Hi guy, just uploaded a quick video showing OTG usb drive and 1TB hard drive straight out of the boix with a file manager from the play store.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is27WwcOxmE&list=UUOh5vz-UToJa6l38XnVib9g
All working really smooth and quick.
Regards Paul.
Thanks for sharing. Its good to see its easy too add more storage if needed, especially if I'm travelling.

Great video! OT question....is that screen bleed on the right side (camera edge)? Can't tell if that's the video or not but I'm curious as I have bleeding there which makes the status bar have a gradient a tint everything on the edge to white...
Sent from my LG-D851
Have you tried writing/copying any files from the tablet to the USB drive?
OP,
link to the 4 port hub you used in this video please?
I have minimum light bleed around the edges. The light spot on the video is on the wallpaper. Sad fact on IPS panels its far more noticeable on black backgrounds than on amoled as the black's are illuminated unlike amoled where the native black of the screen is used. I am so glad that the nexus 6 uses amoled. I really am not a fan of the washed out colours on the Nexus 9 panel.
To be honest the 4 port hub was purchased from a local chinese shop for a couple of euros. You can find similar itens on Amazon. Same with the OTG very cheap on amazon.

Yes transfer work fine both ways large video file transfer from the nexus 9 to either USB stick or Hard drive and from drives to the Nexus 9 no problem
thank you for testing this. awesome.
When I tried plugging in my OTG cable which already had a usb stick in it, the Nexus 9 did not show anything connected. At first I thought there was something wrong with the OTG cable but I tested it out on my N5 and a Samsung Tab S tablet and they recognized it.
Do you think the Nexus 9 is faulty then since 2 other devices recognized the OTG cable?
No, it's not faulty your N9, unfortunately this is by design, OTG is not fully integrated but only using third party apps like ES File Explorer...

Ok, I used ES file explorer and there was an icon for USB. I clicked on it but it indicated that the usb stick was empty. I know that this is not true since it contains a lot of movies and I had just used it on my other tablets to watch a movie.
Any ideas on why the N9 doesn't see the movie files on the usb stick while my other tablets do?

Haven't noticed this problem on mine. Make sure the USB stick is formatted as FAT32 or else the tablet may not see any files.

I'll have to take a look at the usb stick to see what it was formatted to. However, I find it strange that my Nexus 5 and my Samsung Galaxy Tab S are able to see the files on the usb stick but the Nexus 9 can't??? Doesn't sound right at all.
Your N5 and Tab S are stock or mod ?
Maybe your usb is ntfs formatted and they have kernel with NTFS support that N9 doesn't has.

The Tab S is completely stock (got it 2 weeks ago). The N5 is rooted + unlocked bootloader on stock rom.
I have a USB otg formatted to NTFS and have no problems seeing it and my files.

The point is you can use USB devices designed to work with Android or for which Android has included drivers. My Nikon DSLRs (D700/0) works fine, my USB stick works fine (Corsair 16GB Flash Voyager), my spycam is built right into the device, in fact there are two of them, and my phone (Touch Pro 2 WiMo 6.5) takes a charge of the USB port just like I would expect it to.
For giggles I plugged in a no name USB mouse and a Transcend 10 in 1 card reader and both just worked right off the bat. That's really all the portable USB devices I have hand or I would have tried more for you.
If you want to use your iPod with the tablet just call Apple up and ask them when they are adding Android support. Same with the Canon camera and anything else that not working really. Best bet though is to just check the forums and see what other people are able to use, lots of threads on the subject and might save you some time.
I would check to make sure you're running the latest firmware available. I'm running the latest US OTA, based on Android 3.1. Nearly everything I've plugged into my USB ports has worked. So far, all of my FAT32 flash drives work, as well as both of my NTFS external hard drives, and a couple of game controllers. Keyboards and mice work as well.
If you're not getting any results from FAT32 or NTFS drives, then you have a problem.
I have my external HITACHI HDD on NTFS working fine but when I've tried to connect my Nexus S in as a drive its just blink on Transformer task bar and thats all
I would love to see my NS connected to Transformer so I can do more work on it.
Any1 know how to make it work ?

Also, are you guys sure about ntfs and stock? The manual has a copyright for Tuxera, and they are known for the ntfs module.

