[Q] Wear on a phone - Wear OS Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it feasible to build an Android Wear ROM for a phone? Not to be used as a phone, but more of a desktop clock with all the functionality of Wear.
This may sound like an odd thing to want, but I think it would be a nicety.

Set up a build environment and downloaded the source last night. I'll be attempting to find out. I'll report back as I go.

That is a great freaking idea, I would have never thought to do that with a spare phone. We all have one right? I have an HTC one m7 that this would be a great use for. I was just going to turn it into a remote.

I can't see this as being stable if it's possible. Even Android Studio sets up wear app XML at 320x320. Everything would be incredibly blurry and out of proportion. Only a select amount of faces would look decent, and even then, you may have issues with Bluetooth pairing.

I expected some visual issues. But, why would Bluetooth connectivity be a problem?

The intent wouldn't be for it to use cellular or WiFi. It would connect to your actual phone via Bluetooth like a watch.

Modify the xmls enough and you can do this. Android Wear is android, remember that, it does support data, wifi and bt out of the box. Companies don't enable it it or use it because you have your phone to act as a parent device. The resolution can also be changed, but I don't know how that will change UI elements.

Wi-fi widget

Why is it when I turn on wifi using the android stock widget I have to actually open the wifi menu in the settings app before it auto-connects?
Might be a bug, else it's a pointless button. Well it's useful to turn it off, but why would auto-connect be disabled?

I noticed this too... if you stay on that home screen with the widget and wait after turning it on, it will auto connect, but if you move off that home screen or open an app or do anything, it will not auto-connect.
I think it is just a bug, since that isn't the way it worked in previous builds.
Yea mine does this as well, it's incredibly annoying.
My phone autoconnects every time.
I find it so strange how every Nexus one, while sharing the same OS and build, manages to be so different from each other.
Also, does anyone else feel like they're moving back into the realms of the G1, aka less-than-half-baked release? Methinks Google forgot the self-raising flour when baking their cakes.
There are so many bugs it's hard to believe they get away with it. If it weren't for the fact that it's Google branded I probably would have abandoned Android with the G1.
Yeah it auto-connects for me if I stay on the same screen but any movement after pressing the button cancels the action. Anyone know a fix?
Maybe cyanogen could fix it in his ROM.
Mine connects fine from the widget. I'm using the default one that starts on your desktop with Android 2.1.
In terms of "not baking their cakes," keep in mind that this is still a pretty early release for Android overall, a very new release for Android 2.0, and the very first release for the Nexus One. Android already handles as much as your leading OS, even though it's very new and on such unique hardware. Growth is to be expected; patience is a virtue.
I believe it has something to do with rooting because mine connected fine before rooting but now i have to open settings for it to connect now after root.

It can't be as I haven't rooted my phone yet, I'm waiting for the OTA update first (or for it to included in a ROM).

Yeah I know; I suppose i'm just picking faults. I think it's somewhere in between WinMo and Iphone OS.
Don't get me wrong, they're nothing alike, and Android is worlds apart, but what I mean is; Windows mobile is massively customisable (even from stock), but it's full of bugs and pretty ugly and sluggish. The iPhone is extremely restricting but is more appealing. Android lands somewhere between those realms; being relatively customisable (yet "easy" to hack and change) and also pretty.
I have to admit I was impressed with android from day one, where it had been released for such a short period of time and still had fewer bugs than winMo and more features than the iPhone.
It's just those small things/bugs that niggle at you until it drives you crazy

Thanks for the review, however I can't watch the video because my workplace has blocked youtube. What is the overall verdict? Good or Bad? Also, is it waterproof?
I love the look of this watch.
thank you very much for the review, the truth that I like, you know any way I can upgrade to 4.3 to work with smarthpone.
thank you very much

Well its gotten wet in the rain so far withou any adverse effect... Not going to submerge in water tho lol..
Its lacking tru call handling and notifications support at the moment. Doesnt quite 'integrate' with my note 2 just yet (running 4.3)... But i can seemlessly send pictures, apps, video via Bluetooth consistently without any issues. Wifi works 110% perfect.
As a watch its great... Just added GO locker for more variety. Its def for those gadget geeks who are really good with this kind of stuff

have you tried paring bluetooth headset to it?
by "Its lacking tru call handling" do you mean that it is not capable of receiving and making calls?
Well the watch itself is a phone.. And this is how its recognized via bluetooth. U can do file transfer and stuff but it doesnt really interface with your primary smart phone.... I believe they are still working on the application to make this possible. They appear to be doing things a little backwards

Please take some shot with phone's camera and upload! I'd like to see the camera quality. Maybe video if it is possible. THX!
Can you tether it to a phone so you can use the phone's internet connection? This is something most smartwatches seem to be lacking, even though it should be included if the manufacturer doesn't mess with the software (i.e. removing that option intentionally)

I meant that it is lacking phone pair connectivity. Such as ; if you get a text the phone cannot notify you, or if you have a call coming in the watch will not notify you... this software doesn't exist yet. I have tried numerous apps on play store but no luck as of yet.

