Hi All
Getting a nexus 4 on monday, coming from a samsung s3,
Im used to rooting and flashing on the s3 is it any different on a nexus?
Hoping to try a new lollipop rom, is there still any issues with this?
Ive had a quick look at the newbie guides will really study them when i get it
but just want to be aware of any/all issues before then. Im assuming its basically the same routine
but am very unsure about kernels more than anything, I had a galaxy note before the S3 and it was different
way with rom and kernel flashed separately. S3 was rom and stock kernel, then flash a custom kernel, is it the same here?
cheers
I find it mostly easier. First you don't need to use Odin, all flashing is done with the terminal through fastboot. Second you need to unlock the bootloader before you can do anything. When flashing the only thing dangerous is when changing the bootloader, which doesn't happen that often. and even then you can still unbrick the phone

Hello XDA! I'm wanting to get back into using a rootted phone. In fact, I already have rooted my note 3.
I really want to get into a custom ROM, to remove some bloatware, and to be able to theme the system fully.
I previously had a samsung galaxy fascinate (telus) that I had rooted, and I had tried to get a custom ROM on it. Turns out though that I may had messed up! My phone was soft bricked. So I got a dongle made up for me, re-flashed froyo and got rollin again, However I was afraid to try to flash a custom rom. I used it for a year and a half on stock after that, and then decided to try to flash it again. I again had messed up the process, (I think Odin hates my PC). I ended up with a boot looped phone.
Now that I have my note 3, I'm loving it. However I don't want to have to deal with TouchWiz.
My question to you, xda. Is, what is currently involved in getting into a custom ROM on the note 3?
Is there a guide to getting started with this kind of stuff. My phone is rooted, but I have no custom recovery (I'm not sure how to do that).
I'm tempted to just wait for cyanogenmod for the note 3 as it seems to be very popular (and probably would have better support documentations). However If there is a reasonably simple alternative I can get a new rom soon.
Thanks a lot for reading this wall of text, and apologies if this gets asked frequently. I'm just terrified of losing my precious new phone

here is a list of custom recoverys download your one for your phone and flash with odin http://galaxynote3root.com/clockworkmodtwrp-recoveries/
It's all quite a simple process really , just make sure you follow any guide precisely.
Is there another PC you are able to use if you think the culprit is your own PC ?
I'd also recommend the Note - X- Rom very nice Themes, Battery, Performance boost.
all the best with your flashing Remember to always Backup your EFS and do a Nandriod backup before anything ! :good:
Hi so I recently got a SM-N900v and I want to install a ROM, Ive been reading from multiple places and they said that the Verizon Note 3 has a locked bootloader (Idk what that means) and that in order to flash roms you need SafeStrap instead of (CWM or TWRP). I also see other tutorials where they tell you to directly flash TWRP/CWM via Odin so I'm really skeptical since there seems to be contradictions and that's why i'm asking here for confirmation.
Also the roms that i have in mind are Eclipse Note 3 TW 2.2(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620723) or Cyanogen Mod 11 (https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=hltevzw&type=nightly) .
In the Eclipse post it said the device required to be running NC4 unified firmware in order for installing the ROM.
These are the specs of my Verizon Note 3

My device is rooted but I'm just confused whether SafeStrap is obligatory or not for flashing custom Roms. Also in some tutorials they mentioned that safe strap might brick your device or something like that. Sorry i'm not very knowledgeable and require assistance which would be extremely appreciated. Is CM 11 for Verizon Note 3 stable, I know its Nightly but does it have all the features like S-PEN etc.. Can my device flash these roms and if it can, which recovery firmware should I use safestrap or Cwm/TWRP?
Thanks
OK so I'm coming from the galaxy note 1 which I had no problems with due to the unlocked bootloader I presume and. I've been trying to figure out things on my own but I'm having trouble finding reliable information on some things and some other stuff I just don't know how to research even 1/10th as fast as asking about here. Any help or links to info are greatly appreciated. So I grabbed sm-n900v and not sure what may have changed since rooting installing SS and flashing alliance rom but rest of current info is kit Kat 4.4.2, N900VVRUCNC4, kernel version 3.4.0, hardware version N900v.07. Now the phone is unlocked and I'm using it on AT&T, I've got it all working with only couple issues. First I can't get any roms except alliance rom to work which is apparently related to kernel, baseband, firmware, or god knows. Then I've read some threads discussing either unified firmware or a leaked firmware being ideal and some stuff about certain modems/bootloaders/radios/firmwares/recoveries being better between NC2 and NC4 and even combinations working best I've followed some guides to just installing other roms but they don't work for me and have resulted in soft bricking so now I just need an full answer all in one instead of trying to figure it out from so many different sources. What modem/radio/bootloader/recovery/firmware/kernel should I be using to try out some roms keeping in mind I'm with ATT. Also should I be looking at ATT roms I assumed not to but figured worth asking. Also any other recommendations would be great I'm really just wanting a slim, stable, fast experience thanks for any help again.

