[Q] Change Kernel on stock (rooted) ROM? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I'm having Bluetooth problems (XDA forum post).
So you don't have to read that whole post to answer this post: basically it seems as if my headset is spontaneously losing part of it's connection or is somehow interfering with the call (call connects but callers can't hear each other).
If you do want more details, the above link has more, but here's my question for this post:
Can I try different kernels on my rooted my Sprint SG4 (Android 4.2.2)?
And would that be a sensible thing to try, given a Bluetooth connectivity problem?
Should I try something else?
Three questions. I have three questions...

ofcourse you can try other kernels. just make sure you download a TOUCHWIZ kernel and not an AOSP one. it may need to be compatable with your baseband..md5..nc6..ng5..whatever...i dunno..ive never used touchtwiz, hacked my phone in the parking lot when i got it lol...check out the kernels forum and it will tell you compatability

Orbit WLAN not working and calls cannot be made or received

Hi Guys,
Please help! I have an XDA Orbit that I have put various different ROMS that I have experimented with. Now I have one that I like I am having a couple of issues.
Firstly, I cant make or receive calls with any SIM card in the phone. It is showing as full reception and does fluctuate as it should but can't make calls. When dialling it just makes 3 beeps after a few seconds and cuts off. Not even emergency calls can be made.
Secondly, although I beleive related to the above, my WIFI does not work. I switch it on and get the hour glass but then nothing happens.
I have re-flashed ROMS to it but to no avail. Even the orginal ROMS but still it does not go away. I will try GPS later today to see if it works and will post results.
I have flashed all radio versions hoping it will solve the problem but hasn't.
Any ideas?
WLAN not working now
Hi Guys,
Answering part of my question myself here but just to let you know the update.
I have managed to fix the calling out and not receiving call issue.
It seems that when I was experimenting with different ROMS on my Orbit I somehow managed to corrupt the IMEI number on the phone. This was causing it to think it was a 'barred' or 'blocked' phone. Therefore not allowing calls.
Quick search on this forum and I found a tool called 'Wizard Service Tool' and changed the IMEI back to orginal and all working fine now except...
WLAN is not working. I suppose the MAC address may have been corrupted also? Anychance I can check this? Or does anyone know how to restore it? I will be searching all day for this so any assistance will be appreciated.
If I manage to fix I will post my results.
You know you can just reflash the radio, you could try the latest version it may help. It is dead easy to find. It will have new wifi, bluetooth, and gsm.
I have tried to flash radio/new rom/hard reset to no avail.
It is a problem with the mac address on the phone. for some reason it gets wiped/corrupted when installing\experimenting with the vanilla roms.
but thanks for the suggestion anyway
any suggestions?
Guys any suggestions????????????

Vodafone v1620 upgreat to win mobile 6

HI,
I have Vodafone v1620 (model ID PH20B2) with german language pack. The device is working fine with windows mobile 2003SE. I want upgreat to windows mobile 6. Please can you tell me, if all componets (WI-FI,GSM,Bluetooth,IR) will work normal on win mobile 6. If yes,can you recommend me appropriate ROM.I found to many and I can't choose the best one.
Thank you in advance.
welcome to the forum!
in general, the rom itself does not necessarily influene the wireless communications, like you asked for, which is why, for instance, in Irda, gprs and gsm there are absolutely no differences.
bluetooth is slightly different as most blueangels with wm2003 have the broadcom bluetooth stack, which is not included in the roms, so setting up your device works differently, but on another os, everything is different, so that's no point.
there is a slight wi-fi bug, that sometimes, when you try and switch it on, it will turn off again, but there is a known workaround (to not activate it in comm manager but in wi-fi manager the first time after a soft reset).
all those points concern all the roms beginning with wm5.
so in conclusion: all communications will work (with minor adjustments), you can pick any rom you like.
next thing is, picking a rom. really nobody can help you there, look at the threads of the roms, read the posts, decide for yourself.
and in the future, please refrain from opening new threads for topics, discussed dozens of times before. use the search feature, read the wiki, read random posts, whatever. the forum is to be kept as clean and slim as possible, which means, you can bump old threads by asking new questions, or simply use the Q&A thread, to be found -=here=-.

Thanks man. I will think about what to do

[i9505G] Galaxy S4: No Call Audio

My Galaxy S4 Google Edition has randomly stopped connecting audio for calls in either direction. I have already tried all solutions I could find on the internet and this forum, including:
Reboot the phone
Check audio settings
Factory reset
Install multiple different stock firmwares
Install multiple modem versions for my phone
Test calling with other apps
Change type of network (GSM/CDMA/Global/etc)
Opening and cooling the phone
New SIM card
New carrier
I have determined that:
The calls work after leaving the battery out or switching batteries for about 2 calls before it quits again.
All speakers are working, but no audio ONLY during cellular calls.
Texting/Data works and calls on this SIM card work in other phones.
Calling DOES always work ONLY when using a bluetooth headset
It appears to NOT be a software issue, but I am not ruling that out.
Would anyone have an idea what piece of hardware could be broken? Any last software suggestions? I will be trying to sell this in a few days if no one knows anything else I can try.
Well the only thing you didn't try is a different simcard.

