I just upgraded my Nexus 7 from the factory image. I edited the "-w" out of the update image in flash-all.sh , and expected not to lose my data. In fact I did lose my data. No tragedy, on boot it reinstalled the apps from google play automatically, but I did have to do a bunch of tedious reconfigures for many apps.
Now I'm up to doing the same for my N4, which has a lot more things to configure. Can I avoid losing my data?
My N4 (and the N7) were rooted with various optimizations, which is why I;m using the factory image and not an OTA.

I reccomend the CM12 unofficial build located http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...cyanogenmod-12-unofficial-build-mako-t2936332
No issues to speak of, other than the ASOP keyboard crashes (just install google keyboard on the play store), and you have the disable all the junk ASOP apps. Other than that, it is fast and rock solid stable. I had an issue with the flashable stock rom, and couldn't get it working right.

If you've modified or deleted any system files the ota will not work. You could try flashing the factory image manually. Flash each image except userdata.img. userdata.img will wipe your device as you found out on the n7

Well, you could flash stock recovery and just DL the OTA the normal way. Kindof ass backwards but it will work. The "flashable stock ROMs" on here have issues.

I doubt it'll work. Sounds like he has modified system files. The ota will fail

rather them removing -w, running all img files manually is always best option. My cent though.
Don't run Userdata.img and you should have all your data intact.

The only time I ever heard that removing the -w did not work was when someone thought they removed it, but they only made the change in memory in Notepad++, and never saved the change out to the file. I have used this method successfully with every single update on my Nexus 4 since the phone was released. The OTA never works for me either and I use the factory image because I am rooted with TWRP, however I do remove any other changes (like disabling LTE and uninstalling Xposed) before flashing the factory image. If indeed this really is an issue with Lollipop, then that is a very disturbing mistake that that Google made.
It is a moot point for me anyway, as I wait a few weeks after any new release, or for the next .1 release to be issued, so that all the major bugs are fixed and all affected apps have been upgraded and patched; that way things just go smoothly and I don't have to rip my hair out. In the meantime I keep an eye on these forums for what works and what does not work.
Same as above i have updated through flashing factory img since 4.3 with -w removed and it has never removed/deleted any of my stuff..
OK, I went ahead and did the N4 update via flash-all.sh with the "-w" removed, and it worked with no problem and preserved all data.
I guess the problem I had with my N7 was a glitch in my update. My first attempt hung after a couple of steps, seemingly because the USB connection was through a USB HUB. I moved the connection to a direct USB port and started the flash-all from the beginning. Perhaps that explains why it lost my data, and re-installed the apps google knew about.
At any rate, taking out the '-w" works as expected on the N4 5.0 factory image update.

Some apps not working after updated to 4.2, so I'm considering back to 4.1.2.
Though I never done this before since the day I get Nexus 7,
I think use Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit should get it done.
But just for sure:
1. Do I need to unlock/root to flash factory 4.1.2 image? (I think it is not but not so sure)
2. Directory structure seems different from 4.1.2, is it OK just using Toolkit to backup/restore settings?
(Sorry for my English if anything looks impolite)
1) unlock bootloader yes; root no, as you're going to overwrite the system anyways.
Also I'd suggest not using a toolkit, just download the factory image off google's page and run the "flash-all.bat"
2) Use Titanium Backup to backup all app data, wipe after flashing 4.1.2 and then restore apps + data with Titanium again
I just downgraded this morning. All your data will be wiped .. ALL YOUR DATA ... meaning, after I got back to 4.1.2 I was having 13GB of free space on the tablet (out of 13 possible) .
So, if you HAVE a nandroid from the 4.1.2 days, save it to your computer (along with all your files).
If you don't have a 4.1.2 nandroid, at least create now a backup repository with whatever tool you prefer and then save the respective files to PC.
Then, flash the factory image for 4.1.2.
Then copy all your files back to the internal memory, install the backup tool and restore your apps.
The reason behind this is that the update from 4.1.2 to 4.2 has some scripts that are porting the original /data and /sdcard mounts to the new structure used in 4.2
When downgrading, you no longer have scripts to do that for you so the newly installed 4.1.2 will not recognize anything so it will bootloop like crazy (I tried first to restore just the /system ... but all the other data was already affected by the update so was no longer usable).
My thoughts:
If you got the ota, and things messed up, try flashing the 4.2 factory image. That seemed to help me. If you're not rooted already, I would recommend becoming familiar with the adb backup command to backup apps before doing anything else. You have to unlock the boot loader to downgrade or flash the factory 4.2 image, and this will wipe the device.
Once you update either way, definitely take the time to root. You can then use adb restore or titanium backup to restore from the adb backup you made before unlocking.
Just be aware that adb backup doesn't seem to backup all apps, and that titanium backup isn't exactly fast parsing through a big adb backup file.

