I'm going to the UK at the end of the week and I want to buy a SIM for my Canadian Note 4 (N910W8). If I buy a SIM with O2, should I get the 3G or the 4G version? I am not sure if the 4G will work on this phone or not.
Alternatively, if any UK members can recommend something other than O2, I'm all ears. (I don't care that much about minutes, but SMS would be nice, data the priority).
Thanks.
Hi,
EE or Vodafone look like your best shot at using 4G here in the UK. Details of the bands the different operators use can be found here:
http://www.4g.co.uk/4g-networks/
I got the phone band specs from here:

If you're only here for a short period of time, you might want to try GiffGaff (https://giffgaff.com/). They use the O2 infrastructure, but have better packages for short term use (they call them 'goodybags'). Not sure if they've got 4G available as yet, but 3G is generally quite good from what recent users have told me.

Hi guys,
I received word late yesterday from my contacts that Telstra will be supplying the HD2 exclusively for at least 2-3 months on the NextG network.
No word on pricing yet but I have got a loose release date! For us Aussies the wait isn't too great which is a bit of a surprise for me, I thought we'd wind up being last! So without further ado:
Just wanted to let you know we finally have an idea on the Touch HD2;
Touch HD 2 – Due for release mid - late January. Exclusive to Telstra for 2 - 3 months. Launching with Windows Mobile 6.5

My name is already down for one, I can't wait!
I guess anyone not on Telstra can just use an imported one... Blue Fly Mobile are selling them for $900 at the moment.
Do you know if the "official" Australian version will have anything special that a UK one, for example, doesn't have?

A NextG compatible version is what I am after so I am holding out for it.
Basically Telstra bloatware will be the only special thing on it haha. Which I'll remove with cooking my own ROM. And of course NextG compatibility.
Hopefully the main difference will be that it will have the 850 3G band, like the Touch HD did, which will make it useable on most of AT&T's 3G network in the US.

Yea, a sweet US 3G radio.
it seems a telstra rom already leaked (841 is telstra rom code)
ftp://rom:[email protected]/Leo_HD2/Official/Leo_1.49.841.1_21869_WWE_OS.NB.rar
btw, what does it mean that the phone is only exclusive for 2-3 months? So for those 2-3mos, you can only get it through telstra (no e-retailers)? Can you get it sim-free during this time or after that time?

it simply means that in Australia, the Australian mobile phone networks like Vodaphone, Telstra, Optus, T-mobile,etc will have to wait a few months before they can have the option of selling it on their networks.
you can still get the device anywhere else in the world unlocked and as long as the device has the right network frequencies for your SIM card then you'll be fine. there are slightly different HD2's made for the world markets, because not all countries use the same network frequencies (USA being the odd-man-out of the world)
i bought my HD2 from the UK (Handtech) delivered for Au $840. the frequencies are a match for my 3mobile SIM card and the device is "unlocked" so i don't have any bull**** about vendor locking and software bloat.
Telstra/AT&T
Please post here when it is available through on online retailer with the 850Mhz Band so that US buyers on AT&T can rejoice and spend some dough...
Thanks
Am I reading this correct that the HD2 will not work on NextG? Is there a fix for this?
tchoklat
I highly doubt a Telstra released 3G mobile wouldn't work on their NextG network, kinda defeats the point.

Because the HD2 runs on UMTS 900/2100MHz. You have to wait for HTC to release another model that's NextG compatible (runs 850/2100MHz UMTS) in early 2010.
damn, what do I do with my new phone then?

use it as a $800 coaster.
or sell it.
I'm using the HD2 imported from overseas 2 weeks ago through one of those dodgy Australian online retailers (electronicbazaar.com.au) and I'm happily using my nextG simcard without problems.
The phone was shipped from HK.
I have no problems browsing or coverage but technically I shouldn't be getting access to the network.
I guess the question remains as to whether I'm accessing the nextG network or not. The carrier name is "3G 3Telstra" on the dialer and I get the "H" symbol come up on the phone. That looks good enough for me.
This information, plus p3ngwin's use of the phone on 3Mobile suggests it's not accurate to say that we can't use an unbranded Leo in Australia...
@tchoklat - have you tried using the phone yet with your NextG SIM?
Yes it fails to log on and I only see the odd 'G' or 'E' come up suggesting sporadic connection to the 3G network, not NextG. I understand that the 'H' means HSPDA or NextG

In a way you have access to Telstra 3G but not NextG. Read this http://www.austech.info/137073-post16.html
Telstra 3G = UMTS 2100 which provides 60% population coverage
Telstra NextG = UMTS 850 which provides 99% population coverage
I have a NextG sim when I was using my TP2 (the sim is my Leo now) and on my Leo I only get the EDGE network and no NextG.
Just what I have found as we have no or limited Edge where I live so the phone is basically useless. I have listed it on Ebay for anyone interested.
Ebay item number 110471705953
thanks all.

