[Q] Tab 4 10.1 Custom Recovery US Cellular - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Mods, please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong folder. I'm new to the forum and didn't see a folder that seemed more appropriate.
When referring to custom recoveries, is there any difference between the Tab 4 - - 7, 8, or 10.1? I cannot seem to find any recoveries officially supported, my device is never quite on the list. There also seems to be a lack of tutorials out there for the Tab 4. I've come across numerous ones for different iterations of the Tab series (Tab 2 is quite popular, I guess), or the tutorials will refer to a different model of the Tab 4, from a different cell provider.
Can someone point me in a direction on where to find a custom recovery for the Tab 4 from US Cellular (10.1")? Could someone also explain to me if there is or what there is for a difference between the different sizes/models of the Tab 4 that makes a difference in rooting/flashing the device?
And finally, on a side note, what are recommendations for which custom ROM to choose? As I'm sure someone will point out that it will depend on what I want the ROM to do, I'm mostly looking for personal preferences of those more experienced than me.

so..........
So it has been a while and no one has responded at all...

Yes there is a big difference but you might ask one of the ops in the android development that has built a custom recovery if it would work for yours

Thanks

Not really but I do know the 7 inch uses a different processor chip than the 8 and 10 inch. But I am no developer and couldn't tell you if any of the custom recoveries would work for yours. What's your model number?

[Q] is there a list of ROM capabilities?

I've rooted and unlocked my N10 and loaded TWRP (or whatever it's called). So, I now have the ability to flash Roms (I've done it for ages on my Touchpad so the concept isn't new to me).
But is there a list of the different ROMs available and what each one brings to the table (over and above the standard one)?
regards
Alan

Always check out the sticky threads of any forum you join, my old nan used to tell me. How right she was
Btw it lists all roms/kernels available, for the list of features you will have to visit the thread of the rom. Personally, I would advice you to flash Vanilla Rootbox or PACrom.
Sent from my GT-N7100 or the Nexus 10, heaven knows.
Those who help noobs go to heaven. True story.
Is there any particular reason why u wanna flash a new rom?

It all depends on what you want from a rom. Some offer tablet ui and some don't. Others offer otg support while others have yet to.
If you can list some necessities I'm sure many users can input which is most suitable.
I've personally switched from PA ROM/KTmanta to Kaos/Franco. R11.

OK I need:
Tablet support
Smooth scrolling (check out Firefox in the standard ROM for how NOT to do it)
Bug-less wifi (standard ROM is not that good)
Anything else is just a bonus

[Q] ELI5: What are the challenges of building/porting an AOSP ROM on T23x?

Hey all, new Tab 4 7.0 owner here. I've only ever owned HTC EVO devices, which have a wide selection of custom everything to choose from, so empty Android/Original Development sections are a new concept for me.
From what I read, development hasn't started because we don't have a stable recovery environment yet, but assuming we get that down, what would be the main hinderances (device-specifc issues) of getting AOSP on this tablet? What can we non-developers do to help?
Thanks for all your answers!

As far as I know, we have a bit of lack of support fro Devs. We do have great Devs however some (if not most) of them don't actually own the device so they are trying to work from other devices including the Tab 3 series. Another thing is lack of tools and information from Samsung. Even though they do provide Devs with tools and info, they are a bit secretive when it comes to development of the actual OS. So that's that. What you can do is to offer to test new methods but you must accept the risks which involves Hard Bricking of the the tab. Other than that just be patient and privide any information you can give

As a contributor that works with the Tab 3 7in version, I can tell you that the Marvel cpu/board set that Samsung used on our (and your) 7in wifi versions is the main problem.
We have managed to get a version of CM 11 working, but some essentials such as wifi, bluetooth, and hardware composer are not easy with Marvel. We still have a lot of work to do and very little time to spend trying.
And the previous answer is also correct, you need more devs for the Tab 4.

Danger!! **{developer edition only}**

That header should be put at the top of every post that talks about the "DEVELOPER EDITION" otherwise some sad owner of the Note 4 is going to brick their phone.

How are they going to brick their phone? With the locked bootloader and no root, there is no recovery to flash anything.
Trying to flash any sort CF Root or custom recovery will indeed brick a Note 4 CE
Also people running out and buying the DE not knowing that the device also only has a 30 day warranty..

KennyG123 I appreciate what you are saying but I need to disagree with the notion that there is not a need to provide a distinction between threads that focus on mods for the retail versions of the Note 4 and those that focus on the Developer Edition of the Note 4. As you know, the Retail version and the Developer Edition of the Note 4 are identical except for one very important element...the bootloader. Mods/hacks etc. designed for one can be very detrimental to the other. They are not compatible in this respect.
I'm sure with your experience and expertise that you have seen many, perhaps hundreds, of inexperienced users, excited about taking advantage of their new Android phone and its potential for modding, do something that bricks their phone because they simply didn't know better. Distinguishing threads intended for Developer Edition phones is not intended to benefit the knowledgeable "crack flasher", developer, coder or themer, it is intended to help the "noob" or less experience user from doing something that will brick their phone or lock their bootloader.
With recovery and root now available for the Developer Edition Note 4 ROMs are not far behind. And, hopefully root and SafeStrap will be available for the retail version soon. With that/those events, the ability for new/inexperienced users (both retail owners and developer edition owners) to separate what's safe to flash and what isn't is going to get very complicated. This is only going to be compounded as OTAs begin to be released and different version of firmware start to show up for users to flash. Having a way to separate or distinguish threads intended for Retail users only or Developer Edition users only makes sense to me. Just saying. No rant intended. Thank you for listening.
Only $129? Wow, what a deal. I'll take 2.