It's a 2 mega pixel camera... the quality isn't too bad overall... video quality is actually Very Good... i sent a video from the watch to my galaxy note 2 and the resolution was very surprising..... it was good. not too much distortion - The only thing is that the frame rate is less so you will noticing a little skipping vs a high quality galaxy note or s4 camera would take.. this is expected though.
Hey ,
Can you tell us if the watch has vibration?
Does it vibrate when you get a call or a sms/email?

I really appreciate the effort of this watch's Chinese manufacturer. IMO, this watch is even better than all of the so-called "smart watch" on the market at the moment :good: (edit: especially the Galaxy Gear)

I can't tell you about the call as I have not put a sim card in it yet, but It does have vibration capabilities as it vibrates when you turn off the watch. The vibration is nice and strong.
thank you very much , you just made my day
I have just ordered it from chinavasion and got me to 179 including dhl shipping
My next question is about the battery , how much would it last for a wifi video call for example?

On my watch, The battery does drain pretty fast and it runs very hot. I am not sure if others here have the same problem, but I am about to play around with a Governor app too see if I can improve battery life/cool it down.

I thing i haven't tried is changing the governor to POWERSAVE while running the STOCK LAUNCHER.
Of course i'm on ADW EX launcher so it would be stupid to run powersave...

Good question. If it does have 3G, anyone tried hotspoting it yet? Would be great to be able to have a wrist hotspot.
Be nice to know if this chip set has a GPS bc navigation would be great if it is supported too.

No !
Nobody is going to port to "old" hardware. Everybody wants to sell us new stuff.
And I'm not sure anything currently on the market even has the power for Android (Wear), nevermind whatever checklist of items Google decided compliant devices must have.

Sorry, the Pebble Smart watch isn't powerful enough.
The CPU is an STM32F205RE Cortex M3, the chip can be at best 120Mhz, unsure if the Pebble even has that much, perhaps only 80Mhz.
It has <128Kb of memory and only 1Mb of storage.
Essentially the cpu would need to be >10 times faster with 5-10 times the memory and several thousand times more storage for Android Wear.
That btw doesn't mean that Pebble can't make a good eink Android Wear device, in fact, they should do it. But it will be a completely different and vastly better device compared to their current offering.
Yeah, it needs to have more power in order to do that.

Anyway to fix horrible multi window implementation on 7.x

Hope I'm not the only one with this thought but coming from 6.x to 7.x I find that the new mutiwindow support is horrible.
I have turned on the settings in the development options to all of all apps but still it's like night and day vs previous mutiwindow support.
Resizing is a pain as it needs to be super specific and also depending on the apps you use they don't actually run at the same time.
For example of playing a game and then trying to access the browser the game will stop unless it's the active window.
Same for Netflix. I can't browse and use Netflix at the same time without the video stopping.
Seems the new setup unless using Google Apps like YouTube allocates the active resources on the active window.
Previously I think it simply split processes and resources so both apps could work
I would have figured Samsung would have refined if at least not kept their version
Am I the only one hating this?
Is there any way around this for now?
Anyone?
I don't make much use of this, but I think the real issue is that in Marshmallow we had Samsung's implementation of multi-window. In Nougat, Google added multi-window to Android, so I think Samsung dropped their own in favor of what's built into Android. Which simply isn't as good as what the 3rd or 4th generation of Samsung's multi-window offered. I don't think there's anything we can do about it, unfortunately.

Thanks. Unfortunate that they would simply stop with their own implementation since it was so much better and flexible vs the default one
Yes I agree that this new implementation is rubbish compared to the touchwiz one on MM.
Such a shame that we're stuck with it unless we downgrade.

Google Pixel as LightPhone 2 (distraction free but functional smartphone)

I've always liked the core idea of the LightPhone 2.
A phone that has less distraction but is not a total feature phone.
The Lightphone 2 is great and all but mainly the price is what really turns me off.
A few other cons are lack of e-hailing apps(atleast in my country, e-hailing service like Grab and Uber are much cheaper than Taxi), lack of choice in messaging system(I'm not trying to live near off the grid here) and no camera(that can be actually used for taking pictures of receipt or scanning a document(I live in a between a first world and third world country)) .
I think that the Pixel is a suitable quick replacement for it.
It's just very cheap at this point.
The OLED display just makes sense to use a total minimalist white on black UI (yes I do realize the Lightphone uses E-ink but compared with an LCD based phone OLED just makes sense)
The Pixel has a bad processor intensive task, it will overheat doing nothing. Underclocking it would still be way faster than a Lightphone 2 and would still serve its purpose
and many more
...but only if there is a ROM built for that.
And for that I want to ask any experts here is it possible to just stripdown the Android 10 rom, mod the launcher for the UI, tweak how the notification works to achieve the above?
Did anyone ever make a ROM for this?

No, I think there are there already Blloc OS but its still not good enough for me... There is also the LightPhone 2 which is crazy because its really pricey but still doesn't hit the right spot for me still...
Recently I bought the Nokia 6300 4G which is great for detox but still want that Whatsapp feature but there are other few importants things that I still cant do
I'm already planning on taking a used up Pixel and creating a rom myself

unfortunately no... the CLOSEST and most BUDGET I've seen so far is the Qin F21 Pro and its variant. It has a small touchscreen so you won't be sucked in as much, the non google play version(you can install apk but its very tedious to sideload an apk via usb).
I still think the best way is if a dev suddenly want to make a Lightphone OS style custom rom for a Pixel