I'll tell you what, I have the unlocked import of the HD2 in the USA on at&t and the edge data on this phone seems as good as my last 3g phone. I think the speed of the phone is making up for it. Now of coarse, WITH the 3G coverage is another story but the edge is acceptable to me on this device.

I have to agree with you there. I reckons it's good enough.
Hey Guys,
I am thinking of buying a Galaxy Tab, but I am unsure of which carrier I want to go with.
I am from the UK, but living in the US. I do go back to the UK occasionally, so want something that works there - this would mean I would either need the T_Mobile or the AT&T versions.
However, I believe that AT&T and T-Mobile use different frequencies for their 3G signal here in the US, with AT&T being the only one that is the same as the UK/EU.
I was wanting to to with the T-Mobile version as I read somewhere that their speeds would be faster, but if 3G is not going to work in the UK, i'll pass on it. T-Mobile also had a subsidised version which is also an incentive.
So, do any of you guys know if the hardware radio has this frequency limitation or is it something to do with the software? I ask this because my AT&T blackberry was able to connect to T-Mobiles 3G network while I was over in the US last time so it is possible to havea radio that can connect to both.... Perhaps they did not do this though for cost savings....
Why don't u buy a Euro tab. There was a post stating he could use the Euro tab with both voice & data with AT&T sim. No hacking was needed

I couldn't guarantee you that a TMo US Tab would work on UK 3G, but what I can say is that my TMo US G1 worked fine.

so after doing exhaustive research on the subject I was not able to find a definitive thread or answer on the subject of using international sim cards on an unlocked g2. I'm hoping someone here at xda has experience with this and is able to give me advice.
I'm going to be backpacking europe for 5 weeks and want to bring my g2 to use as a computer (while connected to wifi) and making rare calls (just to check in with people at home), htc's website says this phone is quad band and umts http://www.htc.com/us/products/t-mobile-g2#tech-specs but I've never traveled so I'm not sure what to make of it.
any help would be very appreciated!!
edit: called tmobile and they were no help at all, the rep was reading off a script that didnt have much info. looking for personal experience please!
Hi,
G2/Desire Z as you rightly point out will be able to deal with mobile networks in Europe.
The problem you face is that a Sim from county 1 will work Ok in that country but will attract data roaming charges in all other european countries.
That's unless you negotiate something with the operator prior to your purchase regarding both mobile data and call roaming charges.
Chances are you will get a better deal from maybe Germany or perhaps france. Check them both on the web and also check the uk operators and see where you get..
Des. . .
Essential: WHEN will you be going? Because TMO Germany is about to bring up an Europe-wide (or at least Western Europe) roaming-charges-free card. I'll look it up and answer asap. Hold on.
EDIT: TMO Travel & Surf does not include (or not even feature? Not clear from the Article I read) calls. Sorry. PLUS the Prices seem not really good to me. I haven't found anything you're looking for in Germany yet. Could do with it as well. Greez, mwrsa
I will be travelling march-april. I guess what my question is, once they send me my unlock code and I unlock my phone to use the international sim, I will not be tied at all to tmobile or their roaming charges unless I put my original sim card back in the phone is that correct?
does anyone have any recommendations what carriers are the best? I'll be going to UK, France, Netherlands, Germany, Czech, and Spain
well I can't speak for europe I'm currently out of my home country with my DZ, I unlocked it with gfree, which I would reccomend. also its definetly cheaper to use a local simcard from where every you are travelling, there's no getting around roaming charges and insane rates if your going international. I personally picked up a free ATT card here where I am and paid 20 bucks for 100mb of data, since calling and texting is still expensive I communicate through "whatsapp" with my wife and family . it worrks on data or wifi, let's u send and receive pics and videos and uses a surprisingly tiny amount of data to do so. id honestly reccomend this route so long as your family has a whatsapp compatible device, currently its available for blackberry, droid, and iphone.
sorry I can't be more help but with "real life" experience I found this to be the best route. if u need voice, its still cheaper to pickup a 20dollar long distance calling card and use the hotel phones. or skype app when your on wifi.
hope it helps a bit! and have a safe trip!