Linux support doesn't imply that everything Linux will support a certain feature. Considering that compared to ntfs it's a minor feature, I found it amazing

You are correct - external NTFS HDDs do work on stock TF's when connected via the dock. I think some people are confused, because the TF would not read an NTFS microSD inserted directly into the tablet, but I suspect this is more to do with the way it is mounted (i.e. it is explicitly attempting to mount the microSD as FAT32).

To those of you who managed to get NTFS formatted drives (flash drives or otherwise), I presume you are not on the stock rom?
i just plugged in my HTC Touch Pro 2 (Tilt2/Rhodium) and it is charging, but it does not mount the SD card.
USB thumbdrives have all worked for me.

I think the last Nexus devices were able to host USB drives such as usb sticks etc., so do you think that it will be possible with this one?
16gb would be more than enough for me if I only use it for rom, apps, pictures and music but 720p movies won't have enough place (maybe just 1 or 2).
Is USB host mode maybe available for nearly every device (maybe only after another kernel)?
And I read somewhere that it is possible to host usb drives with "Nexus Media Importer", but it is also possible to access them via ES File Explorer for example or maybe even with Play Movies / Play Music?
At the moment I use HTC Desire (smaller movies at ~1gbyte), slowly it's time for an upgrade and this would be a must-have for me otherwise I won't buy it atm...
Maybe with USB OTG I could buy only 8gb, that would be really nice because 50€ (65USD) for 8gb is really expensive :/
Thanks for (hopefully incoming) answers
+1
Planned to ask the same, but you opened a topic already
Also with this if anyone knows. Can you access a OTG source from a recovery like CWM or TWRP? That would make the 16GB meaningless.
Yes the Nexus 4 supports usb OTG (and you probably won't need a custom kernel for this)
Yes you can use ESFile explorer and run everything from your hard drive
I think latest TWRP offer OTG support but I'll probably never use it since you may "brick" your phone if the flash fail and not sure if otg is perfectly stable...

Is the USB drive automatically mounted?
And is the media on it displayed in medi player apps like Music or MX Player or do I have to click on each single file with ES file explorer to play it?

Where have you got this information?? I can say out the box OTG is not working. Anyone have any ideas yet?
Would it be possible to have a Nexus 4 case with a microSD slot that connected via USB OTG?
For me an attached normal USB Flash Drive (8GB) did not work. Even the light of the flash drive did not a single blink.
I am not sure if the Nexus 4 provides Voltage for usb devices.
Just to confirm, the Nexus 4 does not support USB OTG out of the box. Just tested it myself - works fine on the missus' Galaxy S2, but not on my Nexus 4.
I'm fairly certain that you still need to be rooted for it to work properly, as with the Nexus 7.

Hey guys,
I have a 16gb Nexus 10, a 128gb SanDisk USB flash drive, a micoUSB to female USB OTG converter, using StickMount. Running Task650's latest AOKP release.
I had placed two mkv bluray rips on the USB flash drive and with the converter and StickMount, I was able to play both movies using BSPlayer. No lags. No frame rate drops. It was a thing of beauty. Before I got it to work, I had to NTFS format the flash drive.
Anyways, today I added a few avi movies and a bunch of comic books, figured it was going to work the same. Now I'm not even able to play the movies that played. The USB flash folder shows empty when I'd browse to it using Root Explorer.
Superuser permission looks good. I've tried rebooting, clearing cache, combinations of folders and different file types.
I was wondering if anyone uses StickMount or does what I'm trying to do and can recommend a possible fix? Or a different method?
Thanks dudes!

I used my OTG today with a NTFS flash drive to copy some files over (4+ GB) aaaannd it crashed the first time (used CM's file manager), hard reboot, reinserted the flash drive, used ES this time, worked flawlessly. No extra app for mounting here.
What about issuing the mount command yourself on the terminal?
look at kmsg (kernel output) right after you connect your device, it will give you the vold location of the device/partition and then issue the mount command to mount the ntfs partition to some folder you created before.
Also, the usb disk, it has its own power source, right? just checking.
Have you tried another filesystem i.e. ext4?

Hi! This is very strange to me. I've been using stickmount+otg+usb disk for a few months now on rooted Nexus 7 and form recently on XT925 aswell.
Never had any problem. My usb drives are Kingston DataTraveler 64GB Elite 3.0 NTFS and two cheap 4GB noname FAT32.
Tried now your scenario with comics and videos and still works fine.

