Nexus Player Rom on Nexus 4 - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a nexus 4 with a cracked screen which i want to convert to a nexus player. Does anyone know if that will be possible?

Not at all. The Nexus Player does use open source software called "Android TV", However due to hardware constraints, it will be nearly impossible to port it with successful play back. Sorry.

It seems at this point you won't be able to mirror your device without some additional hardware/software combo. Google wants you to start a google hardware family, which isn't out of the question if the price of the Q comes down some and there's some functionality that makes it worth it.
As it is now though everything I have with a screen talks to everything else with a screen but its still a bit haphazard to serve media in any different direction.
Hope this makes sense lol!
Luckily my lg smart tv has dnla so can stream from macbook / nexus over WiFi to tv.

^^ How would you do this?

I only used my nexus 7 for like 2 days because I returned it due to battery problem and I didn't have enough time to check to stream to my smart TV (DNLA). My phone can stream to my smart TV (DNLA). I'm waiting for nexus 7 to be in stock again. In the mean time, how did you get your nexus 7 to stream to your smart TV?

How did you get your phone to stream to your smart TV over dnla? The only way I can see if using the All Share app, but that doesn't mirror the screen, basically I want to push my games on to the big screen if possible...

You can use either of these (available in play store) if your TV supports DLNA connection.
Twonky Mobile or BubbleUPnP

But isn't this the same as using Allshare (on the samsung s2)?
I am mainly looking to mirror the screen so I can play games etc on the big screen.

To do what you are saying requires a Mobile High Definition link ~ aka an MHL connection which in turn goes to the HDMI port on a TV. Earlier cables (Samsung Galaxy S) could connect to a VGA port on a TV.
Unfortunately the Nexus does not come with any MHL capability otherwise we would by now be hearing of an MHL cable that you attach to the power socket (as is done on Samsung devices).
DNLA only links media files, as in Music, Photo's and Video. For that you need dedicated software to stream which has already been mentioned above.
Isn't possible any app to catch on a Google TV device and vice versa kind sling box for androids devices?

Android is lacking here big time, apple has airplay through apple tv to show the screen on the tv and play games etc throught it, all wirelessly.
Android needs this... and fast!
VNC client and server apps exist, so if you want to display your screen on an android enabled TV you should be able to do it with VNC?
Its a WIFI enabled Smart TV I have... can use all share on s2 to share videos and music to it, but cannot mirror your screen, its something they need to resolve soon.
What can I do if my TV doesnt have DNLA, and the N7 doesnt support MHL.
Is there any other way? USB to VGA cable?

It's nothing to do with Android it's ASUS and Google who are lacking.....
You have the S2 and that can link direct to your TV using as you say Allshare and for anything else you would use an MHL adapter as the S2 has MHL built in.
If the Nexus had an Allshare alternative built in and DLNA support you would be able to show media files on your TV..... and again if the Nexus had MHL built in you would then be able to use an MHL adapter and mirror your Nexus screen with your TV.
I'm not talking about the nexus in particular I mean android as a whole needs some kind of solution or they are going to fall behind. Our should I say they'll never catch up on that regard. Can you point me to am mhl adapter to check out out

The only way Android would have it as a whole is if Google demanded all manufacturers ensured the MHL hardware specification be built within their devices and that simply is not going to happen.
MHL is not a prerequisite of Android it's an added extra that runs totally independent. Yes the iDevice has it which makes it sound like Android is lacking but the iDevice is just one manufacturer. Just as Samsung is a manufacturer and yes they have MHL built in their devices, so it would be wrong to compare Apple to Google in this shortcoming.
As to pointing you to an MHL adapter, you can find these easily in either ebay or Google. The trouble is though if you intend to use it with the Nexus 7 you will be wasting you money. As I have already said, the Nexus 7 does not have MHL capability so it would not be able to read an MHL adapter.
nexus 7 is miracast certified, and that's rolling out this fall. patience is a virtue... and/or a software update. -Ara

Sorry to double-post, but while we're on the subject, is it that we lack hardware to get mhl working or we need to program support into the existing setup and we could achieve mhl with a custom ROM. I can mhl off my phone (I think). -Ara

Unlike the lack of USB OTG (On-The-go) which is a simple software limitation (as rooting then using Stickmount allows complete access) MHL is different as it is a hardware limitation. Google obviously left this out (as they did with other ports such as MicroSD) to keep the costs down.

Samsung SmartView, how to get it work in N7?

