Just wanted to let anyone know that if you have a USB keyboard plugged in, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D to bring up the debug info which shows the buffering and playing bitrate, and your last measured download speed along with a plethora of other info (while playing a Netflix video).
very cool

thanks i love detailed info ,
Thanks!
Since Netflix on the Fire TV doesn't support other countries than the US (even with unblock us), this might give me more info regarding why, will have to borrow a USB keyboard now.
adb logcat only gave me cert-errors while trying to play UK netflix or alike, looks like Amazon locked it down a bit more

I got netflix working with "unlocator". I live in the EU and had to set the DNS in my router. That made it work. I downloaded latest netflix from the store and sideloaded that app, but it's made for touch controls. Atleast the old netflix is working.

What exactly works w/ unlocator? US netflix works for me as well using unblock us, problem is in the local UK/NL versions, they don't work with the stock Netflix app. The side loaded version indeed does work, see my post in the Q&A section. ( to get around touch controls limitations, first start on your phone/tablet, then on the sideloaded netflix)
Still kinda stuck on local (NL/UK) Netflix w/ stock app, or are you saying this works with unlocator ?
Living in Brazil and I'm using Netflix without any modifications at all. Just had to move my amazon app account to US so I could download the Netflix app.

Yeah, Fire TV Netflix supports all Americas countries (US,CA,BR,AR,CO etc), but no European ones, even with unblock us and alike. Gives Java certificate chain errors. Too bad for now.
European Netflix supported after latest firmware update...
Amazon just posted the source code to software version 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 on the US Source Code Notice page. So far this update has been limited to UK Fire TVs, but based on the timeline of the German updates, we should all start to see this update roll out soon. The last two updates both began arriving on US Fire TVs 3 days after the source code was posted.
Be warned that there is an older update prior to this one, numbered 51.1.40_user_514005520, that is reportedly causes XBMC/Kodi to instantly crash on launch. I'm guessing most, if not all, will skip it and update directly to the newer version.
Reason number 1 to root and block updates.
Download URL for software version 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 is http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuit...ueller-ota-51.1.4.0_user_514006420-signed.bin
Interestingly, the file path is slightly different from previous updates.
amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net/obfuscated-otav3/... (this update)
amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net/obfuscated/... (all previous updates)
Thankfully the domain has stayed the same.
Like the previous update, the Fire TV I don't want to lose root on is the one that received the update. So I'll post my overview of the changes this update brings when either my "sacrificial" Fire TV gets the update or rbox gets time to pre-root this one.
Psst, @rbox
My FireTV updated last night to this firmware (I am in the Netherlands). XBMC/Kodi still works.

So I just updated my Fire TV and uploaded it to my prerooted thread. It looks pretty much the same although my Menu Items xposed module stopped working. It looks like they added the English (UK) language to the selection list. FreeTime still shows up even when switching the language, so not sure how the German/UK boxes know to hide it. Netflix told me I had to update. I hadn't seen anyone mention a new Netflix version and I don't know if people on the old firmware can update to it. The old one is here and the new one is here. It looks like it's a completely different package name, but somehow the Fire TV knows to remove the old one in the process. Some Amazon magic probably, because stock Android doesn't do that. I think this is the "new" layout people have been waiting for. It also seems like it's possibly a native android app vs the old one which seemed to be an html5 app. I am having issues with actually using the Netflix app though. At first it wouldn't log in, then it finally did and it doesn't seem to want to play anything. It might have to do with the fact that the tz partition was updated and it requires that update. I hope not because updating tz can cause an instabrick. I may have to look into this later if Netflix doesnt start working tomorrow.
same issue here. I hope, there is a solution for this as i want the new netflix ui
I tried too. I was forced to upgrade the Netflix app which then prompted me to re-enter my login credentials. I had no problem with that, but nothing will play. I restarted the app multiple times. It always connects to the service, but cant play anything. The circular indicator comes up and spins a bit, gets to 3% and then fails with a message saying that the video cannot be played right now.
Unless Voice search is part of this NetFlix update or not sure if it was already functioning ?? Isn't it better to just sideload NetFlix from the PlayStore since it's the one that gets the most/quickest updates anyway ?? And get rid of this one ?

