I currently own a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and I'm running Cyanogenmod 10.1. I understand that it's easy to develop for Nexus phones because their drivers are open sourced or something along the lines of that. Throughout the year I've owned it, I've had next to no bugs running CM. With that being said, I'm in the market for a new phone and I was thinking about the S4. I know that it hasn't been confirmed whether or not the S4 will get CM but running touchwiz is not an option for me.
Assuming that it does get CM, can it be expected to run as well as a Nexus phone? I've ran CM on other phones like an HTC Incredible 2 and Droid 4, and they were plagued with bugs. I don't know if anyone had any experience with the S3, but I heard CM10 didn't run any better on that than it did on the Galaxy nexus.

Since you are Verizon you would be getting the 9505 with the Snapdragon chip, According to CM founder who recently left Samsung CM should run perfectly well on it:
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/25/founder-cyanogenmod-steve-kondik-leaves-samsung/
Whether we get full support for all the extra sensors in the S4 in CM is a different matter, but only time will tell on that front.
I am also a Galaxy nexus owner upgrading to S4 which hopefully arrives tomorrow.
CM on Galaxy device < CM on Nexus device.
You already answered your own question. Samsung keeps some of the drivers closed, the camera driver for example. If you are absolutely against touchwiz I would wait for the N5, or pick up a N4 on craigslist for cheap.
I came from 2 years on a Nexus S. Adjusting to Touchwiz is interesting, but I am embracing it. AOSP was getting boring. Touchwiz has improved quite a bit even from ICS...

Back when I had Sony, pretty much every time the phone was updated to a new version of Android, the phone got almost all of the features from newer phones. For example, with the JellyBean update, the Xperia S got the new Xperia Z launcher, Walkman, and media apps, and of course the revamped UI aesthetics.
Does Samsung usually do this as well? Or they just update the core OS and leave everything else as it was before?
Samsung maybe will do that but after months of waiting if you can and for few models, when the kitkat update to my GS4 it didn't change the luncher, Samsung is less active than Sony & htc in updating the skin .
I think we may get that update with the 4.4.3 update at July or August and maybe September.
shame on you SamSung
If Samsung bring out a S5 prime version then I think it be a much longer wait for any S5 apps coming over to the S4
Is no one trying to port these features to the GS4 in custom rom?

Dears,
How is everyone doing?
I have been an Android user for many years (Nexus Flagship to be precise), last year I switched to the Galaxy S4 GPE and it was an amazing phone.
After the release of Galaxy S5, I have been waiting patiently for the release of the GPE, but there are no words yet other than the rumors, speculations, Google putting it's image on the store instead of the S4 by mistake. And that's it.
You may be wondering what this topic is about, I need an advise from you guys on:
1- Is there any hope for it to be released, or was the rumors about Google not going through the trouble of releasing it because of the heart rate and finger sensors.
2- If yes, how long do you think we will wait?
3- I HATE samsung TouchWIz and the bloats that comes with it, is there any custom Stock ROM for it yet?
4- Is there a stable Cyanogenmod for the S5 ?
Regards,
Oh, forgot to mention, the reason why I'm not interested in any other GPE devices is that they all together lack one thing I think it's important to have in a smartphone, a (DECENT CAMERA), every device released by Google whether it was a Nexus or something else lacks a good camera. :crying: as a photographer/multimedia user and a blogger, it is a necessary for me.

1 and 2 - read this thread >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2796346
3 and 4 - look in the development forums, if threads for what you want exist, then the answers are yes, else no.
Stick with the S4 or get an iPhone.

