Lollipop Wifi Issue with Open Networks (screenshots included) - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At work, I sign-on to the open wifi here. With KitKat, I would get a notification that there is an open network. I would then click on the notification which would open a browser window saying something about network security, do you still want to proceed. I would proceed, accept the IT dept. disclaimer and then be signed on to the wifi.
With Lollipop, I click on the notification which brings me to the screen in "Screenshot1.png" below. It brings me to a blank screen so I click on the setting button on the screen which is what you see on the screenshot. I then click on "Use this network as is" but it does not sign me onto wifi. Once I close out of the window, I get the same wifi notification again (Screenshot2.png).
So my question is, how do I sign-on to the wifi? I noticed the old notification would take me to a browser window where the new notification takes me to a non-browser sign-in window.

Bumping to see if anyone has any thoughts on this. I cant' be the only one having this issue.

Yes exactly the same issue here.
We use a captive portal sign in page and then a ssl web page for authentication through to the web.

Found http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/2mkh95/ on reddit relating to this issue.
To sign-on you have to do the following (credit reddit):
1. tap sign in to Wi-Fi
2. press the three dots
3. choose you network as is
4. open chrome and go to any website that will redirect you to sign in page
5. sign in
While this is working for me, its a drag to go thru all that. Further more, I'm finding that if I'm not quick enough between steps 3 and 4, I get the open wifi notification again and have to start the process all over again.

Maybe bookmark the login page and place it on your home screen, turn off open networks notification and save the network so you automatically connect? You'll have some time without a working connection, but as soon as you notice, just tap the bookmark shortcut - Would that work?

Thanks for the tip. I'd like to try this. If I turn off open network notifications, how will I sign-on? I believe I HAVE to go thru the sign-on window shown in screenshot 1 of my first post before I can open up the browser. And in order to do that, I have to get the notification to get to the sign-in page.

The only open networks I've ever used, didn't need other sign on, than the login website that I got redirected to. So I think you can just let the phone connect, and then at any time open a browser. I even think the phone might give a notification when it discovers that there's a login-page blocking internet access?

Unfortunately I have to go thru the "Android" sign-on page and click "use network as is" before I can get to the browser to the sign-on page. This is in spite of having the wifi connection saved. If I try to just open the browser and get to the sign-on page once I get notification of the wifi network, it uses mobile data instead and does not take me to the sign-on page. That said, adding a bookmark shortcut was a good tip and has helped shorten the process up a bit.

Wow, that Lollipop behavior sounds sucky
Hopefully that's one of the things that will be ironed out with future updates!

I'm having this issue with my Moto X 2014 trying to login to my works wifi.
The main difference is when I try to use Chrome to sign into the network (once I'm connected to it through Wifi) I get a Page saying that 'Your connection is not private' it then goes on to say that people might be trying to steal information from google and basically complains that the certificate is invalid. No matter what I click on (even the Advanced tab) I can't continue.
However with my Samsung Tab S if I connect to the exact same network and also use Chrome to login I get the same error message yet if I click the Advanced tab I then can see an option to continue regardless (or words to that effect). Once I click that its fine. Yet this option is missing on my phone, almost as if the mobile version of chrome is clipping the web page so you can't see it. I'm going to install Firefox and give it a try (when I can connect to a wifi network).
As an update. I installed Firefox and again tried login into the network by going to Google homepage, again I got a similar message saying that the connection was unsecure and the certificate was invalid, again I couldn't continue. However I decided to try and go to a different URL and again I got the same message but this time I had an option to continue even though I knew the risks. This I did and then was prevented with my companies WiFi login page, after I entered my details it worked fine. I could also use Chrome browser without any issues.
SO if anyone else is having this problem, install Firefox and then go to any website other than google. Then hopefully you'll be able continue and login to your works unsecure WiFi.

How come some of the sites that I visit, I always get the message "Could not locate server"?
Is there a setting that I need to do to be able to view the websites normally?

Are you attempting to visit the sites via WiFi or your data plan? Any sites in particular?
If you can visit the site using your WiFi connection, but not using your data connection, it could be a proxy issue.
At any rate, more details please!
Im using wi-fi connection

You REALLY are going to need to give more information than that. Please be thorough.
(as far as I know, nobody here has ESP)
when you say thorough, what do you mean? i have no proxy connection settings whatsoever.
Is it possibly a problem with your ISP? Do the URLs work part of the time? If so, I would think that you are sending the correct request to your ISP but that they cannot get a good connection.
Just using some logic, I have no real knowledge of the message and its meaning
Brad
Which browser are you using? I find I.E. particularly temperamental. Try Opera Mobile or Opera Mini 4.
If you're using WIFI it shouldn't be a service provider issue
Internet connection settings for Pocket PCs are soo convoluted. But basically...
If you connect through WI-FI, you have to do these steps
Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Advanced tab > [Select Network]
On the top drop-down box that says "Programs that automatically connect...." Select "My Work Network"
Go to Comm Manager and turn on WI-FI. If you turn on WI-FI before doing these steps, sometimes it will still give you error messages
If you switch connection to a data plan, do the above steps again but instead of selecting "My Work Network", pick the data plan account that you created from the top drop-down box