If I update to this with a prerooted image, will I get root, if I don't currently have root?

I just had a look over on the amazon forums and found this below. Is someone able to try this to see if it fixes Netflix please? If I upgrade & break Netflix I'll be in a lot of trouble with the family
From Amazon customer discussions...
"I found this tip somewhere, and it finally worked. Apparently the Amazon Video app has problems clearing cache or some such.
Go into your settings--> Apps---> Amazon Video. Click the clear cache, and then the delete data. Let it sit for about 30 seconds. Back out and view it to make sure they both show 0.0 MB. Then just turn off (unplug) the FireTV for about 30 seconds. When you come back in, Netflix, Hulu and anything else that has been having trouble connecting will work again. IIts clearly a bug in the Prime Video software "

I tried that earlier. I cleared data and cache from the Netflix app but it didn't help. (Though I still had no problem connecting again after entering my credentials for the second time.)
I have a possible fix for Netflix. I'm not very confident about it and there is a very good chance it could brick the Fire TV. If anyone wants to try it, knowing that it could very well brick it, PM me.

i cant get the new netflix to install on the older firmware, not backwards compatible for me at least.. which is weird since US users aren't forced to update yet afaik so it should work, amazon store says it sent it to my fire tv but it was still the old app. so i added it to the amazon cloud, which got it showing up on the TV, when i goto download it i get "install failed". Are any US users using the new netflix app with an older firmware and updates blocked?
can we swap boot and recovery and still get to fire OS via reboot recovery? might make it safer to test.

The new netflix app seems to require a newer version of the Amazon SDK. After playing around with some things I noticed it's expecting a new type of drm library that if it doesn't exist it will fail to run. And that library didn't exist before 51.1.4.0.
As for testing my fix, it's something that would prevent the main bootloader from working if it were to brick it. If only someone was able to figure out how to write the mmc, it'd be very risk free to test...
Software Updates — Fire TV v51.1.4.2_user_514015320 & Stick v54.1.0.2_user_102018720
Amazon just posted the source code to Fire TV software version 51.1.4.2_user_514015320 on the US Source Code page. Expect this update to start rolling out to devices in the next day or two. The main reason for this update is likely to bring HBO integration into the FIre TV's search results.
UPDATE: They're also posted the source code to Fire TV Stick software update version 54.1.0.2_user_102018720
Great news! a lot of people wanted HBO go support, hopefully we will see some other fixes also. Though I seem to be alone in my netflix problems ever since new version came out, I hope it got an update haha
Any reason to think this update my have any insidious things for XBMC users? I definitely don't want to lose the side-loaded SPMC from my home screen.

Hopefully there will be some reports if it works on the FireTV Sticks.
I just updated the original post. The Fire TV Stick is also getting an update.
Note: I did move the location of SuperSU & then changed programs back and forth. So @rbox has solve the mystery of the update message. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57533803&postcount=9 Tin foil hats off...
Not sure if it's related to the HBO app & I don't want to be an alarmist. But I was messing with SuperSU. And restarted the FireTV. & one of the first reboots after the colorful Amazon logo I saw a message say FireTV updating. It was very short & then it went way and booted. Doubt it was related with my SuperSU messing. But maybe Amazon's update is making the rounds. And if you instal the HBO app it might move you to the top of the list. Wonder if the FireTV blocked it or if the HBO app comes with a tiny update inside. No Idea.. Just be on the look out for it. My FW says it is the same as before & so does my remotes.
I am still rooted & I also redid the OTA update block.. The installing update message looked like normal FireTV trying to update message. Grey/Black background & white letters & update bar. But the bar never moved.
Unless the HBO streaming service turns out to be dirt cheap (doubtful), I couldn't care less about HBO Go. What I do care about is 1) support for external drives without requiring root and 2) an easy official way to add side-loaded apps to the home screen. Number 2 isn't even that important to me. I'm ready to make the jump to Android TV if someone comes out with a box that's better than the Nexus Player and supports a micro SD card or external USB storage. Of course if by some miracle Amazon releases a new firmware that supports external USB storage then I may stick with FireTV.