Hi,
I'm currently still on the Galaxy S4 i9505, running a ported GPE firmware.
Sadly, Samsung never came through with the Galaxy S5 GPE, so I'll have to make a difficult decision for my next Smartphone.
I was hoping for the new Nexus, but it's just too large for my taste. The Moto X 2014 is a great phone, but the small battery and less than perfect camera are making me a bit reluctant to buy it. Sony Xperia Z3 is a good device, but they have never been the fastest updaters. Also, the Camera on the latest Sony phones is not so great, the sensor might be OK, but Sony kills details with their over-aggressive noise cancelling tech.
So, that leaves me with the "old" Nexus 5 (old processor, small battery and mid-range camera) or one of the Galaxy S5 models.
Now here's my problem: I could get the Galaxy S5 SM-900F, or the S5+ SM-901F. The 901F is the obvious choice, because it comes with the newer Snapdragon 805 SoC. However, I'm not planning on using Touchwiz for more than 5 Minutes, so I need a phone with good CM/ASOP support. I'm a bit scared, that the S5+ will be a "niche" product and won't get many devs. Since Google Play Edition probably won't be happening for the S5 in any of it's shapes, that's my only chance.
Now, what do all of you think?
Do I have a chance with either of the S5 models or should I rather comprmised and go with the Moto X 2014 since that has a clean android interface and will get updated at about the same time as the GPE devices? Might there still be a GPE Galaxy S5? Will Samsung eventually relent and slim down Lollipop and tighten their Update schedule? Rumours point at a 2014 release of Android 5 on the S5 and Note 4, but does that include the new S5+?
Thanks for your ideas!
Get the 901F, I have it for about a month and it's the best phone I have ever used you won't be disappointed
Thanks. I'm not worried about the phone performance, but about dev supporz, from Samsung and from XDA...
Has this been rooted, debloated and/or Cyanogenmodified yet?
Plus is a wasted space tbh. G900F is the way to go in term of develompent. Roms. Programs and so on.

From Samsung, no worry, it will come as for others products.
From devs support here on xda, there's nothing yet:
- root is ok (see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/sm-g901f-to-s5-how-to-root-t2882104)
- custom recovery not properly yet (only one chinese version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55667472&postcount=175)
but it does not support aroma interface
- custom ROM does not exists yet
If you only want custom ROM with S5, choose G900* model but product is not as good as G901F.
If not, best product is G901F but need to wait for Devs.
Best regards
Franky

bear in mind
once you flash cyanogen or anything not touchwiz based. you losed camera functionality. 120fps slow mo and 4k will not be in cyanofgen as the samsung camera app is based on the touchwoiz framework
I can live with losing slow motion and 4k. What I really need is HDR in Google Camera. This is a problem on the S4...do you know how the S5 does here?
I really y hate Samsung for dropping GPE devices, and Google for not making an updated Nexus 5...?

HDR works in google camera. apparently though the quality isnt as good as stock as per usual
well thats what ive heard anyway
personally id rather wait until the camera CM provides can match the stock in terms of modes. or google camera can use extra modes
Never ever ever ever go with Plus-phones from Samsung. They never have as much development as the non-plus versions.

That's what I'm afraid of.
Well, I'll wait a bit longer, tilp the official Lollipop rollout begins, maybe there will be some surprises. After all, there is that picture of the S5 running stock Android on www.android.com which might mean there is a GPE phone coming...

Hi, you are thrue, but 900F will be stopped and replaced by 901F in europe, so devploment would come quick
And snap 805 on 1920 screen geave a beast ! ^^
We already have the first custom rom for 901f with tw or nova launcher and most important fully debloated. Check the android development section.

why do devs never buy plus versions? also why cant they dev for phones they dont own?
The problem is some of us dont have a choice, EE is by far best provider in uk and they no longer supply 900f, much of europs is also exclusivy 901f now.
at&t sprint etc. got own section on site but not 901f.
Hi, I know that S5 G900F(no atm)/M/S that it has released on April 2014 and it is getting Android 6.0.1 TW Official from Samsung, and I am answering me if Galaxy S4 Value Edition I9515 gets Android 6.0.1 TW official from Samsung, because it has released on end May 2014 and it has good specs to run it without a problem. It is more modern than S5 theorically, and if it gets it, it can be port to normal i9505 variant?? Because it has same specs including Snap 600 and Adreno 320.
Thankss for your attention.
Have a nice day.
I doubt Samsung will release Marshmallow TW for any of the S4 models, even if they at capable of running it.
They have a stupid 2 year update warranty policy. What it means is that, for those 2 years, the device will get updates, but once those 2 years are up, no more software updates.
The only thing Samsung will provide now will probably just security updates.

Agreed, am seriously doubting that too.
Not to mention that we're seeing those ads 'upgrade to the Galaxy S6/S7 and get $250 dollars worth of accessories from our online store' on Facebook.
It also seems very stupid that they have not yet fixed the lag on the task switcher which I am sure that the S4 is capable of running smoothly even after 3 lollipop OTA updates.
Samsung unlike most OEMs always have a habit of not fully upgrading the UI of certain apps like the lockscreen, camera app, voice recorder, music or even to add a S6 themer in bid that those extra features will justify an upgrade.
Not being harsh on Samsung as other phone makers have the same 2 year update period unless if it's apple or something, but they could have at least upgraded the UI properly.
So yeah, I'd recommend the OP not to hold his or her breath.
