[Q] Rooted At&t phone on Tmobile, how do I get... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I have and Unlocked and rooted i9505 S4 (at&t branded), currently running the Goldeneye rom. I recently switched to T-mobile and wanted to make use of their wifi-calling feature but even after installing the t-mobile sim card, I dont see an option for wifi calling anywhere.
can anyone suggest a way I can get wifi-calling on my unlocked/rooted at&t branded s4? thanks!

I think you might need to take it to T-Mobile store. From my understanding, it is only for SGH-M919. AT&T phones are not compatible, even if you switch carriers. You may have to flash a T-Mobile Touchwiz rom, not sure. If anyone thinks I'm wrong, feel free to correct me. :cyclops:

Thx for the reply rootnerd! yea thats the problem i'm having... I read that some people got it working with a flashed a T-mobile rom while others said they couldn't. So I was trying to see if anyone could shed some light as to which T-mobile roms with the wifi calling feature could be flashed via safestrap on an at&t phone, because I don't really want to buy a new phone from t-mo just yet

Yeah this is where AT&T users would know the answer. I currently have a T-Mobile S4 but I really don't think it's worth keeping Touchwiz just for WiFi calling. But everyone has there own perspective.

[Q] Using an AT&T S4 with Verizon

Hey guys, I'm getting my hands on my friend's Galaxy S4. He is on an AT&T plan and got then phone from them through an upgrade. I personally prefer Verizon. I was wondering if I could get some help on making his phone work for me. I have a SIM card and everything, currently using a RAZR MAXX. I've done a little looking around, and from what I gathered, the phone is capable of working with verizon, but I'll have to load a different kernel and ROM onto it. I've looked through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557 that thread and found some nice info, but I'm not yet confident enough in my knowledge to go through with it. I've decided on the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305781 CLEANROM 1.6.5, but I don't know what else I'm going to need to have in order to make this phone work for me. I also don't know if I'll need to download the Verizion or the AT&T version of this. Thanks for all the help, I'm really wanting to make this work for me so I can actually get a powerhouse of a phone.

Your link is to a thread regarding other variants of S4 roms. Although you can use other S4 roms on the i337, the phone wont work on verizon carrier.

I'm not sure about that. ROM shouldn't matter too much, you just have to have it SIM unlocked and I believe it won't work too well due to the different frequencies between carriers and so you may not get LTE or something. Maybe someone can correct me though.

Verizon/Sprint phones use CDMA.
ATT/T-Mobile use GSM
I don't think you can use a CDMA phone on a GSM network and vice versa.
EDIT:
Per the replies below, it looks like it ispossible.
Here is a thread from the Verizon forums.
Also, if this WIKI page is correct, the Verizon S4 has both CDMA and GSM radio's where the ATT S4 only has a GSM radio.
The first thing to identify on the phone is whether or not it is on the stock AT&T ROM and what version that ROM is. If it is I337UCUAMF3 then changing the bootloader/kernal/rom is not even an option to begin with which means there would be no way to change out the modem to support other carrier bands (such as those used by Verizon). On top of that, although I have heard that the modem hardware is the same on all versions of the S4 I have not heard anyone confirm that they have successfully enabled CDMA services on the I337.

There are some that work on other networks without the need for modem changes. I read about some using the Verizon on AT&T, and I used the droid Bionic, a Verizon exclusive with a locked boot loader, on AT&T.

The strange thing is you can use a Verizon S4 on AT&T but you can't do it the other way around. Verizon phones all come unlocked, allowing you to use the phone anywhere around the world.
The AT&T S4 does not contain the CDMA chip allowing you to use it on the Verizon network, plus it has to do something with IMEI. If you give the IMEI to Verizon, they won't be able to locate which device you are trying to activate because it's not in the system. But if you use a Verizon S4 and put in a AT&T SIM card, you don't have to register the IMEI with AT&T or T-Mobile.

I can confirm that this is true about the verizon s4. I have a Verizon s4 and have used AT&T and straight talk on it. My brother uses that phone daily on his AT&T account.
I will test my AT&T s4 when I get around to finding my sim card.

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use an AT&T S4 on Verizon because the AT&T S4 doesn't have the CDMA capabilities.

Yea I noticed that the ATT S4 doesn't have everything that the Verizon S4 has in the service menu. Like I can turn on all the different bands in the service menu, but on my ATT S4 I get restrictions on wcdma.
I'm new to all this. I traded a iPhone for the ATT version because I couldn't figure out how to make the Verizon version work on straight talk..
Not two days after I have the ATT I somehow got it working... Lol. So now I have two with unlocked bootloaders and sum unlocked...

I believe its the same phone on each network... just software locked. Cant really find anything online about it but i think it may be possible.
Hope the experts weigh in on this

So you had Verizon sim unlock it? I'm assuming so otherwise I don't think it would work but you say its working with the exception of LTE? I'm unfamiliar with T-Mobile bands but I think the Verizon G2 has them all. Is there a difference in the plan to include their LTE? You're certain your area has LTE?
Check out the Nexus 4 forums. There are a ton of hybrid radios they flash to enable LTE and educate on Radio differences. There's a sticky on top for all LTE diilscussion. I don't think you'll need to flash radios, but you'll find resources on how to possibly enable it in APN settings.
Have you modified any APN settings?
Are you running stock software?
Edit: I am no expert. Hope that's OK?

as far as i know you would just have to modify the apns and tell it to connect to tmobile's network instead of verizon. sometimes it will just do it on its own though
Bump. I see people posting all over that it is possible but I cant seem to find the proper threads. Heck, people have talked about flashing a t-mobile stock rom to it and it works... Is this true?