Is there any trick(or is there customized apk?) to get this app to work in Nexus 7?
If there is ppl who doesn't know what this is, SmartView is app for Samsung tv's and mobile devices,
you can you use your device, with compatible Samsung tv's, as remote and, most importantly, you can
stream your tv's picture to your mobile device's screen ie if go to toilet you don't miss the anything.
I've SGSII and Galaxy S 5.0 WiFI(which came with tv) and of course app works with these, but would
be great if it could be possible to use in N7 too.

Did anyone watch the google event just now? What do you think about their new "Q"?

Did anyone watch the google event just now? What do you think about their new "Q"?
My thouhts;
The positive - great seamless connectivity between all platforms and the price ($35!)
The negative - I kinda like the way to have something "beautiful" (like the Nexus Q was) on top of my receiver in the living room. This whole thing with a hidden tiny HDMI-dongle is just not my cup of tea. I'm also a bit concerned about the sound quality through that tiny thing when streaming Google Music for example. One thing I liked about the Nexus Q was that it really had *great* output audio quality through the HDMI to my receiver.
Another thing I did not like at all is that they still keep bashing us that don't use google play to see our movies. I have most of my movies on my computer in MKV and I want to be able to stream them! This is again where airplay from apple is ahead of google...
What do you guys think?
Btw, is there ANY chance what-so-ever that the new stream button in youtube/google music will have compability with the Nexus Q?
I bought one just because of the price and portability !
I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope the new buttons work with the Q though. I liked having it as a jukebox on my mantle.
the lights are beautiful!

one can hope. or just keep using the old apps.
Nexus Q
Wish it had an option like the banana jacks for speakers like the nexus Q does.
Since they released a chrome cast SDK maybe someone at XDA will be able to implement support for chromecast in the nexus Q?

I am hoping for the same thing.....if there are even Devs left....
Or, since we have the parts we need (HAL drivers etc) to make a chromecast rom?
I hope that the chromecast can get ported over i would hate to just toss my balls away they are very cool looking.

Okay, so now google says they're adding chromecast compability with Google TV - which RUNS ANDROID. Just like the Nexus Q does.
Even more hope!!!

when I get home I'll try the app to see if it'll "map" to the Q. Yesterday it was trying to connect to the bluetooth stereo in my car.
Plan B is putting an amp in where I have my Q now and working via the audio out from the TV

I am using the Sonos AMP where my Q was so I still can connect HTMI on my TV to my speakers. Now adding the Chromecast to the TV I should now have a Q replacement.
My thoughts on the Chromecast compared to the Q:
I just got my 2 chromecasts in today and I wanted to share my experience.
It can do all the basic functionality the Q could and more, but there are a few things the Q did better regarding play music.
With the Q one could start music from one device, then pick up another and "now playing" would be synced. This isn't the case with chromecast. Same thing goes the the queue, It isn't synced either, which is odd because I thought I read that others could join in and add to the queue. I always loved this feature with the Q because I could start music in one room with my phone and later control it with my tablet in another room. Plus, my wife would always like to put her songs in on the playlist as well. I also had issues with connecting a second device and the music would just stop. Perhaps future updates with fix some of these bugs.
If you have any other questions, I'll be glad to answer them!

If your computer has the Intel Wireless Display technology that's designed to mirror your PC onto your tv, perhaps it could be reversible.
That said, I think the Nexus 7 is still waiting for that Miracast streaming feature to be enabled. Perhaps when Google allows that (thanks to Chromecast, I haven't heard word on this for a long while), something could talk between the two devices.
Sorry, these are just guesses, but I have no idea if display mirroring has come to the N7 yet. And if it has, how it could be taken advantage of in Windows.

Why Nexus player

Just wondering, why choose nexus player, not any other android, Chinese etc. players?
it has Google Cast
True HD netflix, vudu, Google Play, hulu, Google cast support and still runs kodi. Those Chinese boxes were great a couple years ago not so much now. I have yet to see one do full HD on any drm app. The Nexus Player will also be updated regularly ( since it is a Nexus device); with the boxes it depends on the manufacturer.
Edit: most of the Chinese boxes will only output 480p on drm apps like previously mentioned.

With the Marshmallow update, you can expand the storage. Be sure to use fast storage.

It's only $50 and works well!! Will work great once they fix the washed out blacks that was caused by the 6.0 update. If you can spend more go with the Nvidia Shield TV!
$50
Made by Asus with decent hardware
Nexus product
Ability to cast
Bluetooth audio
Expandable storage
Runs kodi flawlessly
Gaming
Nice ui
And did I mention it was only $50?