Problem is, that at least with German SIM-Cards, you need an adress here in germany ti register the card to your name. Austria and GB have "3" as a network operator. AFAIK they have a sim-card with no roaming fees where "3" is available as a network.
Hi,
I'll be going through europe this summer. The suggestion of getting a local PAYG sim is good, on the face of it. Unless you are going to be in that country for just a few days (as I will be) then, perhaps, it is more aggravation to get the sims than pay roaming.
A sim from Germany - if it was to include some country roaming - from either O2 or T-Mobile or even Voda - may be an answer.
Very much depends on how long you will be in each country I guess.
A week+ stay in each country, and a sim from each country when you get there could week prove to be your way forward.

HI,
This is worth a read. Gives you some idea as to prices and amounts:
Roaming Data Charges - UK Accounts...

As far as band compatibility, the important thing is that your phone is compatible with the bands used in Europe. Looks like Europe uses the 900 and 1800 MHz GSM bands just about everywhere for voice, and UMTS 2100 for 3G. The G2 has GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900; and UMTS 1700/2100, 2100. So you're good to go as far as the hardware compatibility.
International sim card
Hello!
Have you ever heard about international sim cards? In my opinion is the best solution to save on roaming charges!
Personally I use WorldSIm, they have both a UK and US number in the same sim card and have free incoming calls in over 90 countries.
There are more like this in the market but I can only speak about what I already now and I'm very happy with.
Hope it helps!
as O2 are going to be running a 4G trial in the UK - has anyone heard/do you think that the Xoom 3G may get an update like the US does for 4G networks?
Interesting. I didn't know that O2 were doing that!
I don't think, however, that Moto would plan anything based on a trial of 4G from one UK network. That's not to say that it wouldn't be possible to upgrade it in future, I just don't think it'll happen very soon.
Been looking around for some info on the UK version of the XOOM and was hoping someone would be able to help out.
1. Is the 3G version of the XOOM going to be locked, like the US one, or would I be able to import it to Sweden and use it with any of our 3G providers?
2. When is it being released?
3. Is there any stores/webstores in the UK that delivers/ships outside of the UK?

I'm also thinking of buying a Xoom 3G version from UK.
1. You can buy a sim free Xoom from the US also, but it won't work in our 3G (UMTS) networks, because they have the CDMA version in US. The European version should work just fine if you buy it sim free.
2. I have read it should ship on 9 April.
3. I have not found one. As far as i know, there is only one shop that will be selling the 3G version sim free and it only offers shipping to UK (but that's not a problem for me, as i have a friend there).
o2 Tweeted it last night:

The test was completed in november 2009; it would be strange to run a test for a new spectrum when the bidding is already completed

I think in this instance a test and a trial are two separate things. O2 already successfuly tested a connection but are now going to run a trial, which will probably involve real punters getting involved.
I'm in the US and would like to know where to buy the 64GB version. My google search only revealed some off-shore sites that I have never heard off and want to make sure that members here can vouch for the sources they got their phone from.

Try this: http://www.grossoshop.net/huawei-ho...-4g-lte-3-64gb-gold-shipping-from-europe.html
It's shipped from Italy and it has 24 month EU warranty. Shipping cost is to pay separately though but it's not a big deal.
You can get it cheaper but with China warranty and service in China is really something. I'll never try it again.
First make sure the networks will function in US.
I bought chinese version PLK-TL01H on oppomart(Phone was delivered within 3 days by DHL). LTE is NOT working on AT&T, however HSPA+ is working and it is kinda sufficient for me.

Since s7yler has published this excellent site link: http://www.willmyphonework.net/, finding phone connection possibility is no big deal anymore. If you're from the USA, you'll have 2G and 3G in any network but those from CDMA side (like Verizon) and you'll have 4G on Sprint (at least in cities) and providers using its network (like Defense). And you can always buy additional data pay as you go sim as you have two sim slots.

Thanks guys. I am on Cricket mobile which essentially is ATT. Their data is limited to I believe 8mbits/s anyway so LTE even if it doesn't work is not that big of a deal. I have checked that all other bands 3G (HSPA+) and 2G work. I am no stranger to non US phones if you check my sig, so making sure I have supported bands is usually my first filter to decide if a phone makes my list.
I'll check out the sites you all provided.
Be very careful, Oppomart stole me almost 400eur on refound (sent me a used mobile of another old model and i sent back), they just wait PayPal time expire, don’t let time expire even they implore. Do not trust Oppomart.
I buy from aliexpress and pandawill, it never happen something like this.