I just tried it and no difference. By extension, the new SIM was also a new carrier, so it was not related to that either. Thanks for the idea.
Same EXACT Problem
Not that this helps you at all, but I have the same exact problem. I have tried most of the same "solutions" you have tried as well, also to no avail. I have tried countless ROMs, reboots, Odin flashes, etc. What gets me is that once in a while, after installing a ROM or using Odin to go back to stock, I'll get my call audio back for a day or two. Eventually, and without apparent reason, the call audio goes away, and I'm back where I started.
In fact, I was about to write my own XDA post, but then I saw yours, and figured it would suffice.
Good luck. I hope someone has a solution out there because I'm at my wit's end.
Correction: All the same except that my phone is actually a MetroPCS SGH-M919N. Supposedly its the exact same model as the i9505.

Well, good to know it's not only the Google Edition. I believe the other threads I saw were from other models, too. The S4 must just have a cheaply made/defective part.
I've added one last observation to my list. I will probably make a swappa boneyard listing in a few days if anyone is interested.
Hi ,
Not clear if you guys have custom roms or not...
I seen similar problems like that in I9500 models and most of the time the problem was modem related..did you try to flash/ reflash a modem ( new or same) ?

I believe both of us have custom roms (and have tried flashing stock), and we have tried flashing a new modem (old and new). Although, since calling partially works, I will try a few more modems and report back.

[Q] Best ROM threads disallowed - SO HELP!

So this is my situation.
I have just acquired a Defy on Android 2.2.2 and the thing won’t connect to my home WIFI Network. I have read the threads on here and found no solution and I hear people talking about different ROMs helping or hindering the connection problems that are so common with this phone.
I want/need a ROM that will actually connect to my network. If this is impossible then I would like a ROM that has zero bloatware and just the bare minimal essentials so I can customize it from the bottom up. I have privacy issues and I have deleted all stock apps that came with this phone but somewhere along the line I have deleted something to do with sending texts and it still works but it’s a little buggy.
I am not very tech savy at all (hence why I call my phone a “thing”) but I can follow instruction well enough. The problem is I have no idea what the hell people are talking about when they discuss these ROMs so could someone kindly point out a ROM that is stable, fully customizable, privacy orientated or able to offer privacy protection and will allow me to connect to wifi networks?
I will use my phone for these things – Reading pdfs’s, playing footy manager, music and browsing web.
If it can do that in a stable manner I’ll be chuffed to bits.
Thanks.

About "robotic voice issue"

Hey all,
some of us suffer from the robotic voice issue and the discussion in the dev forums gets out of control, so I decided to open an own thread for this topic.
I hope this will reduce the off-topic talk in the ROM threads (which is against xda rules by the way ). Also this will maybe help the devs to find a solution eventually as they dont have to search through the 500pages in the dev forum to find any useful comments on the topic.
Further I would like to share how to live with the problem
For many users this issue is a dealbreaker for using a ROM. I personally adapted to it as those ROMs/builds without the issue are extremely poor when it comes to performance and especially battery life for me. The current version of the device tree massively improves those too aspects at cost of bringing the robotic voice issue, which is good so, as the issue only affects a few and it can be easily worked-around.
What you can do to work-around the issue:
turn network mode to 2G
Go to Settings => Cellular networks => Preferred network type => 2G
Of course this means that your mobile internet will be way slower. All background service will run without any problems. Only when you for example stream music or videos online or maybe want to use the browser (in fact, therefore it wouldnt even really be necessary) you would have to switch to 3G/4G.
I have the robotic voice issue on every outgoing call when on 3G/4G and never had the problem on 2G. So this is a very stable workaround :good:
Also I have found an app called "Toggle Network Type 5.0" PlayStore - xda
It requires root but using a custom ROM that shouldnt be a deal-breaker. With this app, you can create an widget that toggles between network modes that you can select. So for example to toggle between 2G and 3G/4G
That means it is only one tap on a widget from ready to take a call to highspeed mobile internet :fingers-crossed:
use dual-boot
I'mTheMr released a dualboot app for our device G800F xda-thread. I am using it quite a while now and never had any problems with it. The ROMs are installed to internal storage. Having a device with 12gb internal storage this is absolutely no problem. You can access files, photos etc. from all ROMs.
So you have one ROM (works with rooted stock ROM as well!!!) that you can rely on, say your work partition and when you want to use a custom ROM with all its fancy features and the robotic voice issue is atm no deal-breaker you just choose your secondary in the app and reboot =)
I really hope that one of the devs will take a deeper look into that issue sooner or later. I can put up with it, but getting rid of this problem once and for all would of course be way nicer.
What we know about the issue (or think to know :silly: ):
As I said before it is connected to the latest changes in the device tree by hennymcc, which switched the phone libs. Considering that it doesnt appear on 2G, one can assume that it is the part that controls the mobile data / voLTE. That also means that basically every new ROM has the same bug because they all share hennymcc's device tree.
The ROMs that have the robotic voice issue are:
CM 13 (there are builds that dont have it, but I am speaking of the latest build)
Resurrection Remix
Tesla
PAC-ROM 5
ROMs that dont have the robotic voice issue:
Bliss ROM (latest build used the older version of device tree)
CM 12.1
I have this issue with every outgoing call others only calling specific numbers/providers and most of the users dont have the problem at all. So, it could be related to the provider one uses or more precisely the frequencies your provider uses.
And thats about all information I can provide to the topic. Feel free to add things that I forgot to mention or just dont know and when someone wants to have any specific logs just tell what you need and I am sure there will come a lot then I will of course add a call log with and without robotic voice (2g/3g) but probably not today.
PS: Please excuse the noob language used here and there, I am obviously no dev