Assumed you are referring to downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.1.2 and rooted to run TB, so the basic stock rom is up & running otherwise, correct?
Let's try Plan B instead - go into (Custom) Recovery and wipe dalvik cache first, then reboot. Give it a few minutes to settle and try to do your TB restore WITHOUT data, and see if it works. The /SD and/or /SD/0 directory structures are setup differently on the N7 and trying to retore with your custom settings will just make it more difficult & complicated. If this works, you can then try to selectively restore one or more with data and hopefully without going into endless bootloop again.
Plan C - go to Play Store, then Settings and "All" - you should see all of your Apps and what's installed, etc. - and install from there, it's semi-manual but it works for me 99.8% of the time when it would otherwise freeze within TB, especially true when switching custom Rom & kernels.
I usually manually copy & move back items such as documents, pictures & mp3's, etc. from standalone/usb backup drives or cloud storage back into the device once everything else are up & running properly.
Let us know if this helps & working for you or not.
Thankss !

Thanks for your help , but I think the problem was that there were apps in the backup only compatible with the custom ROM I had and android 4.2.1 xD
I restored the apps one by one , but I think if I deleted the extra custom rom apps , the process would have finished without any problems
Hi fellow people,
i'm a noob just made my xda account like 5 mins ago. I've been trying to search for my problem but I haven't really a found a direct answer. So yesterday I just got my Samsung Galaxy nexus update to 4.2.1. I was really excited until I started having the battery issues, screen lock issues, and overheating problem. I really don't like 4.2.1 and want to downgrade my version back 4.1.2. My carrier is the Mobicility (Canadian). I did not do anything previously with this phone such as rooting it, doing all the funky stuff that will void my warranty. I heard about flashing some google images to get back 4.1.2 but I'm not sure if I need to root or how to like do it through the gnex toolkit that mskip made. As well what if the difference between yakju and maguro? I heard if you flash the wrong image it will brick your phone or something like that. If there is a method without having to root it and lose all my contacts, then I would prefer that a lot.
Thanks,

You dont have to root but you need to UNLOCK the bootloader which will obviously erase all your data(and VOID your warranty). you can find the factory image here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images . just flash the appropriate image and you should be as good to go.

Hey guys,
i noticed something weird after ugrading to android 4.3 (official images).
After the upgrade and setting up my n4 i noticed that my available storagespace was only 6gb, but i have a 16gb model so it must be around 12gb user available space(????) at minimum i guess.
Somebody noticed this too or is there some explaination for this??
I clean flashed the sh*t out of it so that shouldn't be the problem i think.
Cheers

I don't recall the exact cause of this. But if you flash the factory images with the bat file it will be back to normal.
That will also wipe your phone though so keep that in mind.

I'm sure it can be done no problem flashing them one by one. Just can't recall what causes it. Whether you need to fastboot erase things or what. Maybe don't flash the userdata. Img Had it happen to me on the original nexus 7.
I'm pretty sure if you look around in the how to threads its probably mentioned and explained. Or a Google search. I just don't care. Since the flashing script fixes it / doesn't cause it.
I think it mostly comes up from erasing cache instead of formatting it. I ran into it the other day too when going back to stock. You can try wiping cache if you installed a custom recovery, otherwise a factory reset (formatting data/cache) cleared out up for me