Problem with Twitter app Peep

Am I just being a tool? (Don't answer that)
I can't seem to select a link in a tweet on the new HTC HD2 twitter app in Sense. If it try to select a link or twitpic it just brings up a menu asking if I want to reply to the tweet. In other twitter clients it takes you to the picture or brings up the internet.
Also, it doesn't seem to be updating if I click 'Update now' in the menu. I just get a 'Download error'. It says it's connected to my HSDPA network
OK I might have just answered my own question
It appears you have to select the person and go to their profile, in there you can actually double click on the link and it takes you to Opera.
Still not sure about the 3g connection problem though.
Anyone else getting this?
Seems to work fine over wi-fi
Yes I experience the same problem when connected via 3G. Mine also works fine when connected to wi-fi too. Tried it again at the station this morning and again it failed to update or connect via 3G. Not sure what the problem is?!?
I have problem with posting to Twitter on wifi and on 3G (or GPRS), i dont know what was a problem, but after hardreset is it OK, only auto download doesnt work, manually updates, posting, profiles, everything OK on any connection (AS, WIFI,3G...)
tiny url not working
anyone has this problem?
Strange 'L' appeaiorng before url in Peep
Hi All
This is a bit strange. I'm using Peep and it's mostly OK. The only problem I'm experiencing is when I use the 'insert maplink' geo-tag feature...it shortens the url but puts an 'L' before the shortened url.
Example -
L:http://tinyurl.com/yd32dsm
If I then check it in Twitter, the addition of the 'L' stops the link being clickable. It doedn't seem to matter which shortening service I use
Obviously, I can manually remove the 'L' from Peep before updating, but it's a bit of a pain. Anyone else getting the same problem?
Cheers
Steve
Nope not getting that problem on Geo tagging I use TinyURL.
Ref opening links you can open them straight from twitter feed but you have to be exact where you press and just a quick tab not a long one. It can sometimes be annoying but I think I must just have the knack. Also opera being open quickens the process.
Hello,
I also see the problem with connecting to twitter. I have not tried over WLan but when I try over normal 3G I get an error that connection to twitter was not successful. I have typed the correct login credentials.
Very strange...
my issue is that i deleted a msg on my pc but it still remains in peep

This is the issue I have. With the stock T-Mobile 1.43 ROM, Peep actually worked fine over GSM/3G and WiFi even though everything else on the phone was buggy, laggy and unstable.
Using 1.61 I now have the experience where Peep and MSN messenger will only connect through WiFi. If I try to connect with GSM/3G I get the connection error. Is this issue present in 1.48, as I'm thinking of giving that a try.
i also cannot connect over gprs, how strange.
has any fix been found yet?

Thats a general twitter thing, I think. I've seen a lot of apps behave like that
Same problem here!
It worked once or twice but generally it doesn't. Really annoying as it is one of the features I would like to use most.
Wohoo!!! Fixed it. The key is that you need to update the connections database, reboot and THEN disable the proxy.
1) Goto Settings > Wireless Controls > Tap Data Connection (the label, not the switch)
2) Tap menu, then Update Database
3) Follow the instructions and then OK the reboot.
4) Once restarted, goto Settings > Menu, All Settings. Then Connections, Connections again, then Set up my proxy server.
5) Disable the proxy and you're all set.
WOHOO!!!!

Another solution?

Some apps not triggering HSPDA connection

Hi all, got my new HD2 yesterday, got phonealarm, TOMTOM7 and a few other apps loaded plus all the HTC patches and latest ROM. Its an HTC branded phone on T Mobile PAYG.
When I go to check my e-mail, it pops up asking me to check my data settings with a dismiss button. When I try and use Twitter it says the service is temporary unavailable. When I use the Weather to update I get a similar message.
Browsing and FB are fine, I have requested the T mobile settings but they arrive as a voicemail message which is odd. Any ideas?
Thanks all.
tmo uk use a proxy, which is the first thing to turn off,
settings menu all settings connections* connections manage existing connections proxy tab untick uses a proxy.
try that, if that doesnt work, at the * point above, there should be a 'connection setup' app. Give that a try, but dont forget running it will probably re apply the proxy.
Genius maty, works a treat now. Also my twitter is now working. Could you explain why unticking it works? Cheers.
i'd assume its to do with the proxy traffic shaping in some way. i believe tmo compress images too,
Its the fault it did'nt even try, just popped up with the connections error and the dismiss button.
Just tried it again, fine, goes onto 3G, jumps to H, then checks mail no prob.
Only other thing to sort its the weather, it picks up my local town which is coded in. But the "my location" won't work. I get a connection error Retry YES or NO. Get this regardless of whether its wireless or active sync.

cant log into google with Darchdroid

so i flashed to Darchdroid rom, but i CANT log into my google account. every time i try it says unable to contact server.
Skip the initial setup. Open up your settings. Go to wireless & networks. Turn off mobile network and turn it back on 10 seconds later. Then go to your account section and set up your Google account.

Wifi Question (w/Screenshot)

My workplace has an open wifi network that I use. When I get in the building, I get the notification and sign-on to it. Lately i have been getting two notifications as shown in the screenshot below. The "Sign into Wi-Fi network" is what I use to sign into the wifi but I'm not sure what the "Sign into network" notification is. I've only started seeing this notification recently and it may be due to a setting(s) I might have changed but can someone tell me what the "Sign into network - HOME" is?

Open a browser and see if there's a "portal" redirect page you have to log in to or agree to conditions or something like that.

There is a browser page that I use to sign-on. My question is, what is the difference between the two notifications? I only need and use the first one.