Hey! Finally got around to testing everything out this weekend.
So..
The Nexus 10 running Task650's AOKP: StickMount only worked once and never again. OTG Helper didn't work at all.
The Nexus 10 running ParanoidAndroid: StickMount didn't work, but OTG Helper worked like a charm. And not just once. I was able to get it working consistently.
I wasn't able to have it mount without any of the above apps. Even with different file exploring apps.
So, at least for me, USB OTG Helper is the only thing that worked! The Pro version of the app is totally worth it too.

Great. I agree. The only problem I couldn't solve was trying to use a micro sd card. I bought a USB card reader, plugged it into the OTG cable. I couldn't get OTG Helper to even mount it; Stickmount did, but couldn't read the files. I tried NTFS, FAT, FAT32, even xFAT. Plugged the adapter into a USB port on my desktop and the files were available, no problem.
If you have one of these adapters, try to see if you can get it to work. Other people have, so I'm stumped.

I successfully could R/W to NTFS and ext2,3,4 formated 500GB self powered USB drive using an OTG cable and USB OTG Helper with stock rooted 4.2.2.
I think the limit is not OTG specific but file format, so you likely can use a self powered 3TB drive if you so wish.
So,
I recently purchased a 1TB WD My Passport, USB powered external hard drive. I was kind of hoping that I would be able to mount this just like my USB flash drive. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to. From what I hear, it isn't possible because not enough power gets to it from the Nexus. When I plug in the HHD, the light comes on and I can hear it spin on. USBHelper will recognize it and ask you to perform an action, but then it'll say nothing is mounted. Root Explorer will have an extra folder appear, but the contents will be completely empty.
I was wondering if anyone else has tested this on another ROM or configuration? Is it in fact true that not enough power gets to it? If that is true, would plugging the Nexus into a power source help with powering up the external hard drive? Or would the HHD require it's own direct power source?
I was thinking about getting a splitter of some kind to test this out.
Well I know its been talked about in the other threads of the possibilities. So now since we have the devices here, are proceeding with unlocking and rooting the devices. Has anyone had luck?
Sadly I do not have a OTG cable yet to test this but at least wanted to start somewhere.
Edit: Yes it is, see post below for link. Device needs to be rooted for it to work!
Says he was able, after root, to mount 2 drives simultaneously.

Brilliant! Thanks
Has anyone try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer
It doesn't require root so it should be good for stock users.
I can confirm a stock non rooted N7 I threw in a USB flash drive and read files and played a movie real quick earlier just to see if it all worked, didn't try much more then that but can try some more tomorrow. Still busy transferring and reinstalling apps from old N7.
I cannot get Nexus Media Importer to work on stock. It reports all memory sticks as protected.
I have a non rooted stock nexus 7 2013. The media importer doesn't work for me also.

Now rooted using Stickmount, still not working. The drive can be seen but it seems only small files can be viewed, and you can't copy them or do anything with them. Non of my, larger, movie files show up.
I was able to copy a 3GB movie file from a flashdrive to the onboard memory with no issues. Maybe try a powered USB hub? I didn't have to in this case but it might help.
I tried to read an external hard drive and had to use a powered USB hub to even have it mount. Alas, couldn't read anything. Don't know if it's because the hard drive was formatted NTFS or because it was 750GB.
USB OTG Helper works for me. It also supports NTFS drives.

Can anyone tell if it's possible to to use OTG while wireless charging the device?
Need this for my car dashboard tablet replacement.
I think the problem with that would be that it would drain after than it charges. Qi charging doesn't have great amperage.

works for me as well, I am wondering if there will be a root flash-able mod like the original N7 had to turn OTG on.
Why does Google not allow OTG to be active out of box? Is the lure of trying force people into using the cloud that strong? Clouds drain more battery compared to local content and wifi connections do not have 100% coverage like local does.
The reality is the reason this device is priced at near break-even pricing IS the cloud, so this is why there is no SD slot or full OTG, out of box. Most people do not mod, so most people will be part of their cloud control strategy. I would rather pay $50 more and let Google make a profit on the device, that way I could have a micro sd slot and OTG out of box. Curse Google and their quest for content control and data mining! :silly:
Earlier I said it wasn't working, without knowingly changing anything both Stickmount and Nexus Media Importer now work. I am rooted and perhaps Stickmount is making NMI work.