Sgace,
I have the same problem.
Did you manage to solve it?
albundy2010,
Do you mean the file named flash-all.bat?
If yes, what should I do with it? enter the bootloader and double click on the file? I mostly used toolkits by now...
Thanks!
Edit: Nevermind, it seems a factory reset (from the phone settings, not recovery) fixed the problem. Wierd.
It will return to phone to a clean full stock 4.3. It will be exactly like how a device would ship from Google with 4.3 on it. Except that the boot loader will still be unlocked.
To use the bat file its fairly simple.
1. Unpack the file you get from Google. Do not extract the files you end up with any further.
2. Depending on how your system is set up it can vary. So just do this to make to be sure. Move everything that was extracted to whatever directory has the fastboot executable ( fastboot exe)in it. Toolkit folder maybe ( I don't use those awful things so no idea where it puts things.). Or the platform tools folder in the SDK if that's installed.
3. Yes the phone needs to be in the bootlader. Once you're in the boot loader just click on the bat from within the folder with the fastboot.exe from step 2.
All this is assuming your computer has the proper drivers / working fastboot etc.
Still lost or can't figure it out, follow the flash factory images guide.
For me also a factoryreset from settings did the job.
Thnx for the help Guys!!
Cheers

I have multiple user profiles on my Nexus 10, and as you know the is no good way to backup/restore multiple accounts.
I'm currently running stock 4.2.2, and is wondering what the best way to upgrade to 4.3 is? Should I just use the system update and reroot the device afterwards? Will this keep qll my profile data etc?
How did you do it?

Okay so what I finally did was this: I don't know if you rooted+unlocked it with the wugfresh tool but I had done that a few months ago.
So I opened the nexus tool rootkit from wugfresh --> it updated to the latest version
After that I made a full back up of my data and my system
Then I pressed Flash Stock +Unroot after that it asked if I wanted to install the 4.3 after unrooting
I selected that and followed the orders etc etc
It all went pretty smoothly and now I have an unlocked + unrooted 4.3 nexus 10
You should first check whether fastboot is configured well and update some stuff in de Android SDK manager (I don't know which stuff and I'm not sure if that updating is something that you must do, I'm guessing it won't be necessary ) But the fastboot thing is really important I guess.
Also maybe you better wait till somebody with more computer knowledge answers your questions, because I don't know what I'm doing
I like to screw around with my devices and it hasn't had a bad consequence yet. Just try to google everything if your not totally sure about it.

Did this method made you loose your data/settings? Think this is what i will try. Nandroid backup device, flash stock recovery run ota upgrade, and install custom recovery and root afterwards. Hope this woill work
Yes I lost all my data nut I also had backed up al my data with backup data+media of the wugfresh tool. Both backing up the data and retrieving it afterwards took a long time but I had patience and now I have almy data back again
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Nexus 10 met Tapatalk 4
I'm not sure restoring the data will be stable, since the directories structure has been slightly changed between 4.2 and 4.3.
I also has multiple accounts. I've tried to backup the users apps with Titanium backup. I thought I would be able to create myself the user profiles, then restore the apps with Titanium. However, this didn't work since Titanium is unable to correctly backup and restore apps for multiple user accounts.
I ended up installing manually the apps for the other user.
Also note that even for your main profile, restoring the apps may require restoring the device uid. Titanium is able to do that if you backup its settings.
So far my atempt left me with a nexus that wont boot, dont know if it is the updated bootloader, but it vibrates a lot at boot, and then goes to bootloader. Think i better just flash the 4.3 stock image and reroot and restore what i can :-/
I'm still on 4.2.1 on my nexus 4 (been a little slow with the updates...they always fail on me so I have to manually flash). My question is, can I download and flash the latest version (4.4.4) or is it best to update my way up (4.2.2, then 4.3, then 4.4, so on and so forth)?
If you have a flashable zip of 4.4.4 you can update to that. Otherwise I'd update to 4.4 and then incremental.
Make sure everything is up to date, recovery, boot img ect. ect. I had an issue with twrp and had to update it, problem was that the twrp updates would fail. Long story short, had to go the adb route and update my recovery...all went well after that.

If you don't mind losing all of your data, then you can simply download the latest factory image from here and install it via one of the toolkits or using fastboot. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
If you're rooted, then you need to update to the latest TWRP, flash the latest radio and bootloader and then install any 4.4.4 ROM and Gapps. A factory reset is recommended however.