If you mess with /system apps, it triggers that message. It's dalvik doing it's caching.
If the source was released... What is the possibility to find a root? Or perhaps tricking the FireTV to update to a prerooted firmware?

The source has always been released by Amazon since day one. They are forced to release the source because they are using open source software whose license requires that the source be released. The source doesn't really help speed up rooting.
Tricking won't work because the update files are signed so can't be modified, otherwise the Fire Tv will reject them. you also can't trick the Fire TV into installing an older software version because it checks that the software version it's installing is the software version it was told to download by Amazon.

Did you block the update IP's... Either to wok on a FireTV or following a guide. Then if they are still blocked then you will not be able to update...
Can't you just download the HBO Go app from the Amazon app store? That's what I did.
BTW, does anyone know how to turn off the UI sounds in the app?
The source code for the next software updates for the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick have been posted to Amazon's US source code page. I've already seen word of people receiving these updates, so they've begun rolling out.

Hmm. I wonder if this is the cause of the new problem I've encountered. I have got two AFTV's both of which can't get any Amazon content since this weekend. I get the "Unable to contact our servers" error for the Home, TV, and Movies sections. They both can still get apps and they will download apps that aren't on the boxes. Netflix works fine. And of course Kodi works fine.
If they were supposed to get this update, and Amazon knows they are not updated, could this be the cause of this problem for me? I am in the US so I am not using any VPN to circumvent any geo content restrictions. I'm not even blocking DNS. I wonder if this wouldn't be a problem if I were blocking DNS.

It's unlikely that your issue is related to this update. If Amazon were truly going to require this update in order to view content, then they wouldn't have flipped the switch yet. The vast majority of Fire TVs have not received this update yet.

I'm not at home, but my wife is reporting that the Fire TV Stick (unrooted) won't work because of internet problems. The Internet is fine. I still was blocking the update servers through OpenDNS. I removed the block and I'm waiting for openDNS to allow the connections. I think Amazon is forcing the update on the stick. My other two rooted Fire TVs are off, so I'll have to test when I get home. I disabled the update service on those.

It's unlikely that your issue is related to this update. If Amazon were truly going to require this update in order to view content, then they wouldn't have flipped the switch yet. The vast majority of Fire TVs have not received this update yet.

I get the same problem about twice per week. Unplugging and plugging back in solves the problem I don't know if it is the AFTV or XBMC use causing it.

Thanks. It was unrelated. It seems to have resolved itself without any reboot sometime between my post and this weekend when I went to look at it again. My AFTV's are always running Kodi so I really have no idea how frequently this might occur. I'll keep an eye on it and see if this happens regularly.
also, you dont have to power cycle to reboot. hold the play/pause and select button for a few seconds to reboot.