This is indeed true, you need to be on the 11a firmware which means not taking the ota update to 12b from verizon. Then you flash the Tmobile stock ROM and a patch made by tangjun269 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49301459
You will also need to flash the 12b modem before flashing the Tmobile ROM and patch in order to get LTE

Does it work just like the tmobile variant? After its been flashed? And does hspa+ work too?

[Q] AT&T LG G2 unlocked to use on T-Mobile Carrier Rom/Root Questions

Hey Guys,
So, I bought a AT&T LG G2 phone (I had a gift card at Best Buy- they don't carry T-Mobile). I heard that AT&T had the same towers so it's easier to work with an unlocked phone through them, so I bought it there instead from T-Mobile itself.
However, now I realized I don't have some of the features I would have on a T-mobile LG G2, such as my wifi calling, etc. Now, since the phone is unlocked (and I just got it rooted), would installing a T-Mobile rom affect my phone in any way, good or bad? Should I only use AT&T roms? How would I use T-mobile app services?
I searched google for 2 days and couldn't find anything relevant to my question. I've used this site a lot in the past year-two for rooting and such. Thank you guys in advance for continuing to support open development for android.
Wondering the same, about to switch to tmobile.

Well, seems like no one has an answer to it...
Anyway, I went ahead and bought the phone. Since I do a lot of testing and rooting myself, this was the first time working on this type. I'm glad you posted, because I would have just forgotten about it now that I've solved the question I had... However, I figure it'd help in the future in case someone is also wondering the same.
Now, with that all stated... down to the answer.
If you bought an AT&T phone, and do an unlock code to use it on another carrier (such as T-mobile since they use the same towers), the rom you MUST use are the AT&T roms... NOT the T-mobile roms. The problem is, when you buy a AT&T phone, unlock it, and root your device to use another rom, it will not be compatible with T-Mobile roms because of the image files, etc. So yes- you will be losing all the features a T-Mobile rom would have such as wi-fi calling, etc...
However, a way to go about this (and it won't work with ALL the features that comes in a T-Mobile phone/rom), is to install a AT&T rom of your choice without all the crappy AT&T bloatware that you can't even use, and go to the T-Mobile section to look for an APK version of the files. Most of the time, T-Mobile roms will also remove the bloatware, however, some developers are kind enough to provide the bloatware APK files in case users would like to have certain one of them features, such as WiFi Calling.
So, that's how I did it, and it's working good.
PS- One last thing, you may have trouble going on the internet or playstore when you're unlocked to a different carrier. All you need to do is find the APN settings for your carrier. So in this case, I bought an AT&T phone, bought unlock code to use on my carrier T-Mobile, and got the T-Mobile APN settings set up, reboot, and I get all my 4G data, etc. You can get this by calling T-Mobile. Just say, you bought an unlocked phone and can't access data, internet, etc, and was told to set up a APN. Or, you can use google. :good:

So, would I be correct in stating that you will only get 4G in areas where it is offered @ 1900 MHz? What about 2100 MHz? Otherwise you will only get 3G HSPA+? As you can tell I'm a bit confused about compatibility between networks. According to wikipedia they will be doing away with 1900 MHz 4G by 2015. I'm trying to decide if it's worth buying an AT&T or Verizon phone to use on the T-Mobile pre-paid network because it seems the T-Mobile phones are not getting very much development.

AT&T LG G2 unlock for t moblie 411

Hi,
I did an unlock for this phone that i found in these forums. I have a generic tmobile sim card and put that in after i got the unlock code. from there i typed in the info and tmobile showed up on the banner.
well, i took the phone to a guy to trade for another, and now he's telling me he isn't getting any data, just phone and texting. of course, he's telling me this long after we made the trade.
is there any reason he wouldn't be getting data? or does an unlocked lg g2 only get edge speeds or something?
any help would be great.
My first guess is that he doesn't have the correct APN settings put in for his carrier.
You should let everyone know if the device is a stock rom, or another rom. Since the stock AT&T rom should not have the APN settings for Tmobile, but something like CM's rom should.
Worst case he should just need to enter the APN settings by hand, which isn't too hard to do. Other then that he could be in an area where Tmobile uses different bands for data then the AT&T version supports... that part I don't know how much it effects the AT&T G2, but has effected older devices going between AT&T and Tmobile.

Google would be your friend in this case, or his actually.
And can't blame them too much, they aren't given all the training that they should be given. They are just sales people, not tech trained most of the time. Every time I go into the AT&T store that I like, I end up talking unlocking & rooting for Android devices since they aren't told anything about that stuff. And I do let them know if they are truly interested to look here for more help.

[Q] Anyone using a t-mobile s5 on at&t?

I've got the AT&T s5 and I love it, but I'd love it MORE if I didn't have to worry about the locked bootloader. I'm tempted to get a Tmobile s5 and root that. Is anyone actually using a Tmobile s5 on AT&T service and if so, how good are the data speeds, is there anything that you can't do with the Tmobile on AT&T, for instance does surfing the web during a phone call work or not, that kind of thing. I very much appreciate any info on this. I know other Tmobile phones are working OK but I need to know obviously about the s5 in particular.
I do know that I will need to get an unlock code for it, no problem there, I do plan to install custom ROMs on it as well.