When on a Nexus 4 the LTE is activated (hack) then flashing the latest radio is not a good idea.
After flashing LTE is gone.

Actually, if you download the factory image from google and extract it, you can change the flash-all.bat file so that it doesn't wipe your data.
Right click the file and select "edit" and delete the "-w" between "nutfastboot" and "update" towards the end and it prevents your data from being wiped. From there, you put your device into bootloader mode, then on your computer just right click the folder that you extracted while pressing shift and select "open command window here." Type in "flashboot devices" to make sure the phone is seen by the system, then type "flash-all.bat" and boom, good to go. Just flashed a factory image without wiping the data.
Upgraded right to 4.4.4. Did have to root again and reinstall TWRP, but the Nexus Root Toolkit makes that easy, lol. My only thing is that everything seems to take a bit longer. Transitions are smooth, but there's a lag from when I select something, to when it opens. For example, I use widget locker. When unlocking, it used to immediately unlock. Now it takes about 2 or 3 seconds, but that may just be the app itself. Probably would have been best to flash a little at a time (4.3, then 4.4, then 4.4.4) but oh well. Maybe when I get back from vacation next week, lol.
Also, wasn't concerned about losing LTE because I never really needed it to begin with. I only ever use data when i'm on my lunch at work and it's mostly playing something like Ruzzle or reading news articles. Plus, LTE pretty much cut my battery down to half of what it normally is. I'll be getting a new phone when the next Nexus is released anyway so i'm not too concerned about lack of LTE on my current phone. We got, what, 4 months before the next one is due?
Where was this ages ago?

Are you sure, because I didn't take it out. All I did was delete "-w" from the batch file and that was it. Although, I do think I remember something about that as a secondary "just in case you're really worried about it" option.
Happy to be Guinea Pig
I had problems with my launcher @matrix0886 when I just deleted the "-w"
I'll give what @jd1639 said a shot too
Sorry for the late reply. I don't use the stock launcher (I use widget locker for my lockscreen and Apex for my home launcher) so I obviously haven't noticed any problems, lol. But how did the other option go for you @knightowl439?

As of now i keep in unlocked, rooted with stock kernel and.. no custom recovery. Bad thing is i've done some crap steps, other than not having a recovery:
1 after unlocking/rooting, i uninstalled some pre-build apps (korean/pying/imeikeyboard/exchange..)
2 everything seemed fine
3 today i tried sideloading 5.1.1 and, of course, it gave me error "couldn't find 'koreanblabla'"
4 i deleted those apps from the ota
5 it passes the apps check but failed upon signature verification - no surprise, i was expecting this.
Now, how do i have that - modified - ota signature ok?
Wipe is not an option, i'd rather buy a new phone lol
Installing those app neither, i'd wanna stick with "my way" : F
I've found these.

BTW, along with overclock.net - and reddit lol -, that's one of the best communty driven portal.
Thanks.

Due to the way 5.0+ does signature checks, if you are even just rooted with stock recovery and no other changes, you have to unroot and revert to stock to install the OTA. It now checks the whole partition and will error if even a byte is out of place. You can either do that, or just flash the images directly, which I find to be the easiest.
Why you don't use factory image and edit flash-all.bat. Remove -w switch and flash. You will lose root and recovery but all apps and data remains.

whatwaitwhat?!
what will that do? is that similar to windows' refresh?
Yes, it will install complete system without wipe. But you must edit flashall.bat and remove -w switch.
what if i reinstall those uninstalled apps? will the integrity check be ok?
If you decide to use factory image there is no integrity check.
mmm

No, because you had to be rooted to remove them in the first place. You have to be unrooted to use the OTA, it has nothing to do with those apps. If you replace, you will just get an error at a different part of the OTA sideload process.
Use the images, as another poster said, you can remove -w from flashall to prevent the wipe (I prefer to always wipe to ensure a clean install however. I don't have anything which I don't backup or can't reinstall quickly)
ok, guys, think i'm done.
using Nexus Root Toolkit i've flashed 5.1.1 update without wiping.
Thanks. pity that i didn't make it the hard way lol