Personally I'd rather see a separate forum for all the Developer specific stuff. Drop it all there so there is no confusion... but that's just me.

The only threads that need warnings are those for root and those for recovery. There has been no issue with the S4, S5 or Note 3 sections. Again without recovery nothing will flash and no harm can come to the phones. They are exactly the same devices, just bootloader unlocked. People desperate to root will try anything in spite of the warnings. As far as I have seen on previous devices attempts to install recovery will fail and worse that happened was they had to Odin in Stock tar. As I said, unlocked developers editions are not new. They have been in use for Sammy Verizon for almost 2 years with no need for a separate section. If anything the locked edition should be confined to General and Q&A. With so many variants of the same device people will always use the wrong thing. No amount of warnings has ever stopped that. Read through the Sprint S3 sections and find all the bricks caused by flashing international ROMs. Both sections have warnings posted clearly. So we really don't need "the sky is falling" kind of thing here. We just need people to read. The information is there.

Thanks KennyG123 for your response. I totally concur, reading and researching what you have and what you want to do is the first step for any user. I came to the Note 4 from the DE5 and thankfully when ROMs started to appear the developer or OPs did specify whether the ROM was for retail or DE users. I hope this will be true for the Note 4.

Unfortunately this lock down of Verizon and AT&T devices has killed development since the S4. This is the other thing to think about... If someone does crack the bootloader or finds a root and SafeStrap like method, suddenly all the DE ROMs will be usable by all.

I don't post much here as I usually find my answers with a little searching, but I'm a daily lurker and have been since the days of OG droid. I strongly disagree with your statement. There has indeed been plenty of confusion in the Note 3 threads. Also a good little bit of drama and some anger over poorly marked threads. Yes, the threads should be more clearly marked "Developer Edition" by the OP, but it doesn't always happen. In the end, I think it just makes more work for you to moderate but that's your choice.

Well, you'd think so, but (in the case of the S5 anyway) the number of ROMs available for the retail version out number the number available for the developer edition. You'd think that it would be the other way around. Most developers aren't releasing two versions, one for retail (SafeStrap) and one for DEs. As of last week anyway. Either way, development for the S5, either model, is pretty slim. And, the unified ROMs (AOSP) just don't seem to be ready for prime time. There is always something that just doesn't work right or not at all.
But I have faith. I hope the Note 4 will be blessed with a multitude of ROMs to accommodate a wide range of user wishes and desires...besides it's getting close to Christmas, gotta have faith, right?

That is because so few of the DE's were sold.
Adding more forums only adds to the risk of someone flashing the wrong thing. Better they see threads like this than assuming all Verizon variants are the same. There are many other variants that have no forums, US Cellular, Metro, Boost, some Chinese knock off... It is ludicrous to make a separate section for every one. Developers have usually been good about properly marking their work.
If people don't read the documentation then the only person at fault is themselves.

[Q] Porting ROMS from from the 10in to 8in model Tab 4?

Ok, so if the Tab 4 family has all the same hardware sans screen size, is it possible to port from one size to another?
I don't think anyone has been able to do it successfully. Personally, I'd love to see the CyanogenMod 12 ported over to the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 model.

i talked to @sub77 to see if he could make a unified kernel that allows the custom roms to boot on the other size tabs. If he does it will allow us to start using the 10 inch tabs roms on the 8 inch ones too. Hoping he does it because noone else seems like they care if we can or not. Im still hopeful

cannyou suggest a good note 3 A7 or higher variant, solid. n900s

I forgot the words "custom rom" in the title sorry.
Is there a favored Android 7 custom rom for the n900s Q Adreno 330? (id say A8 but I doubt its too snappy.if even possible yet. But if so... please do.)
I currently have darklord v1 on here with 6.01. I know where are a few upgrades but is there a nice solid one with 7.0 and the A7 goodies-du-jour?
Suggestions? I you could please not skip whats obvious to you because it is yet to be obvious to me
btw, any benefit to changing my phone to internation from Korean? what? and how?
slightly offtopic: my note 4 went swimming withvout permission. its starts but doesnt charge the battery. and never kicks in after a bright pinkish screen Hopeless or screen and battery maybe? I live where I can get it fixed cheaply but dubious it is even worth the parts.
thanks very much.

Yeah, those don't help with the question I asked about recommending a custom rom. But thanks for taking time to try to help; I will go through more of the Korean thread.
Search, which I of course tried first, brings up a meandering series of different ideas, which is why people end up posting for those in the know to hopefully reply and sum history up.
(Is this not the correct forum to ask? It seems to be from the various descriptions.)
Thanks. I appreciate any advice.
I was pointing out as there are very few to no roms for that model you need to look at the development threads .
