I have an unlocked SGH - I337UCUAMDL running on 4.2.2. I tried updating it OTA but it failed. I am assuming it was because it is unlocked.
Is there an alternate version of this that I can download and flash through Odin?

If you have mdl why do you want to upgrade the firmware? You currently can use twrp and flash roms based on 4.4.2. If you upgrade with Odin or ota you'll lose that ability for ever.

In that case, look in the general forum for the nb1 Odin flashable tar file and flash that in Odin. You can then ota up from there.

1. Rootable is just that, you'll be able to root it using towelroot. The normal nb1 is not rootable. The nc1 firmware is rootable with towel root too. So you could flash the non-rootable, then ota to nc1 and root it
2. If you're sim unlocked flash with Odin will not lock it.

Thank you for the reply.
I've searched the general forum, but I'm having trouble sifting through all the information.
Have you ever updated your firmware for a rooted phone?
I understand how to use Odin, but I need a tutorial.
I'll look again.
?...
I'm still not sure what to do, I really want to experience the most out of my rooted phone.
I'd like the newest advancements...
How bout this question, anyone reading this have my phone type and what did you do with your phone?

Wow, thanks so much!
I am trying to unroot my AT&T Galaxy S4 back to stock so I can apply the OTA updates. Currently I am rooted and running MF3 and cannot apply any of the OTA updates, fails at 25%
So if I want to unroot do I Odin the MF3 tar files or would it be better to Odin back to the MDL version? Then I should be able to apply the updates?
Why don't you just Odin the nb1 tar files and forget the ota?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I thought about doing that but was not sure if it was possible since since I was rooted. Was afraid of bricking the phone. So if I Odin NB1, how do I unroot the phone? Do I need to do anything before flashing that tar file?

Just flash in Odin. It'll put the new firmware on and remove root. You don't have to unroot first

Thanks that worked!! I have the NB1 on the phone now.
Is there any easy way to tell without being able to boot fully? There isn't anything immediately obvious on google. I'm trying to help out a friend, his phone doesn't get past the boot animation anymore and he doesn't know which version he has. I can boot into download/recovery modes but don't see anything that screams MF3, MK2 or any of the others.
Updates: I can get to sideload but don't know if I can install any Roms through sideload without a custom recovery. The recovery right now is stock 3e I think.

Can't do anything from there. If recovery doesn't say NB1 in the corner then it's something before that. Only other way is to just try and flash only part of each one through Odin.

He was rooted at one point and then unrooted. Never any custom roms/recoveries. The phone was working after he unrooted it but for some reason will no longer pass the boot animation.
He was on android 4.3 so does that only correspond to MK2? As far as I can tell it does.

Do you know if he took any ota updates? My opinion is you should just flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. It's doesn't sound like he is still on mdl firmware.Which would be the only reason he'd not want to go to nb1

If he's not on mdl you're not going to get cm or any aosp rom. Nb1 is no more restrictive than mf3, or mk2. In any case you'll have to use safestrap and only touch wiz based roms.

I saw a thread on how to unroot s4 on 4.4.4, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm using safestrap as well. Any help would be great

Thats the thread I was looking for: ) Thanks
I have acquired an S4 i337 from At&t, it's on the MF3 4.2.2, i have used towel root to root it and installed safestrap as well...
i wanted to upgrade to 4.4, should i just odin the firmware onto it by putting it into download mode? which 4.4 is best for it in terms of stability and stuff...? i think only stock touchwiz is recommended since i don't know whether it's bootloader is locked or not...
second
can i root the 4.4 through towel root easily or is there a problem with it... which in your opinion is the best for the i337? I won't be able to downgrade again yeah?
I would flash the nb1 tar file in Odin and then go from there. You can root everything including oc3. Read through this and you'll find ask your answers, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758227

thank you for replying, that's very helpful. Also if i may, i need to flash 4.3 before 4.4 or just go directly towards 4.4?
since it says from any base... ?
it's just downloading the firmware (NB1) then putting the phone into download mode, start Odin and wait for the phone to reboot? that's it?

Yes it's as simple as that. Put the tar in PDA or AP slot depending on what version of Odin you're using. Only have f.reset and auto reboot checked.

Yes you can with Odin, but do your know the bootloader version of 4.2.2 you're on? If you're on mdb or mdl you probably don't want to update. On 4.2.2 you can use twrp or cwm custom recoveries and flash any roms your want. Once you're on 4.4.4 you'll be limited.

Go into setting, about device. Look at the last three characters build number. That's a good indication of what your bootloader is. If your rooted the best way is in a terminal emulator type
su
getprop ro.bootloader