Never knew that. Nice tip!
I've received both updates now (Fire TV & Fire TV Stick) and had a chance to compare them to the previous version. I haven't been able to find any visible changes. Also, Amazon has updated their software pages and officially listed these updates as "Bug Fixes".
Accessibility Permissions Manager
Hi Everyone,
I would like to share with you my app which you will only need if you want to use apps which needs Accessibility Permissions to work.
This app reduces the hassle to enter the commands to set those apps up and is created to be used on FireTV Devices.
Instructions:
Enable ADB Debugging on your FireTV.
Open Accessibility Manager.
If you are on FireOS 6 or 7 then you will see a prompt to Allow ADB Debugging, Click ALLOW
if app shows Connection Failed Disable then Re-enable ADB Debugging.
Sometimes reboot is required, and if you are still getting Connection Failed, there will be System Update ready to install
Install that update and reopen Accessibility Manager.
If everything goes fine, you will reach the Main Screen where you can Allow and Deny other Apps.
After that you can Disable ADB Debugging to be on safe side, you will not be needing that anymore.
If you are on FireOS 5, follow the on screen Instructions,
you will need a PC with ADB on it, or you can use Remote ADB Shell on other Smartphone.
after following the Instruction reopen Accessibility Manager and you are good to go.
NOTE: APP WORKS ON OLDER VERSION OF FIREOS ONLY.

fireos 6.2.7.2
Fire Tv Setting - accessibility service is still OFF in Fire TV Settings after installing
Accessibility Manager_1.6.apk
On/Off Sleep mode auto starts Wolf Launcher, but hard-reset brings original amazon home screen. & pressing home button on remote still brings me to OG home screen (amazon) launcher.
Please anyone tell LaunchX method in OP is still working as of 16 Aug or not..
Because after doing everything for me it's not working.. Amazon launcher keep coming back after pressing home button on remote!!

Seems like the latest Amazon Update broke it again. we have to wait for the developers
Yes, mine also FTV4k did an update last night going from 6.2.7.1 to 6.2.7.3
Now Accessibility Services: Stopped.
Home screen button back to default UI
Yup same here, just got the same update last night. So Accessibility workaround to enable a custom bootable application [like launchers] stopped working.
Hopefully @SweenWolf can work some magic and get us another workaround.
No longer working on fire TV is 6.2.7.3 any idea Wolf?
I used to use an app that enables another apps accessibility just by opening it. But I can't seem to get it to work for techdoctoruk's firetv settings.
https://github.com/oathzed/BMsettings/blob/master/bmsettings (1).rar
Even though I put this in the main activity :
const-string v3, "enabled_accessibility_services"
const-string v4, "com.wolf.firetvsettings/com.wolf.firetvsettings.HomeService
Is that not where accessibility service is located?

Amazon hasn't released 6.2.7.3 from what I can tell. My Fire TV is currently on 6.2.7.1 according from the Check For Updates page. Has Amazon recently pushed out 6.2.7.3 yet?

I am on 6.2.7.3. might be a slow regional roll out.

I know many have received the update and it broke the apps, but I too am waiting for the update, without looking it myself i cannot say anything.
Amazon pushed out 6.2.7.3 on August 17th for the FireStick4k. It's a slow rollout though. I have it in Canada.
Same here, in Canada. I have 5 Firestick 4K. Two of them have updated to 6.2.7.3 (and broke the Home button of the Wolf launcher) and the other 3 are still on 6.2.7.1 and when I click to check for updates on those 3, it says that they are up to date. So I'm not sure it's a regional thing as opposed to maybe which have been registered first or some other order of operation... I ended up rooting the two at 6.2.7.3 and was able to figure out how to make work in a "round about way". Dang, hopefully soon you'll be able to debug, or if you need me to help debug anything Im hear.
Any hope on a fix Sween? Looks like accessibility doesn't fully seem to be the issue. I cant get my button mappers to find any key codes.

you do know that Accessibility service is the services which gives back the "key codes".
And yeah, I cannot bind my service to the system, the only problem, there isn't any other problem.
In short Accessibility Service is doomed for FireOS. Unless it isn't because VoiceView still works.
I had no time to fully understand the issue, i was held up, i will look into it tomorrow, Night.

I have accessibility enabled on the button mapper though. I'm not getting thrown any error saying i need to enable accessibility. On my other keymapper it also says accessibility "enabled".
Well that sucks. hopefully you can figure something out tomorrow. cheers man.

It doesn't matter what the keymapper is saying, the Methods aren't returning.