Some use Verizon roms on att and t Mobil for roms on NC4 you need to Odin NC2 try looking up some instructions it helps. Safe strap is what you can use for recovery have busy box it's needed for it to work. Modems is for your signal I wouldn't bother. Firmwares are for ppl wanting to go back to stock mostly ect. But I'm sure the step you skipped was getting NC2 on there. Be careful before you do anything make sure your 100 percent sure or you can't have a bad day.

Ok, I've been running a Note 2 for a VERY long time since released. ROMing, rooting, etc was super simple and did it often. However, its been a year or more since I've had to do anything. Now with my new phone it seems there are a lot of new hoops to jump through. I already got the AT&T has detected something yada yada you're screwed yada yada and had to flash back stock firmware with Odin.
So I have rooted with towelroot. I've tried installing the TWRP via their app which caused the first soft AT&T brick.
I don't care about warranty, timer fuse, flash ticker etc etc. I bought the S5 new but second hand. I hate asking to be spoon fed how or where to look but I'm at my wits end. Don't even have to say anything just provide some links. I havent been on a stock android in years and this is killing me.
I've read something about needing Loki to bypass bootloader but saw it's for S4 and not sure what to do with it.
I have the US version of the Galaxy S5 running 4.4.2 Model 900A. I see CWM and TWRP links I've found say they can't do to bootloader lock so not sure where to go.
Thanks ahead of time!
Ok, waiting on my SD card to get here in the morning to use safestrap. What actual roms can I use? I see only things using stock kernel but can CM or other non basic stock roms?
Can I flash this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-resurrection-remix-5-3-4-t3033255
I'm on A01 bootloader and have flashfire etc via this thread. Running G900A_OF3_Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...w-to-update-to-g900aof2-5-0-keeproot-t3149146
I just got the Verizon variant of the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900V). I rooted it very easily using odin without tripping knox; that was easy.
I then began looking for ROMs; which for this phone, isn't easy with the locked bootloaders.
I came across a custom ROM, forgot off the top of my head but may go back to retry loading it.
Because these devices have locked bootloaders, any ROM flashed to it will need to have a separate bootloader flashed as well. The aforementioned ROM had one and I understood why, but after I odin flashed the new bootloader, i kept getting a black screen. OK no biggie, factory flash, re-root look for another ROM, except this time, I'm looking for a pre -rooted factory ROM. I came across a lollipop one, 0A8, was hoping for 0G5, but will deal with that later. Of course the ROM had to have, I guess for lack of a better word, a custom bootloader, or index, to tell the phone it's okay to use this software right? So now have lollipop, but have lost TWRP on boot. I'm not sure as to why this has happened, but it's a real pain I want to install and use ROMs on this phone. If I need to downgrade to have TWRP, that's no big deal. So here I am a lollipop stock ROM, rooted wihout TWRP, ugh.
Is there anyone who can help me find a solution to this, it's driving me mad. I just want to have a recovery installed and the klte version won't install. It must be a lollipop thing, but I would love to have cm12.1 when it comes out. And why does this stupid script keep popping up while I'm trying to type this. Just thought I'd share my frustrations or see if there is a way to get TWRP on lollipop?
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
Welcome to XDA.

The experts there may be able to help. Good luck.
U cannot load into twrp or safestrap above the n12 kernal.
If you want to access your recovery, you could try loading the n12 kernal via odin. Then use your recovery. Then reflash the right kernal for your rom via Odin to return to loading status.
That's what I hear is possible- you sound like you can rebuild if u get in trouble.
As for CM - we don't have an unlocked bootloader so that's unfortunately killing it at this time. We are stuck on stock rooted TW roms, or slight variations of TW roms.
