood that better because no locked bootloader

My bad! I read that you had "MLD" bootloader instead of "MDL" and hence my comment. MLD is a leaked 4.4 firmware.
Motochopper is used to root and I am guessing you still have root. All you need to do is flash a recovery.

Thanks for helping me out. I tried this yesterday and today with the link you provided. When I try to flash it via odin, it comes up as failed. On my phone, it says "SECURE CHECK FAIL: recovery" in red letters on the download page. Any other ideas?
You could try grabbing the mdl package, an extracting the recovery from it and flash in Odin or Heimdall. Worst case you flash to mdl and then motochopper it again.

Thanks. Do i need root to do this? I don't think I even have root any more. I'm running a custom ROM without root access. I tried to use CASUAL to root and install the recovery but it couldn't root it.
You will only need to root again if you go all the way back to stock.

I am on MK2 4.3 and I have Safestrap installed and I installed the recovery and when I reboot into recovery It goes to the Custom screen then it fails to Go to the Splash screen where I can choose to go into TWRP . I had this working on MF3 but I had bricked my phone and and had to flash the allin one to fix it . I am successfully rooted with safestrap installed .. ANY IDEAS would be greatly appreciated...Thanks By the way it Says Safe system : Not Active. I thought I remember it saying Active before
Also is there another way to install a Recovery. Im coming from a Tmobile GS2 where you could flash recovery once within Odin and after that you could just flash different versions of Twrp or Cwm when needed. No locked boot loader . I always thought HTC was the only phones with locked boot loaders . I have been doing a lot of reading prior to posting this question and have been up all night . After bricking last night and recovering from it I got a crash course with this device.

Check your root condition is valid. If you do not have root you can not install the safestrap recovery.
To go to the safestrap you do not need to reboot into the recovery. You simply reboot as normal and safestrap splash screen would come up.
You can use odin to flash the recovery in the download mode or you can use adb command to push the recovery.
AT&T and verizon G4 bootloaders are locked. You can not unlock like HTC S-off. You can only exploit the bootloader with different methods based on your firmware version.
Simply reboot the phone and on boot up it will show you the splash screen. Not active means that stock slot is still selected.

You can use Odin to flash twrp and root with an unlocked bootloader.
Twrp: https://dl.twrp.me/jflteatt/
Flash SuperSU from twrp: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/stable-2016-09-01supersu-v2-78-release-t3452703

i just used the CASUAL app i linked earlier.. it worked to get root and installed twrp..
now i'm looking for a decent rom to install.. all the ones i used to use aren't supported any longer..
I hear Thor ROM and Golden eye ROM are nice and fast TW roms. For non touch wiz there is probably an CM or AOSP rom out there somewhere.