Stick Mount works 100% fine for me, just watched a movie from my thumb drive. I am stock+Root. Open file system and on SD card look at the USB Storage folder if you are unfamiliar with Stick Root.
Is otg ok with usb pen drive or 2.5 hard disk without power supply?

Yes and I also used it with a USB External HD and it worked fine there, too.
I had issues with OTG on my first N7 2013. It was a flaky connection and would go into a connect/disconnect loop and then just stop all together. I returned it and picked up a different. That one seems to work fine.
Stock, not rooted, and using Nexus Media Importer.
Some people may want to try rebooting their N7 as well.... If you look at the NMI app in the Play Store the developer knows there are a few issues with Android 4.3 when first using the app.

Thank you very much!! I love OTG features...
This new Nexus 7 has OTG support and also Slim port connection (for hdmi)...SUPER GOOGLE!!:good:
Phil Nickinson from AndroidCentral has posted that USB storage doesn't show up properly on the Nexus Player:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/+PhilNickinson/posts/MiyoNJmtGK8
Of course, it looks like he tried to directly plug in a USB key into the micro USB slot instead of using an OTG cable, if I'm not mistaken. If anyone who gets their shipment today could verify one way or the other that'd be very useful for those of us who can still cancel our pre-orders if USB storage is a no go.
Update: it is indeed supported but needs root for better visibility across apps.
The ADT-1 has a full USB port and a USB Key is unreadable in that as well. It doesn't mount.

Thanks for that. On the ADT-1 is their a way to make its USB port a master with a hub attached? Have you tried keys, hard drives, etc using a hub?

this guy is running emulators on an adt1 with all the roms on a flash drive he plugged in, so there must be a way to read it on the dev unit, if not the nexus

Interesting! I wonder what he's got it formatted as. . . time to start some testing (note: I tested this on the original OOB firmware, but haven't tested it since updating to 13D).
Update: Just used a jump drive and tried Fat32, ExFat, and ext4. . . no dice.
I've just opened a USB stick and installed an APK off it with my Nexus Player. I used OTG Disk Explorer Lite, which I had to sideload. I imagine StickMount will work great once we've got root, and any app could also do the same USB mounting probably.
USB drive was formatted FAT from Windows 7.
Good to hear the OTG cable works. Now I wonder if it'll take a keyboard or ethernet adapter.

I'll be damned. So, I never bothered to root my ADT-1 (silly me). So, I just spend 2 minutes doing that, pushed the USB OTG apk over, and voila. I now have external storage. Holy hell. Let's see if my 1TB HDD works. . .

Keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet all work. Some new gigabit Ethernet adapters won't work though; you have to get one that was supported as of Linux kernel 3.10.

Question for you. Have you tried navigating to the external storage using Root Explorer or anything similar? The only way I can seem to access the content on my drive is through the OTG app, which is kind of a bummer for what I have in mind.

So far I've only got it working through the OTG app. I think if I got StickMount working, that would enable it to work through other apps.
Interestingly, I installed XBMC (Kodi 14 Beta 1) and then used the OTG app to select an MKV file off the USB stick. It then opened it with XBMC and played. But when I tried to navigate storage with XBMC, it couldn't find the USB stick by itself.

Problem solved. So, the rooting and installing an OTG app was only half of it. You also need to disable SELinux. This app did the trick. After installing it, setting permissive, and rebooting, I'm in business.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.selinux
Note: This is on the ADT-1, but I would think the implementation should be nearly identical once the NP gets root.
hi can you please add instructions on how to sideload applications because I'm getting mine shipped next week and would like to sideload xbmc thanks in advance to however helps this site has helped me alot in the past. I don't plan on using my player for games just tv

According to Phil Nickinson over at Android Central, it looks like external storage is possible via a USB OTG cable. I'd post the link...but, the 10 post limit thing is holding a brutha back.

Thanks for the heads up... this is very good news. Here's the link:
The Nexus Player works with external storage and USB ethernet
I have an ADT 1 and my hard drives and all things work after mounting from USB OTG Helper. Needed to root first.

It's possible for Nexus Player too. Just wait until you get the root
